Great congregation. An extremely friendly crowd.
Recently refurbished, this beautiful, old world sanctuary now gleams. The exterior Greek revival architecture is imposing and beautiful. KKBE is the 2nd oldest synagogue in continuous use in the U.S. and birthplace of Reform Judaism. Tours are available by appt.
The post on the fence states there are tours M-F however when we came at the proper time the gates were locked. I called the office and the response was there no tours and we cannot come in to look. The post outside “has to be updated”. Poor excuse.
Rabbi Stephanie and everyone there on staff and in the congregation are so nice and a blessing. When I needed family and friendship they were all there for me. I miss Charleston and miss the wonderful people at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. I would highly recommend people go check it out. Great place for families, children and teens... all ages. Love it.
On the plus side, the synagogue, what we could see of it, was beautiful and interesting. On the not so plus side we were not greeted very warmly. In full disclosure we were late for the tour on a Friday afternoon and the synagogue was closing in about 20 -30 minutes. Shabbat was still a few hours away. We were greeted a bit abruptly but told we could walk inside the museum and gift shop. We asked if we could just peek inside the sanctuary and were told no. When we asked again we were sarcastically told we could try it but the woman knew it was locked. We were walking through the museum, as invited, and then suddenly the same women, now all warm and welcoming, suggested that we save some time to see the gift shop. Apparently it was okay if we were there as long as we were going to spend money. We know the historical significance of the synagogue and were doing our best to see it during a very short visit. A little warmth and welcoming would have been appreciated, even if we couldnt take the full tour. Instead it left a bad taste in our mouths.
I started attending here when I first moved to Charleston, nearly seven and a half years ago. The community has always been warm, welcoming, and egalitarian. This is a second home to me, with beautiful music lead by beautiful people (Robin is one of my favorite people ever), a wonderful building, and a wonderful spirit.
This is a historic synagogue, and very beautifully designed in a greek revival colonial style. The same architect who designed this also designed the similar looking Catholic Church across the street. I will give this a 5 star to visit in the winter, but only a 3 star to visit in the summer. It is simply too hot to walk though and sit on a tour, since they did not turn the air conditioning on the week in August 2017 when we visited. We were too uncomfortable. I would skip it in the summer unless you like hot and humid indoor destinations.
I want to personally thank Anita for the wonderful tour she gave to my wife and I. Our research for my Jewish ancestry was greatly enhanced and rewarded by our visit to KKBE and Coming Cemetery. Truly one of the highlights of our visit to Charleston...if not the Glowing #1 Highlight(with a capital H!) Ah Groisen Dank!
Went to the Nosh festival and had a wonderful time. And the gift shop inside was great also.
Our guide, )Linda, was very knowledgeable and made our visit very rewarding.
We received a wonderful tour of the synagogue and history of Charleston. The synagogue is the first Reformed Jewish Synagogue. The story of how that came to pass is quite interesting. The organization is among the five oldest synagogues in the US. There is a museum and a Judacia store. Definitely worth seeing!
My wife and I were in Charleston for a few days and visited due to recommendations, as well as a general interest in the Jewish community of the region. The building itself was impressive and they did a great job with the tour. It should be a stop for anyone visiting town!
Wonderful home of worship. Lovely tour - the guide was very knowledgeable and knew quite a bit of history. She had a fantastic cat bag. The gift shop had a wide selection of candle holders and mahjong themed presents.
We are still looking for our reform congregation. They were doing a tot Shabbat so I think some of the younger people were busy. Would have liked a more musical service with more instruments and a more diverse group. We kept asking for people to show us the building and tell us some history and nobody seemed interested in doing so.
Visiting Charleston South Carolina we were very well exepted and welcome in KKBE. very nice synagogue.
One of the most beautifully restored synagogues in the country and we are blessed to have it right here in our own town. It is often overlooked when people visit Charleston but if you have a chance, it is a great place to tour and see some remarkable preservation!
Loved the history lesson. Worth the time. Go.
Fabulous Sisterhood event. Warm and friendly!
Music Director enriches the liturgy of this historic synagogue.
The tour guide, Sandra, was great. She knew the history of both the shul and the town. The place needs some TLC but has a great gift shop. I hope that helps with fundraising.
It is a beautiful historic house of worship. So happy to see it still vibrant and lively.
Great historic site. Oldest operable synagogue in the US.
Important historic synagogue. Great docent tour.
Wonderful tour. And an amazing gift shop!
Sam,Not for nothing, but you are a putz. Pay attention and dont be self centered. Attend Shabbos services.
Me and my wife are visiting Charleston as a potential place we would like to retire Arrived 20 minutes late for last tour (Tours are at 1 and 2 and we thought there was also a 3:00 PM tour). Asked the lady at the gift shop if we could take a quick look at the sanctuary as we told her we were leaving tomorrow and would not be able to come back. She refused to let us view the sanctuary. If we do decide to move to Charleston or know of anyone else thinking about moving there we would warn them to stay clear of joinging this temple. Not one ounce of warmness or hospitality. Such a shame as we had a beautiful tour of the downtown Savannah temple a couple days ago.Sam HeimanMember, Board of TrusteesUnited Hebrew CongregationSt. Louis, Missouri
A very spiritual place to be, for a memorable event like Bar Mitzvah.
Great venue for Piccolo Spoleto chamber music.
A must for Jewish (and not so jewish) visitors!
Very fun historic tour with a nice staff. They are very knowledgeable about the history of the building and the jewish community of charleston.
