Do Not Work Here! This is my first year as a lifeguard and my experience with this company is terrible. I was constantly put at different pools and my schedule was never visible on time. They would put shift on my schedule the day before I was supposed to work. The staffers never answer their phones but expect you to answer at all times. My paycheck was almost never accurate. Every coworker I worked with had an issue with our staffer. I will NEVER recommend this company to anyone and I will NEVER work here again! if I could rate this company negative stars I would.
Our HOA uses American Pools. We have one lifeguard who is very polite and punctual. If she isnt here then we dont know what to expect. Our pool is supposed to be open right now and the lifeguard is MIA. This has been a theme all summer long. Most of the lifeguards theyve sent dont even know how to vacuum the pool.
This is the first year our HOA has used American Pools and the experience is night and day from our previous pool company. Steven and Tori, our senior staff, are amazing and have been a breath of fresh air to our facility. Their suggestions and dedication have made the first few weeks of our season the best in the twenty one years we’ve lived in our community. I hope all of the staff of American Pools are as dedicated as the ones we have at North Crossing, they have changed our pool experience in so many ways! I can’t say enough about how pleased I am!
Our HOA just contracted with this company for our new pool. Im not impressed. The good news is the lifeguards that they have at our pool are professional and friendly, but their lack of staffing (someone called out) has our pool closed completely on a Saturday and Sunday! They should have a manager cover or something. They blame a labor shortage, but I suspect if they were paying their lifeguards enough (or paying OT) then wed have coverage. Also, our pool bottom is consistently dirty- it doesnt appear they vacuum properly or frequently enough, or something.
Terrible terrible company. Worst ever company. I am a lifeguard of the 2021 season and I must say this is my worst experience working for a company overall. They are very disorganized. I am a jamaican guard and they have us cleaning all the pools. Whenever the pools are clean they switch us to another pool to clean it and it goes on and on. They are very spiteful and inhumane. They have us working everyday for 3 months and kicked us out of the apt the morning after we finish working. Not even a 1 day to do shopping since we had no time to do anything because we were working all day without any day off. They spitefully try to steal your pay. They do this by not adding hours you worked or clocking you out early. Also to add, they deduct things from your pay that is not in the contract. They treat their workers like slaves and dogs. They use us and discard us when it suits them. Never working for this evil company again!!!! American pools need to treat and pay their lifeguards with fairness. They gave us zinc pots to cook. When I cook all the zinc runs off on the food and it almost made me sick. Also to add, they need to remember that without lifeguard there is no American pools. God is watching!!!!!!! If I could I would give zero stars. Sometimes I wonder if they pay people to comment good things because a company this terrible cant have some of these good reviews. Hope they dont delete this one. Turn back, do not work for this company, it is never too late to turn back. I thank you. Bye.
Cant get anyone to return a phone call about a W-2 for my daughter - called 4 times and left messages
My experience with American Pools was very bad. I applied in January 2020, and also scored an interview in January which I was very happy about. After the interview I was enrolled in a Red Cross Lifeguard class to obtain my certification. Since 2020 was the year Covid-19 started, everything was out of place. My lifeguard advisor NEVER kept me updated with anything. He said he had a pool for me, I never got to work. He even sent in the paperwork for me to fill, but that got me nowhere. The fact that I was not kept up to date with anything made me very mad. In July 2020 I told the advisor that I will be willing to travel farther in Maryland just so I can work. He told me great, and he will put me at a pool. Since then I never got to work, and I have not heard anything since July of 2020 and It it now February 2021, very bad experience.
Great guards....great season!
Im proud to work with the Columbia Maryland American Pool team.
American Pools did not fully go forward with our contract and we have had multiple issues. They charged almost 2,500 dollars to open 10 days early but at the end of the season when we asked for a credit only gave us $11 per hour when we were owed over 70 lifeguards hours that we did not receive. In our contract an additional hour is listed as $27.95. There is nowhere in the contract that lists the cost of a lifeguard as $11/hour. American Pools stated there is a cost was for supervision; however, several times when a manager was sent by American Pools to give our lifeguard a break or to check up on her (for a minute or two before leaving to go sit in his car for about 10 more minutes), the manager or supervisor did not have his lifeguarding certification. On one such occasion when the supervisor came to assist our lifeguard, the health department told our lifeguard that she could not leave the supervisor guarding the pool because he could not produce appropriate documentation for his lifeguarding certification, and our lifeguard had to supervise him at all times. Several times our lifeguard would regulate the chemicals in our main pool and baby pool, only to have to shut down the baby pool after the supervisor left because he had added an inappropriate amount of chemicals that left the water dangerous for people to swim in. Our lifeguard could likely testify to her displeasure in having to fix problems incurred by her supervisors erratic visits. As an example of the supervisors erratic visits, he would often show up at odd hours before the pool would open one time asking our pool bird member to open the gate at 6:30 only to come in use the bathroom and leave. As a suggestion moving forward for American Pools, I think to be allowed to supervise the lifeguards, it is necessary for the supervisor to be certified in lifeguarding and CPR. To this effect, I would argue that American Pools did NOT provide adequate supervision according to the contract or based off this and the amount of e-mails and phone calls we have made. We have also not asked for the over $200 in receipts that we have from purchasing chemicals or for the labor that our Pool Board for opening the pool which was also written in the contract. American Pools provided very little help in the actual opening of our pool. Had it not been for our proactive Pool Board, we would have likely opened much, much later than originally quoted by American Pools. If you are looking for a pool management company, please steer clear of American Pools LLC.
