I stumbled upon this place by accident. I meant to go to another cafe, but this DID NOT disappoint. We have all enjoyed our food and service was more than accommodating. I had the fried chicken sandwich, Buffalo style and when I say that was THE BEST chicken sandwich I have ever had, I mean it with sincerity. The chicken was sooooo juicy! I shared a flight mimosa with my boyfriend. We got the Cinnamon pear, pumpkin apple pie (I think that’s what it’s called), cranberry ginger and caramel apple. They were all delicious, but if we had to pick our favorite, it would be the pumpkin apple pie. It was literally fall in a mimosa. We will be coming back for more and trying the desserts next time.
Food, service, wait time everything was great. They were accommodating for our group though we had to wait a bit longer. Not super fancy but for a homestyle feel thus is the place. You could tell they had regulars, wish I couldve tasted the bakery items but most definitely on my list to return. Sorry we took videos of the food and theyre not supported here.
Edited review Breakfast: 4 starsWe ate outside this time and went for breakfast. The mocha cafe coffee was great and the pancakes were pretty good too. The eggs and bacon was pretty average. Nothing bad and pretty agreeable food. The menus we received this time wer clean and not stick and the table looked freshly cleaned. Overall a pretty decent time. Make sure to ask for salt if you like a little flavor to your eggs. Our outdoor waiter was super nice and checked on us everytime he passed. He did a great job and I wish I know his name to give him credit.Original Review Lunch: 3 stars. We were very excited to come since it always had a line, but maybe it was an off day for them? Our table was sticky and the menu was dirty. Our meal was pretty lackluster for 35+ dollars. We both ordered the buttermilk fried chicken plus two sides. It was small for 14 dollars. Thebroccoli had a weird taste and the potatoes were on similar levels as KFC. The meal itself wasnt bad, but it was amazing either. The soda was also just a little flat. The servers were nice and just let us be for most of our meal. There were also multiple flies in the restaurant, but it was a hot summer day.
Great service! Good food. Music too loud to be able to carry on a conversation.
Ive been eating at this restaurant since 1994. Its a favorite for me for many reasons. The food is always great and the service is as well. My son loves their pancakes. Ive never once in all of these years had a bad meal or service. I visit as often as possible when Im in Winston salem.
The Midtown Cafe & Dessertery Experience.. (Carryout Experience). I walked in today with a sweet tooth and wanted to sink my teeth into a nice piece of cake. Well... to be honest, it has been a while since I have been here for a piece of cake. I left slightly disappointed in the size of their slices. I got their five flavor pound cake and a chocolate chip cookie, and after digesting the cookie and the cake.I felt like something has changed with the flavor and texture of the cake from what I remembered. I have been coming to Midtown for years off and on without telling my age, lol. However, unsure if I will be back. I did not feel the five flavors stud out in the cake, and it felt heavier on the pineapple side. The cookie was subpar compared to your typical chocolate chip cookie.
Fried fish and fries were well worth the money. The Dessertery Cheesecake was out of this world.
I am from out of town was here about a month ago then returned. The fish and grits are fantastic aa well as the pecan pie. Have told family members who live in the area about the place and they love it as well. Everything we have had is fantastic!!!!
This has been our go-to weekend brunch spot for about two years (breakfast + lunch menu). The wait times fluctuate, but can be extensive during peak times (due to covid and spaced seating of customers/cleaning). Be ready to give your phone number and wait in the car or outside for 20-50 minutes until you get a message that a table is ready. The service can *rarely* be a miss when it’s really busy, but overall (90% of the time) the service meets or exceeds customer needs and expectations during the rush. The food is ALWAYS excellent, the desserts (including take-home) are always delicious, and the atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. If you have not been and live locally or are visiting, give it a try and you won’t be disappointed. You may even happen to find it is *your spot* now as well.I usually get an egg combo with sweet potato pancakes and coffee, or the shrimp and grits bowl with a mimosa. Both are always excellent!
Service was friendly and fast. We inquired about the grits, asking if they were dairy free, meaning no butter or milk product. Server stated there was no dairy in the grits and they only use water, which really surprised me but excitedly ordered them with all our meals (gluten and dairy free family). The grits were definitely not dairy free and will now be sick the rest of our road trip. They need to train staff on ingredients or have them ask the kitchen if they have a patron that specifically states they have food restrictions.
