Last year after his passing, I inherited my brother in laws 1974 Guild F50 which was unfortunately in very poor condition. I contacted the current Guild Guitars company in California to inquire as to whether or not they offered restoration work on Guild instruments. They said they did not, but highly recommended Third Coast Guitar and Amp Repair in Chicago. I now know why.I then contacted Third Coast owner Chris Eudy and learned that he is a Guild enthusiast. He said they were very busy at the shop, but could indeed do a complete restoration. The F50 needed a proper neck reset (had to sort a previous botched neck reset) and refret, a new bridge and bridge plate, new bone nut and saddle, new pickguard, the head block replaced (not headstock) and because of the state of the finish, I decided to have the instrument refinished (which I typically would not do) but I felt as though this guitar deserved a new lease on life. I should also mention, that even in its almost unplayable state, I could tell this top of the line Guild jumbo flattop had an amazing voice. The ultra talented Third Coast luthier that performed this complete restoration is Zach Duran. Thanks to Zach, the guitar is now a time capsule - a 1974 Guitar that looks and sounds like a new guitar, only better. The playability, intonation and voice of this instrument is incredible. If Third Coast can bring a guitar like this back to life, Im confident that they can do anything. Many thanks to Chis, Zach and the entire staff of Third Coast Guitar and Amp Repair for preserving this legendary instrument. I cant stop playing it!

These guys are phenomenal luthiers. Ive been coming here since the late 90s and they have taken care of everything from guitar setups to completely broken necks, repaired with pristine results. Couple this with a friendly staff and quick turnarounds and Third Coast becomes the gold standard for guitar service.

Im a dolt who destroyed his guitar attempting to fix it and Third Coast Guitar saved me.See... my semi-hollow frame ate my guitar input jack. After attempting to fish it out for hours I decided that drilling a larger hole was a great idea... it wasnt.I just assumed the cost would be worth more than the guitar but they did a quick, solid fix that will likely last the life of the guitar.Oh they get bonus points for not laughing at me too.

Great place! They were recommended to me by several musicians. I brought a ES335 in for a finish repair. Chris (owner) after viewing the guitar determined it was a manufacturer defect and could not be properly repaired. Chris handled all the details with the manufacturer and I received a new ES335. Third Coast is a great advocate for musicians. I see why they were highly recommended. Good old fashioned customer Care.

As an avid high end / vintage guitar collector, I searched endlessly to find a company that would give my collection the quality of work and attention to detail my guitars deserve. Even though they are halfway across the country for me, its been worth every penny shipping my guitars to them and working with Chris and his experienced team to do every large and small repair my collection needs. They are fantastic with communication and are very honest with quoting. I am a client for life and I would highly recommend Third Coast to anybody.

I rarely ever leave poor reviews anywhere, but feel the need to inform potential customers of a potential problem they may encounter.Third Coast Guitar may have excellent technicians as others have stated. Unfortunately I will never know.Facts: I dropped off my Martin guitar for a repair. The technician that checked me in and took my guitar told me it was a minor and easy repair (trim on the neck started to come loose). He said it would probably be a few weeks given it was around the holidays. 12 weeks later I called to just come in and pick up my guitar which hadn’t been touched - no repair started. I gave up.Unfortunately, Third Coast Guitar never called me even to just give me an update. I had to call them twice for updates. First it was they were waiting on Martin regarding warranty work. The second call I said I would have gladly paid for the repair myself. The third time at 12 weeks, I just said I want my guitar back.I will have to find another repair shop now.Observations: 1.) There seemed to be little urgency to follow-up with Martin regarding warranty work. I got the sense that if I hadn’t called the first time, they still wouldn’t have followed up. The Technician to which I talked said they would check with Martin. This was a month after I dropped it off. Again I would have gladly paid for it myself. Stay on top of that if told it could be warranty work all you potential customers. 2.) A courtesy call or two with updates would have gone a long way, even if it’s bad news. My guitar would still be there waiting. Whether they have 10 guitars to repair or 2000 to repair in the backlog, a courtesy call takes 30 seconds and keeps the customer informed and usually happy. 3.) I expect there will be a reason or two that it took this long. But seriously, 12 weeks and not even touched. No apology when I picked it up. That made me wonder how often this happens. But that’s just an observation and I could be the anomaly.

