Service was poor when buying some plastic tubing. The cashier told me he couldnt process my purchase by measuring, or even help measure, the length being purchased. There were no measuring tools or guides to use, and he suggested I use the 12 floor tiles for that purpose. However, the tubing coil took two people to stretch out to measure. Although there was nobody else waiting to check out, the cashier wouldnt help. So another customer who was leaving the store offered to help me instead. I would have left without purchasing the tubing otherwise.
They have just about anything you would need for any small to large home improvement project. Service is excellent. Knowledgeable staff is quick and easy to find. Great customer to service staff ratio. They have all the little things to help with making small repairs in older homes.
If I could give negative stars I would. Just went to this establishment and the cashier literally swore twice, was very rude, and disrespectful. Wow. I couldnt even believe what I was hearing! I understand businesses are hard up for employees but this was the most terrible unprofessional behavior Ive ever witnessed!
I love this place. The folks are very friendly. They do their best to keep everything you could possibly need. Great neighbor to the community.
I went with a broken key, he was able to remake it!! I also have my screen door kitty proofed so looking forward to trying it out soon!
Awesome help at the Sun Prairie store. Derrick is fantastic. Helped me with 4 different projects throughout the day! The whole team at this store is very talented and goes the extra mile to help!
What a great selection of everything!
Unfortunately it is hard to support local when the line is too long and you cant wait 30 minutes to buy. Terrible service on a Sunday when the store is busy. Amazon will get my business from now on.
Chris (very young man) was so helpful! He answered all my questions and was patient and professional. I came in asking about how to patch a sidewalk hole and he helped me get exactly what I needed! Thank you for making that easy!
Very helpful staff. Easy to find what you need.
On October 12th, I had a great experience at the Dorn Hardware in Sun Prairie. Thank you to Larry for being such a great help. Thank you, thank you, thank you from Forrest.
I try to visit this place over the other big box stores in the area as they always seem to have what i need.
Very helpful staff.
Love my neighborhood hardware store! Always available are the products we need, but the knowledge to gain through the employees is invaluable, priceless. They are kind and always volunteering that wealth of information. I like to do any repairs or improvements myself, but since my Dad’s death I’ve been at a loss when it comes to personal advice. I’ve found an entire building FULL of Dads and Brothers happy and willing to lend advice and show me which products I need to follow through. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Rented metal detector. Good value price. Con dead or weak batties.
They are my go to hardware store well stock knowledgeable help....a winning combination.
Always been a great place for me to go for the classic hardware store help you cant seem to find anywhere else. Special projects - unique items or just typical hardware items. Rent or buy, it is a nice place to have nearby. I had keys made here this time - every one worked just fine. Had to return the k eys made at two other bigger stores in the past, but never from this place!
They have the best selection of stainless steel hardware of any hardware store I have visited to date! Awesome for the hobbyist. To the owner, any chance youd want to open a store on the east side of Madison 🤔?
Great place with a variety of items. Definitely my favorite local hardware store.
Scott came up to us when we had the deer in the headlight look. Saw a picture what we were looking for on a hose/outdoor mister system. Found it and now we are enjoying sitting outside staying cool in 90 degree plus humid weather. Highly recommend!!!
Stopped by to rent some scaffolding. Everything was ready to go when I arrived that had been reserved. Customer service was friendly and efficient. The store is very clean and well-stocked. They have quite an inventory of rental equipment. Will definitely use this place again.
Very helpful nice people.
What a great store with an excellent selection of products for the do it yourself homeowner thru contractors. Prices are comparable to other stores in the area. I was impressed with their rental fleet. Check them out.
Such wonderful customer service I received today, from the associate who helped me find magnetic tape to JR, the guy who saw me struggling with 2 bags of ice melt and brought them out and loaded them into my car. I really appreciate such good service and I will be sure to share my experience with others looking for a great place to shop. Dorn Hardware in Sun Prairie, Thank you!!
Great service here! Dave Wagner saved me a lot of time, energy, and money. He helped me find the right tool for the job and replacement part. I plan to come back here first whenever I have a hardware need!
The guys are very helpful in the rental section. They helped me pick the right auger this Spring for digging holes to plant trees. And this summer they helped me with a pressure washer and extension wand. When a problem arose, Larry actually came out to my house to swap units. He went above and beyond expectations to help!
Always excellent service, never been sold on something I didnt need. There are usually a couple knowledgeable people on staff at the Sun Prairie location. Say what you will about the prices, but if I have a leaky washer/o-ring I gotta buy 20 at home depot for $20, i get the one i need at Ace for $1.22
Ive been going to Dorns since 2005. Theyve always got what I need and friendly and knowledgeable staff to answer all your questions.
Good selection, prices are ok but for the convenience Ill pay them a bit more. They are always nice, friendly and courteous. There have been a few times where I needed help, they go the extra mile to make sure you get everything you need before you leave. They are also good about returns if you buy the wrong item.
Went in to check out grills and got just what I wanted. Beautiful Weber with all the features I need pointed out for me.
