I cant give the Owners of Music Folk and Matthew (Banjo/Folk Instrument Luthier) more praise. I had a warranty issue with a brand new instrument that the manufacturer couldnt resolve because of supply chain backup. I thought I was high and dry. Instead, Matthew discussed the matter with the Manufacturer and the Owners who offered an exchange of the same instrument. However, after Matthew patiently listened to and allayed my fears as a beginner banjo player by explaining the tonal benefits of different woods, heads, tuners, bridges, tailpieces, tone rings, strings, and setups, I realized I needed to upgrade to a more expensive, higher quality instrument. Why? Trust. The degree of expertise and care was extraordinary. Matthew even swapped out the bridge to perfect the action height before I left the store. With products and service like this, the only thing bad about this place is youll keep coming back to buy more stuff, like that dulcimer...or maybe that vintage Telecaster..oh, well, music is self-care...

The best acoustic guitar shop in Saint Louis, especially if you are looking for a quality guitar at an affordable price. Andy does excellent work on setups, repairs and refinishing. Also, a nice selection of used guitars. Nice selection of Martin and Guild.

This is going to get wordy...I had a simply magical acoustic guitar, a Yairi YM-1, I bought in roughly 1994-95 destroyed by an airline in 2008. The guitar became like an old friend after spending many thousands of hours playing it - It pretty much never left my side through those years. I never before or since played a guitar that sounded better. At the same time it also played as good as any other guitar and had a look that just fit me. Over the years I looked into getting it fixed or trying to fix it myself as a labor of love, but was never given any reassurance of it ever playing or sounding the same, so I just left it in its case and stored it in the closet. Fast-forward to 2021...I own several Yairi guitars and have always been on the lookout for one that might have some similarity to the old YM-1. When I saw Music Folk post a DY-61 on Reverb for a good price, I had to stop in the store (never had been there before). I ended up buying it but got to talking to one of the reps there about their instrument repair service. Basically I got that they have several luthiers there, and that a couple of them have been at it for something like 40 years (I think they are co-owners of the shop) and that they are authorized by C.F. Martin. It seemed worth it to take my old YM-1 in to have them look at it, so I did. I feel bad that I didnt pay any attention to anyones names there, but one of the head luthiers took the guitar to the shop and got a close look. It gave me confidence when he returned and said it was repairable - and the quote he gave was very reasonable. I didnt care what it ended up looking like - I just wanted it to be structurally sound. Keep in mind the guitar top was smashed in, top brace broken, the back where the neck block is secured was cracked and allowing it to wiggle, the top and bottom had a few cracks from it living in a West Texas closet for years, and the side had a hole in it where an ice scraper had punctured its way through. I just got it back yesterday and all I can say is thank you. The guitar is back to its old glory with a just a few more battle scars. They did a fantastic job on the repair, and also with staying right on target with their quote in both time and cost. Ill add too that my guitar buying experience was also very good. They are there to help, but dont hover around you. Check these guys out if you need a repair or are looking for an acoustic/other folk-type instrument. Theyve got something for about anyone when it comes to that. I can only say positive things and a give a big thank you again.

This is the best specialty music store in the country. They have a great collection and knowledge of antiques and rare instruments. They will also go above and beyond to help beginners looking for a lifelong passion. The staff is very helpful, and will really spend the time necessary to find exactly what you need to fit your budget, even if they don’t have it in stock! Worth the drive, or even the flight!

Bought my first nylon stringed guitar at Music Folk yesterday. Ive been playing for about 30 years and have a Taylor, Martin and an old lawsuit Takamine 12 string.I also play the ukulele (Kamaka and customs) and decided I wanted to try a nylon stringed guitar. I dont like the fat necks that are on most classical guitars. So I was talking to the guy at the counter about all that and he said, Youre going to want a hybrid or crossover. He took me to the back wall, pointed out 5 different guitars in different price ranges. Invited me to play one and I bought the first one in about 3 minutes of playing it.I rarely write reviews, but if youre looking for a great shop with a knowledgeable staff, go to Music Folk.

This is a great music store/repair and modification shop. They know their craft and can take care of your beloved instrument. Everyone is helpful and very knowledgeable. They tuned up my acoustic guitar to perfection, I had to stop playing and write this review to show my appreciation for taking care of my instrument like their own. They don’t just sell instruments, they are highly talented craftsmen and musicians.

