Dennis(the manager), and Mark were extremely helpful and professional. Very knowledgeable in fixing the issues with my wife’s car. There were these two younger guys in the lobby( I asked who they were and they said they were from corporate) but they didn’t seem to be very knowledgeable or very polite to the other workers as they talked over them and didn’t let them finish a statement. Dennis and Mark were very sweet and provided great customer service. Told me the codes to my car and what those actually meant, really helped to break down in terms I could understand, Cars are like German to me so it really helped that they broke it down and explained it for me . Would always recommend them for any transmission work

I took my 18-yr old VW Jetta to Aamco after being told by a mechanic Id need a new transmission. Transmission specialist - Dennis Engle - at Aamco checked my thoroughly & extensively for over three hours, then told me: Your transmissions fine! (He suggested possible other more minor sources of low-grade noise the car was making). Dennis is not only very knowledgeable; hes completely honest, didnt try to sell me anything I didnt need. In the end, the charge for all his work was as reasonable as it gets. Id go back there tomorrow and will recommend this Charlottesville Aamco (on Emmet St) to all my friends.

I had been told by Reynolds Cadillac dealership in Orange that my transmission lines had a leak. I wanted a second opinion so I searched google to see where I should take it. Due to the great reviews on google about AAMCO I called them and spoke to Dennis who was very nice and told me he would have to check it. So I had it towed in and 1 day later Dennis called me to say my vehicle did not have a transmission leak and it was very clean. He also was so kind not to charge me anything for his and technicians time and work. Dennis thank you so much for saving me hundreds of dollars. Reynolds had quoted me 595.00 to fix something that wasnt even there. I thank God I calked AAMCO and spoke with Dennis. In time of need on my vehicle I will always go to Dennis at AAMCO. I will also tell my neighbors and friends as well.

Great customer service at this place. I brought my Jeep in for an oil change. It took a day longer than expected due to some of the mechanics being sick, and Dennis completed the job on the house for me the next day. Would go again.

The owner Jack runs a very good shop. Dennis found me a very good used transmission for a great deal that even comes with a 90 day warranty. Tyler was very cordial and professional and even gave me a ride home so I didnt have to wait for one. Highly recommend if you need transmission work done.

Do not take your vehicle to this location. Staff admits they were short staffed and it took a month to get our car repaired. The original quote was 2650 and the final cost was 3700+. These repair shops have got to stop milking customers. We will not return to this location or recommend to others.

Our daughter had her car towed to this shop when the car wouldn’t shift into forward drive. She brought it in on a Saturday and left a message requesting that the shop run diagnostics and give her an estimate for repair. After she followed up with three phone calls that week, the shop staff told her on Friday that the car’s transmission needed replacing, with an estimate of $5000 for a new one, or $3000-4000 for a refurbished one. She thanked them for the estimate and told them she’d get back to them with further guidance.She called back later that day and told a staff member that she would pay the diagnostics fee and would be getting a towing service to take the car away. Soon after she hung up, the staff member called her to explain other options she might have to get the car’s transmission repaired, in the $2000-3000 range. Our daughter declined and confirmed that she would pay only for diagnostics and that she was getting a tow scheduled.She paid the shop’s fee (labor, parts, service, and taxes) and had the car towed to another local shop. She promptly received a diagnosis from this other shop – the shifter cable bushings were broken and needed replacement. This other local shop did the repair for just over $200 for parts and labor. The car has run fine ever since.I called the shop and asked to speak with the owner. The shop employee was hesitant to refer my call, saying he could help address the issue. I explained my general complaint (a $5000 quote from their shop for what amounted to a minor repair job) and said I only had confidence in speaking with the owner.The owner called me back soon afterward and I explained our daughter’s experience in detail. He listened patiently and said he would investigate the issue and get back to me. At the time (Friday afternoon), he was unable to find the diagnostic sheet, which he said could shed some light on the issue. He did agree that it sounded like a serious mistake, and promised to investigate and call me back.The owner did call me back on Monday and apologized for the mis-diagnosis. He offered to refund the full cost of AAMCO’s charges, and did so soon afterward. He said that while this was a highly unusual mistake, mistakes of this type do happen. I thanked him for his explanation and stated my primary concern was that such a serious mistake/overcharge not occur to another customer in the future. He said that couldn’t be guaranteed, but assured me that he ran an honest shop that made an unfortunate mistake. He said he would go over the situation with the technician.I called the owner one final time a few days later to thank him for the check. While I was unable to reach him, his staff member asked whether I had checked with the subsequent shop to see if they had done a full diagnosis on the car, insinuating that perhaps the second shop just did a quick fix.I did, in fact, check with the second shop and had a lengthy conversation with its owner. He said our daughter’s issue was a pretty straightforward fix (simpler is usually better), and that I’d be surprised how many second opinions he’s given that were much cheaper and more straightforward than the prior diagnosis/estimate would suggest.I did very much appreciate the AAMCO owner’s responsiveness, understanding, and his willingness to promptly refund our daughter’s costs. However, I don’t have confidence in his staff members’ aptitude or intentions.

