This store claims to provide a fashionably curated thrift experience- which it should, given how impossible it is to sell here. Not the case. The selection is very limited, and generally lackluster. Maybe if they actually bought peoples clothing their inventory wouldnt be so boring.
Theyre definitely collecting more clothes for the skinny people than average weight people, and their prices are much higher than I would expect. Theyre almost the price of new clothes, and yet I dont think theyre washed or cleaned at all.I wish they had more shorts and practical clothing not just blouses and dresses. I understand the space is limited, and thats another thing I dont like, its incredibly cramped even with like one person in the same area as you. I wish they would expand the store size, though I know thats tough. Its just impossible to stay 6 ft away from everyone, literally impossible.I think they need to update their stock more often 🤔 maybe marking things with colors per week or month, it might allow them to see which things arent selling. I hope they improve 🙏
Brookline location is far better; for buying and inventory. Somerville is like a driveway sale you pass by with old clothes hanging on a line. No imagination on trends and not sure what vintage actually is. The staff in training were awesome and will do well elsewhere. The so called manager became absolutely mute when the area director was on sight. She was rude, conceited and looked ridiculous in her costume,,,, I mean outfit. She is the reason for decline and eventual failure. Put a trainee in an awkward position in pointing out what a Halloween costume is rather than an idea of what an item could become with imagination. I wouldnt sell a thing, never mind purchase. Gross negative experience.
Super disappointed cause i LOVED this place 2 years ago. drove an hour to this location to lug in (about 50 items) 25 pounds of name brand items and all they bought off of me was a pair of shoes for 9 dollars (which is only $4.50 in cash). Was given no explanation as to why none of the other stuff was good enough. Waste of time and money:(
Total rip off. I feel bad for the buyers because while I tried to be polite and stifle my disappointment it was hard to do. I knew of course from prior experience not all of the clothes I brought for re-sale wouldnt be selected as winners, but I was planning on walking away with more than $18 for the four items selected for the store to keep. I decided Id rather keep my clothes (or even donate for free) then get stolen from. The total value of the brand new clothes I brought for them to look at and resell (which they expressed interest in) was a bit more than $200. To walk away with $18 is just nonsense. I will not be supporting this business further. A few days ago at the shop I saw a Forever 21 shirt being sold there for $18 which is probably more than it cost at the actual time at the actual Forever21. This business is corrupt and deplorable, especially in a time when people are looking for affordable, quality, thrifted items for both economic and environmental reasons. There is merely no incentive to sell to this business and no incentive for my feet to step through again.
Spent a while choosing items based on what they said they were accepting when I called and and the styles I see in store. Waste of my time. The people behind the desk couldn’t have cared less. While walking through the store I noticed the guy take out one piece of clothing and then start cashing people out. 4 minutes later he called me over and said they were passing on everything because “the bag was too small and they couldn’t see”… they didn’t even look at the clothes. Don’t sell here.
This the the evil cousin of goodwill. Unlike goodwill, it is:-smaller-less likely to have guys clothing-very crowded-more expensive-doesnt take clothing (Theoretically it does, but Ive never been able to get them to take anything, neither have any of my friends)-only does clothingI think it might have higher quality items. Someone likes this place, its always crowded!
All of the staff are amazing. You must make a appointment, which is very easy. The staff are very friendly and they are not picky or choosy of the stuff that I had brought in. They explained everything to me and are very understanding. I found a nice Timberland winter vest. They have everything from a 80’s concert shirt to pants sunglasses hats they have it all. FYI if you see something buy it do not hesitate because they sell there stuff quick
Like many others, I hauled a big bag of very gently worn clothing and shoes up to this store from across the city. I checked their website, & read what they were currently looking for, which included denim. I walked away with $4.25 from one t shirt that they wanted. No interest in Levis that had barely been worn, $160 Johnston & Murphys, or a sweet Calvin Klein spring weight jacket. They told me to make another selling appointment. Really? Why would I do that when the train ticket to get to the store costs more than you are willing to give me for my goods? I looked on the racks to see if there was a t shirt I could use the measly credit towards. I would describe their inventory as childrens clothing in adult sizes. Needless to say, I didnt find anything, and walked away laughing. What a waste of time...
