In the two weeks I spent in Tallahassee, I visited this shop 3 times. After rolling in from Fort Myers my bike needed some work. I replaced both rims which were bent and needed truing far too frequently with some sturdier double wall rims. Turns out the rear hub or quick release lever was also damaged. I got my rear derailer adjusted and cable replaced. The bearings in my bottom bracket were giving out after a year of riding almost every day and that was replaced for me as well. And I also exchanged the front disk brake rotor for one that my pads grip on better. Not only this, but the crew there spent a significant amount of time going through inventory trying to find me a replacement fork for my 29er with a 1 stem which by no fault of their own were unable to find because it is an obscure product. The people were kind and personable. I was given hot coffee on each of my visits. I got to learn some things I didnt know about derailers and bottom brackets by observing and helping with the work. Now, Im back on the road headed toward Pensacola! The cost of this for a guy on a homeless bike tour? Zero dollars and zero cents! AMAZING!
I LOVE Bicycle House. I first came here when my bike was needing some cables rerouted and I was greeted by Luis Ortiz, a long-time volunteer. The place was bustling with volunteers fixing bikes, sweeping the floors, and organizing the space for a move.He and I fixed my bike together and got to know each other over the course of an hour. At this point I was pretty amped about this whole thing. He suggested I come back to volunteer and later that week I did.And I kept coming back, because not only was I learning how to work on my bike myself, but Bike house offered meaningful way I could contribute to our community.Ive made lifelong friends at bike house over the last 6 months and learned so much about the community and the people that make bike house what it is.Im excited for what the future holds as Bike House is now OPEN in the new location (still in the same commercial park, just behind the old building) and the space is continually improving with the focus of providing transportation as the #1 priority.A team of volunteers, led by Scot Benton, the founder of Bike House, have worked for months to open up the new location. We built a fence using rebar and 26wheels, scaffolding filled with frames and wheels, covered by a 50x70 tarp roof, an absolutely massive sheet metal door, moved and organized hundreds of bikes, wheels, parts and tools all in the name of creating a space that will best serve the communitys need for transportation by Bicycle.Below I attached pictures of the new shop so you can get a sense of how its set up today. I personally have been riding my bike as my sole means of transportation for the past year and IMO its way more fun and efficient and cost effective than a car, so if you are in Tallahassee and need a bicycle, check out the bike house website, call in, or come in to see how Bike House can help!
Great people, welcoming environment, and very useful space. Every volunteer and staff member I met here was above and beyond amazing! Luis, Alex, Al, Josh, and of course Scott are all incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and fun. The guys were able to help me get my bike back in working order, give me some tips, and talk for a bit. Its the kind of place that you want to go back to and be a part of. I cannot give these guys and what they do enough praise!
Donated two children’s bikes today and was so impressed with the volunteers! So glad they’ll put the bikes my kids have outgrown to use in our community! Amazing resource for the Tallahassee area! 💕
I love this place! When I commuted by bicycle and couldnt afford to go to a regular bicycle shop, this place was a life saver. The people are so friendly, diverse, knowledgable and passionate. Highly recommend.
Amazing people! My 14 yr old was excited with the help and service they provided along with the bike they helped him select. I wouldnt want to buy another bike without their help.
The folks who run Bike House are just super.
They haven’t call me yet for appointment to build a bike
Great people doing great things for a great price.
Had a great experience when I took my two boys, ages 14 and 9, and the older boys best friend. We arrived about 15 minutes before they closed and Louis took the time to talk with us about different bikes going so far as to allow the boys to ride several bikes to find the best fit.
Bicycle support and wonderful 501c3. Helping the Tallahassee community ride and supporting cycling.
Awesome service. Thanks.
The Bicycle House is an oasis of what used to be common decency. I arrived late in the day, having ridden from Suwannee State Park to find the door locked. As I was contemplating plan B, Luis opened the door, welcomed me to stay the night, gave me a tour and keys, showed me my bed and the shower, and gave me directions to the local grocery. Scott dropped by with his dogs later and we talked bikes and found common ground- he had lived in Massachusetts where I do now. Luis suggested that I head South to Rt 98, which I did the next day. Wonderful place. Wonderful people. Wonderful cause.I will donate now. Thanks Luis and Scott for the welcome, and for making my trip a success. I will see you when the viral outbreak ends and I am able to continue riding the Southern Tier.
Looking for a neighbor to see if they pick up bicycles to repair and donate to the community as her mother just passed away and my neighbor Must Move asap.Thank you Scot for reaching out I did send the email and I apologize I put Scott instead of Scot...Ive reached out to our neighbor and she is very much appreciative.Thank you very much.
I am so glad I get to know y’all! Y’all are the top #1 bike shop I ever been to in my lifetime. Y’all surely fixed all my bike problems and got ride of all my worries so quickly. I really thank you so very much with my WHOLE heart. P.S.I will be back soon either this weekend or sometime next week,😂😄😄!
I think the operation was started with good cause in mind and I hope it has helped many. Unfortunately, the set up is very disorganized and the owner can be extremely rude if you do not understand how it works or if you leave your bike for an extended period of time and later try to contact them. I left my bike before leaving town for work; I take full responsibility and understand if it becomes their property after a period of time. But a person has a right to ask the business despite whether it has been 45-90 days or more. As a business you have to have policies that you stick to and this makes sense; however, you never know what an individual is going through or what caused them to not return. You could at the least meet them with good customer service in informing them that they will not be able to get their bike back. It is poor business practice to not inform paying customers of the protocol beforehand. What is more troubling, is as a customer, when I finally made contact, I was lied to and treated aggressively by a self-righteous person on the other end who just wanted to be right. I was never contacted by email or phone (because there was no paperwork or documentation noted when I dropped off the bike). I have definitely learned from this interaction. The owner also stated that I couldn’t have possibly gotten a full voicemail, which I received at least four times over the course of two weeks. All of this subsequent to physically driving to the location multiple times during posted hours in which they were closed. I hope these issues can be resolved in the future.
Awesome, Scott is friendly, knowledgeable, and encouraging...
Lovely place. The owner Scott, while firm and a very no-nonsense, straight shooter kind of guy, is very personable and professional. You can get the help you need to keep it moving forward here. Passing though Tallahassee on your cycling travels? Ask Scott about stopping by for the night, they are always welcoming travelers from near and far.
The fellas here are top notch. I just got my first road bike a couple of months ago and walked in looking for some equipment to help get me started. Scot went to full lengths to make sure I got what I needed and taught me a thing or two. Not only did he/they have extraordinary service and advice, they offered great conversation and numerous laughs! Thanks guys!Bicycle house, indubitably number 1Tell your friends! The end.
Very helpful and courteous
They were very helpful in repairing my bike. The cost was only a donation for the repair, which was cheaper than if I took somewhere else. They will also offer other bike related services that help those in need.
Their mission is to provide bicycle transportation for people, regardless of ability to pay. If you need a bicycle but are low on funds, this is the place to go. Just dont look a gift horse in the mouth. They also fix bikes, and take donations. If you are on a long distance bike tour, they have a place for you to sleep. Not fancy, and you may need to go to the local pool for a shower. Note that the Bicycle House is not prominently visible from FAMU way - its at the back of an industrial area, and looks more like a warehouse than a bike shop.
Good place. Friendly people, teach you how to fix your bikes. A Good will community I would say.
Great ScotGreat place to volunteer, get help fixing your bike, and be involved in the community.
The volunteers at Bicycle House do fantastic work for the community and its a great place to go if you need a cheap bike/bike repair/bike maintenance or if you cant afford one at all.
