Used to be my favorite breakfast place but it has gone downhill. The sandwiches barely have anything on them anymore, you still can’t dine in or outside in the back and customer service is curt. My salmon bagel had very thin slices of salmon with 2 round pieces of cucumber. The hippie was basically just some lettuce. I don’t know if it’s new ownership or they’re just cutting back on costs but it isn’t what it used to be.Suggestions to management:- Bring back vertically sliced veggies- don’t skimp on the toppings / veggies- open the back area and inside for dining
Best overall breakfast weve experienced in a long time. The service was friendly and quick, the establishment was very clean, the food and coffee were excellent. We ordered a variety of food and coffee items over the few days we were in Portland. We had a bagel sandwich, a plain bagel with schmear, and the home fries. The all were excellent. We would return here again when in Portland.
*The*Best*Bagels*Youve*Ever*Tasted* Seriously, this is where bagels were born. Bagel Prime. Drove 45 minutes in the wrong direction today, just to grab some of these bagels. Kept it simple today, just bacon/egg/cheese on a Garlic and they still amaze me at the quality. Insanely good prices, great COVID safety (online/phone-only ordering and pick-up window only). I miss sitting inside their beautiful store or on the sun-dappled back deck, but we will get those back someday soon. Stop reading this review and start driving here RIGHT NOW. Youll thank me!
Best home fries ever!! Just like how my mom made them- melt in your mouth delicious. Even better loaded with all the fixins’. Great espresso drinks and the staff is so friendly!
Take out was awesome. We took avo toast with salmon and great coffees to bug light to enjoy the ocean view and beautiful morning. My favorite people and dogs made it exceptional !!
Terrible service. This place has amazing food but it’s pretty much impossible to get since Covid. Even now that Covid restrictions have relaxed this place is still a mess. I walked up to the window and got scolded for not placing my order online. I very Politely showed the woman behind the window when you click on online ordering on their website it says online ordering not available for this location. So she then told me that I have to call instead, I put the phone on speaker phone and called while I was at the window, to show her that it does not even ring and it just goes to an automated message saying caller not available and hangs up on you. Then another woman came to the window all in a tizzy saying that they are just absolutely slammed, and I said OK no problem I’ll take my business elsewhere and she said yes you would be better off….. it’s not the first time this is happened to me, so sadly to say I am all done until they can get it together……seriously
Just walked up to this place to get a coffee. At window they said I had to order on line then pickup. All I wanted was one black coffee and I was the only guest. Sigh!
Awesome breakfast/lunch...homies with queso bacon sour cream and scallions is the best. Always quick, fresh, delicious with the same staff year after year! If you havent been, your missing out!!!
Good, quick breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Well organized online and phone (no walk up) ordering for the pandemic.
Only allow phone orders but do not pick up the phone.
Worst Bagel I have ever had! They ration the cream cheese, doesnt even cover the whole bagel.Begal extremely chewy.
Vibe is effortlessly cool. Food is always bomb. Perfect setting. Great staff. Plus the tattoo flash sheets plastering the wall near their bagel case just seals the case that this is the best cafe in all of the greater Portland area.
The breakfast sandwiches here are good so they get an extra star, but their covid set up is a mess. Attempted to order online and received an error twice. Get a message on my phone immediately after notifying me I have a hold on my card because of suspected fraudulent activity from the two error orders and two additional fees assessed. Tried to call the place to sort it out and the phone line is giving a disconnected signal. Drive over to sort it out and they dont have the order because they turned off their online ordering for the day (without notification) and told us they wont take the order in person. We tell them the phone isnt working and they just tell us to try again. Wont be going back but if someone else were to go through the hassle of obtaining the food Id happily eat it
Awesome food. Super friendly staff and did I mention awesome food??
Best hidden gem in the Portland/SoPo area.
We started going to 158 when we first met. We order out when able. We love the staff. Everyone is friendly.
My favorite place in south Portland! Delicious, cozy inside. Service is great but know it’s walk up to the counter to order. Can get pretty busy. We called ahead last time and that was easy.
This place friggen rocks! Great atmosphere — warm and welcoming; attentive and kind serving; superb food and drink! I wish all restaurants I went to exuded this same energy. Big thank you to the business owners. I’ll be back!
After stopping at Scratch Bakery for some bagels, we headed over to 158 for a late breakfast/lunch on a Sunday. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. Youve got to try this place. Great coffee too!
Best place to hang out in So Po and commiserate with friendsVery friendly staffand good food -- where every meal is a happy meal !!!
Great food! Good coffee, only thing is you need to have time because service takes some. But really worth the wait.
Great food, great coffee. Had an everything bagel, toasted with butter and cream cheese. Wonderful staff as well!
