I take my wifes 96 year old Uncle there to have his violin serviced. Mr. Judd takes exceptional care of him and goes above and beyond normal standards. Would highly recommend J. R. Judd to anyone looking for a stringed instrument.

I dropped by on a whim then was delighted by the massive inventory and the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. I was immediately comfortable enough to make my planned investment in a cello. Their inventory allowed me to select and try the perfect instrument for me. John observed my style and helped fit me to a 7/8 Eastman with custom strings. It was a great experience.

I had a great experience purchasing a bow recently at J.R. Judd’s. A friend recommended this shop to me and I finally took the trip. The space I tried bows in was very comfortable and organized. I narrowed my search down to several bows, which I then took back home for my teacher to try. We both agreed on the same bow, which I felt was perfect for me. Mr. Judd guided my choices by explaining how the weight, balance, and firmness of the stick influences playability. He also gave me some background on each of the bows I selected. I love that I could really take my time.They gave me box and shipping label before I left so I had everything I needed to return the bows I wasn’t purchasing. I also found a new shoulder rest! There are a lot of violin shops in my area, but none with such excellent service. If you’re considering a new violin or bow, definitely visit this shop!

Wonderful experience here purchasing a viola for our daughter! Mr. Judd and all of his staff were friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. We are not from the area, but they graciously worked with us to make it as easy as possible to return the violas she ended up not choosing.

This is during the covid outbreak. I called least 5 other places. This place responded quickly and sent me 3 violins of excellent quality to review before purchase and 5 bows. The professionalism and expertise are apparent and the owner talked to me personally multiple times at my convenience. This shop knows what they are doing and I will continue doing business with them for a long time.

Without a doubt, Jeff is one of the most personable and knowledgeable professionals you could ever hope to deal with. I have purchased two violins for my daughter at Judd and our experiences on both occasions were well beyond my expectations. Jeff takes an inordinate amount of time to explain every aspect of the instruments and at no time did I ever feel the need to hurry. He is also not just a retailer, but a fine craftsman who knows every detail of his instruments. I cannot think of even one aspect of our experiences that I am the least bit unhappy with. Oh, I have to add that I looked all over Gods creation for a purple GEWA case just before Christmas as a gift for my daughter and failed in every avenue... until I spoke to Jeff. I dont know how he managed, but he had it for me the day before Christmas! I cannot imagine ever purchasing another instrument anywhere else!

Super friendly and informative! We met the owner and he gave us a tour of the store. He knew a lot about string instruments and he actually works on them/assembles some in his shop! Great place, they werent pushing or pressuring my family to get a more expensive instrument! I can tell he cares a lot about customers and their interests!! 100% recommend!!

Just bought a beautiful upgraded violin for my son. Excellent experience with Mr. Judd sharing stories about each violin, the history of how violins are made, and he even played for us. Mr. Judd was never pushy and extremely patient. Over the years when we were ready to upgrade our instruments from the student version we would always go to JR Judd. They have an extremely generous trade-in program and excellent staff. I have bought 3 violins (1 for myself and 1 for my 2 sons) and a cello for my daughter over the years. Each experience was unique and special. The 2 hour and 15 minutes drive one-way is totally worth it. I wont go anywhere else for my string instrument purchases.

Brilliant!!! Mr. Judd came right in, helped choose violins to try and even played them! The staff was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and inviting. The instruments...I cant begin to express the difficulties I had in choosing from all of the wonderful instruments, but Mr. Judd was so helpful - he made it so much easier! He even gave us a tour to boot!! THIS is THE place to buy a violin, viola, cello, or bass!!!

I have been dealing with Judds, mostly in the bass department, for 5-6 years. Without exception, I have found the people there to be friendly and accommodating. They have a big stock of instruments. Quality of service I have gotten has been excellent; they do good work and give good advice. Judds is a real resource for string players all over north-central Pennsylvania.