This place went above and beyond to help me with my car issue with costing me way below what I expected to pay. We were helped by Tyler and he went out of his way to get our vehicle looked at, I expected to be without my car for at least a week due to the full lot. To my surprise it was finished in under 2 days after drop off. They are honest people, and the new mechanic saved me upwards of $2k, because he found out the exact problem with my transfer case issue. Dealerships would have told me I needed a complete replacement($2800~), but the mechanic diagnosed it to the T. My final bill was beyond surprisingly cheap.I recommend anyone that needs work done to go to this establishment. You will not be disappointed. They are honest and actual people, they are kind and will look out for you.P.S. - Thanks for the ride to the car rental place Tyler, that wasn’t even part of your job and you went out of your way to help.

Wow! Truly one of the best experiences Ive ever had at a transmission/automotive business. Mr. Dennis is extremely knowledgeable, but most importantly, hes fair. I cant speak for all companies or locations but Aamco at Barracks/Emmett St. & Mr. Dennis and Mr. Tyler will be looking at and doing work on all cars for me in the future. I saved time, and money. This shop gives better deals than others Ive found (let me save you some time Ive researched about 5-7 shops). Its almost a no brainer to come here. I hope Ive saved someone time, its definitely stressful getting work done so many shops have bad stigmas- this shop isnt one of them. This Aamco cares about its customers, and it shows.

Dennis and the guys at AAMCO we’re great. I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado with 250k. Had a light come on and transmission went into limp mode. I do almost all work myself but realized this might be more then I could handle. Called Dennis and after a few minutes on the phone felt very comfortable taking the truck to them. Made room for me within an hour. Called shortly after and gave me a rundown on repair. Turned out I needed to replace transmission. Had job done in four days as specified and also had me in shop to see all the damage to old transmission. Side note, one week after I was heading out of town for a long road trip. Called in to shop to see if Dennis could take me in quick just to make sure all was good. Didn’t hesitate, had me stop, lift ready and all was good and I was on the road with no issues. Can’t say enough about there strong work. Highly recommend.

Brought my car back five times over two months after paying to have my transmission rebuilt. I rate them as two stars instead of one as they did finally replace the transmission entirely which has the car working properly. But I did need to contact corporate to get this resolution. They offered no refund or discount, which I would have expected.

I wont take my car anywhere else. I trust the staff at AAMCO like family friends. They are friendly, polite, and enjoyable to talk to. Ive been in 3 times over the course of the past 2 years and was not charged 2/3 times. The other time they replaced a piece in the engine quickly, efficiently, and at a reasonable cost.This morning I dropped off my car with a large plastic piece hanging down from the under-belly of the car. Because it was a quick and relatively easy fix, they did not charge me at all. I really appreciate the time they spend to take good care of and get to know the customers. I would recommend AAMCO to other college students or anyone else I know.