I am so glad that this store is closed. Its possibly the worst store that exists on earth - so badly managed and incapable.
Never sell at this location again! It said on the website that they want sweaters for the fall, brought sweaters to the store and was told it’s still summer and they don’t want sweaters. Out of 30 items they only took and make made me waited for over 40 mins. Very disappointed
Awesome! they didn’t let me use the employee bathroom though
The website they have is really misleading about what kind of clothing pieces they take. It says loft, jcrew, American eagle, Nike etc but I brought all this stuff in and they didn’t take any of it. Had 3 great pairs of jeans and they didn’t take any. Also I go in for my 2pm appointment and it’s a mad house and every time someone came in, the girl checking out my clothes got sidetracked and had to deal with people that were coming in the store. After waiting 30 minutes and them taking about 6 of my pieces I got a measly $33 (could’ve been worse) after lugging about 40 items there. Just a lot of work for little reward. Probably will not be returning.
It’s a fine place if you are only looking to shop but there seems to be almost no rhyme or reason why they don’t take some items when consigning. I wonder if it has to do with personal taste with who is going through the items. Brought in around 40 items and only 3 were accepted. The woman in front of me somehow sold most of her pieces and made $120. I wish they at least had some guidelines posted so you know what it is they look for, or else it feels like a waste of time to then be disappointed. Or maybe tell you why they are saying no. Some clarity would be appreciated. I wish there were more/different consignment shops in the area so we don’t have to rely on this one.
I wish i had checked the recent reviews before hauling 50 items to sell here. Like others, I had name brand clothing, 11 of which even with the tags still on and they took zero items. None. Their reasoning was they want more spring pieces and they dont take a lot of dressy clothes because people arent going out right now due to covid (which is totally understandable although not many of my items were dressy). Its clear they are cracking way down on what they buy because during covid many people are looking to sell (out of work, need money) and Buffalo has probably reached near capacity with stuff people simply arent buying given the circumstances. Anyways, save yourself the trip and list on Poshmark etc. Would have given 3 stars as the staff were polite but must give 2 for Buffalos website not clearly listing their buying capacity and what they are looking for currently. Would have saved me a considerable hassle.
Very unprofessional staff. Canceled my appointments multiple times. Before the appointment they would URGE you multiple times to go there on time and not be late in multiple text messages. Obviously not a good place to go.
Meh. Not much selection, and limited on sizes.
Dont consign here
Great brands and lovely salesgirls!I force myself not to go back too often 😚
This is my first time trading clothes and the truth is I have had a very nice experience at Buffalo Exchange. You can get cash or clothes from the shop and they actually have a very nice and trendy clothes, lot of them still with the original tags. Very friendly staff as well. Very happy with the shop so far. Definitely I will come back :)
Staff is so friendly and welcoming but a lot of the product has stains or holes in them
I kind of figured out what they’re looking for each season. I always play a safe bet on great condition leggings with fun prints from name brands, and good condition shoes and free people dresses ;-). It’s always just a fun experience to see if they’ll take the clothes! You’ll be waiting some time because they have to carefully look at each items. If they don’t take them, make sure you take them to goodwill yourself and get a receipt so you can use that for your taxes!
I can always find the coolest things
Lots of beautiful used clothing. I rarely find something that fits me though. I’m tall and thin, and it seems like they don’t have much clothing for my body type.
I live nearby and regularly bring clothes here to try to sell them when I clean out my closet. Yesterday I watched a girl earn over $350 because they accepted every single one of her items, while they only accepted one of my shirts and I made a whopping $4.35 (and we brought the same amount of clothing). The girls who work behind the counter are very friendly and nice to talk to, but if you arent a huge hipster who they would shop from, they wont accept your clothing regardless of the condition. I always end up just donating my things to the Goodwill. Dont waste your time sitting in a huge line just to get rejected.