Delicious food, great service! Unquestionably one of the best restaurants in Winston Salem. 5 star restaurant. Will definitely be a regular from now on.
This place is lovely! Loved the atmosphere in the cafe. Drew was a wonderful server. Very sweet. The food was amazing! Their home fries are soft in the middle and crunchy on the outside. The pancakes were light and fluffy and they make their own maple syrup. Bought some of their homemade pimento cheese to take home. DELICIOUS!
Always good. Mariana was our server and she was very attentive and friendly. Food was yummy, place was busy but didn’t have to wait. Consider this a regular “go to” place in Winston.
Super delicious food that you smell before you even get off the exit! We had brunch and the sweet potato pancakes were simply exquisite 👌🏽
I had met the owners earlier in the day last Saturday, and we had a great time talking. When they told me they owned a restaurant I decided to go check it out!I got the western omelet with sausage instead of ham, and the pumpkin pancakes. It was a delicious diner style meal and an extremely fair price. If you want a casual dining experience at a fair price, in an environment that looks very upscale, check this place out! It’s fantastic!
Great service and well prepared food! Love this place!!
Desserts are easily some of the best in the area! Not much to complain about here, absolutely delicious food and great waitstaff. One of my favorite local restaurants, and I have lived here for 36 years.
The service here was very good, Im sorry I cant say the same for the food. I had the southwest omelette with an order of pancakes. The taste wasnt quite as bad as the presentation but the omelette definitely had a watery taste. The pancakes arrived lukewarm and couldnt melt the accompanying butter. The desserts looked tasty but I decided to pass after my less-than- average meal. At first the atmosphere of the place seemed inviting, but having to endure an extremely wobbly table and potted plants invading my personal space at an already small booth lessened my opinion of the atmosphere as well. For the price of the meal, the portions could not be considered generous. The best I can say of my experience is that it was OKAY.
Outside dining area is beautiful. Waitress was charming. Food was delicious. Desserts were excellent, we even took a whole pie home. Dont miss it. Easy highway access.
This was a classic American breakfast place. Big portions and okay but not great food. My family and I ordered two eggs and sausage, and it came with three pancakes. The portions were ridiculous so we ended up leaving a lot of food. Coffee was below average and sugary. Setting was fine. Big place with lots of seating. Service was fine but they forgot to bring my drink. Overall an average restaurant. If the American breakfast is what you want it is what you will get!
This place was amazing! Molly is hands down one of the best servers Ive ever had. The atmosphere was very nice, (loved the subtle music playing in the background) and they have a very nice sized menu with plenty of options for adults and kids. Will definitely come back to try more food. The caramel latte tasted fantastic and the meatloaf was to die for. If youre in the area, check this place out.
I loved it here! Such a friendly environment. I wish I had taken the opportunity to snap more pictures because it was so clean, everybody was so kind and I was actually here for a meeting about suit fittings and they let me sit towards the back and have my measurements taken 😂 the shrimp and grits was to die for and I had more than just this one cup of the hot cocoa 😳 Ill be back to eat at this lovely spot as soon as I can. (ps: This experience was a few months ago. Just found the photos and have some free time to do lots of reviews to places Ive eaten over the course of a few months)
Oh my Goodness, we just had a dessert menu because we ate lunch somewhere else. But the dessert was fabulous, our server had the most wonderful attitude and suggested some great dessert. Apparently they have been making them by scratch sine the 80s and let me tell you. They have it down pack.
I have gone to Midtown twice and both experiences were excellent! I would like, especially, to mention the service. They are super fast and kind. I cant wait to go back!
I’ll start with the food was very good! BUT, we entered to be seated and they said it was a thirty minute wait. We were fine with that but I saw open tables outside so we asked if we could sit outside. The hostess at the time said yes that would be fine just order at the bakery. We did and waited for our food at a nearby outside table since it was supposed to be only ten minutes. We were then approached by a “hostess” that asked us if we were being served and we said that we were waiting on our food. There were multiple open tables and others eating to-go orders outside. She then told us we needed to move so she could set 1 person at a 4 person table. We then went in and got out food and sat at another table next to someone else eating a to-go order. That “hostess” then continued to stare at us eating and give us dirty looks. She was overall very rude and acted like we were below everyone else who was seated by a server. It wouldn’t have been a big deal if we weren’t told by someone to sit outside to eat.
