Pretty chill game/comic shop. Only complaint is the percentage of market value they are willing to give you when you go to sell some cards for store credit or cash. Way way way low. Other than that its an excellent small town card/game/comic shop.

Gatekeeper Hobbies is a comic book and tabletop gaming store that has been a part of the local community for generations. I visited this store in my childhood and still go to the store as a middle aged adult. The store has moved a couple times during that thirty year span and at the time of this review is located in the shopping area of 21st & Gage. This is not the biggest storefront that the business has used yet is my favorite because Gamers HQ is very close to Gatekeepers Hobbies.I dont play tabletop games so this review will mainly be about my experience shopping for comic books.Gatekeeper Hobbies has all the new issues and newly released trade paperbacks on stock and a moderate amount of back issues. Gatekeeper Hobbies will preorder and if available order anything related to comic books. If you are looking for something in particular then ask the staff and they might be able to help you. I was looking to spend a bit of money on a big key issue and the store was able to facilitate my needs. They had a book for me that wasnt for sale on the wall. I am very satisfied with the purchase. And its good to keep in mind that many of these stores dont keep really expensive books around because robberies do happen.The eye candy wall comic books have been sort of lacking since the store moved into the newer location which makes sense. I will note that the store does get new stock in a lot and the quality (subjective term used) has been increasing. I routinely look at the comics and something that catches my eye almost always just came in from a collection the store bought. The stores wall key issue wall comic books are always changing and IMO getting better.The thing about comic book stores is the closer you become with the shop the better shopping experience the person buying will have. Ive been shopping at this store since the 1990s and have never really had a bad experience. The store will order anything the customer needs and try their best to sell the product for an acceptable price.I will throw-in that this store really emphasizes Magic the Gathering and I believe is the only store currently open that supports that gamer community. If you play that game or others, it would be a good store to check out.

If it isnt magic the gathering you probably wont get much help

This is a good comic store. They dont price gough customers. They have a good selection of older expensive comics I enjoy as a collector. Some employees come off rude at first but after you get to know them its a nice atmosphere and not a lot of stress. You can ask questions and they will explain why comics are key. In this environment there will always be someone you dont see eye to eye with. I just wish they had a better discount for customers with pull lists. If you want to get into card games they will explain how to play. Another plus is they sell fountain drinks and great snacks. They dont just buy soda at a store and charge more. They have a soda machine with large cups or small just like a gas station. There statue kai figures are a great price and they carry exclusive items. They have been in the Topeka area for over 30 years and this was the first place I bought my first comic.

The new location is so nice! Natural light and a lot of space! Gatekeeper has a nice selection of back issues. I found some good stuff there over the years. The worker was very nice and helpful too?

Fun place to visit. Mainly for card gamers as the comic book selection was weak and the hobbies were geared towards one specific hobbyist. Not every comic nerd like myself loves D&D. So I dont like the fact that in this case the nerds were the bullies just because you dont know about, Magic the Gathering or Lord of the Rings. Not everyone wants to be a wizard or a jedi. Some of us just want be adults and collect comics and be able to ask questions without rude employees ignoring our needs because we dont fit theyre standards to be one of the cool kids.

This place has been around since before I first moved to Topeka. Long time central gamers hub, The Gatekeeper is the primary Center for all all things nerd. Great selection of comics, MTG, 40k, as well as a community hub. The Gatekeeper maintains a conservative section in back for gamers to gather and play some games. Although I miss the arcade it once had, the reduced space of the newer shop is used to its fullest.The staff is friendly, well-versed, and ready to be involved. If youre looking for a great spot with an exceptional in house community, this is the place for you.

I really enjoy visiting card/comic shops when I get to a new city. Gatekeeper is exactly what I was hoping for. A good selection of mtg singles. A modest sealed selection. They have a very nice comic collection. If youre in Topeka go check them out.

Amazing!