Decent secondhand store in Davis Square, though for the guys it mostly seems like castoff Urban Outfitters of yesteryear. That being said you can find some nice things if you are lucky and/or vigilant, and the staff is usually pretty friendly here. Its also a good stop for selling clothes before you toss everything to Goodwill next door.
Great idea, exchanging clothes for $$. But, the staff there picks and chooses. Four bags of gently used clothes - a mere 28 bucks. Not worth the hassle
PLEASE NOTE! ALL RETURNS ARE FOR STORE CREDIT ONLY. This was not communicated to me during checkout and was a distressing thing to learn after the fact. Stay informed.
Love Buffalo Exchange! Great way to prepare for any season with new clothes and shoes. Inventory turns over quickly, so there are always new items. The staff is super-friendly and full of tattoos, so the shopping experience feels young and fun. Rock on!
Theyre pretty pricey for thrift. Sometimes I find good deals, and other times I think theyre too high. Other buffalo exchange store have good sales on older items, but its rare theres much on sale here. They have good quality items for the most part. They dont do consign... they buy your items upfront which is handy.
You never know what youll find here. Also, you can bring your own shoes, clothes, and accessories you dont wear anymore to try to make a few extra bucks. Theyll check out your stuff, and if they think they can sell something, theyll make you an offer for it. Theyll pay you in cash 30% of what they would sell it for or give you 50% of their selling price in store credit. So if you have a shirt theyd sell for $20, you can sell it to them for $6 cash on the spot or get $10 in store credit. Note, youll need to bring your licence to sell stuff, or another valid, official ID such as a state ID or passport. For whatever they wont take and you dont want to keep, theres a goodwill to donate it next door.
Great place for 20-somethings and older. I buy clothes here. Fair prices. Inconsistent for me -- sometimes I find a ton of stuff and sometimes nothing. Their managers are awesome and will go out of their way to help. Good place to sell or trade quality clothing, but again not consistent. Overall I highly recommend coming here.
Beautiful clothing, very friendly attentive staff. Pocket friendly prices and very high quality clothing. Looking forward to another shopping spree.
Once you walk inside this place, you quickly forget that it is a thrift store, because of the steep prices. If you are looking for some great deals, this may not be the best place to go. The clothes are super cute, stylist and they have great name brands but the mark downs are not as drastic as you would expect from a thrift shop. One great thing about this place is that you get to sell or exchange your clothing and for brand name clothes you get a pretty penny back.
I love that convenience of Buffalo Exchange near my work in Davis Square. I frequent during my lunch break. They are always up to style with clean, re-wearable, and trendy consigned clothes. Most are name brands but some items may be vintage or chic that is outside the labels. I will typically cosign clothes each season and you get back a reasonable deal with store credit (50%) but lesser so back in cash (30%). Still its a way to get a few bucks before you pass them off to Goodwill.
Do not ... Do not sell here while Black.. They will not buy from you.. You could have the same items as a caucasian customer and they will not buy it.. proven when my roommate who is white went back 3 hours later and sold all my rejected itemswhile getting praised about what good condition everything thing was in .. Store doesnt even deserve a star.
Always find great stuff here. One of my fave thrift stores. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
Some great pieces here!
Not the best buffalo location I’ve been to. I was shocked when I went in to sell with huge bins of stuff and they only took maybe about 10 things and passed on a designer bag that retails for $120. At places like clothes mentor they will have you drop off your stuff and review the pieces you wanna sell for 30 minutes not 5. Not the best customer service everyone who works there seems young and just wants to be in and out and get everything over with, not very welcoming.
They have good clothes here but I bought about $80 of gift cards, gave a couple out, had an extra, tried to use the extra today and it had no balance. Pretty sure I gave Buffalo exchange $80 for useless pieces of paper that I’ve been distributing to coworkers who have had the same experience.