First time here. Service was poor, food was not impressive. Ordered the southwestern omlette. Omelette was basically a pond of chorizo and nothing else. It came with pancakes. They had a funky flavour to them. I first thought it was the syrup but it was definitely the pancakes. Doubt i will try this place again. Also it was so cold i ate quickly to get out into the warmth.
They set us up at the restaurant with hors doeuvres, snacks, and drinks for a birthday party of about 30 overall. All of the food they made for the group was great. They made a really nice cake and also brought out slices of cake for the people with nut allergies. Wait staff was nice and very attentive for a party that had new people coming and going for 2 hours.Id recommend them for the food but definitely for hosting small events or catering.
I love the fact this place serves breakfast all day...they have amazing French toast. Of course all the deserts are wonderful, the main menu is good, however, it seems as tho all the entrees could be a bit more seasoned.
One of the best, if not the best, breakfast eateries in Winston-Salem. The Gluten-Free French Toast with Cinnamon Syrup feels like a GF cheat and the omelets are absolutely awesome! If youre treating yourself to a great breakfast or want to treat your guests to a delicious brunch, this is the place. Come hungry!
This place is awesome. It has some amazing breakfast plates & probably the best Pimento Cheese on the planet. Also when you go, make sure you get some dessert because there is literally a ron to choose from. I havent had the chance to try everything on the Menu so I am only giving them 3 stars but there is so much more this place has to offer.
This was one of my favorite places to dine. Theres a twenty minute wait for it be seated. I was given a glass of water while waiting forty five minutes before the server to return.I ordered meat loaf and mash potatoes with gravy and mac&cheese.I spent $16.00 on a meal that waswas the worst and most disgusted meal Ive had @ Midtown cafe.
I assume its a very well known place.. 25 min wait. Food was pretty good. Staff was good too.
We love Midtown Cafe. The food is great. We’ve never had a bad meal. The dessert portions are enormous, and the flavors are fantastic. The servers and staff are friendly, attentive, and very efficient.
Food was great but the staff could have been better. Our server was really slow and could not handle her work load. She kept apologizing for her being behind. One of her tables left before she took their order.
In a party of 7, most said their food was not hot (even grits and french fries.) Also, the desserts were very small. My key lime pie was melted like runny pudding all over the bottom of the take out container. The service was good but our waitress seemed very busy so we didnt want to bother her with our list of problems. Will probably choose a different place the next time we come to town.
Food was very good. I went with a very large group and the waiters were overwhelmed with so many diners at the same time. Therefore, I gave them a lot of leeway. Will eat there again.
Ive eaten here often over many years! Ive never been disappointed. Fabulous food, cooked to perfection. Midtown is constantly innovating, adding new and exciting dishes to their menu. All the desserts are still there, tasty as ever!
Had a wonderful lunch here yesterday. The shrimp tacos were excellent, and the macadamia nut carrot cake was superb. The service was excellent. Looking forward to coming back!
So many great things on their menu makes it difficult to choose! Excellent food!
My waitress Michelle gist was amazing bower the food to foreverrrrrr to come and it was cold…i think the breakfast might be good from the looks for it but the burger n fries gross and the mimosas not the best
Great mocha and pancakes. They just needed real maple syrup for them. It was thin and runny.
Weve been here 3 times & every time theres something wrong. Theyve brought out completely wrong orders, left out components of our orders. Today, my hashbrowns were cold & raw so I asked our waitress for another order of hashbrowns. I specifically said that they were cold & raw & asked that they be cooked on the griddle longer. She brought back a new order that was still raw, but she had microwaved them. Yeah, that didnt fix anything. I specifically asked that they be cooked on the griddle. She dropped them & ran so I wasnt able to mention that they were still raw. When she brought our ticket, it was clear that I had not touched either order of hashbrowns & I told her that I has asked for them to be cooked longer on the griddle & while they were hot, they were still raw. She said it was my fault for not ordering them well done. Seriously?!?! Never again. While the food is good once they finally get it right, good luck getting what you ordered. We will never be back & I certainly cannot recommend them to anyone.