Completely lowballed 300$ worth of cards (yes. I did my research) and only paid 100$ for them. Not to mention 200$ worth of common and uncommon they wouldnt even consider (and I refused to bring into the deal). Do your research before you sell to them. And when I say 300$ worth of cards Im talking epics and rares that alone would be anywhere from 100$ a card to 30$ a card. Sold them about 100 cards so they basically only paid 1$ per card. At least a 150% profit margin for them. Absolutely dissatisfied. All because Im a female they acted like I didnt know what I had. But the worst part is. I watched the baby another buyer who was Male and they gave him a great deal and didnt give him any insulting dialogue. Absolutely disgusted with this business right now. I didnt even want to sell these cards. I simply had to so I could pay my Bills thanks to COVID.

Love coming in from time to time, always greeted politely by whoever is working (more times than not, the actual owner of the store). Love the selection of comics, but most of all I love coming in to see the new board games, and tabletop systems. I can only wish that their selection of these items was bigger, but I can kind of understand as their main business is through comics. A must stop place for gamers in the Topeka area :)

With the close of the other comics shop in Topeka Gatekeeper is pretty much the last comic bastion in Topeka. I have been going for years the staff is nice and helpful. Its a great local hobby place definitely check them out.

This store is an established part of local culture. Its a medium-sized shop with 2 game rooms in the back.My experience with staff has been overwhelmingly positive.Game rooms are available to the public and spacious enough to be comfortable.If one wants to know about events here, they are presently available on a handwritten dry-erase board in the store or on their website.

Great place. I was introduced to it years ago through a friend, and have gone back on numerous occassions. Since my new found love of the modern tabletop games, I end up walking out with a new game, and expansions to old ones every time. If they dont have what I am looking for? No problem! They will order it for me. Their comic collection is also rather significant, so if you are still doing the pulp, this is a great place to go.

If youre looking for comic books or Magic the Gathering cards, this is the place to go. They have a wall of current issues as well as trade paperbacks. Huge display of back issues with all sorts of different series. I actually managed to find a couple gems missing from my collection, and the prices were very fair. They have a small selection of Warhammer/40k as well as paints for them. There were a handful of board games, and a small section for D&D (I wish they had the minis stocked a bit better) although not quite as much as I hoped for. As far as MtG goes, they have a good selection of singles, plenty of packs, as well as accessories. They have a few tables for people to hang out and play, and I even watched a group playing a tense game of Magic. The employees were both knowledgable and friendly. I recommend the store and guarantee Ill be stopping there the next time Im in Topeka.

Excellent access to a variety of comics. Has multiple types of gaming and RPG products. If they dont have it they can order it for you kindly and without a hassle. Prices are probably average for a privately owned gaming store of this size.

I have been collecting comics for two and a half decades and in Kansas I have not found a more knowledgeable, willing staff to help me in my passion for this art form. These guys and gals have been in it for a long time and even if they decide to restructure in the future Ill be following their pursuits and they will be receiving my business.

The owner is a great guy, who is very knowledgeable and friendly when it comes to the business he’s in. He’s always a big help definitely recommend buying here.

A lot of fun, but I recommend Huscarls higher. If you only want to play MtG though, gatekeeper is better, as Huscarls has enough people playing Warhammer, DnD, and other table tops, that its hard to play outside of the designated Magic days.

Really dissapointed with this place. I decided I wanted to put my money into a local business instead of spending it online and I thought it would be nice to have physical comic instead of the digital ones I get online. Clearly I was stupid for wanting to do that.I go in and look around for 5 or 10 minutes on the day the ones I wanted were supposed to be released. Couldnt find them. Ask the cashier about them and he says if they arent out there then they had sold out. This is at 5 oclock on a school day with the place being almost totally empty. I say ok, Thanks and go home and get them my usual way. While reading the author notes at the end I find out that while the comics consistently sell out the demand from the stores had gone down and was begging people not to under buy. It totally made sense to me then why at the Planet Comic Con a few weeks prior these comics that were only a few months old were being resold for $20 to $50 dollars.Comic stores such as this one were under buying these comics so they could resell them at an outrageous rate. I am very disappointed they would treat their customers this way. I would have really liked to buy my comics from them but they have lost out on money by trying to rip off their customers.
