Customer service was contacting me voluntarily with transit updates and provide me with a quote for financing and trade in. I loved the paperless and electronic submission of all offers and documents. Portland sale staff were highly professional and accommodating. I love my Audi Q3 SUV, I had very positive buying experience, free of any string attached or pressures, not a little thing for a female buyer.

Fantastic experience with Geoffrey getting my car initially appraised. I had done an initial appraisal online, so went to the store for a confirmation. It was quick, ended up the same as the online appraisal, he explained the full process, and he scheduled a followup for us to bring the car back in and sell. Left feeling very happy with the experience thus far.Horrible experience with trying to reschedule appointment. Called and successfully rescheduled to later the same date. A day later I received a text indicating my appointment was still at the original time. I indicated I needed to change the appointment and they indicated they would call me (never did). Called the store soon after and we had no appointment at all, and had to schedule for the next day instead. Just really poor communication.The selling experience was very good, quick and very easy. The quote was much better than any other company gave, but the communication and scheduling was very poor so it knocks a full star off the review.
Had a 2018 Subaru brought up from Mass. Once it was ready for me to take, I did a 24 hour test drive. Everyone was incredibly friendly even though they were incredibly busy. Once I returned from the test drive the salesman helped me figure out the best way of financing and left that same day with the car. Best Car Buying experience Ive ever had.

CarMax purchased a vehicle from me on 22 October 2021. I deposited that check that same day into my bank account. 5 days later there was a charge back on my bank account for the full amount of the check. Today is 28 October 2021 and I still have not been paid for my vehicle by CarMax. Jack Barnes and Paul Migliorini at the South Portland Maine CarMax store do not understand customer service.Update: 28 October 2021, Paul Migliorini said he would send my replacement payment check and it would be delivered tomorrow.Update: 30 October 2021, I still have not received my payment. I contacted CarMax and they said that my replacement check was not picked up by their postal carrier until 29 October 2021, so it wouldnt be delivered to me until 1 November 2021.Update: 1 November 2021, I received my replacement check and I deposited it into my bank account. Now I have to wait for approximately 5 more days to see if this one is a legitimate check to me from CarMax.I wish there was an option for a zero star rating.
The folks over there were phenomenal and did a great job holding my hand (metaphorically) through the process. The car I chose was advertised as having certain features that werent present so they are putting them in for me. Ive never bought a car from any sort of dealership setting before and was pleasantly surprised by the lack of sales pressure I experienced. Great job, would recommend.
I have tried repeatedly to contact someone (via text, phone, online chat) to arrange a transfer from CT. I have gotten little to none communication thus far and have been unable to get a hold of anyone to help me with this matter. It was a vehicle I was very interested in but hard to want to spend my hard-earned dollars made in the healthcare field on a big box business that can’t call me back.

I was able to finance a 2019 Hyundai Sonata with really bad credit, and $1,500 down,0 which I used my old van as a trade in and didnt have to pay anything out of pocket. CarMax advertises their car buying experience as low stress but my experience was horrendous. I was specifically looking for low stress having recently been widowed. I chose a car, did the paper work over the phone, paid the transfer fee and thought all was good. However, then there were nothing but problems after that. Zero communication from CarMax, lost title, not shipping necessary documents, being too busy to help me despite all of THEIR problems that delayed things. I did finally purchase the vehicle because I didnt have the time or energy to restart the process elsewhere but I will NEVER do business with them again. I warn you to steer clear.

I understand its an inflated used car market, but 19000 for rusted wheels and not even the original rims. but it was low mileage and black, and I needed a car asap. The no hassle is nice, but I truly felt I overpaid for that luxury
Was hopeful of a 30min appraisal as was told was standard, sometimes 45min. I came with required paperwork and of course empty clean vehicle. Took 2hrs (2pm-4pm) from check in to check out. Grateful for the sale just not the length of time, 2hrs.
I purchased a car from Carmax a year ago and was happy with the process. Just for my own information I saw a car recently on the Facebook page I was thinking of trading my car for. No one ever responded to the message I left concerning this. Today in my mail I received a letter from Ally Bank informing me my request for credit for a vehicle was denied. I never asked for a quote on the car and certainly didn’t expect a financing application to be put through since I never gave pertinent information nor did I say I wanted to buy said car, and no one took info on my current car. Thanks a lot for bringing my credit score down for no reason but Carmax’s fault. How can they do this without my giving the info needed from me???

I went to carmax.com to get an appraisal before going in and was very satisfied with it. When I arrived I did have to wait 15-20 minutes even though I had an appointment, but after that everything went smoothly. The staff was friendly and professional and I left with a nice check.