I have so many problems with the Buffalo Exchange stores that I could write an essay about it. For the sake of brevity Ill keep it to bullet points.-They only buy, and in turn sell, old and worn items for only a couple of dollars. Ive taken in very nice items with the tags still on them that were still in style only to have them say no. Meanwhile I watched them buy what looked like rags from a woman standing next to me. These stores are truly meant for hipsters who dont care what they look like.-The staff are rude and pretentious. Ive been in a few of the stores in different parts of the country and found the majority of the staff to be incredibly full of themselves. They have this vibe that says theyre simply too important to bothered to help you. I worked retail for years when I was college and for a while post graduation so I know its a crappy gig, but theres no reason to be a snotty brat.-This is my primary beef with this company. They wont buy nor will they sell plus size items. Thats not their official policy, but its certainly their practice. When Ive inquired in different stores about plus sizes I was met with responses that did everything, but come right out and say that Im too disgusting for them to clothe. Im used to the frustrating and time consuming process of shopping as a larger woman, but theres no excuse for treating someone poorly simply for having a different body from ones self. There you have it. The many reasons why Buffalo Exchange is not worth selling to or shopping at. I suggest hitting up any one of the many wonderful consignment shops around the Boston area. In fact, Found is directly across the street and the staff is wonderful and the last time I was in there they had a lot of really great things.
I HAVE A QUESTION- SO THEY WILL GIVE YOU CASH FOR YOUR CLOTHES? I HAVE SOME WITH PRICE TAGS STILL ON THEM
Great selection with recognizable and trendy brands, prices are competitive for the selection they’ve curated so don’t expect to pay the typical $7 a shirt. If you’re okay with that, you’ll leave satisfied and well dressed.
This is a great consignment shop. Nothing is too pricey and they have really nice stuff. Men’s selection is smaller at this location compared to their Allston branch.
With 3 consignment/resale clothing shops located in spitting distance from each other in Somervilles Davis Square (Found & The Goodwill Store being the other 2), Buffalo Exchange strikes the best balance of quality and value. Last December, I purchased a winter coat here for ~$40 or so, where a new one would have easily cost me 2 or 3 times that. A close-enough-to-new pair of jeans ran $16.50, and there are substantially more womens offerings. While the music may be a little loud for my taste, and the shopping floor can get a little crowded, the staff is courteous & enthusiastic. Bring your own bag and donate the bag fee to one of 3 rotating charities.
My go to. Always good selections, and decent prices. If youre not skeeved by used shoes, checked them out. I got a pair of basically new Dr Martens.
I like the store but the employees were excessively slow. I was waiting next in line for a buy for an HOUR because a worker decided to stop and chat with coworkers and the seller for two minutes after looking at each shirt. And the person infront of me only had two small bags. It was rediculous. Also there were at least ten employees working and only one buyer. Worst buffalo exchange experience ever. I have been to other Buffalo Exchange stores and never had such an experience. It took every nerve to not walk out and leave.
The worst store. I have been to others and had good experiences but this one seems to be terribly managed. Dont waste your time here. I didnt want to believe the bad reviews but I should have.
Buffalo Exchange is alright -- there are a lot of reasonably priced, and higher-than-Goodwill-quality clothes all stuffed into an attractive, clean, store.Buyer beware though -- I bought a pair of Armani shoes for $60 (a good deal, even by consignment shop standards, but a ripoff for a regular average-quality pair of shoes) only to realize when I got home that they were obvious fakes. I picked them up by the register right before checkout, and am still kicking myself that I didnt take the time to carefully inspect them, or even think that the *store* would put them on display like they did (with all the other name brand/quality merch) without a disclaimer.Theyre cute stilettos, but I still feel like a complete fool for falling for the oldest trick in the fashion book.
Cheap clothes and good quality - definitely mygo to.
Writing review as a seller:Downside:The seller deck should be in the back of the store and arranged like the baggage check at the airport where patrons can put items on a mid deck out of the way from general floor or employee walking routes.Upside:Play great music. The employees are generally very friendly and conversational. They also are knowledgeable about clothing in general and are able to work and talk which lightens the mood.Observation:The stores seems viable because of the location it operates (near school), the quality of clothes it resales, and its gender neutral offerings. It also has a decent web presence but might benefit from if it adopted the model of a store like Material World that sends bags to sellers to fill with items and then sends cash once the clothing are processed. B.E. could then deliver the excess clothing to Goodwill and save the patrons the effort of lugging extra items up the street (especially if it is rain/snow/sleet -ing)
A long wait to sell items, but a decent selection. Decent prices. Staff was very friendly.