This a very good place to take your vehicle if you want an honest opinion. My Impala transmission was slipping and they diagnosed it and gave me some good options to consider. They did this without charging me a penny. Dennis and the other folks at Aamco Charlottesville are honest and seem willing to help.

Courteous, timely, and thoughtful service. I had a very positive experience at this AAMCO - brought in a car that had a sticky transmission moment at a stop sign. I needed to know if there was any immediate problem that was developing - or if it was just a one-off. They did a complimentary checkup within a couple of hours, including driving it around to see if they could reproduce the issue. They returned it with a clean bill of health, and indeed, the car has been running great ever since. I was impressed and remain grateful!

I went to AAMCO in Charlottesville Va. and it was a great experience! i stopped by one day to ask about having them check my transmission and the manager said sure just bring it by. So i brought it by 2 days later and he said they would check the transmission. I was having some noises coming from the transmission. The manager said he would let me know by phone what they found. Turns out it needed some serious work possibly the torq converter, he said they would have to get into the transmission to really see what was happening, diagnostics testing said something was wrong. i went by to pick up the vehicle and would have to figure what to do next, when i picked it up the manager came out with my key, i asked how to pay and he said not to worry about it, i was impressed by that! considering we are going through the COVID-19! i was so surprised! its people like this through times like this that makes america awesome! i will definitely go back to them for anything! Excellent customer service and super helpful. I commute to UVA from Richmond everyday and this afternoon, I noticed the plastic plate under the front part of my car (not too sure what it is called) was loose and dragging on the ground. I came in and explained my issue to the manager and he told me it was a resolvable one and they began working on it immediately. They were able to put it back in place and secured it in very little time. Spoke with the manager and expected to pay a small fee, but he did not charge me for the fix. I was so happy and impressed with their quick service. They were so nice to talk to.

Never having been to AAMCO before I was very pleasantly surprised by how professional, expert and thorough their service was. After being told by a reputable car repair company north of Cville I needed a new transmission for my 05 Honda pilot ($6,000) I took my car to AAMCO for a second opinion. They drove my car and put it up on the lift twice. Their finding - the exhaust system was missing 2 screws. They replaced them at no charge. I love these guys and will definitely come back next time I need a tune up or any other service. They are a great resource!!around

I am a college student who knows nothing about cars. My thermostat and gasket needed to be replaced. After explaining this to me, Dennis took great care handling my situation in a timely manner. The location of the shop is convenient since its close to Grounds and is right across the way from Barracks where I went to chill and wait for my vehicle to be serviced. Had to have my 99 accord towed after my clutch went out after 160,000 miles. Originally, I thought it was a problem with the clutch master cylinder, but they diagnosed it as the clutch itself pretty quickly. AAMCO had me in and out in record time, great customer service, explained everything to me about what had to be done and quoted me a pretty good price for a clutch job. They even let me see the old clutch after they finished, (Im a bit of a car nerd). Highly recommend to everyone, students especially, they are really conveniently located near Barracks road shopping center and they are very good at answering all questions and making sure you have a good experience. Took my car in for an engine light check. They were efficient and courteous, and took no charge. Turns out it was a minor issue that they recommended to take elsewhere.Experience going in the second time for another engine light check was just as positive. They were quick and professional.

The staff here are really kind and friendly. If nothing is wrong with your car, they wont charge you for the check. If something is wrong with your car, they let you know in a time-appropriate manner before they start any repair. Great service.

Needed transmission work took my car to AAMCO and they exceeded my expectations and went above and beyond to make it happen.

Went to this place because of the name...mistake. I asked for one thing got another. The vehicle seemed in worse shape after the rebuilt, refused to shift and leaked tranny fluid in the garage, which I had to clean up! They (as if they were doing me a favor) towed the vehicle back in but refused to provide me transportation. I truly believe they figured an out of state person-- lets charge whatever we want regardless of the work performed. When speaking with the individuals in the office, they seemed unaware that a woman would know or understand the automotive repair industry, so their explanations didnt wash with me. Not sure we got what we paid for. If youre traveling through the area ask locals for a reputable repair facility, dont rely on the nationwide name. The locals I was visiting were appalled at the way we were treated. Oh and make sure they spell your name correctly on the work order, even after you spell it for them.