I got a new classical guitar here. Staff was totally familiar with the whole range of instruments and gave me lots of room to try out guitars across price ranges. Impressive, well-vetted selection of guitars available (none covered in dust like at GC). They encouraged me to get the instrument which best suited my needs, which was *not* the most expensive guitar either.I agree with other reviews that this store might be best for someone who already has a good idea of what they need in an instrument, but Im not sure how much of that is the stores culture and how much of that is just guitarists being guitarists.

This is absolutely my favorite music store! I have made purchases here several times over the years and its always been a pleasant experience. Yesterday I checked their website and saw that they had a number of vintage Martin guitars so I drove down to play them all. Unlike a competing local shop, which Ive also reviewed, I was welcomed warmly and told to ask for anything I needed, picks, tuner, etc. A stool was set up for me and I was told to play anything I liked. One guitar, a 1943 Martin 00-17, was pointed out as being particularly sweet. They all called it the fire guitar because it had survived a fire and had minor scorch marks on the headstock. I played 7 or 8 different guitars, new and old, but the staff was right, the fire guitar definitely had the Martin mojo! They all played it goodbye 😊 and it went home with me. What a great guitar buying experience!!!P.S. Many thanks to Matthew and Suzy for another fun guitar buy. I love my new vintage Gibson archtop too!

Ive stopped by a few times and found the staff friendly and knowledgeable. They helped me find music books that suit me for hammered dulcimer (which I rented from this place) and classical guitar. Someone took the time to show me around the classical guitars for sale even though I didnt purchase one that day.

I had a negative experience at first. Ive gone in here to amend my review. One particular staff member, Collin, was kind enough to get my guitar back in working order. I happy to say that my Parker has never played so nice and sounded so good.I love being wrong. I originally gave the shop two stars and they definitely deserve at least 5 for fixing the problems.

I like the vibe of the store. The sales staff is friendly and patient. Yes, there is some pricey stuff on the shelves. But to their credit, Music Folk was also one of the few places to stock the Danelectro discount instruments back in the day. Theres a wide variety. Oh, in case you didnt know -- they favor acoustic instruments, including banjos and mandolins. Hence the folk in Music Folk.Uh... One caveat: Parking absolutely sucks. You really have to WANT to shop there to hunt for a space on Big Bend and then walk three blocks to the store.

I went here for almost two years to rent cellos simply because we thought there was no better option. I will say, the staff is moderately helpful, but they are usually arrogant and daunting, they make you feel small. And I know, cellos and other string instruments arent their specialty, but the quality of the instruments was very very poor. I traded in three different cellos until I was fed up and left.Extra note: They said the cello was 3/4 size two years ago, it was half. I was playing the wrong size for a full year.

Webster Groves is a neat area with all these old charming houses & whatnot but you cannot look at them because Big Bend is so busy/chaotic/stressful...Finally saw Music Folk but it has no parking lot so far as I could tell...Had to keep driving & do an eventual u turn & what not...Came back and first nearby streets with parking lots that had signs about Towing Cars...Bottom line: I am not sure where you are supposed to park if you want to go to this quaint lil store...I parked in some random parking lot not too far away & was never sure if it was legal or not....Once entering the store, I had a favorable impression overall...lots of cool instruments and the staff seemed very friendly to me, not the snobs so many other reviewers alluded to...So I give the place a 5 for product and friendliness and a Big Fat Zero for driving stress and wtf u park????Evens out to an overall 4

I would be very skeptical of buying guitars from this store. they claim they are such experts.yet they sell guitars at very high prices and there not even sure they can back up the claims the make about their expensive guitars.you would better going to going somewhere elce. unless you are very careful about due diligence in checking on exactly what your getting..When you want to sell them something its not worth much. after they by it and hang it up its suddenly worth a whole lot more. the trouble is the have an lot of equipement. you would better going to gravity strings or aceme guitars. they are trustworthy

I dont really leave reviews simply because I am lazy. After visiting Music Folk multiple times, I had no choice but to write one.First of all, guys there is a public parking lot right behind the store! it is about 40-50 steps away from the store haha... i had to count today because some people were complainingStaffs=musiciansThey really respect people who love music and appreciate instruments. The store has many many selection of acoustic guitars. Martin, stonebridge, alvarez, gibson, huss and dalton, eastman, guild... you name it.Some instruments may be a little more pricy compared to those sold online. But the instruments sold here are very well maintained and set up. If not, they will professionally set up for you. Why would you purchase a guitar without playing it? I dont mind buying a cheap one via online. I cannot really risk buying an expensive one without playing it. Trust me, even the same models have variability in regards to sound and playability. If you want to buy any instrument, go ahead and purchase online. You may be lucky. If you want to buy the right one, visit here and check their selections out.