You can snag cheap finds here but what they buy from you seemingly has no rhyme or reason. Had under armour brand new with the tags on it and that seemingly doesnt fit their style. 1995 all star game shirt for the Boston Red Soxs, was a pass. 120 dollar Celtics zip up apparently doesnt sell great just north or Boston. Gone in there also with clothing from other buffalo exchanges that I simply had grown tired of and had those rejected too. Either have some standards posted so I dont have to waste my time or have some consistency. Think Im all set dealing with this buffalo exchange. Would by far recommend the one in Allston over this one. At the very least the workers felt less pretentious in Allston. The Davis square location sadly feels like an episode of portlandia and for all their fashion the store is filthy
Have only been here to sell, I had a ton of gorgeous things to offer and they kept saying no to whatever I had. Was also the only person to not have a single item accepted, which was very upsetting, annoying, and frustrating.
Horrible experience, and I am not alone! Many of my friends and family feel the same, we brought in designer clothes still with tags and received $2-4 in return!!Sellers beware!!
Awful experience as a seller. I came in today with approx. 45 items and they took a total of 4. They passed, for example, on BCBG MaxAzria summer dresses (including one that’s still in stores right now!), Rebecca Minkoff heels, some on trend floral dresses from Revolve, Dylanlex-inspired tribal necklaces, everything in mint condition! Meanwhile, their racks are full of far more bland and dated clothes, many from mall brands I can get cheaper at Marshalls. At least taking my earnings in cash rather than store credit was an easy choice to make.
Fun place to buy clothes, mostly a bust if you try to sell
I love this place..I love the atmosphere..I love the girls working there..I love how it allows you to make cash out of goods that no other place would take...they buy Halloween costumes year long
Usually low quality selection. Buffalo exchange has gone downhill, or at least this location is pretty bad (for men at least). It looks like they might be just picking up items from Goodwill next door.
They offer some great, unexpected deals here but you have to search. I was surprised at how friendly the staff was. I got a rag and bone shirt for $20, you cant beat the deals.
Yeah jus feels racist in here.. like none of them ever talked to black ppl. The girl never ask for the other women ID because she was n the system. I gave her my number and she found me n the system and then asked for my iD.. same temp ID I used at other locations. They told me I couldn’t sell and that was that.. Allnjus felt lazy and hateful. Honestly the women didn’t even want to help me at first.. jus micro hate pour out there fake smiles and kindness.. black ppl take you items across the street to thrive
Bad place to go for selling or buying. I went here because I had a good experience with the flagship location out in Las Vegas. Wow what a mistake. The girls working in this store are rude, ignorant and act like they are better than their customers, when in fact they work counter at a second hand store. Give me a break people. It also appears to be able to sell anything, you need to know an employee. That seems legit huh? Shady to say the least. You are better off using craigslist/goodwill/salvation army. This location is terrible and I would advise to avoid like the plague. You have been warned.
Snooty is EXACTLY the word! Had many items to sell, maybe not vintage enough-some Lucky Brand, however, young inexperienced sales Girl looked at my 9.99 VINTAGE HAHA- WOODSTOCK shirt I was wearing (from H&M) and proceeded to tell me that that was the kind of items they were looking for!! What she passed up in my bags- Im 61, have I got VINTAGE!
Hipster shithole. Was told to bring specific things, when said things were bought, the only stuff they actually showed interest in were ironically awful old granny sweaters. Mostly nice staff, but they shouldnt be asking people to bring things in if theyre not actually interested in buying them.
They don’t tell you that items on sale aren’t eligible for return. When I made this point the girl was quite rude.