Ordered an open face it was amazing yall are killing it keep it up
A very interesting twist on a bagel cafe. This is a very South Portland place ... very stylish and hip. It’s close to the college so there are plenty of young folks enjoying a bite and a coffee. Inside it’s small, nicely decorated with a few tables for enjoying your meal. In warmer weather, it’s great to enjoy your food relaxing in the backyard. These are not NY style bagels ! They are baked and crunchy vs. boiled then baked to get the shiny crunchy outside and soft chewy inside.158 Cafe has several varieties of bagels to choose from and later in the day popular choices sell out. They have soups, salads, sandwiches and many spreads here. Many traditional egg and bagel combos plus some interesting twists such as smoked salmon and capers. If you don’t mind a non authentic bagel, you can relax and have your latte or chai tea in a pleasant atmosphere.
Small, local bagelshop with really great breakfast options, local coffee and espresso. In the summer its a treat to bike down to the lighthouse and stop for a fresh bagel.
Good, but having gone there multiple times over the years. The fact they have done nothing to improve efficiency is a real turn off. The cashier shouldnt be a baristaThat being said the food is amazing .
I drive out of my way for the bagel sandwiches here. Another popular cafe in Portland is two houses down form my apartment but I would rather get in my car and drive across the bridge for these. Try a bagel with cream cheese and olives, it comes open face with plain CC and diced greek olives on it, magical!!
Great place all around! If youre looking to just stop in and get something to go or to sit and chat for a while. They also have great outdoor seating when its warm out.
Great food, friendly staff and fast service.
Best bagels in town! The super toast is always good and so is the home fry special. Not to mention the excellent coffee and the staff is always friendly and helpful!
Place is different of a regular cafe. But the hamburgers were delicious and also the lemonade.
This place, the hippie on an everything bagel, is just divine intervention. I have so many great memories of this place for the 5 years i lived in Maine. I wish I could go back every day. The vibe is just so cool I am very uncool, but dont feel out of place squaring up the joint. But seriously i cannot believe these bagels they make me cry when I eat them because they are so divine. It really transcends words.
Excellent breakfast sandwiches. Other stuff is good, too. Service has gotten slower since the menu expanded, but still very much worth it. Come early if the weather is bad because theres not a ton of seating indoors
Incredible! Low key vibe with the focus on serving you up something delicious and interesting. Bagels are phenomenal. Unique mix of college students, locals and people in the know from across the bridge. Outdoor seating in the summer.
Tasty breakfest for sure. One of the better places to eat at for a good morning wake up. Relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff!
Back in 2016, I gave the place 4 stars. Now I give it a two. Our breakfast bagel was not even come to what I had before. 2016: Great laid back place. Salmon bagel was excellent as was the BELT bagel. Will go back.
Amazing. Love the food, love the service, love the staff. I would go more often if I lived closer. I go to Rover instead. Fantastic!
I want to love 158(Pickett St Cafe), I really do. Its small and funky and the outside area is great in the summer. The tall guy at the front counter is one of the friendliest restaurant people Ive come across. They serve Scratch bagels which are flawless and the menu is fresh and local. Heres my problem: Every time Ive gone, regardless of how many people are waiting it takes at least 15 minutes for my bagel sandwich. This past Saturday I went in for 2 sammies. One with sausage, egg, cheese, one- bacon, egg...I waited for 25 minutes and took them to go while holding onto a toddler whos patience had since left the building. I get home and find that theres no sausage on my $7 meal and my husbands was blah as well. They get cool points and nice points in a town that is overrun with moody-hipster servers who are too cool to care about customers. Just dont be in a hurry and hope your order is right if you want to check this place out.
One of my favorite places, despite the short hours theyre open. Im very much NOT a morning person, especially after a long week, but I will set an alarm & drive down from Brunswick to have brunch at 158. If youve never been there you should know a couple of things ahead of time so you can just have a great experience.1) 158 is TINY. If you arrive during a busy time for them then the line may be out the front door and if youre in line inside, the door or people may bump into you. Seating is almost always an issue. I discovered 158 in 2004 and it has been that way since then. In warm months its easier with extra seating outside but inside seating may require patience to get.2) There is no dedicated parking and theyre right next to SMCC so parking is tight. You may need to park at the school and walk (its less then a 5 minute walk but Im mentioning it in case someone cant do the walk).3) Without a doubt, the bagels at 158 are some of the most AMAZING Ive ever had and bagels are typically the breakfast I have when Im on the go or traveling (which Ive done a lot). I know it sounds like Im exaggerating, but theyd rival some bagels Ive had in NYC! If Im just grabbing a quick bagel and coffee, I will grab a black coffee & plain bagel with plain cream cheese and be very content with my breakfast despite the blandness because Its so great. When you have more time, I highly recommend exploring the menu and spending the time to eat there. Hands down the atmosphere is great, the coffee is CBD & strong (but no iced coffee, unless something has changed) and the food is the best.If youve never been to 158, run there first chance you can; whatever the wait time or travel time is, it will be guaranteed to be worth it 😁
Love to stop here. Left car at Vinnies across the street to get oil change. Great bagels and super coffee!
Awesome coffee, bagels and more. Be ready to answer when they ask Are you stayin or goin?
