5 stars because there isnt 10. Fred has been and continues to be the best place in the valley for quality smoked meat products! The challenge is to work your way through his offerings. With his daughter helping him out he has even more to offer. A great selection of cheeses, spaetzel, jellies and more. The best recommendation to start would be the lanjaeger. From there let your nose be your guide.

Authentic Swiss/German meats. This must be the best sausage and bacon you can buy this side of the Atlantic Ocean. And the prices are very reasonable.

The person on the phone told me not to buy when I called and they quoted me $80 (10 dollars a pound). They stated that it would be better to come in on the 23rd - Came in on the 23rd to find market price had gone up and now they wanted $140. My refrigerator cost less than that to operate, but I am sure they were aware that this time of year brings this kind of price and they were looking to cash in on demand. Unethical business practices - avoid at all cost.

Best Bratwurst Ive had. Some of the best Bacon around. Great Andouille and Italian sausages, Landjäger, etc. Fred is a master of the craft. They also have a selection of imported items: mustards, sauerkraut and the like.

* Update* I called in again, he was super apologetic. He remembered me calling. He explained his practices, (being a one man show and all) and invited me down to have a face to face conversation. Super old school, which I can respect. Seems like a nice enough guy when hes not super stressed, and incredibly knowledgeable.*Im a local farmer fairly new to the area. I had my pigs delivered to this place recently. I called in to place my cut order, and whoever answered the phone said they were busy. Understandable, its the holiday season. So I politely asked how I should place my cut order, or if there was an online form I could fill out, and all he did was repeat that they were busy, and then he promptly hung up on me without even an attempt to answer my question. No please call back later, nothing. He just hung up. Shortly after this my customers called me to complain about how rude and unhelpful they were as well. I can tell you, I will NEVER use this butcher again, and Im going to recommend the same to my friends. Rays may be equally busy, but at least they dont hang up on paying customers.

I never do reviews but this guy got under my skin. I Wanted pricing and they said:why dont you come in and read it yourself? (Whatever that means). I answered huh?, and he replied : have a good day and hung up. Very rude!

You wouldnt imagine that much happens inside of the humble building that is the Matterhorn Meat shop, but youd be wrong! This place is awesome! The owner, Fred (Alfred) is a friendly swiss man who must be in his 80s. He has a thick swiss accent, but that only makes sense considering the name of the store! During my discussion with Fred, I found out that he started working with meat in the mid 60s. He started the Matterhorn Meat Shop in 1975 and has been doing it ever since. He told me that he got into the business because he enjoyed doing it, not because of the money! I was excited to try a get a feel for the quality here, so I decided to trying a little bit of several items:Jerky ($16/95/lb): Very good. He keeps it frozen, but its been great once its thawed. Its a bit on the thicker side, but Id get some again. Jerky is always expensive, but this seemed pretty reasonable.Gothaer Zervelat - Its basically a german salami. Its an oblong shape and has a pretty good smoke flavor to it. If youre into salami, try some of this!Knockwurst - Im told that its the swiss version of a hot dog. Its good!Spicy Sausage - Good flavor (not too spicy), but the casing is a bit toughMild Sausage - Good flavor, but the casing is a bit toughLandjaeger - Its quite a bit different that the other ones that Ive had. Based on my experience here, I cant imagine that this is anything but 100% authentic. They are pretty big, but the flavor is mild and worth trying.Bring cash - Im not sure if he accepts credit cards or not. I think that his register is the same one that he had in 1975, which is awesome! My only regret is that I didnt discover the Matterhorn Meat Shop earlier. This is undoubtedly on its way to becoming one of my favorite shops around!
