Great selection and availability. But the staff must learn/be trained to make the first-time customer a life-long customer. They squeezed me out on my first visit by making me pay full price for a floor model, knowing that my son is liking it. I have an impression they assumed I know nothing about shopping in America and how stuff works. I will probably go again, but not as a happy customer.
I have bought instruments from tom downs from 1983 to present.he is very knowledgeable and honest.jim hauer built me a guitar out of parts I ordered and bought from his store.he did a wonderful job. I am happy with their selection and prices.they have great service too.i recommend them to be your first stop when shopping any instrument
This place has the best atmosphere, nice employees, and great instruments. I took lessons at a really fair price and would highly recommend it.
Came to buy a five string bass guitar. Outstanding selection, far better even than the local chain store had. Good assistance but not pushy. They gave me some good advice. Prices were very competitive. I made my purchase here. Great, classy store.
Ive been going to Hauer for years now. They have consistently been rude and condescending. However, I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt and be gracious with them. I enjoy supporting local business. Ive spent thousands of dollars at this store over the last decade. But nothing has changed. They are still rude and over priced. Theyve talked down to me about my instruments in an attempt to get me to buy their better instruments... ironically some of the instruments theyve talked badly about to me were ones I purchased at Hauer. Theyre stingy and dont like letting people test out their instruments. Theyd rather play it for you and brag about how good their stuff is compared to everyone else. They over price things. They offer buy 1 get 1 strings... but they charge twice as much for a pack of strings as other local shops and online retailers... so ultimately you are not getting a pack for free. Feels like a scam. Ive been a loyal customer for a decade but after my last visit I wont be returning. The women working there have all been kind. But the men seem cocky and grumpy every visit. They could be a great shop... but in my opinion they care too much about themselves and not enough about their customers. They really should consider changing the way they do business.
It blows my mind that stores like Trojan music in Troy have 5 stars and Hauer has 2.5. Hauer is the ONLY credible music store in the Miami Valley. They have everything and the others have toys for kids. I’ve shopped them all and usually leave empty handed. Hauer’s has what I need EVERY TiME! Pros shop at Hauer period.
10+ years as a customer and not a single bad experience. With knowledgeable staff and fair pricing it may be the only music store you ever need!
Great prices and great customer service .
I was looking at this place for lessons, but then the old man at the counter insulted me and my instrument in the same conversation. Unprompted, I might add. So, yeah, the one star reviews about this place are accurate according to my experience. I personally wont return, and I suggest you save yourself the frustration and go some place else.
Jim Hauer is a master at repairing acoustic guitars and other instruments I highly recommend hauer music store for anyone who needs a instrument worked on
Big selection on string instruments big store
Worst customer service Ive ever received from a music store. Ive been a loyal customer for years but after my last few visits I wont be returning. From my experience they never had good customer service. I tried to be considerate and continue supporting them. I just cant handle it anymore. I most likely wont be returning.
I went to Hauer Music a few months ago to buy my first drum set. They had exactly what I was looking for, while Guitar Center in town did not. I came close to buying the same set on Amazon but I was concerned about putting the drums together and tuning them for the first time by myself, so I wanted to go to an actual music store.Bill in the percussion section was awesome. He was very helpful and showed me everything they had that fit what I was looking for. Not only did he sell me the drum set I wanted, but he even tuned all of the toms, the bass drum and the snare drum for me to get me started. He even loaded everything up into my car for me.Im surprised about the complaints about the prices. From my perspective, Hauer Music charges about the same price as anyone else. My drum set was the same price that Amazon and Guitar Center was selling it for. Ive been in a few times since to buy some extra drum gear and the staff has always been very nice and helpful. I get treated better here than I do at Guitar Center. The only complaint I have is that I wish their selection was a bit better and they tend to focus on starter drum sets more than intermediate/advanced kits, but we are in a pandemic so I cant complain too much.
Service was polite and exceptionally informative. A pleasure to visit for a young lady just starting in band.
Did great with my instrument repairs and the service was fast and courteous Their prices are a little high on used equipment, but other than that theyre great
I have always received excellent customer service and instrument repair from Hauers Music..
Excellent musical instrument store. Ask for Cecil.
Incredible customer service; found the perfect guitar!!
Great place and thanks to Jim who helped to replace the broken string and fine tune to perfection. My daughter is happy with the violin.Happy Holidays
This is a beautiful place great customer service 🥰 friend just brought me here my first time and he got a banjitar, alot like a banjo with six strings played like a guitar !!