Good coffee, tasty sandwiches, and a lovely area to sit out back on nice days. Its my preferred smcc study and lunch spot.
Totally biased to this place, but for a reason. Awesome breakfast spot. Totally reasonably priced and awesome food. I recommend the bagel with salmon.
They require you to call in your order for window pick up even for a coffee...The staff was very rude2 Bagels with cream cheese were almost $8.00What a joke...and a rip off.Do yourself a favor and skip this place.
Best bagels Ive ever had. Try it with their chili garlic cream cheese and spinach, its out of this world. Wish I still lived in the area!
Such a cool little place.Ive tried pretty much all of the bagels on the menu by now, and all are excellent. Add in the friendly staff, and the awesome back yard to sit out in and enjoy your tea/coffee and bagel.......just heaven. In fact, no - its horrible, dont come...........I want to keep it all to myself. Muahahahahaah.
Breakfast salad. Day old bagels (or fresh if youre into that kind of thing.)
The sour cream home fries are awesome. Also fun, hipster decor. Decent speed of service. Will be back again!
Quirky place. Food was excellent. Back yard sitting area is adorable. Good prices.
Amazing bagels, great outdoor seating when its warm outside.
Cured salmon on a seaweed bagel! No idea why I have lived so long without this amazing place!
Such a great breakfast place. Highly recommend it!
Service, food outstanding. The homefry concoctions worth a try for sure. Coffee also very good
Best bagels I’ve had in Maine thus far!
One of those places that just feels real... Great food, a lovely atmosphere and a good amount of outdoor seating with awesome shade trees. A local gem!
Great quality food and coffee/espresso. Easy with kiddos. We prefer to brekkie, walk to the beach, then lunch. Its the very best.
Warm and cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff. Delicious baked goods. Try the Super Toast special.
Fast and hearty breakfast sandwiches alongside a full menu. Beautiful backyard patio seating. Loved this place.
Friendly service and phenomenal breakfast fare. Great coffee. Best salmon bagel sandwich in Maine!
Have been going to 158 since it opened. Love their bagels, super toast always delicious, coffee superb, staff/chefs fabulous, friendly, creative. Favorite cafe, a joy just to walk in there!
Home made bagels with salmon and capers. world class
Quaint unique local spot with delicious food. I had a breakfast salad with a fried egg on top. Their sour dough toast with butter is worth the carbs!! Yum!!
Yummy food, good atmosphere.
I love the way the place is decorated, the food is delicious, and the staff is unbelievably friendly. Highly recommend the breakfast salad for a healthy protein dense breakfast!!
Extremely casual. They have a great, shady back yard with picnic table seating
THE BEST BAGELS EVER!!! They are gifts straight from the hangover gods. This place will always hold a special place in my heart. The pimento spread- agjgdhjgjhdsgjhcjhjchcdhjd it is my personal angel sent straight from heaven just for me
Great place but the line is long and slow.
Really cool place to meet and eat. Super casual and great food!
Im going to come back here one day for the grilled cheese and the tomato soup it was very unique very good.
Great food and service, only thing missing is WiFi
Good and healthy eats! Food is made from scratch at least of what we ate. Have vegetarian options
Unique choice of bagels, cool laid back atmosphere
Yummy local coffee and bagel sammies. Nice outdoor area in the backyard where my pup and I enjoyed our breakfast.
Very good bagels!! They also make great breakfast sandwiches!! The only downside for students at SMCC is that they dont have student discounts.
Great local Sopo spot; try the BLTE!
One of my fave local spots, the best bagels and spreads and coffee drinks
Solid breakfast spot! The home fries were amazing. And allows dogs in the back!
What a spot! Amazing food, comfortable atmosphere, great people. Everything I want for breakfast or lunch, or life for that matter. 158 rocks.
Great bagel place. Yummy grill cheese and tomato soup
Excellent homemade bagels and breakfast sandwiches, and The staff is very friendly. I strongly My recommend the everything bagel, its the best!!
Wonderful service and the food is great. This is definitely a good spot.
Nice staff, super fast and fantastic bagels. They have so many bagel topping choices, as well as some egg-y breakfasts.
Nice people, but the service is slow. I did not care for the bagels, better options in Portland. The coffee was fair.
A little pricy but the food is delicious and the staff is very pleasant!
Best bagels this side of Mr. Bagel. Love this spot
Great little place with a nice atmosphere and delicious food!
The queso home fries are soooo good! Add the grilled onions and its the best!
A great spot to grab a coffee and breakfast. If you hit it at the wrong time parking can be tricky and the line at the counter can stretch, but dont shy away - service is quick and the bagels are great.
Great food, fun atmosphere
One of my favorite places to go when I was a student at SMCC. Walking distance & excellent food. The salmon is my favorite!
Good spot for a variety of bagel toppings / bagel sandwiches and homefries.
Really great neighborhood breakfast/coffee/bagels. Service is always spot-on.