Tom at AAMCO on Emmett St. took great care of my car. I brought my Lexus in and he and the AAMCO team were able to run a free check to investigate why my engine light was on! He completed the task, in which usually you have to wait hours in line for, in 25 minutes. I left very impressed with his customer care and auto service. If I have any other car problem, Tom and AAMCO will be my first contact!

They have repaired the transmissions of four of our cars. They have always done honest work for an honest price. From the big truck to the small car, they have always been fair and the work is top notch.

After being without my 4x4 for over a year because of transmission problems, I gave Dennis a call at AAMCO. They not only came and picked up my truck, they had the transmission rebuilt and returned the truck to me in a week, at below what I had expected to pay. I have nothing but good things to say about the guys at Aamco, They have fixed up my car and my wifes car multiple times. Every time I have it in they are super friendly and they have been great about honoring warranty work. I have the lifetime warranty on my car and they have never given me any trouble getting any issues fixed. They even tracked down all my old checkup receipts for me! They are my go to shop and have definitely earned my trust.

I got my car done when they said that it would be done and that was awesome. But be sure to check for King nuts and cotter pins after theyre finished. I dont have any complaints Im sure they go through a lot of transmissions in a lot of work and there are bound to be some pieces left off accidentally. But I went to another Aamco near where I live and it was taken care of professionally and properly

Awesome service! My vehicle has been having this white smoke coming out of the tailpipe for some unknown reason. I took it up to AAMCO and they ran a diagnostic within 30 minutes and told me what they believed to be the issue. They checked my oil, and without asking they gave me two quartz and corrected the mistake Pepboyz made with my oil filter. They were polite as can be, and provided an overall satisfactory experience.

I came in to take advantage of the Free Check Engine Light offer on my Subaru Forester. I was in & out within 10 mins; the problem was fixed and it didnt cost me a dime! Dennis and Jack were very helpful and informative.

The day I was supposed to drive eight hours home from UVA a light came on in my car, so I took it straight to AAMCO. They made my car a priority and started working on it immediately. Everyone was super nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend visiting AAMCO with any car troubles!

Dont believe these ratings, thats how I chose this company to repair my vehicle. When telling people about my experience i have gotten negative responses saying they would have told me advance that this company is not honest. I had my car towed there to get my transmission fixed. Tom lied about several different things. He tried to cheat me on my receipt thinking I would not notice then when I brought it to his attention, he lied saying he was trying to save me money. When the way he had the receipt drawn up cost me more money. They would not answer my questions about the transmission and where it was purchased after Ive paid them 2100 dollars. He told me that I would have a 90 day warranty with the transmission from where he purchased it and a year warranty through his shop to get my businesses. Then he wrote something different on the receipt and rushed me to sign the incorrect receipt. My engine light was on when I left. No one ever mentioned that there was another repair needed as to why my engine light was on. Do not trust these people they are a bunch of liers.

Had a breakdown on a road trip and needed to have a seized AC compressor replaced. Staff was very nice and helpful. They prioritized our repair so we could get back on the road.

I had my car fixed at this shop and, honestly, it has been the best experience I have had with a mechanic shop. I was treated very nicely and given step by step walkthrough of what my car had. Also, I was given my car back 2 days before it was schedule. I would recommend this shop to anyone that needs repairs from an honest shop.

Jack at AAMCO was topnotch, measured in his diagnostic approach. with my son away at school in c-ville we thought we might need a transmission replacement. Jack walked me through the potential options but stressed that they needed to check it over first. when they found out it was most likely an engine issue in full disclosure told me that if the ultimate issue was beyond their specialty then they would recommend sending it elsewhere. turned out to be less than a $300 repair instead of many thousands of dollars. Jack and his staff were courteous and honest through and through. Much appreciated when feeling a bit helpless from another state.