Slave OwnersThis company practices modern day slavery! The Jamaicans (black workers) that work for them during their Pool Cleaning were given an hourly rate they were supposed to be paid but once they arrived, they were told they would get paid per pool so they may get to clean two pools a day. Most days are 10-16 hour days which means this company is getting away with not paying them overtime. They go weeks without having a day off and dont get paid overtime. Its interesting that they dont hire Americans for pool cleaning, maybe because they know they couldnt get away with this. Also, they conveniently make mistakes with their paychecks, and take out money from their paychecks without explaining what the deductions are for. Something needs to be done about this company without allowing them to take it out on the Jamaican workers who are afraid to stand up for themselves for fear of retaliation. Pay your workers for the work they do. Stop working them without a day off! Pay them overtime! Stop deducting money from their paychecks illegally. Stop treating those workers like slaves! Dont take this review out on them!
Horrible company. Half of the 5 star reviews are from current employees.Let’s start with years ago when I was told to go clean the pool I was assigned to with no help, before Memorial Day (before my start date, and was rudely told to go do it without my supervisor) just to find out I was doing unpaid work. There was a massive pile of debris because no one came to place a cover on the pool at the end of the season. I then had to be the one to clean it. 2 days before the season began. The pool was never properly maintained the whole season, as I was never trained how to do itThe money I requested to be withheld from my tax forms are NEVER correct. (People in the office changed them) so I then have to pay back into it at the end of the yearMy paycheck was never correct; so if you work for them track your hours. EACH ONE.The pools are never cleaned unless the lifeguards do it, and many don’t know how because they aren’t trained to do so.American pool takes whatever contracts they can get, sight unseen. Then hires lifeguards and forces them to work ridiculous hours to make sure they stay open. They make false promises to their employees to get them to work, then don’t follow through once the summer beginsSome lifeguards just leave in the middle of their shifts and come back when they please. The biggest problem is the lack of organization and professionalism. But honestly nothing would probably change since it’s been YEARS and it’s the same problems year after year
American Pool does not know how to properly pay their lifeguards, (Pay scale, Direct Deposit, or checks, etc.) and puts their eggs in one basket, with the detriment of other pools with aging equipment.
Great Company to work for. If there is ever a problem they fix it asap. I have 3 children and 2 of them worked there for several years now my 15 year old will work there this summer. Jess at Columbia is the best. Very personable and helps with anything you need.
I live in an apartment complex that employs this company to manage the pool. It is my considered opinion that not only is this company incompetent but they really don’t care about the safety of their client’s residence. Some examples are as follows. Although they remove the cover from the pool memorial day the pool was opened without ever having been thoroughly cleaned. It took multiple phone calls from our management and multiple trips for them to get the pool to where it was usable by the residence. Several times this summer they have left a 14 year old child in charge of the pool. She had no idea how to even check the PH and Chlorine levels let alone regulate it. Additionally it is my understanding that it is illegal for a 14-year-old lifeguard to be left alone at a pool. Four times this year the pool has opened late because the company failed to provide a lifeguard. When the lifeguards arrive they typically hide out in the shed until guests come to use the pool. Said differently they don’t bother to even make an attempt to clean out the pool each morning of leaves, mulch and other debris. Choosing instead to sit inside the shed playing on their cell phones or watch Netflix on their computers. My calls to the company have gone unanswered. The receptionist answering the phone indicated she would have a supervisor return my calls on multiple occasions but no one ever has. If I could give this company zero stars I would but since one is the lowest rating that’s what they have been given. If you have a commercial or residential property I would not under any circumstances ever even consider hiring this company. Their failure to provide lifeguards who know how to check the chemical balance of the pool and to keep it clean is an indication of their lack of caring for the safety and health of their clients. Their disregard for the safety of their clients, their lack of providing basic services of a pool management company and overall incompetence is evident in their actions and attitudes.
My Experience at American Pool has been nothing short of amazing. This company helps young professionals prepare for opportunities outside and within the company. They are dedicated to their staff and providing the best service possible.
