I was trying to head back home after a weekend in Wilmington with my family (including a restless 3 year old) when my battery light came on. I called and/or went to three other places before stumbling on to Custer Auto Repair. As they looked over the vehicle we sat in the waiting room hoping for the best but also game planning an unexpected hotel stay. All said and done they had us back on the road within about an hour and a half for a new alternator. If I lived in Wilmington this would be my main shop and I cant recommend them enough for their quality work, willingness to accommodate, fair prices and excellent staff. Highly recommended.

Custers was recommended to us by a family member who has used them several times for his commercial vehicles. Were so happy we took our truck to Custers for an exhaust manifold repair. Its tricky and many places dont do it. Custers did a great job and charged a very reasonable price! We wont hesitate to use them again and highly recommend.

2016 Kia Sorento with 43,000 miles. Local Kia dealer {Coastal} wanted to replace brake pads for $480 plus strongly suggested brake and transmission fluids be changed for $260 more. On recommendation of friends went to Custers. Great experience. Spent $370 for the brakes. They checked the fluids and reported they were not even close to requiring replacement. Very pleased with this honest shop.

I moved to the area just over a year ago and have since had to bring in two cars for a total of three services.1) Oil change on a newer car. Fair price and did great work.2) They replaced the fuel pump on my 1987, northern truck which has rust problems. It took them a few days but that was expected. They did a great job and worked around the rust the best they could. The price was VERY reasonable3) took the newer car back in for another oil change and a radiator hose replacement. Again very fair price and great work.I will continue to take my cars to Custers auto with confidence and knowing I wont get ripped off.

Service engine light was on. When serviced the light was off so they couldnt diagnose a problem. Had a/c repaired given the trouble to get the truck there. Days later the battery was dying. When replacing, found my 14 month old battery had been replaced with an older used battery. Custers states they know nothing about the battery problems. Wont be going back.

The folks at Custer have worked hard to keep our old PT Cruiser running. Theyve replaced the starter twice, due to a faulty part in the starter, for free, under the warranty. Plus free towing. They really do stand behind their warranty. Hopefully, nothing else will break on the car. But if something does go bad, well have Custer fix it. And its always a pleasure dealing with Tiffany at the front desk.

I highly recommend Custer Auto. They seem very honest and their prices were better than any other mechanic I had been to in the area. Unfortunately I didnt get much time with them before we realized my transmission had hit the end of his little road. But they were super sweet to me and didnt even charge me for the work it took to get to that bad news ~which saved me from my normal post-mechanic tears. Also they have a really cool parking lot with a tree in the middle. ♡

Having zero knowledge about an auto and having always been very skeptical of repairs I have finally found a place to take my car and know I will be treated fairly and kindly! I went here many years ago when I lived in NC. I originally went to Firestone first and they had told me that my condenser needed to be repaired and it was going to cost around $1200. I don’t know about this location but I’ve always had Firestone work on all my cars and they have always been reasonable and fair.. but something told me to check around first. I called Custer and his response was let’s look at it first because in all his 25-30 yrs of business he’s only had to fix maybe 3 or 4 condensers in Nissans. I took it to him and what needed to be fix was only like $25 or $50. It’s been a few yrs (2016) so I can’t exactly remember what was needed or how much it was but it was something so small I couldn’t believe that Firestone tried to charge me $1200 to fix something that didn’t need to be fixed.. not to mention what needed to be fixed would have needed to still be fixed so who’s to say that if I had them do it they wouldve probably kept trying “fix” stuff on my car that didn’t need to be fixed. And I just sold my 2005 Altima a few months ago and guess what? I never had to change my condenser.This is the most honest, reasonable repair shop I have ever seen and I wish we had one in every state. You will never have to worry about them lying or kicking your teeth in. He could have changed my condenser for far less than Firestone and still made a ton off of me but he chose the honest route. You are in very good hands with this shop.

Took my car into Custers to have them check out a noise coming from my suspension, and to inspect one of my tires. The noise ended up being from a loose strut, which they tightened up, and my tire was just fine. They didnt even charge me for the bit of work they did, they could have easily sold me a tire and I wouldnt have had a second thought! I just moved to town and am happy to found a good honest mechanic. They will be getting any repair/inspection business I have, and I will be recommending them to others!

Had a recent squeak in my older truck. Took it in and diagnosed well-over-worn brakes (my term). Good quote, diagnosis, and repair (my Dad was a mechanic for 40 years, so I know good work). One day for a complete all-four brake job. Reasonable price and good follow-up. I enjoy the no nonsense addressing of my auto problems, and for a quality stand-behind-their-work attitude. Ill go back myself and would recommend them highly.

They always took the time to help me understand the repairs that I would need and WHY I would need them. When asked, they would show me when possible what was wrong with my car. They never talked down to me or pressured me into making repairs. Instead, they provided me with options and recommendations. I appreciated the honesty and quality of work done here. Took my truck here for a valve cover gasket replacement and was charged $450, which is about $200 more than Ive ever paid for similar repairs. At the very least, I would expect this to translate to quality service. However, they failed to properly put the upper radiator hose back in place, and a week later it came out and sprayed coolant all over my engine. Because I was in traffic and couldnt pull over immediately, my engine became seriously overheated which can have severe consequences. Given the high reviews of this place, I was supremely disappointed. Friendly staff, though.

I dont usually review places, but Custers is always quick and they do great work. One of the best places to go, they are up front about costs and dont try to overcharge.

I have lived in Wilmington four years. Had a good mechanic in Fayetteville had no luck here. Thats where we moved from. Xterra starter went bad and a friend who had a tow truck recommended these guys. He was correct they were great. Prices were reasonable and service was excellent. Come here first.

Hydrolocked my 2001 Mustang and was worried rods we;re bent or the engine was shot. Car wouldnt run and it was towed to Custers and all they did was lube the cylinder walls since the piston rings rusted to the cylinder wall. After that I didnt have an issue, I sold the car and always wondered if the rods were bent and snapped and went through the block but my point is Custers got me driving again an hour labor.

The best auto shop in Wilmington. The staff is honest, friendly and easy to communicate with. I will be going here for all my repair needs from now on.

This review encompasses 5 years of experience with Custers. I moved up here from Florida over 7 years ago now. It took me 2 years of getting ripped off by multiple local repair shops to find a repair shop that was honest and fair and I am guy that used to rebuild engines, so I know a thing or two about fixing cars. If you are looking for a car repair shop that will give a fair price for the work they do and do the work they said theyd do, this is the place to go.With 4 teenage drivers who are now college age drivers with one graduated and married, I have have dealt with owning at least 12 vehicles in the last 7 years (2 vehicles per child courtesy of the prerequisite accidents and a couple for my wife and I). Chip has had the responsibility of repairing all of them. Has inspected a number of them before purchase and has done an outstanding job in keeping our car repair costs to a minimum while keeping all of our vehicles on the road. After those bills were paid out of their bank accounts, I do not have to tell them to take it to Custers anymore.Are they perfect? Of course not. Nobody is EVER perfect. What they do have is an owner and staff that have integrity; a rare quality in Wilmington NC. They are honest, reliable and will help you to keep your vehicle reliable and safe at a very fair price. What they will not do, is rip you off, create repairs that didnt exist, charge you for work they did not do, recommend work you do not need, and they wont send you out the door without backing up the work they did.The bottom line is this; if you go anywhere else to have your vehicle worked on in Wilmington NC, you are inviting the predator shops in this town an opportunity to steal from you.