I took my 2003 Chev Avalanche with what I was quite sure was a dying transmission. The guys checked the vehicle and found a simple, simple issue that I can fix myself. They did not recommend changing trans. fluid/filter nor any other maintenance. This was all done for free and on time. I have worked on all of my vehicles since I was a teen including rebuilds of engines and more major repairs.If they had told me there was metal in the trans fluid I would have had a new Trany put in no questions as my truck has 180K miles.The honesty of this group is to be highly commended, particularly in this day and age where managers of other repair shops are given bonuses such as free vacations for increasing the bottom line.I greatly appreciate the honesty of this group of pros and would recommend them to anyone.PS: When I hit 400K and need a new trany they will put it in !!

I had driven my Grand Cherokee, 2 wheel drive, from Texas to Virginia due to a family emergency. The automatic transmission developed a problem. I called these guys. Long story short, $3,000 dollars later, the transmission was still leaking. I called these people because they are supposed to be the best. Life is so sad when a person finds out that there is no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny.

Went in expecting to pay over $500 for a new starter but when I went to get my car I was told it was just a bad circuit and didn’t pay a penny. Best service I’ve had in cville and will definitely be seeing them again.

Outstanding service and commitment to finding and diagnosing the problem. My daughter and I took her 12 year old car into AAMCO Charlottesville when another auto repair place had indicated the problem was a transmission problem. Since my daughter was home on spring break we had only a limited time to try and diagnose the problem and get it fixed. The professionals at AAMCO worked us in for no charge and worked several hours using multiple diagnostic tests to find the problem. In the end it was a wheel bearing. Unfortunately they couldnt get us in before my daughter had to be back at school. They insisted on keeping to their no charge commitment and we picked up the car and my daughter got it fixed at her school location.

These guys Mr Jack as well as Mr Dennis are my go to guys. The staff is very friendly and helpful they always have solutions to my auto problems. So they venture outside of their specialty work and thats what attracts me to keep coming back. Thanks Jack and Dennis.

This Amco (I worked with Tom specifically) is the best. As a general I hate mechanics, but Tom will stand by his work and the work of the shop. He will not let a vehicle leave unless it is up to par. I have taken my Trailblazer in three, and have recommended *this* Amco to several people who have older vehicles that need a lot of work. I have had my Trailblazer since 2006, and I have often been stuck with huge bills of things that needed fixed. All three times I have worked with Tom, I have been extremely pleased with the total bill, the work done, the customer service, and the speed that my Trailblazer was finished. Top notch customer service (regular phone calls with updates, no surprise we fixed all this for you and your bill is over $1000), top notch work. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Went in to get a clunk in the back of my car checked out asked them to check the drive train bushings as well as the transmission. They said it must be the transmission and said rebuild it for 2k. It was a bushing, another mechanic thought the bushing was the issue when doing inspection and did the differential bushing which fixed the issue. This was still expensive but around 800 vs 2000 and the 2000 wouldnt have fixed the issue. My window broke during troubleshooting and they didnt tell me just taped it up with clear tape so it was hard to notice. It fell down a week later. They did not properly get the window back up before taping it up and damaged my door seal and them not telling me could have been a big issue if I was going on a trip.

My son needed transmission work done on his 98 Ford Contour. (I know... shocking!) I called several shops in town and in the valley. AAMCO did it for less and provided a 12 month guarantee.They finished the job when they said they would and for the price they quoted me at. I would recommend them to anyone for transmissions or any other mechanical issues. dtb

I had an appointment at AAMCO to fix the light of my car, and they even recorded it. I scheduled my time for it. When I arrived, they told me that they dont do such a thing. Cant those people tell me in advace in stead of wasting my time?!