Just the most wonderful violin shop! They have several beautiful show rooms filled with quality violins, violas and cellos. The people at JR Judd Violins are just so friendly ; they take the time to meet with you to answer any questions that you may have. I have bought two violins here and I am just thrilled with both of them. This shop was well worth my drive from New Jersey. They just exceed expectations and will even send violin bows directly to your house for trial purposes. I find most violin shops to be kind of, well snoody. I figured its because Im a fiddler that learned by ear and cant read a lick of music; or maybe because I look like a punk. I kind of expect to be judged at most shops. Im from out of town staying with family during covid and popped a string so I looked these folks up. I honestly had the nicest experience Ive ever had in a violin shop here. Mr. Judd even put my new strings on for me at no charge and encouraged me to play any of the violins for sale. Their prices are incredibly fair. 12/10 will come back here. Thanks!

Very detailed and knowledgeable, with a nice selection of cellos, upright basses, violas, and violins (of course). I am a newbie to violins, so the staff playing helped immensely with decisions on sound quality. Also up-front with prices. Includes playable violins over a century old to the near present. Website is great, but you can only see and hear the true character and beauty of each in real life. Exceptional service (phone included), and even a tour of their selections during noon lunch hour! Website is updated to reflect models no longer in stock after sale.

You have to see this place to believe it. The luttiers all take time to demonstrate their craft. The amount of care that they put into their instruments is also put into their customers!

Mr. Judd does fantastic work, and Valerie in the front reception area is delightful. They are extremely knowledgeable and the instruments are excellent quality!

I am no longer a customer at this music store. Keep these things in mind when shopping for instruments for your child. Your child will grow, so the instrument will grow with them. Meaning you will need to size up periodically until your child has grown to a full size. This requires communication and scheduling times to switch instruments. Unless you’re able to travel to the store yourself, then communication can be very poor and they typically visit once every 1-2 months. I ran into an issue, where my daughter went a very long time without an instrument. There was a lot of miscommunication and lack of communication that caused this situation to be so stressful. However, emails were unanswered, and it was hard to get someone to answer the phone. When I finally received a response, I was told by the very Jeffrey Judd himself that they were busy helping 1200 other students in the state. Customer service is poor to say the least, I won’t go into more detail about what was said to me mainly bc I’m trying to be nice. They seemed to be spread too thin to give all their customers who have instruments the attention that is needed. Maybe they give this kind of attention to only the customers they value. So just keep these things in mind when shopping here.

The folks at JR Judd are personable and customer service is wonderful! We have been going to JR Judd for rental, purchases, and repairs for our daughters cello for 6 years. They spend time with their customers and are really accommodating and knowledgeable. If you need special attention and require more time I suggest call ahead and they will tell you the best time to come so that they can work with you.

So we drove 1hr45min from New York to visit J.R.Judd Violins. Much to our dismay, the store was closed. As we got ready to leave, another vehicle pulls in the driveway. A man walks up and I explained my daughter was looking for a new Cello but the store was closed. Without missing a beat, he says Sure, come on in! We will find what you need. It turns out this was Mr. Judd himself, he was there to do some work, after hours. He really went out of his way for my family. Customer service is alive and well in Williamsport, PA at J.R.Judds! Amazing place!

I am a student cellist who recently went to J.R Judd Violins to get my full size instrument. I got great service, and the cello sounds wonderful. They also deal wonderfully with repairs.

They will sell you an instrument and tell you they will buy it back later. That is not the case. Buy your instumemts elsewhere.

Whenever I need to have my violins serviced, I always schedule a trip to J.R. Judd Violins. Jeff, Jerry, and the other luthiers are always extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Judds prices are reasonable, and the quality of the work is excellent.When my fiddle case took a tumble out of the car in mid 2012--chipping the edge of my 18th century instrument--Jerry effected the repairs so perfectly that nobody could tell that the violin was ever damaged!Also, Ive taken a prospective instrument--not one of Judds fiddles--in for evaluation. The luthiers gave me their fair and (if youll pardon the pun) unvarnished opinion of the instrument.Im very happy to recommend Excellent ratings for J.R. Judd Violins in all categories.