Always a treat! Lunch specials are perfect size - for you to have dessert!!!
Enjoyed since months once every week the fish and chip dinner.Disappointing to get now smaller fish portions (6 bites and its gone) and lesser fries. The fish was tuff as well. This was now the second time.Guess I have to find another place.
Most delicious breakfast foods youll ever find.
Instead of going all the way to Maxie Bs, decided to check out local dessert place. My party bought five pieces of cake and a key lime pie. Sadly that and the pound cake were the only edible pieces. I choked down half the cheesecake, and we threw away the carrot, apple walnut, red velvet cake after one bite. A $40 lesson in desserts.
Best food for the price delicious and great staff and atmosphere
It was nothing like it was when I worked there when it was new in the mid 1990s...... I hate to post this but Im not going to lie and miss lead the public.
Great for the price/ the menu is huge and fun, but hasn’t changed seemingly in a decade (not an actual complaint). It’s a winner every time
Favorite place to go for brunch. And love that they have a Gluten Free menu so my daughter can have some choices. Desserts are delicious too!
Went today while visiting NC. Had a pickup order, with a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich and pancakes with extra syrup. Get back to the hotel, no syrup... now I have to go back and get syrup while my food gets cold, they took care of me with a free dessert and asked if I wanted the whole order re-done which I replied no. Got back to hotel room, gave my wife the syrup and opened my sandwich... no sausage. I give them a 5 star for customer service for giving me a refund but 1 star for attention to detail, hence the 3 stars. Check your order before you leave and youll be happier. Food was good and I would go back.Update, went there 2 days for breakfast after writing the previous review, both times the food was stellar and they got everything correct. Bought 2 half macadamia nut carrot cakes, one to share with the family here and one to take to our Ohio family.
Okay so this is my main place to have brunch. They have alot of great options. Their desserts are so good. I had to get a chocolate tart, a chocolate torte, and inside out tiramisu. Everything I try I love! You have to try the shrimp and grits, while you are at it get some mimosas! I recommended you get the bottle for $26!
Amazing food! I love it! I dont really like breakfast but me and my mom get their pancakes and other breakfast foods are great. I also love their lunch and the service is always the best. Then to put the cherry on top their dessert is to die for. But it is a little pricey so look it up before you go.
We frequent this place quite often. Never had an issue before.Anyway, we went in for a mommy/son date. I had my usual strawberry pancakes. They didn’t taste good today and I didn’t think anything of it because in all the years this is the first time I have ever had any issue. Well, the server (chris) took it upon himself to the let the manager (Jason, I think) know who just came out and spoke to me and had already made up a $10 giftcard.I thought it was very nice and thoughtful that they went the extra mile when they truly didn’t have to.It’s really hard to come by good customer service now a days and this just made my entire day.We always sing Midtown’s praises but even more so now!!!
Great restaurant, gluten-free tasty options, and they actually give you more than 2 slices of avocado when you order it as a side! The gf bread isnt the best, but the gf options outweigh that by far. This is our go-to breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurant!
Excellent 1st Timer experience!! Took my son to Midtown for Brunch🍳☕ on his 16th Birthday 🎂.. Everything was amAAzing from the minute we stepped in the door! 😁😲 The 2 beautiful Hostesses greeted us warmly, We had double the amount of service (Trainee was confident and without a doubt will make a killing working there😘). I had a mimosa🍹 and ordered my 2 Eggs Over Medium w/ Rye toast and my son had the French Toast breakfast. We cleaned our plates and proceeded out the door. But we both heard a beautiful melody🎵 It was an 🎼 Angelic Choir raining blissful music notes 🎶🎵😇 upon us as if the gates of heaven opened just for us.. The scent alone is embedded in my mind 🤣 No one needs directions to theDessertery 🍪 🍰🍮🍨🍞🍡 it was stocked full of freshly baked Scrumptious Cakes, Pies, Tarts n cookies. 🤤 Im gonna stop there! Get youre butts up to Midtown Cafe & Dessertery!!! Worth a few trips and deserves a special place in your Google map favorites!!