They had awesome service in the rental department and was very he helpful.
Very helpful. I came in knew what I was looking for they had it told where to go and I was able to rent it in 10 minutes a bolt cutter. To cut my bike lock off. Well I was wrong brought it back and the service representative showed me what would work. Hacksaw. So that I was wrong about the bolt cutter was my mistake I explain what kind of bike lock I had the first time so he couldnt tell me I was wrong. But the hacksaw worked and I was riding my bike the same day!
Place is good. I plan on retiring here.
On hold for 6 min before deciding to hang up. Im surprised these folks stay in business. Much better options available to the general public.
Awesome staff, reasonable prices.
First, the only reason I am giving 1 star is because there is no option for 0. This place has been nothing but problems, and today was the final straw. We needed to rent something and were quoted $33 for 4 hours. However, upon getting home we realized that we were charged an additional $3.30 “damage waiver charge”. Not once during our transaction, with 3 separate people, were we notified of the fee. Then, when we returned the piece of equipment and politely asked for a refund because no one notified us of the charge, and the option to waive it, we were treated fairly rudely. When asked why no one had notified us of the charge, the cashier pointed at a sign on the counter and that was that. In our opinion, any place that does not at least notify customers of a charge is basically stealing. We HIGHLY recommend avoiding this place at all costs. While it may be a few minutes farther, Ace in DeForest has always been great and incredibly friendly.Update: We have changed our review from a 1 star to a 4 star. This is because the owner of the True Value, Tom Dorn, responded to our review and did issue a refund of the damage waiver. We were very impressed with not only a response from him, but with his willingness to issue a refund. This told us that he takes reviews seriously, and that he cares about resolving issues with his customers. We have a great respect for someone who cares about each customers experience in his store. That doesnt seem to happen much anymore. Thank you, Mr. Dorn. Hopefully the employees, though, do begin to ask each customer at the time of rental if they would like to buy the damage protection or if they want to waive that protection. Then, both parties are clear from the beginning of the charges and the coverage. Thank you again, and your response and refund is greatly appreciated.
I like to go Dorn True Value because I can always ask for help and I know I will always find someone willing AND happy to help. And I always find what I need. But it is the williness to help that makes me go back over and over.
Great staff to assist and go the extra mile to make sure you get what is needed.
The people working here absolutely know what theyre talking about. The machine rental is an incredible service and the price for them is great.
Very run-down inside, not pleasant or friendly to visit. The cashier was texting on his personal phone and didnt put it down as we walked up....we had to wait while our purchases were sitting on the counter until he was ready to ring us up. We will never visit this particular store again.
Nice hardware store. They have folks there that can help you find the right screws, bolts, etc. They have rentals, caulk, lawn care products, all you could ask for.
They have items I cant find in the big box stores, and the employees actually know what they are talking about on their products. Prices are high in some things but the products are good and last.Employees try to be helpful and you have local help.
Great store always has what I need.
We rented a brush mower today and were happy with our whole experience. I would recommend using their rental service.
They pretty always have what I need. Relative to Walmart, theyre actually fairly inexpensive. Relative to other shops around the greater Madison area, theyre on par. Relative to like a Fleet Farm, theyre kind of expensive.
They are always so helpful. I brought a chair in that needed a nut to repair it. Bought the nut. Then they lended tools and a very helpful worker to get my chair repaired.....for free.
Prices are a little high but its convenient and I like the people that work there. Plus they seem to have pretty much at least one of everything.
Great small business that Id like to see in the neighborhood forever. But I went there today & they charged me $13 + for a 48 L x 12 W x 3/4 thk board that they offered to cut down to 34 (at no charge). Thats too much. Shame on me & in the future Ill be sure to get a quote on unmarked items
Consistently horrible customer service. I have had zero greetings or help finding what I needed. I have completed several transactions without ever being addressed or looked in the eye. At least at bigbox stores I can ring myself out rather than wait for someone to get to the cashwrap who then has to call for backup to figure out how to operate the point of sale system.
I often stop here for small odds and ends and every time, I have plenty of employees offering to help me. They go out of their way to make sure I get exactly what I need!
Hometown feel from the time you walk in until check out!
I like this hardware store because they are friendly, helpful people, great selection and clean store
Friendly and go out of their way to assist and make sure you are satisfied with your purchase!
Classic hardware store. Great fastener selection. Helpful employees.
This is a wonderful store with a huge selection, friendly staff and competitive pricing
Great selection! Prices are a little higher than big box. But, it is worth the convenience.
A typical hardware store with a decent selection of parts and tools for many different home needs. It also has plenty of rental machinery for those items you only need once or twice. The staff is very helpful if you need assistance with some DIY items. In particular the plumping and electric area has some knowledgeable employees. You can definitely get more guidance from here than going to home depot or Menards. As with any small hardware store the selection is (overall) limited and prices are not quite as cheap as the big box stores. Then there is the website, it does not show items/stock at the given location. Sometimes you need a particular item that shows on the site but it doesnt tell you its available in that store. This not exactly a location issue, but it does make looking for an item a phone call or a blind visit.. I frequently choose a big box store where I know its available despite the increased distance. All that being said, its a great place to quick stop in and pickup your DIY needs quickly.
