The quality of the work is good and the prices are low. I would recommend, though, that you request a call before they snap any rusty bolts that would result in 500% increase on the job cost.Most garages would call and say Theres a rusty bolt... if i snap it, that will cost $XX to fix, what do you want me to do. SmartService said up front there could be rusty bolts, that could make the price go up a very general warning. Then they snapped a bolt that required replacement of basically the entire front passenger suspension.
Over the past 20 years Ive owned 3 Subarus and have taken all of them to Smart Service in Shoreline. I trust them to provide thorough, careful service and repairs, to keep my cars reliable (I keep my cars for a long time) and to charge a fair price. As a single woman for most of these years who doesnt know a lot about cars, it was especially important to me to have mechanics I could trust, who explained things well and who didnt try to talk down to me or take advantage of my relative ignorance. Mike and everyone Ive interacted with at Smart Service are always professional, friendly, and communicative. They are also good about being clear about when I can wait to take care of an issue vs. something that is more urgent. In 20 years theyve never messed anything up or broken anything and I always feel I can count on my car to be reliable and running well after service or repair. They usually leave it sparkling clean too. I highly recommend that you take your Subaru to the professional, fair, and friendly folks at Smart Service (and I think theyre servicing Hondas and Toyotas now too)!

Great shop, high quality work for a fair price. Charlie has always gone above and beyond to help me choose the best options for my situation. They have kept my outback going strong for 313k miles and counting.
I was told by my dealer that my check engine light problem would cost $3K+ to fix, although I could get it done for less elsewhere. Glad I checked out Smart Service. First they did a full diagnostic and found another code the dealer had missed. Second, they laid out all the problems they found, including several the dealer had missed. Third, they triaged all the problems. Fourth, they gave me accurate estimates on costs associated with each repair. I was able to fix all my immediate problems for $1.1K and now have a plan to address future problems in stages. Their professionalism is outstanding. I would high recommend Smart Service.

My car broke down in Stanwood and had to be towed to Smart. They got to the car the next day and quickly assessed the problem and got it fixed. I had my car back that afternoon. I was more than happy with their quickness and thoroughness. I also appreciated their updates.
Took my Wrx in for a routine service. They notified me of a minor leak and recommended I take it into a dealer since they figured it would be covered by warranty. The dealer ended up needing to remove the engine to resolve the issue, so their recommendation saved me a bunch of money, particularly since I was near the end of my factory warranty. Feel good about taking my car there.

I really enjoyed having my car serviced at Smart Service. I was in for 90k mile maintenance. First, making an appointment over the phone was super easy and I got a loaner car reserved for the day while my car was in the shop. Dropping the car off in the morning was speedy and they had me in a loaner car and on my way to work in about 15 mins. They send a detailed service report and let you know of any additional maintenance they would recommend right away and let you know things that you can wait on. The price for the 90k service was great compared to a Subaru dealership. Lastly, they wipe down the car and do a quick vacuum. I left with a cleaner car then when I arrived! Hands down a quality experience with very friendly people to work with. I will be back in a few months for my next oil change. Thanks Smart for the great customer service!

I’ve been bringing my Subaru to Smart Service for nearly a decade and they have always done excellent work at a very fair price. Recently, when I had a faulty valve spring break, they went above and beyond to get my car running again. They worked quickly and got the car in perfect working order despite some serious setbacks with the vehicle. Though, I was already a devoted customer, this most recent repair only reinforced my positive relationship with Smart Service. I cant recommend these guys enough!

I have a 21 year old Subaru. Ive gone to Smart Subaru for many years. My car rarely needs repairs and never breaks down. Smart Subaru monitors problems as they develop but holds off on the repair until it is really necessary. I totally trust them. Good people!!

The service is outstanding! I had a problem with my transmission leaking through The connection lines . My soon to be son-in-law is a mechanicand he detected the problem, I took my car to a shop and they said there was nothing wrong with my transmission fluid, but they said I had other repairs needed so our family mechanic researched for a good place for me to take my Subaru and recommended smart service in Shoreline . Zach and Charlie at Smart Service were just so helpful and friendly and after they did a check up on my car told me that indeed my transmission lines were leaking I also decided to have a 90,000 mile service done on my car to while it was there . They gave me a loaner car which was very nice of them, they explained everything that they were doing with my car the cost and why they were doing it . When I picked my car up it had been washed vacuumed with a full tank of gas . I would definitely recommend smart service to anyone who has a Subaru the service was absolutely wonderful and I definitely we take my car back there again.