Absolutely delicious. Everyone loved what they ordered
An uninspired hot sticky mess. Breakfast was not good, oily potatoes and soggy hashbrowns. Pancakes are good. Nothing else was. Sticky tables, sweaty menus. Ugh. Service was friendly, but if youre looking for food this aint it.
Great for breakfast! Gluten free options, everything tasted great, and service was top notch.
Yummy food! Service was wonderful and was such a relaxing place to eat!
Service was really good, food came out quickly and was very filling. Overall a good experience and would definitely come again.
Great place to eat, have only had breakfast and lunch so far. Burgers are phenomenal!!!! Highly recommended! Wait staff is super friendly.
LOVED the French toast and the omelettes were delicious!
Thanks! ZACK your service was great fast & friendly
If could give a zero. We ordered online and got there before our order was suppose to be ready and the food was still cold. The fries were suppose to be spicy but had no seasoning. The veggie burger was something I couldve made at home for less with all the toppings I requested. It was not worth 13.00 plus bucks. My friend suggested this place, maybe I came on the wrong day.
My favorite brunch. Yummy French toast, quiche. Great takeout meals and outdoor seating.
Great little place to eat. Always very nice and courteous. Very clean as well. Extensive menu so everyone should be able to find something they like.
The service was awesome!!!!! The food was even more awesome!!!!! It speaks volumes of the management there. I highly recommend this restaurant if youre looking for great food and desserts as well as a great atmosphere of friendly service and staff!!! I recommend the pot roast...😋
Excellent brunch place! Good food and good service!
I always stop here headed to the NC mountains. On this trip my food was cold and my service was fast to seat but slow to serve. I know staffing might be a problem post COVID but things need to step up a bit because I LOVE this place before the closure/reopening.
Awesome slect menu great place for friends & Family and teammates !!!!
A Winston-Salem CLASSIC! Ive been going since they opened not too long after I was born; been with them thru the transfer of their flagship location from Thruway Center to Stratford Commons just down the road. Their food is down-South home cooking. Every dish is great, and their breakfast is served all day and PHENOMENAL. Used to come here at least once a week since I was a kid; the staff knew us by name and many of the waitresses were almost like family friends. The wait on Sundays (outside of a pandemic) is usually long, but usually service is pretty fast. The patio opens up during the summer and is so lovely. The mermaid statue and fountain is a landmark in the area, so definitely check it out when you are in the Winston-Salem area!
Great restaurant! Quick service and wonderful food
What can I say? You can have it all here - excellent breakfast lunch and dinner with dessert and coffee! Shara and Jeff always make it an awesome dining experience!
Best food in Winston ever!! Service is always great, food is amazing, and price isnt too bad.
Delicious!!! From the food to the staff, it was a wonderful experience! This was our first time coming here and my girlfriend and myself will be back! Highly recommend this place.
We’ve been here multiple times. Each time we get a different server and they all do an excellent job.
I love eating here. Family out for a nice breakfast. The food is delicious. Staff is very friendly, and courteous. Manager always come by and check with the patrons to make sure everything is ok. The wait time was a little long, but every one was seated, and served promptly.
My favorite restaurant in all of Winston-Salem for desserts and a great atmosphere! Food is delicious and such a great variety! Lasagna portions could be a little bigger lol. Meatloaf is awesome as well as thier fried chicken. Definitely some great comfort food and super great wait staff. Thier soups are extra delicious as well! The only thing that is so-so is the Mac and cheese, it sort of lacks the creaminess I like, but the kids absolutely love the Mac and cheese. They usually have a beautiful display of 10 or more desserts. One day a group of us ordered some Irish coffees and 7 of thier desserts to share. All were excellent! The red velvet was the winner 🏆 and everyones favorite so definitely plan to check it out if you go.
Excellent food and prices. The pancakes are amazing
Always great food and service!
Definitely one of the best places to get shrimp and grits from plus they add bacon food was sooo good along with a fruit tart
Awesome food and service. We be back again soon.