Went in today. I didnt realize they were there anymore. I saw the building on my left and I figured Id check it out. I walked in with my 2 sons and my nephew. I walked to the back and I saw the fenders. One in particular caught my fancy. It was an American Professionall II in sienna burst. I own 2 player series Fenders. They are ok,, but thats the guitar Ive been after. I stood there looking at it for awhile. They were busy. Finally Mr. Tom D. took it down and handed it to me. He answered a few questions about it for me. I bought it. I like that place. Ill be back.-Matt
Hauer music was a great experience, I was looking for my first guitar and the gentlemen that help me played each brand of guitar in my price range and helped me pick the best one for me.
The store was vastly better organized than other local music stores. They seem to have much better products and a knowledgable staff. Eric Hauer was very knowledgable and helped us find the right keyboard, stand and bench that we wanted to fill our home with music.
Hauer has great service and a good supply of things that musicians need.
The Hauer staff has been really friendly, helpful, and good to work with. Theyre knowledgeable about the band programs at different schools and promptly answered all of my questions. They ordered an instrument for us and promptly called when it arrived. Great selection of ukuleles in stock, too. Storefront is well-maintained and conveniently located. Theres always plenty of parking.
Just got made fun of by the guitar tech for wanting to spend $400 on a repair for my 79 Les Paul. I didnt ask him to tell me what it was worth, I asked him to fix it. Ill go pay more to have Mark Kaiser do it. He wont laugh at me for loving my instrument. And people wonder why no one shops with small businesses anymore.
Great people. ..fantastic repair dept.....wouldnt have anyone else work on our instruments!
I enjoy seeing Tom, hes a top notch guy at a top notch establishment ♥️
Went in for a simple guitar setup (restring, saddle adjustment) & the estimate came out to $75! Way overpriced for a simple setup, though it was professionally done. Owner was extremely condescending, short, and rude. I will not be back and will take my business to any other shop due to unreasonably high prices and rude owner/employees.
Awesome whats to help
Love the new store and knowledgeable sales staff. Special shout-out to their service department who replaced an internal brace on my Fender mandolin. Other area stores had told me the instrument was beyond repair...I took it to Hauer and in less than a week it was fully repaired and at a very reasonable price. Shouldve simply gone there first! Thanks for your workmanship, expediency, and customer service.
Just had my vintage ( 80 year old ) tenor sax overhauled and lacquered through Hauer and Tim. It took a while but it came back as a work of art and plays beautifully. I cant thank them enough. They know what they are doing.
So glad that they are now south of town! We visited the store a few weeks ago and there was a band practicing for a show. It was awesome to listen to while browsing the music books. They have such a huge selection of instruments as well as instruction books. We were approached by multiple people who worked there and engaged in friendly conversation. We purchased a Charles Walter piano years ago from Hauer and its been the best piano Ive ever owned. You definitely get what you pay for, and Hauer has quality! We come from a large musical family purchasing multiple pianos from uprights to grand pianos. Weve bought musical instruments, and always had great service! Definitely the go tomusic store for south Dayton and all around Ohio!
Great friendly workers and very lovely place to shop for anything you need
Excellent repair work! Brought in my trumpet which had not seen a shop in a decade; brought it home 2 weeks later good as new! Great job, reasonable prices and good service.
I used to know when they were in downtown Dayton 3 years ago. Prices are higher than online stores but staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They have a variety of instruments and accessories which helps figure out whats best for you. Sadly they didnt have one of the items I wanted to try out but I didnt leave empty handed.
Bought an older sax for kids band and it got a little messed up over the year. I needed it fixed and didnt want to travel too far from Cincinnati. The reviews of Hauer concerned me but my friend and his son (his sons the serious musician) said all their instruments went here and they did a great job. I took it in after school and it took a few weeks longer than expected but they did an incredible job and will happily drive there again if I need to
Great customer service
I have purchased many high end items from Hauer and I have always found them to be knowledgeable and reasonable. I have taken my guitars to other companies....never again! They screwed up my 12 string and didnt even bother repairing the item that I reported.
I found the staff very friendly and truthful. I was looking at drum gear and they did not try and sell me the most expensive gear. They also took the time to explain a lot stuff to me since I was a beginner.
I was gonna give them the benefit of the doubt, NOT this time! The service at the front desk is excellent, however, communication with the instructors has really taken a turn. We were trying to adjust our lesson schedule this past winter as a way to organize things for the new year, however my instructor told us that we couldn’t, as we would have to refer me to a new instructor. I was only gonna take two months off, it’s not like I couldn’t take online video lessons as a way to substitute my progress. On top of paying $200+ max each month for lessons, the instructors don’t even show up every week, and try to dictate when they want you to come in for lessons. We already have our own things we stress about. Manipulative instructors, incompetence at its finest. Disappointing.
