I love everything about this place. The service is fast and friendly, the lattes are smooth and creamy, and the breakfast sandwiches are exceptional, mostly because theyre served on delicious freshly baked bread. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with high ceilings and two large glass garage doors that are usually open to create an open air feeling.
10/10The sandwiches are out of this world. It is no surprise that this place was recommended to us by quite a few people.Did not get a chance to try their baked goods, apart from the bread in sandwiches.Tried the Eat the east, their cumin sauce/curry is delicious. Definitely the crowning jewel of the place in my opinion. The avocado toast was splendid; we loved it.Their avocado sandwich was also quite good; I am not a fan of olives so it was not for me but definitely good. The only dish that disappointed me was their chickpeas and herb bowl but I did like their vinaigrette dressing.I definitely recommend going for breakfast over lunch.Absolute joy!
Yesterday (Monday) was yet another Monday morning spent trying to figure out a good place for lunch (many are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). Fortunately, I remembered August First! There was a long line, but it didn’t take long to place our order for 2 Vermonter sandwiches! As always, they were delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant and this sandwich!
Came here for brunch - really enjoyed the maple granola and coffee! However, I wish they would have put fruit in it instead of just granola with yogurt/milk, or make it a menu option as an add on! Great atmosphere
This was the first and last place we went to for meals during our week-long trip in Vermont. It set a high bar (that wasnt met elsewhere). The sandwiches are amazing, but the maple biscuits are divine. I bought 4 extra to take on the plane...
Great breakfast, great coffee, amazing bread, wonderful staff, and its located in super walkable downtown Burlington. The steady stream of customers attests to the quality. Theres really nothing more to say.
A perfect quick cafe breakfast. Several types of breakfast pastries and sandwiches are ready quickly, along with a good coffee selection. Outdoor seating and a no laptop rule so the seating comes available fairly quickly.
Wow the croissants, pastries and bread are outstanding, light years away from your standard breakfast fare. We lucked out finding this place on our first visit to Burlington, son was securing accommodation for his Masters at UVM. When we visit, it is an absolute given that we get breakfast at August First! My only slight criticism is that the savory scone (cheese, ham & scallion) has sugar in-its savory guys, please omit the sugar! My personal faves are the Hungarian roll, Maple biscuit and cinnamon raisin pasty.
Got a ham and cheese scone for our bike ride and it was so good! Great little spot to grab some snacks if doing a bike ride down along the water.
Came here on Sunday afternoon around 1pm - I hadnt eaten all day and I was cranky and starving. This place was a pleasant suprise. I expected a long wait for my food given that the line to order was out the door. My husband and I waited maybe 10-15 mins in line to order, but once we placed our order we got our food in under 5 minutes! This place really has their act together. They were more than happy to make substitutions. Cool atmosphere (albeit crowded) and great location close to the water. The sandwiches were creative and tasty (we both got the Vermonter). Definitely recommend this place and will come back here next time Im in Burlington!
Dear August First,Unreal turkey sandwich. However! Why are y’all afraid of pickles!!!?!?!? Get some pickles on your menu!! I need pickles on my sandwich and/or one on the side! Please :)
Best bread in Burlington. With that said a great sandwich starts out with the bread. If the bread isnt good the sandwich wont be either. Excellent menu and great tasting.
The olive bread is delicious, the breakfast sandwiches are amazing, the pastries are fantastic, the turkey sandwich with chutney is out of this world, and the salads are incredible!! Did I leave out any superlatives? I hope not! Wow!
Long line but moves fast. Eat the east was good but would get the biscuit sandwich or anything busicuit related next time. Chocolate chip cookie was great!
The aromas that come out of this place are unbelievable and the food is even better! The griddle biscuit truly took me to higher plane of existence and my husbands avocado toast was out of this world
The biscuits are to die for, we like to splurge on their buttery goodness for a special occasion now and then. The fresh bread and cookies are amazing, definitely give August First a try if youre in Burlington!
I cannot say enough good things about this place. We decided to go here on a recent trip to Burlington and it did not disappoint. Every item is fresh and well presented. A real nice find.
What a fabulous way to start off the day! We had the Day Maker, Eat the East, and the lemon ginger scone and every single item was fantastic. The ambiance was terrific, the staff extremely helpful, and just was an all around wonderful time! I would come back here anytime I am in town! If I could give it a higher review I would!
The baguette here is delicious and the BLT is definitely good, but I felt they didnt have too much variety to offer.
The maple roll and iced tea are amazing. Long line, but it went really fast. The good places are worth waiting for.
I go here way too often. The cinnamon raisin croissant is unbelievable. The espresso is so good.
Well managed bakery cafe with products that hold their own against the big name Bay Area operations.