If there was an option to give no stars, that’s what this place should get. This place is grueling if you’re looking to sell gently worn items. Actually, grueling is an understatement. I brought in several barely worn items, all from brands that are found at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, etc., and none were accepted. However, they did accept a gnarly sweatshirt that had probably been washed 300 times, and that’s not an exaggeration.I was truly just looking to get rid of stuff that I’ve barely worn and wasn’t trying to bargain should it have been accepted. The moral of the story is that people are better off taking the time to go on Poshmark, or a similar site, and selling stuff that way. Or, you could buffalo-exchange your items, get a store credit for $40, and buy the above mentioned sweatshirt. With the cash-back option, you could probably buy a stick of discounted gum with what they give you.Second, and last, moral: Don’t waste your time.
Good quality clothes and options. Very nice and helpful store clerks.
The clothing is pretty good quality, perfect for the hipster crowd and very reasonably priced for their quality.
I can always find a nice piece of clothing to buy here at a great price.
The clothes here are awesome at a great price! But beware, they are very picky about customers walking around with coffee/tea/drinks/anything, and they will make you leave them at the front of the store while you shop.
The best brands at the best price. I usually go and there is always something to buy.
This place is trendy, yet some of the clothes and accesories sometimes stick out. For example Ive bought cool once pricey but here cheap beautiful shirts there but ive also bought high heels that look green and remind me of the shoe version of the grouch from sesame st.The prices are pretty great and I cant really help but to buy a few things almost everytime I ago. They have a upstairs for mostly informal wear with a semi/formal wear and shoe selection downstairs. The staff is usually great and mostly locals to somerville shop there.
Lessons learned and seller beware because your time is money. If you are selling items to Buffalo Exchange first ask yourself if that $30 sweater or $300 pocket book is really worth selling for 30% of what their value is. They say they will sell an item for $17.00 and therefore you will get $5.10 for it. They take your items one by one and evaluate them and say we will sell it for X amount of dollars, put a sticker on it and set aside. It makes me wonder if they will sell it the item for what they told you they will as they give you NO receipt of the value and the resale of the products they buy from you. I had three big bags of clothing as Im moving and cleared out my closet of items I hadnt worn in a long time as I wanted to down size my closet space. I was thinking with the beautiful items I had they would take them all but they do handpick the most expensive ones and say they are worth less than $15 or $20 then give you $1 to $5 for it. For an hour of my time to drive there, find a meter, and drag my stuff there, I would rather give to the Salvation Army (which I always have) and list the items and there values for a tax write off at the end of the year as Id probably make out better than the $20 I made for over a $150 worth of items they took. I almost grabbed my stuff back and ran out the door, but I realized that its my own fault for being so blind to a place that makes their money on buying and giving credits. After all it s a business and they have to make a profit, and boy they are making one. I feel if you are buying you may get a good deal but if your selling beware of your high expectations because in the end you will be disappointed. Its better to give to the Salvation Army, a church charity, or if you have the time, sell it on Ebay or Craigslist...
Expensive used clothing. Only comes in straight sizes. Dont get too excited about the whole consignment thing -- theyll turn away most of your stuff unless it fits a very specific look.
The young women at the counter were super rude and rolling their eyes at clothes that didn’t meet their “trendy” expectations, etc. highly unpleasant and do not recommend.
Unfriendly almost bitter staff weather ur buying or selling especially one specific girl which is hard to explain by saying she has a lot of tattoos but she usually is bright lipstick on and she always it seems to have a very big chip on her shoulder
Great clothing store
Sold some clothes here. Always hit or miss.
Went there 2times to sell things and they where rudeWill not be going back there
You have to check this place out it is off the hook
Too much fun!!
Overpriced
Great stuff
Quaint
Live it.
I didn’t have good experience last time but I came in today with some really decent inventory and they took 80% of it. I was shocked, and I used the store credit to get the sneakers I wanted and patagonia fleece. The guy was really quick and very helpful.
Its gone down hill. Used to be able to find decent clothes here for a good price. Youre honestly better off going to Marshalls or TJ Maxx now.
Very interesting things