This is the worst pool company. They do not showup half the time, there was a chemical spill, and they dont clean the pool. Never use them! EVER
7 out of the 10 Five Star reviews from this year are from current employees within the company.
This company is a joke and provides a terrible employment experience for their young workforce. They don’t know how to properly pay or deliver earnings to employees, they barely allow them to work any hours, getting in contact with a competent individual in their corporate office is extremely difficult, and they prey on teens with the hope of working only to get the opposite result. Their employment practices are non- compliant with federal regulations and the DOL will be notified via an official complaint being filed. If this company comes to your child’s school to work for them during the summer or any other time, RUN!!!
Unprofessional, does not care about their guards. Find a new company
I thank God for the opportunity he gave me to send my son this year as a lifeguard because he has not saved the semester well. The American Pool company is excellent at taking you from the first day, it is excellent giving you impossible schedules and it is excellent not fulfilling promises and commitments that involve the individual.Viva American Pool, urraaaaaa ...
If you are a lifeguard save your time there are way better pool companies you can work for . But you can always go and work for them and figure out why I’m writing this review .
Dont work here if u want ur schedual taken no hours or tons of hours that ur worked like a dog just to get disrespected by higher staff
Reviewing as a community member that uses American Pools as our management pool company. We have been in a contract with them for three years and every year we discuss whether it is worth the cancellation fee to just be rid of their negligence and awful customer service. Every year we give them the benefit of the doubt and say it can’t be worse than their service and response times this year. Unhealthy water, lifeguards not showing up on time or falling asleep on duty to name a few. And all three years we have been proven wrong. It can and has continued to get worse. Here we are Memorial Day weekend and our pool cannot open to the community because it has not been properly maintained despite numerous calls and documented inquiries. They hired individuals that have not been trained to do the job they are asking them to do. A life guard who has been in the US for only two days is being asked to vacuum and test the water in a pool with no instruction. We have spent the better part of 48 hours trying to contact someone with more answers, Sean finally responded to say he cannot take our calls as he is driving lifeguards all around to Pools to work. Seems that getting the pools open should be a priority over getting lifeguards to Pools no one can swim in. Sean was contacted April 11th to fix the coping. Late May and still no fix. The pool was opened on April 11th and drained and power washed and refilled. Since April 11th through May 25th, Sean has stated that he has sent people over on three or four occasions to maintain the pool. Seems 3-4xs in six weeks is not adequate for pool maintenance. Our pictures of orange and green water and a slimy bottom support the need for a better regimen. As a “professional” pool company it was our expectation that a contracted pool company would have the professionalism, experience, and knowledge to properly maintain a pool. In their contract it say all complaints must be submitted in writing and the company has 10 days to respond. Not sure of many other professional operations that have ten days to respond to unacceptable conditions. From now on we will be lodging our complaints with the health inspector as well as Am Pools.
Great company that always goes beyond the limits to ensure that their customers are happy. Takes great care of its employees as well!!
One of the most challenging and rewarding places to work ever. You have to come and check this out!
I was asked to take down my previous review because it was about an employee. The company saw my previous review months ago and said nothing, did nothing. I worked at American pools over the summer and had a bad experience with them. My first week I was scheduled at a pool 45 minutes away from my home and at the time I did not have a way to get there. So I asked the staff member if I could be scheduled at a different pool closer and they said yes and they’ll get back to me with what’s going on. The next day I was awaken by a supervisor banging on my door waking up my whole family because the staff memeber didn’t tell me that the supervisor was picking me up. I was a guard that went to different pools every 2-3 days so I wasn’t familiar with the patrons or what each pool needed. When I went to a new pool I always did the same thing, check skimmers, unlock bathrooms, check pump room, make sure pool levels are good, skim the pool, check the book, if I didn’t do something a regular swimmer did let me know what I missed and I did them. I was working at a pool that I was at maybe once a week and one of the supervisors who pops in regularly and usually chats with me decided to yell at me about how bad of a job I was doing and what I was doing wrong with the pool. My area supervisor or the pop up supervisor never showed me how to vacuum, back wash or fill the pool, every pool is different and Some have different systems. I had to call the office to figure out how to fill up because my supervisor didn’t have time to meet all of his lifeguards. A general supervisor showed up an hour later to show me how to do everything. I had a friend who worked in a different county and they stopped in to the office to turn in paperwork and overheard the staff mocking my last name trying to pronounce it because I have two last names “ Wicks-Witucki” they thought it was funny to say “ Wicks Witukiss “ or “ Wicks Kentucky “. I was picked on most of my childhood about my last name and to hear adults say that was awful. I also worked with a lifeguard who was from another country, this was their first experience in America and all they could tell me was the supervisor threatens to send them back to their home country if they don’t work, they live in a 2 bedroom apartment with 6 other guards and they rarely get 1 day off. After that I turned in my 2 weeks to whoever I had an email address that worked at American pools and left the company. I was a lifeguard at other companies and I know not all lifeguard companies are the best. American Pools pays good if you ask and has decent hours but do not respect guards at all.
