I have been using Northland Tool (NTE) for years through a couple different companies Ive been with. They have always provided timely and effective service of my spindles. I had a particularly challenging one with a Schneider Generator that we worked very closely to resolve and even though ultimately we found the issue was not having a dedicated pulley and spindle nut married to the high speed spindle, NTE assisted onsite and covered the rebuild under warranty. Their expedite service has got me out of many jams. NTE is knowledgeable, fully capable, home grown, and attentive to the needs of their customers. As a Facilities/ Maintenance Manager they remain one of the best tools in my tool kit!
Weve been rebuilding spindles since 1979, and weve had a lot of happy customers over the years. Here are some testimonials from customers that have been delighted with Northland Tools spindle repair service:All-in-all, everything is running good… It’s great not to be sending spindles out on a regular basis since you addressed my problems, but I know they will still be coming sooner or later. Never a problem when we get them back, run better than new. Hope everything is ok there. Please tell everyone there that we here appreciate everything that you do to keep us up and running and the quick turnarounds. Have dealt with the rest now deal with the best. Have a great week end and up and coming holiday.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsI really didn’t expect this; You guys really pulled it off! My many thanks to your outstanding crew for helping us get back into production.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsThank you, we just received spindle today and WOW ! What a nice job. Can’t wait to use it. Thank the Northland team for us for a job well done.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsBoth of the spindles that you repaired are on the machines and running great. We don’t have any spares for those grinders. We probably will not be purchasing a spare, as you have been able to turn around the repairs quickly and the price of a spare is cost prohibitive.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsI am writing to thank Northland Tool for going the extra mile and saving my company from expensive machine downtime and expensive repairs. We have always sent our Chiron spindles for repair as a shaft with bearings. None of our previous rebuilders pointed out the bearing fretting or the fact that the housing in the machine was out of tolerance and causing premature failure to the spindles. After Northland fixed the housings the spindles have never sounded as good or run as well! Great job guys!– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsThe detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months. Northland Tools evaluation showed that the hydraulic nuts were not holding the assembly together causing premature spindle failure. We discussed this in detail and mutually decided to modify the spindle shaft to prevent this from occurring again. The first spindle we performed this on is still in the machine running like new after 3 years. That’s over three times the life of previous repairs and it’s still going strong. Easily over $40,000.00 of savings so far on that one machine and counting.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsYour people go above and beyond when it comes to spindle repair. When we had difficulty with the spindle installation and we were able to talk directly to a spindle technician that helped us troubleshoot the issue it helped us out of a bind. We have sent several spindles to you and have nothing but great things to say.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsThank you for your attention with my quick turn spindle repair. Your status updates allowed me to plan around machine downtime and I now know that you deliver on your promises. In the past other spindle repair vendors talked a big game and consistently failed to deliver. You not only delivered my spindle before the due date but you kept me informed throughout the entire repair process.– Customer, Northland Tool & ElectronicsYou performed a miracle with my BIG PLUS spindle. After crashing the spindle severely damaging the taper we found that a replacement spindle was not only cost prohibitive but had a long delivery. Your repair was a fraction of the cost of new and you never would know that the spindle was damaged to the extent it was.– Customer, Northland Tool & Electronics
Avoid. Run, don’t walk away!We paid Northland to rebuild a spindle for a 2018 Okuma M560 vertical mill earlier this year that was damaged due to an accident. Upon receiving the spindle back and after having it reinstalled, we noticed abnormal vibration. Fast forward several months and the spindle failed. We sent it back to Northland and paid to have it repaired again due to the fact they would not honor any kind of warranty for their first repair attempt. Upon receiving it back again and paying to have it reinstalled again, the spindle was spewing oil and inoperable. We sent it back yet again (3rd time) only to have it leak out oil all over the place and fail to run properly after paying Okuma factory service once again to reinstall it. The service techs showed us that the spindle was still profusely leaking oil and would fry the bearings if we ran it.We thought we were saving money by using Northland. Their price to rebuild the spindle was around $10k, vs $20k for Okuma to do it. Huge mistake. We are now out over $60k between paying Northland twice, paying for 4 spindle removals and reinstallations, plus $15k for another company (Setco) to finally rebuild the spindle properly. That doesn’t include the months of downtime on the machine. Halfway into this we sorely wished we could just pay the $20k to Okuma to end this nightmare. However, because Northland totally screwed up the internals, Okuma would no longer allow for a core exchange and instead required us to buy a new spindle for $60k.Out of desperation to avoid paying Okuma $60k for a brand new spindle, we called nearly every spindle rebuilder to find out who could salvage this mess. During that process we found out that Northland has a fairly poor industry reputation. It is a shame we didn’t know that from day 1.Using Northland was the most expensive single mistake in the history of our company both in terms of total out of pocket costs of $60k and nearly $100k in downtime for our 24/7 shop. After all this, Northland would not agree to any kind of refund. Instead they yelled at our director of operations over the phone and they are disputing our credit card chargeback. Northland’s communications with us have been incredibly unprofessional.Check out Nortlands BBB. Apparently we are not the first company theyve scammed. You cannot find a worse company to use for a spindle repair than Northland. I hope this review saves you from experiencing a similar disaster.Update to response: We did not use a third party installer. Work was done by the OEM after we experienced the first set of issues. We sent the spindle to Northland 3 times while the machine was down for months. We could not chance a 4th time with more months of downtime. It was very clear Northland had not repaired the spindle on the 1, 2, and 3rd times. Also Northland said they would pay for return freight, but instead billed it to us collect, contrary to their word. Lastly, the chargeback has NOT been decided in Northlands favor.