Not going to waste any more words than I have to, the rental service sucked and nobody seemed to be well trained and knowledgeable.
Cant beat a hardware store when trying to find those odd parts. Forget the big box shop local businesses.
Great place to find nearly anything for your home and landscape.
This place is always clean and neat and there is always and I mean all someone there to help you if you need it highly recommended store
Always satisfied when I leave there. Easy in and out. :)
Great selection and they have many things a big box store wont such as a consistent year round selection of grill parts and many specialty items and services. Sharpening of even planer blades, glass replacement, all kinds of stuff. I go there when i have little time, only a few things to get and i need to talk to an expert. If i have a lot of stuff to get i cant afford the higher prices. Theres also a sharp difference in knowledge. The counter workers and people who answer the phone usually dont have any hardware knowledge nor any idea where anything in the store is. You always get transferred to some guy in the back whos an expert, even for really BASIC questions. Same happens in the store . i just think they would educate all their employees on basic hardware knowledge.
Thank you for allowing your customers freedom not to wear a face mask if they can’t for medical reasons :) 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Freedom 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Thank you !
They spent a lot of time with me to locate a twenty cent screw and educated me on how to keep the parts from oxidizing in the future. That is why I purchased my lawn mower from there--so that I would not have to travel a great distance to get a twenty cent screw and priceless advice.
Always helps in a pinch; like to explore the bargain bins.
Very good customer service, you walk into the store, they give you the small town feeling, with one on one personal attention.
Good for a quick stop, helpful staff, and some decent sales.
Large selection of products, and 5 star paint supplies. The downsides are prices are higher, and for some reason every time Im there another customer asks me if I work there....
I went in to get a can of wasp spray and my visit was neat, quick and easy.
Needs a facelift badly...some staff excellent others not so much
Great local hardware store. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Very helpful staff, unfortunately they didnt have what I needed
One of the last few places to go and get good help and advice when working on, or repairing something
Excellent service.
Family owned business still alive today they must be doing it right unless the store is some rich guys hobby lol
Great selection, good service and fair prices
Good selection. Clean store, spacious isles. Staff is friendly.
Well laid out store, helpfull and knowledgeable staff, shelves well stocked.
As with all Down True value service was good and good selection of everything I needed.
What I call a real hardware store. You can get things like axe handles (and you get choices between handle types and even what sorts of wedges), bolts and nuts made of any material and darn near any thread/pitch, electro-magnet coil wire - you know - hardware. Nothing against nearby big-box home improvement stores but they are NOT hardware stores. You need brass rod, a knife switch, nylon bolts and a replacement handle for your old hammer? Come here.
I tried twice to find out if a certain product was carried by this store. Both times I was put on hold and after over 5 minutes each time, with no one getting back to me (and horrible music) I finally gave up. Needless to say I will not bother to purchase anything at this hardware store.
Great. Seem to always gave what I need
Can always get help when I cant find what Im looking for. Very good at taking products back that dont work.
Ok selection but comparatively exoensive.
Friendly knowledgable staff good selection on goods
They are always so helpful here! Somethings might be slightly pricier, but its local.
Very helpful and friendly staff.
Employees are always helpful in locating items were searching for
This store is very friendly, You get what you put into it, I have seen many upset people treat some of the employees not very nice when they are trying to help them.. I see people complain about price in these reviews and I think you get what you pay for and they also dont buy in the large volume like your big box stores do,so they cant compete on the few dollars difference.Dorn hardware has a better selection of glues, caulk, tape and dont forget the nuts and bolts. You cant get half of those items at Home depot or Menards been there looking myself. Knowledge is something you learn as you grow in the business, You ask a not so basic question to a younger staff person give them a break they might not know what you mean but they will find someone that does in that store to help you. Try finding someone at Menards that really know there departments and they cant tell you. Dorn hardware staff needs to know the whole store. Yes the whole store. Try getting that at your other stores. The comment on the rental about not renting to someone. There is more to the story on this I would guess. Dorns will rent to anyone that has a Valid Wisconsin DL and a Credit card, You dont have that they wont rent to you it is for there protection. When you are in the store sure there is a chance some one might not walk right up to you and ask you if you have a question on weekends It is pretty busy when I have been in there and they dont have 30 employees in the store like Menards. My belief is buy local and from your small business owners you are better off.
Very helpful and friendly and they help you find what you need
Pleasant place to shop and very helpful staff.
Great local place and the people know much more than the big box stores.
I shop there often. Fast in and out.Helpful people.
Super helpful and courteous employee s
Incredibly slow lousy customer service
Very helpful and friendly.
Great family business with fair prices
Fantastic neighborhood hardware store with helpful staff
The paint manager at this store was clearly intoxicated and rude to one of its customers when the customer asked if they could mix two different types of paint, well knowing the outcome of the mixture. Dont bother going to this store the overall feeling of this store practically screams unprofessional.
