I love this place. Its the only music store in Santa Maria and its survived a long time. The staff is great and helpful. They have a great selection of pianos and guitars and a big selection of sheet music. Not much in line of studio equipment but what they dont have, theyll be happy to order for you. They never have a problem with my just coming in to play on the pianos. This is a local business that you should support.

I come here for my sons clarinet needs and my piano and songbook needs. The staff is always very helpful and there are many English and Spanish speaking customers that come here because the staff takes care of them. Everything I have bought from here has worked and been great and in good working order and sounds the way its supposed to.

Just came for the first time to get some new strings on my acoustic. They not only sold me the strings, they put them on for me and polished, cleaned and oiled up my guitar. Super nice people. It felt great to buy my guitar a tune up. $15 bucks well spent. Excited to play.

Their guitar guy made me feel like I dont know anything about guitars. Which is pretty much true. VERY HELPFUL

The staff is helpful. They will custom order music books. They even let me do a layaway on a guitar.

Brought in my old guitar and had it re - strung while I waited. The man working on my guitar was so nice, really a sweetheart. He even cleaned and polished my guitar.

Quality of instruments and accessories are horrible and overpriced; better to buy online rather than this mouse infested business. Staff will lie to customers just to gain a penny. Also better to get instruction for YouTube online than from these guys. Once a decent family business but now a business ran into the ground and in shambles.

The ABSOLUTE WORST retail experience I have EVER had. I wanted to get a set of bongos for my girlfriend for her birthday. Since I have no knowledge of these things I decided to try a local music shop - hoping to get good guidance so she would end up with something she would really like. The clerk sold me the crappiest pair of bongos you can imagine (but he had to order them so I didnt know this until her birthday when they arrived). Then, we decided to return the bongos in order to get a nicer pair that she would actually want to use. Its now 5.24.17. This order for the new bongos was placed in early February. The store claims they are on backorder and has refused to help or refund my money (insisting on store credit). Nobody will return my calls. Everyone claims there is nothing they can do. So I give up - they can keep the money they STOLE from me but I hope this review prevents others from dealing with the worst customer service in the history of the world. These people should honestly be ashamed of themselves. Dont let them get you too!

Moved here from Wisconsin last June was concerned to find a good music store Tom and Gene have been great.

The best place to find what you need

While attempting to look up Owens Music Co, I came across a sole review submitted 5 yrs ago. I have to say that I was in partial agreement with the review. Yes, I would say the instruments regarding guitars are not high end nor are the amps. This is definitely for someone who is looking for beginner level quality guitars and basses. Their forte is in the piano arena. The store as been around since I can remember and that is over 50 yrs now.Where I disagree with the prior reviewer is the comment; the staff are not musicians! I know Gene and Tom who have been with the business for many many years. Both have been playing / gigging and touring in their younger days as musicians and still play local gigs to this day. To say they are not friendly is beyond me as I see them interact quite often with customer, many of whom dont speak much English as this is a migrate field labor community where farming is huge. They spend a lot of time working to help the customer and do make a lot of sales. This is evident by the fact that the store has been around for over 4 decades that I know of. Ive been to Guitar Centers and have found pushy, rude staff their as they work on commission. Ive been to other local music stores that if you are there just to browse, they rather you leave. Not the case at Owens.Yes the store is old, can certainly use a face lift. The staff is limited now to mainly 3 individuals as the big box outlets like Guitar Center and the internet have knocked many mom/pop stores out of business. But Owens manages to this day to stay alive. That does not come from poor customer service in my opinion or they would be gone as well. Tom and Gene while not top notch luthiers do have the ability to make a decent amount of repair on guitars; replace pots, soldering, fret work, install new pickups, replace input jacks, etc.Lastly, I will rate it only a 3 due to the age, need of paint, new carpeting, and overall maintenance on the old building and the lack of better quality guitars/basses/amps. The staff keeps it from going lower because of their positive attitude.