I brought in an old amp I inherited to see what could be done to repair and restore it. The owner was very honest and forthcoming about what they could do in my budget, and also cautioned me about putting too much money into extensive repairs, since the amp isnt particularly valuable. The work I had done was performed quickly and on budget, and my old amp sounds great! An all-around great experience working with Third Coast.ADDED on 2/17/20- Another great experience w/ Third Coast setting up a guitar. Great attention to detail in the work. Guitar techs reached out via phone to update me on their progress and verify some specific details. Great setup and great service.

I went today for a estimate concerning a crack I put in the top of my 5 month old Taylor. I was greeted by a friendly younger guy. The younger guy began to give me a bit of round a bout and not too sure how to answer my questions. The younger guy than said let me get Chris. As Chris came out thru the doorway you could already see by the expression on his face he was bothered. Chris gave me a vague explanation on why he couldnt match the paint and went right into his speech about how much he loves his super glue. When Chris realized I knew quite a bit about paint and was a former auto body guy he studdard thru his last sentences about the repair. He told me nothing about doing any bracing to the crack on the inside all he said he was going to was to super glue the crack and blend a little paint that wouldnt match for $450.00. Third coast guitar is a over sized, over employed sweat shop. I immediately called Taylor (who I cannot believe recommended me) and told them what I thought of the recommendation and what I thought about ThirdCoastGuitars skills. Yes I left and found someone else that was extremely caring about how I felt about my guitar being damaged, walked me thru the process step by step and told me what it would look like done...NEWAlready knowing part of Chriss response will be if you paint why dont you do it. Its simple when you damage something you care about of your own sometimes you just want to find someone you trust and get the damn thing out of your face because it makes you sick to look at it. Make sense? Im sure it does TY

Benny and Zach were the two techs that brought my Martin acoustic guitar back to life. The two, along with everyone else i spoke to in their absence, were so courteous, well informed and very patient when they explained to me how the repairs my guitar needed were going to be performed and why. Ive had my guitar since the late 90s and i use it all the time. They immediately related how they understood the importance and relationship i had with my musical instrument. I felt very safe leaving my guitar with them, i knew from the very start it was in good hands. Benny and Zach were on top of keeping me updated on the progress and assured me that all was going well. It takes a while for repairs to be made at Third Coast but this is a result of them being busy because people know they do good work and to me personally it is worth the wait knowing that in the end I will get the quality repair done which my guitar deserves. I had a big crack in the body of my guitar. They fixed it so good and matched the coating so perfect. They also did a complete refret and a neck and bridge adjust. Upon picking it up, the instrument sounds and feels like new. I played a gig two days later and i was able to tell right away how much easier the guitar was to play and how beautiful it resonated. I will not take it anywhere else from now on except at Third Coast. Thank you Benny and Zach and the rest of the crew at Third Coast - you guys are so in tune !