Easy transaction. Got a great car at a good price. Sales rep Evan Jahn was easy to work with. There was a bit of a glitch--the windshield had a little hole and a wide crack below the windshield wiper line which was not easy to spot and perhaps overlooked during the inspection process. Carmax sent a Safelite Glass crew to my wifes place of work to replace it at no cost to us. Very convenient. Incidentally, went on line to competitor Carvana twice over the past year or so. Wound up buying a pickup truck last September from a local used car dealer instead because Carvana listed a lot of vehicles that were reserved (not available) and really didnt have what we were looking for. It was as if large buyers were snapping up their vehicles in bunches, leaving little to nothing for small, individual buyers. It felt like when a big concert act comes to town and brokers buy up most of the good seats then turn around and sell them to concert goers at outrageous mark-ups. Definitely did NOT run into that kind of shenanigans with CarMax. What they listed was available. We will certainly consider CarMax again and will share our positive experience with those we know who are car shopping. Thanks to Evan and everyone involved in our experience at the CarMax in South Portland, Maine.

Not very happy, I was very busy that week and told them I wanted to get in and out quickly, and I didnt appreciate having to sit there for 2 hours filling out all the information I already gave over the phone!

The overall experience was not bad, however it looked like we got stuck with a Rookie Sales person and the transaction took nearly 5 hours! I also believe that once the transaction is completed the sales person should go over and explain the main features of the purchased vehicle rather than just handing us the keys with here is your keys - good luck! You just may want to adjust your sales person training to include knowledge of the process, expediency and check out courtesy. .
The salesman I dealt with was nice, answered questions timely, my quarrel is with the company itself. The “no hassle guarantee” is a crock. It’s nothing but a hassle when you live far away and have to go through automated phone services just to speak with someone different everytime. That was an enormous pain. I also left having buyers guilt as I feel I overpaid for my vehicle. I find CarMax’s prices to be a little high. I love my truck, but I’ll probably never buy through them again unless some major changes happen with how they structure their company.

Clean store and on time with my appraisal appointment. It took longer to get my appraisal back then they said after looking at my car so I asked them to email it to me which they did. Very low pressure dealership on that side at least.
My son bought a vehicle around February that needed repairs shortly after the purchase. That made me question their inspection claims. He recently turned on the a/c for the first time and found that it was not cooling. He was hoping the problem was with the coolant, but it is actually the compressor which is an $800 part for his Nissan. With 4 to 5 hours of labor required, thats not a pleasant surprise for a vehicle purchased 3 months prior. When CarMax was contacted, they said it worked in February. I fully understand things not being covered outside of the Warantee time frame, but this is not the first major problem and Im curious as to how the a/c wastested in February. I will never do business with CarMax and I certainly will be spreading the word.
Second car this fam has purchased with CarMax. So easy, so accommodating - sales people not working on commission so you just feel less pressure and are able to get the vehicle YOU want. Will probably not buy a car anywhere else!
I brought in our 2001 Honda CRV with an online offer of $1900. After inspection, we received $1000 due to rust underneath. I dont feel this offer was fair at all - the rest of the car was immaculate & had I known we would only receive $1000, I would have taken it elsewhere. I am not very happy with Carmax - I feel they paid me very little, and they will turn it around & make a big profit.
The 2017 Chevy Camaro I purchased was in to see a mechanic after i had it for one week! It had a bad rattle in the hind end! Come to find out the shock mounts were almost falling off and the shocks were rattling around almost loose! So much for your inspection! I do not know how anyone could of missed that loud of a rattle! Im glad i got home safe, it was an hour and a half drive home from Carmax to Portland.I called my salesman 3 times and left messages and he never called me back! Not very good customer service !!

Just an excellent experience. Initial contact Jack was personable, courteous and professional. He analyzed our car and provided a very fair price. Meanwhile, I checked out the cars on their lot that they were selling. Very impressed at the condition of the cars even when they were older models, but we were looking for a new car. Jen helped with the actual transfer two days later. Again, she was very friendly and exceedingly professional. She answered all our questions. I would recommend this process to anyone in lieu to trading ones car. Probably purchased twenty cars in my life and this was so much better that haggling over a trade-in.

By far the worst experience Ive ever had a dealership. Clearly the turn and burn approach is how theyre doing things in the Portland store. I tried to do most everything online and already knew exactly what we wanted. We were already approved and had enough cash to buy as well. Not only did the salesperson just flat not care, he tried everything he could to talk us OUT of the car we wanted. I honestly was flabbergasted the entire visit. In the end, we were missing a copy of a SS card and had to come back with it. Thank God for that. We were able to snap out of the trance and realize not only was the dealership a joke, but so was the financing rate and the price of the car. We ended up driving home our new car last night from a smaller dealer here. Better car. Better price. Better rate. Way better experience. My favorite part is we never ONCE heard back from our sales guy, Evan. Is there no follow up at Carmax or does it go back to turn and burn???? Buy. Elsewhere.

Express interest in a car and was told it could be transferred when they called me back. Then they tell me it’s on ‘demo’ no one can tell me what that means but tell me they will get to the bottom of it. Literally no one calls and finally when I talk to someone who knows what it means they tell me that a manager is literally joy riding the car I want to spend 25k on around town and may or may not be willing to give it up. I then decide after 3 days to have my second choice transferred up because I finally find out that some clown is driving the car I want to buy around town. Just to find out it is no longer available.