I loved EVERYTHING about this place. We got lucky to come in on a weekday so got a full table for ourselves easily (I bet it gets extremely busy on weekends) and the weather was beautiful. The entire place has high ceilings and big windows and sun is pouring in. I could have lounged there all day. They opened the garage door and a nice breeze came in. I was so comfortable. And the food, sigh, the food. I had the quinoa bowl which is simple in essence but tasted so fresh and their lemony sauce made it extra yummy. My partner had an eggs and sausage skillet and loved it as well. We also got some bread and fresh scones out of the oven and these were perhaps the best scones I have ever tasted, and Ive tried a few in the UK.To top if off, it was affordable and the staff was very friendly. Burlington was just a stopover on the way home to Montreal and I would honestly come back here JUST for August First!
This restaurant is the perfect example of people wanting a restaurant to live up to the hype, so they overrate it, instead of just admitting that its really not that good.First they need a much system. Theres one entrance and you have people coming in and out to pick up their food, squeezing past the long line of people who are waiting to order. Then once you order, you have to constantly shuffle around while you wait for your food since there is no where to sit on a busy day as all the tables are already full.It took about 50 minutes from the time we got there until we got our food, which were just basic breakfast sandwiches. Two sandwiches and a small coffee was nearly $30.There was literally nothing special about the breakfast sandwich. It tasted like something I would make at home had a bought some premium bread at any chain grocery store, and had I done so, it would have cost about 5x less.
Great good. Best bread around. Definitely recommend this place.
First time checkin this place out and I was very pleased. The toasted egg & cheese sandwich was delicious along with the oatmeal raisin cookies & Blueberry muffin ( yum ). Everything was fresh and I enjoyed the coffee as well. Lots of seating inside and out. We put our order in and went out to sit and drink our coffee’s and not more then 5 minutes they called my name over the intercom to pick up my order.
Great food and a fun laid back atmosphere! The menu online isn’t the same as there, less choices then online.
The Vermonter was a very generous portion and the hot chocolate was surprisingly unsweetened, which is a good thing.
The Banh Mi… The bread was hard as a rock and it was also weak and soggy which made the whole sandwich fall apart. They added too many unnecessary spicy peppers which totally ruined the dish and made it almost unable to eat. The toppings were overboard and every time I picked up the sand which something fell out. Do not recommend. Very disappointed.
An excellent bakery and cafe — Burlington’s finest no doubt. 1st time here:Perfect baguette, the best mocha latte I’ve ever had, and the sandwiches were spot on. Can’t wait to try the pastries we got to take home! We will be back very soon!
Delicious sandwiches and lattes, and great atmosphere. One of the best breakfast spots in Burlington.
This was my go to breakfast and lunch spot. The Veggie and Tofu baguette was delicious. I also recommend the chickpea salad. Yum! Service is super friendly and the food is made fast. Did I mention they have baked goods.
Food was amazing. Their sandwiches were to die for. If you make it this way (people not from Vermont), I would suggest giving this place a try. It is a must
Always enjoy going there for a pastry and coffee. Really good food. Very laid back atmosphere. No laptops. Following all Covid protocol. Great baked goods.
Best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. The bread was fantastic!
Wow! Awesome vibe and even better food! We had the eat the east and the day maker sandwiches and they bother were fantastic! Great blend of flavors and the brioche was incredibly soft and tasty. Highly recommend!!!
Great food and coffee. Service friendly and knowledgeable.
I am so glad I found this place on Trip Advisor before coming to Burlington. It was the highlight of our vacation. The food was outstanding, especially the warm biscuit with the homemade raspberry jam! The grilled cheese was delicious, as well as the turkey sandwich I got. The chocolate croissant was so flaky and the chocolate melted in my mouth. The ice tea was very good too. We will forever talk about our delicious lunch here and if we make it back to Burlington in the future we will return!
Excellent food AND service. I appreciate the coloring pages for kiddos!
Top of the heap for local bakeries & eateries. Famous for the no laptop policy, which keeps the restaurant quiet and social (but quaintly antiquated given the popularity of cell phones!). Staff is friendly & fast, and the Maple Scones are like a Noir villian: seductive & deadly (to your diet!). Breakfast and lunch sandwiches, amazing breads and a good coffee selection are worth the visit. Great for tourists, business visitors and locals due to the downtown, walk-friendly location. One of my favorites! Very highly recommended!!
Went in for coffee and a biscuit and was upsold on the biscuit to include butter and jam which sounded really nice. I received my coffee within 5min and then waited an additional 25min for the biscuit. At this point I went up to the cashier asking for just a regular biscuit of which there were many on the counter. The cashier informed me that the food was taking 30min. If I would have known that adding jam and butter to a biscuit would delay my order by 30min then I would have just gotten a plain biscuit which is what I wanted in the first place. I waited outside and someone walked the biscuit to me and said “we bumped it up for you” so the additional 25min wait was actually, in their minds, rushed. Thank you for the favor of adding jam and “bumping me up” in line for a barely warm biscuit pictured below. Adding the jam was so worth the wait.....