If you have a transmission problem I would like to suggest to any one of you, do not have your transmission repair at 1134 Emmet St N in Charlottesville Virginia.The reason for this the owner and the staff do not know how to rebuilt a transmission also do not know how to order the right part to do the job. My son got is transmission repair at that place it took almost four weeks and driving back home the transmission fail unable to go backward or forward he had is car towed to another ammco franchise in Frederickburg Virginia.The owner from that franchise found out the transmission repair did not have been done properly also they not put the proper parts in the transmission.You may see some reviews in regard of that location think twice. There is a excellent transmission repair shop in Virginia it is located on Jefferson Hwy route 3 in Frederickburg Virginia the name is TransAm transmission,The owner of that place Jim, know is stuff also after 30 years in the same place you can drive out of that place. I did have my transmission repair at that location 28 years ago and still driving my car with no problem. Do not take the smooth words of the staff in Charlotteville Va for repair after they get you wallet open this is more important for them to take you for a ride at the bank.I stand being my story it happen to my son vehicule this years in 2018 early spring.

My car was held twice for a month each time due to a failure to either order the right parts or to order parts at all. The second time resulted in an unecessary $1,500 in car rental (insurance only covers the time needed for the repair:a week to 10 business days).Moreover, prior to start the job on my car, the repair time estimate given was a week. And no follow up was done to let me know that the parts were still not in and my car would be held for 4 times the estimated repair time.From my point of view, this location is unprofessional and has a very poor customer service. It was a very disappointing experience.

Aamco Charlottesville did a great job on my car. The service was quick. I had little hassle and the price came in at exactly what was quoted. I highly recommend these guys. Charlottesville is fortunate to have such an honest business in their town. Jack and Dennis are true professionals.

We have now had two very positive experiences with Dennis and the other folks at the Charlottesville AAMCO. Our initial visit was to have a transmission completely rebuilt. The service we received was professional and included a courtesy follow-up check after 300-400 miles to make sure the transmission was properly adjusted and wasnt leaking. In the interim, the car began vibrating and became so serious after a few days, that I went back to AAMCO to have the problem checked. They immediately began to investigate with a test drive and determined that the transmission was fine, but a rear wheel was dangerously close to falling off the axle due to missing and loose lug nuts. Although the wheel problem was not something that resulted from AAMCOs work, Dennis very kindly special ordered a replacement lug nut, checked all the remaining lug nuts to assure that they were properly tightened and completed the repairs (at no charge!) late in the afternoon of New Years Eve! Job well done! Thanks for all your kindness and help under stressful circumstances.

My car had been having some shifting issues and I was pretty sure that it was just slipping past first gear and not engaging until I had enough RPM to move straight into second and so I took my car into the shop. Since AAMCO is the only transmission repair place in Charlottesville I didnt have many options, but I was surprised by how helpful and friendly the staff was in assessing the problems my car was having. They took a look at the transmission (for free I might add) and diagnosed it as an internal problem based on their analysis and my description of the issue.Since the repair would cost more than I had on me I at first asked about financing options and Dennis was more than gracious enough to connect me with their financing bank in order to get the repair I needed as well as the number for enterprise so I could get a rental car during the duration of the repair. When I asked about possibly selling my car either to them, or to a dealer, they connected me with the local Mazda dealership (I had a 98 Protégé) and I was able to speak with a dealer that day in regards to my trade in options.After mulling my options over, I ended up deciding to cancel the repairs and just trade the car in as I was going to sell my current vehicle in a few months anyway and didnt want to be on the hook for the repair it would need to get me there. Just wouldnt have been financially reasonable.Since I did not end up getting the actual repair, I cannot speak to the quality of their work, but based solely on their demeanor and how they treat their customers, I give them five stars as that is often the most crucial aspect of a repair shop. If they cant be honest with you or give you an estimate within a reasonable timeframe/amount of labor, then they probably cant be trusted with actually working on your vehicle. Now that I have a new car, I wouldnt hesitate to take it their for any general maintenance or transmission issues that might pop up while living in the area. Never hesitate to ask them questions as they are just a friendly group of people!