Wow, probably the best subaru shop I have been to. These guys know Subarus! We blew our head gasket, water pump, exhaust and about a million other things on a cross-country road trip from New York. They had us in and out in 4 days and the work is incredible. 10/10
Charlie, and Gallagher and the rest of the Smart Service team saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. I own a 2014 Subaru automatic Impreza and noticed a whining noise in the cabin whenever I hit ~55mph. Every time I took my vehicle to the dealership for maintenance (30k major, and 45k minor service) they didn’t note anything about the noise even when I had mentioned it to them prior to the service so I assumed it was nothing and decided against looking into it further.For my 60K major service, my friends recommended me to choose Smart Service. I decided to bring up the noise issue with them, thinking maybe they can figure it out and within hours they paused the 60k service to notify me about the noise. It turned out that the bearings inside my CVT were failing and that was the reason for the noise. Luckily my vehicle was barely under warranty and got the entire transmission replaced by the dealer. (Dealer quoted me $9,200 to replace if warranty was expired) After I got my vehicle back I then took it back to Smart Service to have them perform the 60k service. The 60k service went well and Gallagher sent me update texts throughout which were awesome. This level of attention and care is the reason why I will only bring my Subaru to Smart Service here on out.TL;DR: If you love and care for your Subaru as much as I do then this is the team to trust. They’re honest, knowledgeable, friendly people. Huge thank you again to Charlie, and Gallagher and the rest of the Smart Service team!
These guys are awesome. They take good care of your car in the shop, charge great prices for parts and answer questions about doing work yourself, and also suggested I get free work done by Subaru rather than do it themselves and charge me $1300 for it. Very classy! I will always do what I can to give them business considering how well they have treated me and how much $$$ theyve saved me.

I have used Smart Service several times, for everything from an engine rebuild to an oil change. They are always prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, trustworthy and thorough. When I thought my Forester was a goner, they brought it back to life and made it run better than it ever had before. For little stuff they always give you the pros and cons of doing the work now, as opposed to waiting, which I appreciate. And for oil changes theyre comparable to Jiffy Lube next door -- and a hell of a lot more knowledgeable.
This is the only mechanic I go to because of how honest and professional they are. I appreciate how they do business and the extra precautions they are taking during the pandemic.

Amazingly competent Subaru service shop. We blew a head gasket coming from New York and Dan ironed it out with added goodies in a matter of 4 days. The guys here know their stuff.
The mechanics and front office explained what was going on, exactly how much it would cost, and provided me with options based on my own financial status. They emailed me with an update to my car during the middle of the day, which was helpful as I couldnt answer my phone at work. The loaner car let me get to/from work. The pricing seems fair, though I didnt get second opinions as I had a sense of trust with the shop. Will continue to bring my car there and hope it has many happy miles!
I wont take my Subaru anywhere else! These guys have been amazing since day 1. They dont just take great care of my car, but they educate me on my vehicle, and on understanding the maintenance required to keep it running. Our little 96 Impreza is well over 250,000k miles, and it has run, and continues to run beautifully because of the care these guys have been into it over the several years.I highly suggest this team if youre looking for someone to work on your Subaru. Easy 5 stars to give.Customer Service - I had work completed on my car last week, getting the vehicle there was a bit tricky (it wasnt running). I spoke with 3 different employees at the shop organizing the drop off and later getting a quote: they were all excellent, friendly, helpful and capable.Quality/Trust - I asked Smart Service to check on a minor issue in addition to the major issue that I brought the car in for. They identified the cause of both issues and called me to describe the cause of the minor issue, and advised I wait to have it fixed as it was not serious or impact. They did not attempt to push a service that wasnt required and I feel they acted with integrity and in my best interest.
First time using Smart after suggestion from Carter for 30K tuneup. Everything was great, Zach was awesome. Loaner was ready, and not a problem when I was a few minutes late returning due to traffic. Will be back.
I took my 2008 Subaru Impreza to them for a new battery-They assumed I didnt know anything about my car, and in return lied to me. They told me it needed 4k worth of work done ASAP or it would be totaled. (??)This was false, and hilarious.Months later I had my car checked out by a more reliable business and theres still nothing in need of immediate repair, just a minor head gasket seep, which is a $$ fix, but not 4kI waited to post this review until I got it checked out by someone else, just in case of the off chance they were being honest.
As usual when I went in for my oil change with my new to me Subaru Outback I also got a question answered regarding a whistling sound my car was making. The knowledgeable person was easily able to answer and assure me the sound however annoying was nothing mechanically wrong and if I wanted to replace the exhaust to get rid of it I could. I opted to just ignore it and save the cash for now.These little questions I can get answers to from the experienced Subaru specialists there is just one of the many reasons they are the only ones I trust to take care of my Subarus. Even if I live further away I happily make the trip to get the work done by these guys.
Ive been going to Smart Service since 2001. My 1999 Subaru Legacy recently went over 250K miles and is running like the day I bought it. I credit this to the excellent staff at Smart Service! Not only are they very knowledgeable about the cars they maintain, but the service is outstanding! You can clearly see the difference between a family-owned business and a big car dealer or chain. They go not only the extra mile but the extra 100 miles to make their customers happy. I will continue to give them my business for as long as they will maintain the same level of professionalism and courtesy that Ive known since I started going there.
Weve used these guys for a handful of jobs on my wifes 2000 outback, and Ive always been pretty pleased. Ive always felt like they are very honest and competent, and Ive never felt pressured to get more service from them than I want/need, whereas other shops Ive used get annoyed when I want help diagnosing but then want to do the repairs myself. I would definitely recommend taking you car to Smart Service.