Great place to work. Office staff very helpful.
This company doesnt even deserve the one star that I gave. Like my older siblings i decided to work as a lifeguard for my first job. This company had emailed me to offer me summer and i jumped at the opportunity. One of my biggest regrets... On my first day, i was told a manger would be at my pool frequently to check the chemical levels and to regulate them, because i was not trained to do so, nobody ever showed up on the first day of the year to help me on my first day. I was told that they were so sorry and they would be there as soon as i got there on the second day, no shocker but they didnt show up. On this day i was complained to by a swimmer that the pool needed to be vacuumed, and when i called the main office for the 4th time that day to tell them i immediately need a manager to come assist me in vacuuming it, or teach me how to. Third day and nobody came, I began to get so frustrated that i called my parents crying because the same patron had come and complained and asked for the office number to complain about me, which would cause me to get a strike... Fortunately my parents came and figured out how to do it while i was guarding the pool. This is just one of the instances in which the company had been nothing but rude to me about the amount of time i had called saying OH its you again, what is it now? The office staff (who were all adults) were beyond rude to me for simply asking for their help. Finally on the 5th day working there somebody came to help me. Then on my 7th day working I had a school responsibility to take care of and i was told that i could not call out unless it was 2 weeks prior to the day i needed off. This was very frustrating because i had not gotten my schedule until the day before my first day of work which only gave me 8 days to call out, which was not enough. I was then told that it didnt matter to them and that i had to go to work. I ended up having to pull my younger brother out of school early just so he could cover my shift. Flash forward to the middle of the summer when i came back after having a day off and my pool had some sort of algae growing in it. As soon as i noticed that there was a problem i called and nobody came all day long, forcing me to close the pool which angered many patrons who threatened to call the office to complain about me, causing more strikes. The next day a manager came and helped me fix the pool by telling me what to do and then leaving without giving me a chance to ask him any questions. A few weeks later we got a new supervisor who could barely speak any english, which was okay with me because thats the way it is and i tried my hardest to understand him. Then one day without any warning the Health Department came and told me i am not allowed to operate the pool without a pool operator on the pool deck at all times, which i didnt have. i closed the pool and called the office to come and be there so i could reopen the pool and then got yelled at and told to reopen the pool and to go against the health departments demands. They continued to tell me to break the rules of the health department which is also cause for getting my lifeguarding license revoked. Another day the supervisor came in and decided to yell at me and write me up for not logging the names of the guests, which i did not know was one of my responsibilities. While this was annoying i just went with it and said okay and that i was sorry. Then one of the days that i was off, one of the patrons invited me to a pool party at the pool and i decided to go because i had become friends with her and began giving her daughter swim lessons. It was on this day that i saw my supervisor come in to talk to the lifeguard on duty, who was on his phone, and just talked to him and did not reprimand him for what he was doing wrong. Im not sure if maybe was sexist or was friends with the lifeguard or whatever the situation was. After all this i finally finished out the summer and decided to never work there ever again. Take from this what you will.
A really really nice placeband good for minor summer job
So, over here at Mission Place Appartments. The Sunday lifeguard has two guys with her and they are drinking beer. Wth.Dont trust your kids over here. She might be to busy to save them.....
Dishonest and very deceiving Co. I took my 18 year old son for interview which they immediately hire him as life guard. We were then instructed to pay for uniforms 60$ and 144.49$ for a 1 week training course for certification. My son shows up for training and was told he couldnt move forward because he didnt pass pretest. We were never told a pretest was required before training can begin. We decided not to move forward and requested refund for course and uniforms. We contacted Jennifer the following Monday around May 26 2016. She informed us that we couldnt get refund for uniforms but we would receive refund for training course In 2 weeks. We waited 1 month and half and never received anything. Finally I disputed charges with credit card company and they were unsuccessful at retrieving refund. I also received 2 emails stating that my refund was placed through PayPal which was a lie. I then contacted there corporate office and they stated they would take care of it. Spoke to Miranda who was very nice she assured me I would receive my refund of 144.49 in a week. Well I did recieve a refund 6 days later for 85$!!!! I am now taking contemplating going to civil court. This company doesnt deserve the 1 star I gave them.
This is horrible company I m working for them after 1 month I didn’t receive my money and when I call them to help me they get attitude and they said go to court, sham on this company
Great company and fine business office!
Very organized and professional.
They made me keep the pool open even though the health inspector told me to close it numerous times.
Nice people
American Pool is absolutely terrible to their guards.