The line was out the door, but the counter service was still outstanding. Thank you!
Awesome breakfast Sammies and salads!
My wife and I got sesame chicken bowls, which sounded great on the menu. Unfortunately every ingredient in the bowl was dry, tasteless, and cold. There was also no sesame in them, we just got a mediocre balsamic vinaigrette. The coffee and scone were good, otherwise it would have been a one star experience.
Outstanding food, best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had period, end of debate. Wish we had more days in Burlington just to go back here!. The muffins were excellent also, pleasent staff too.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect for a rainy day
Flipping delicious. Wound up here 3x on a short visit, the coffee and breakfast sandwiches were that good.
Best breakfast place you’re going to find in Burlington. Don’t waste your time going somewhere else. They’re kind, fast and the food is amazing. Last time I got a hot chocolate. Damn,...I’m glad they didn’t have cups any larger
Absolutely love this place! The design is very unique. It almost looks like it used to be an auto shop before they moved in. Their maple biscuits are amazing with their homemade jam and cabot butter. Their hot chocolate and cappuccino comes with plenty of foam, and their breads are amazingly fresh in the morning! Must try the chicken caprese sandwich!
The food was amazing and came out quick!!
I liked that they had plenty of outdoor seating. They were busy so there’s a wait to order and another wait to get your food. A bit unimpressed by their sandwich. $15 for a sandwich on a small baguette. The ingredients were fresh at least, I just wish the sandwich was bigger. They have one vegan sandwich on the menu. They accept cards at least. The bread was good at least, but I wouldn’t come back.
The pastries here are good (we got a pumpkin donut and a ginger lemon scone which were good) and the food is okay (the Day Breaker sandwich was pretty good and the grain bowl was average) but the iced chai latte was absolutely vile. I don’t know what was in it but it didn’t taste like chai or milk and I’ve had a lot of different chai lattes. I’m not often moved to write reviews but that chai was really terrible.
Nice place. Very nice pastries. The croissants and chocolate croissant are the best I tasted in the Burlington area so far. I havent tried the other savory specialties but I will soon!
Really great food, coffee and service.
5/5 stars for pastries, breads, and sandwiches. Absolutely delicious. Croissants are perfect and breakfast sandwiches are some of the best weve ever had.2/5 for drinks. Unfortunately have been consistently disappointed with their coffees and chais. Really not good. Recently had a chai latte that was extremely watery and did not taste like chai. Coffee is burnt/watery. Baristas are friendly and happy to remake/swap a drink. Will stick with the delicious food until we hear about a change in the drink lineup.
First time to Vermont and first establishment to eat at. I was delighted by the offerings, service and atmosphere! My daughter and I had breakfast grain bowls (very tasty and left me content), great cold and hot coffee (yum). We dined outside and everyone was adhering to the mask policy. I would visit again!
Fantastic food and the service is fast even with long lines. Would absolutely recommend.
Great bread and the maple biscuits are out of this world delicious.
Great Food! Very fresh!
The A Laptop Free Establishment is an elitist, hippie, ridiculous, out-of-date and snobby policy. Imagine how much longer people would sit and consume if they werent shamed for being technologically engaged, and instead forced to eat and rush out! Aside from that silly sign, which we simply ignored, they have great bread and sandwiches! Cookies for dessert are a must...
Favorite bakery in town - staff is always working hard in their hot little building! Coffee is good, iced latte especially. They have some MEAN croissants. Best sandwich they have is The Vermonter, you gotta try it
Burlington best bakery,We love the breakfast and the lunch menu,Nothing tops their bread !
This place has the most amazing breakfast sandwiches and baked goods. Hands down, the best egg/sausage sandwich ever. Their Eat the East sandwich is to die for. Definitely a most when visiting Burlington.
I bought a plain croissant here, then ate is as I walked through Burlington. Saw their Christmas market stand and instantly bought a Pain au Chocolat, as given the quality of the first item, I wasnt going to miss the chance to have an encore. Excellent, though on the cusp of too buttery.
Baguettes and food were on point, the beverages were a bit lackluster. While their Eat the East breakfast sandwich might seems a little expensive at $9, its well worth the price.
BLT on baguette-perfect
We had a very nice lunch. I had the Vermonter turkey sandwich. It might be the best turkey sandwich I have ever had.
I am from NJ and was visiting friends in VT. We stopped here for coffee and I am so happy we did. The coffee was great, the service was excellent, but what we really enjoyed were the VT biscuits. I’ve never heard of them but when I saw it I figured I’ll try it. My wife loved it and so did I. We loved them so much that we ordered 2 more for the way back home. Lol. Btw. We loved the no laptop policy. We will go back.
Really vibey cafe, very good pastries, friendly staff, a community gathering place. Food is decent but inconsistent. Hot drinks are ok, wish they were higher quality teas, coffees, and cocoa.
So good, so friendly. Do this place! I was here for breakfast and had pastries. Really glad I found it.