This place is amazing. Was recommended to come here by a big chain music store. The people who work here really care about customer service and seem to love their job. Went here to fix a broken bridge on a Spanish Classical Guitar. The person helping me was Nate, and as soon as I walked in he started contacting the manufacturer and the seller of my Guitar. Everyone there is super nice, extra knowledgeable and beyond friendly! I will make a very long story short, within an hour, I felt more progress and customer service than I have had in past 10 years at other guitar stores. Everything about Third Coast super exceeded my expectations, and now I have a brand new Spanish Classical Guitar in my home. Was totally not expecting that, but so happy that it turned out that way! They accused me of dropping it after I left.1. An employee helped me carry my equipment out of the shop and put it in the car2. I called two hours later after testing the head at home and brought it back the next day3. At no point did I drop my head or even set it on the ground. Store to car, car to practice space, practice space to car, car to shopI love the bass setup but do not appreciate being accused of mishandling my own equipment and paying for a repair on an amp that wasnt done. A good friend who was a luthier gave me one of the guitars he built. So, needless to say, one of a kind instrument (named the Conwell Hurricane after my buddy who built it). But it needed a lot of work to make it the spectacular guitar it deserved to be. I was not going to take chances with the repairs, so I went to Tobias Music in Westmont Il and talked to Ken and Paul. Theyve always given me great advice for any guitar questions Ive had. They didnt hesitate in telling me to give it to Third Coast. Tobias Music is a pickup point for Third Coast. Twice a week Nate from Third Coast stops in and picks up the guitars and brings them to their shop in Chicago. The fixes included:1. Replacing missing wood inlay2. Replace the bridge, saddle, and nut3. Refinish the entire guitar4. Repair the dings in the wood5. Adjust neck, action, and intonation6. Repair wood joints7. Fix a bow in top of the bodyThats a lot of work. Nate picked up the guitar and told me what would need to be done. They got back to me with a quote that I could live with. The luthier who worked on my guitar was Corey. He did exceptional work! I would contact him every so often asking for updates. Hed get back to me with pictures and description of where he was at in the process. Which I very much appreciated. It took a long time to get it back but as I was told by the guys at Tobias, its worth the wait. And boy, was it! The detail work was perfect. They did a gloss nitro finish that reflected like a mirror. The wood repairs were beautiful. I dont know how, but Corey repaired some pretty rough joint work and made them look literally seamless. The action and intonation are the best on any guitar Ive ever played. I tried playing open chords up an octave and they sounded good! That never happens!Ive read a few reviews about people griping about cost. I cant comment on that either way except to say that I wanted this work done by someone who had expert level skills. And thats what I got. It was worth every penny. Thanks Chris, Nate, and especially Corey!

I don’t often leave bad reviews for businesses, however I’ve made an exception for my experience with getting a bass repaired under warranty here. I’ll refrain from stating opinions and only describe the facts of what happened.I brought the bass in on September 1st, confirmed with the receiving technician that the bad tuning machine would be covered under warranty, and stated that I wouldn’t want or need a setup, although he wrote “possible setup” on the work order. I was informed that the repair could take a week to a month, depending on how quickly Fender shipped the parts, and all tuners would be replaced. After a couple weeks of radio silence, I called and was told that they hadn’t gotten a response from Fender and would try again. More weeks passed and eventually I found out, also by having to call them, that the tuners shipped on October 2nd. I waited through a month of silence, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, before once again contacting them on November 7th only to be told that they had received the wrong tuners from Fender on October 22nd. I let them know that because of the unacceptable wait, I would be picking up the bass and to contact me when the tuners finally came in so I could bring it back. The next day, November 8th, I received a call that the bass had been fixed and was ready for pickup. When picking the instrument up, it had only one new tuning machine which appeared to be an unbranded Chinese part which can be found cheaply on eBay, rather than a Jackson-branded tuner which would match the other three. The tech which handed me the guitar couldn’t explain what had been done. On top of that, I was handed a $70 bill for a setup which I had refused twice during the time they had the bass but which was performed anyway. (I wouldn’t request a service that costs almost half the price of the bass itself.) I gave two stars for this review because the technician was generous in admitting their mistake and allowing me to leave with the instrument, which still had three janky tuners after almost 10 weeks in the shop.I believe that a lot of blame lay with Fender for not fulfilling their warranty obligations in a timely or competent manner. However, during the time they had the instrument, the techs at Third Coast were uncommunicative and aloof, and didn’t give me confidence in the quality of their work or their customer service. I will not bring any of my other instruments here for paid repairs or further warranty service.