I have been going here for a few years and everything has been good. I broke my alto I bought and needed to rent a one to finish the school year. I decided to call Hauer music because Kincaids had none for rent. When I called I asked the simple question to see if they had any for rent. The rude employee ignored my question and asked me many random ones not pertaining to it. Their website said they have many to rent at various levels of being new or not. Universities, high schools, middle schools, and everything in between are schools they rent to. I am an adult and the employee just wouldnt answer my question. Explaining We rent to only beginner players. I was unaware that performers at universities are beginners? Obviously the employee knew nothing about his own company. The website doesnt say anything about how long you have to rent an instrument, and says You can cancel at any time. They told me you can only rent for long periods of time. This was very frustrating and the employee told me Obviously the website has a typo. How lousy of a reply is that? They ask for your social security just to rent an instrument. Crazy. I am surprised at the terrible customer support I received at such a large music store. The amount of miss-information they portray on their website is astounding.
Went to find a student model cello. No luck, no advice, no offer to order one for me. Nothing. The sales guy in the strings acted like I was dumb for even looking for an inexpensive student model. Least expensive they had was $1700 - wow! I just got what I wanted online for $299. I would have liked to have spent that money local, but it seems like I wasnt the market Hauer wants to serve. *shrug*
Very helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, love the atmosphere!
Gary was kind enough to do a minor trombone repair while I waited, and he did great work. The store owner is very nice! I will keep coming back to this instrument repair place.
Very rude owner. Came to the store inquiring about a piano. The employee helping me didnt know the answer to some of my questions, so he brought me to the store owner, who was on the phone at the moment yelling at someone about a saxophone. I politely waited with the employee for 30 minutes. When he finally got off the phone, he was very condescending, rolled his eyes at me and sighed audibly, refused to answer my questions, asked me if I even knew how to play the piano, and then grumbled at his employee for not answering my questions (even though he himself never answered them either.) I walked out of there and took my business elsewhere.
A very nice place and business. I went there once to ask about a problem about my guitar and the guy there explained the problem and fixed it on the spot. I also went to get a mouthpiece and the guy there was very helpful on selecting a mouthpiece. He even let me try it out on a professional trumpet. He also went the distance of explain how I could get a scholarship for playing trumpet or horn. Overall, a very nice staff and place.
High prices, but friendly staff. We were helped by a nice lady who seemed to know what she was doing, but the price we paid for 2 reeds was what I will pay for a box of 10 reeds online. Wont be back.
I would much rather give my money to a ‘mom and pop’ shop but you have to draw the line. This review is from a drummers prospective: I got my 2nd drum set about 15-20 years ago and this was the first place I went to. They had the set for $3200 and Columbus Percussion had the same exact set for $2200. I’m currently looking for another set and I went to them to price it out. The price they gave me was just outrageous and I just can’t do that to myself or my finances. I went to Guitar Center and they offered me the same set for $2000 less! So I now have Guitar Center and Cymbal Fusion (a company in Texas) competing for my business. Hauer’s prices are just too high! And they are high on everything they sell. Maybe now they will have less overhead and will lower their prices but I doubt it. They do have a nice inventory though I have to say and the facility is very nice. As always, you should judge for yourself.
I miss the old location. Great staff. Wide selection of gear. Music makes the world go round.
We took my wifes violin in to have it restrung. They told us it would be done in 24 hours however, it took longer than promised. The staff was nice enough, they were very polite on the phone. But, the in store costumer service is lacking.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Especially for parents of new band students. Patiently answered all our questions. Will continue to shop there for our band needs. 😊
I personally dont understand why it has got a few bad reviews. Its a great place. Might be a little pricier than other places, but not by much. Quality of everything Ive bought has been good.
Simply an amazing staff of people dedicated to being the best music store they possibly can. We are fortunate to have Hauer in our area.
Excellent place and very friendly staff. Went in to buy some banjo strings and got two sets for the price of one. I used to go to Guitar Center to get banjo strings but I can get two packs for less than what Guitar Center would charge for one.Glad I found out about this place.
Professional and friendly staff, service is Great, Wide selection of quality instruments and accessories, lessons and instrument repairs available also.
If you are a brass player, make the trip to Hauer and ask for Gary. From anywhere in the Midwest. No one touches my trombones but Gary. He will make any brass instrument better than new.
Bill Hauer is so rude ! Ive been a customer there since 2011 and I was treat so poorly over the phone he continually talked over me accusing me of being a liar about not calling about payment arrangements . I spoketo Ashley approx 8 times in the last month. I had to hang up on himHes lucky hes got nice employees or his business would failI suggest to rent or buy from ANY ONE else !Dont give your hard earned money to a rude, overbearing, uncompassionate man .
Very nice people, drum teacher is Awesome
We wouldnt trust our daughters Yanagisawa alto and tenor Saxophones to anyone else when its time for regular maintenance or repairs.
Joe is the best Guitar teacher