I recently had a major service on my 96 Subie, and without even asking I was told that a loaner car would be available for me. Even though my car is getting elderly, it runs smoothly and is trustworthy thanks to the guys at Smart.2 years Ago: Thanks - we know we can trust you not to talk us into unnecessary repairs, but also to let us know what is a need to do and a can wait a little longer. This is so important for us, because like everyone else on a budget, fixing our cars is never easy on us! We really appreciate the honesty and concern, and the little things when you do to go out of your way for us.

When our 97 Legacy started stalling on our daughter, and it wasnt the obvious problems, these guys spent days tracing down the problem, turning it into an obsessive personal quest to make it all right again. I have been taking my subaru forester here for years. I rarely write online reviews, but this place deserves it. Pricing is fair, but more importantly straight forward.Theyve stayed after hours (just a few minutes, but still not-expected) to accommodate my schedule. Some estimates have come in under budget, and some slightly over, but with clear explanation as to why.AJ and the staff are thoughtful, respectful, flexible, and most importantly honest. 4+ years and Ive yet to have an unpleasant experience. 5 stars.

It was really a hassle free experience. I brought my car in and they handled the rest. I was havening warranty work done to my car and they dealt with the warranty people and also told me some thing I could do to help speed up the process. Every time they had a new update they would call me and let me know whats going on with my car. Now my complaint. They obviously had loner cars they could give out but they did not give one to me even though I was getting a new motor from warranty and would be with out a car for awhile. I even asked and they said that they do offer loner cars but it depends on the service I was getting. Apparently getting a new motor for the car was not one of those services they offer loner cars to. So I went with out a car for about 2 weeks because my of car breaking down 2 days before Christmas and then New Years. I still would recommend them to other Subaru owners but just be warned about the loner car situation.

I own three Subarus, one of which is a rare early Legacy Turbo. Smart Service has consistently provided excellent customer service, great communication of a vehicles problems and the best solutions for those problems, and a superior spirit of dedication to the needs of its customers. Most unfriendly service advisor Ive ever met, just a rude curmudgeon of a man.. Ive worked in the car industry for years (Mercedes and Tesla) and THAT is not how you treat a customer.... I tried to make an appointment and he refused to even talk to me or hear my concern; looked like he didnt know how to multitask or prioritize. Unbelievable.response to the owners reply ----Mike, too bad you didnt get the correct information from your employee; I was actually looking to make an appointment for the following monday BUT your employee wouldnt even let me finish what I was saying before he rudely interrupted me and tried to pawn me off to another shop down the road (who frankly I wouldnt trust them to work on my lawn mower..)... The only reason I came in was to support the local businessin my neighborhood and someones whos work I actually trust. The exhaust leak that you refer to isnt rocket science. Im not asking you to replace a timing chain on a 4.2 V8 S4. I was simply asking to have you rack my car (same mounting points as a 2.5RS) and tighten two exhaust nuts (same nuts on ANY combustion motor regardless of make and model)... Your employee was too focused on wrapping up his end of day so he cant leave, instead of helping a potential customer to make an appointment for the following week. You say I became irritated and stormed out; thats simply not true. I was simply shocked that your employee wouldnt take 2 mins out of his day to listen to someones concerns.

This shop is at least 40% of the reason that the last 3 cars Ive bought have all been Subarus.Great service, friendly, flexible, knowledgeable, and only 2/3 dealer prices. Theyll recommend when you ought to get some work done as well as when you can put it off (and for how long), and how to get the most bang-for-buck out of the work they do (e.g. if you wait until your 60k service to do xyz, the labor will be cut in half because well already be doing abc, but keep an eye on it in the meantime. However, if you want us to take care of issue xyz right now, we will be happy to.)
Was told about this place from a friend and I will always take my WRX here from now on, I never normally let shops touch my car because Ive seen nothing but disrespect and abuse between stomping the gas or burning my clutch but Ive never seen more care and genuine respect for property then at this shop I never have any problem trusting them with my car and will continue to bring my car in and tell everyone I know about it.
