I still love this place from when I used to go in and demo guitars back in the 70s. I took my old Strat out of storage a few months ago and had MG set it up. Very fair price and quality job.More recently I went in to get a chord book and Russ gave me a 1/2 hour music theory lesson most of which was WAY over my head but useful and informative and included with the price of the book. This is a guy whos extremely knowledgeable and likes to share his knowledge. The shop hasnt been the same since the fire, but its still a destination for the faithful and a great local business to support.

Great Music Store...A real treasure trove of all musical instruments. The staff have incredible knowledge of guitars, basses, drums and all stuff musical.A breath of fresh air compared to guitar center, which is like a walmart with kids who dont know a Fender from a snow shovel, and huge turnover rate!Joe Philips

A mentally disabled friend of mine went in to the Music Guild to buy a guitar and Russ sold him a beat up old Kent electric guitar (my friend had no amp) for an exorbitant amount. I cant remember the exact price but it was over $200.When I confronted Russ about this he said it was a collectors item and shuffled through collector magazines attempting to prove its worth. Took him a very long time until he finally found some reference to a Kent (probably a Hagstrom) that was worth what my friend paid for it. Knowing Russ, he would likely have switched out all the useful parts anyway and replaced them with bogus ones.Even if this WAS a collectors item, my friend wasnt looking for a collectors item. He just wanted a simple used acoustic guitar to play. Russ took advantage of his mental handicap and gullibility and convinced him to buy this piece of junk.I would highly advise people to stay away from this place. How hes ever been able to survive all these years pulling stuff like this Ill never know. I guess there must be a lot of gullible people around. I guess he makes his living by exploiting the gullible.

I had the unfortunate experience of doing business with the Music Guild. I brought in a vintage amp for repair. I got it back, and some of the issues were solved, but it was still having severe problems, to the point of being unplayable. I told them this, and their response was well we can take another look at it if you want. Great, I can spend more money to not have a working amp. Anyway, Ill paste in the email I just got from an ACTUAL amp tech about what he did to repair the amp. This is the section of that email that describes the mess inside the amp:Repaired broken leads inside the reverb tank - that restored operation. Cleaned controls & tube pins, got rid of some noise there. AC plug was falling off the cable so now you have a new one. Replaced leaky caps serving output tube control grids. And then there was the hi voltage filter cap kluge - new Sprague caps were added in parallel to the old filter caps. And arranged in a semi haphazard way. Though taped to the old caps, they were swinging around a bit, and thats an invitation to break off. Also caps temp rated at 65C were parked above the power transformer and over power resistors which would probably bake them past their temperature limit. Its possible that some of this shoddy work was done by or on behalf of a previous owner. Even if thats the case, why didnt the Music Guild fix this?Ive also had the pleasure of having them swap the pickups of a guitar I bought from them, to find that the pickups were out of phase with each other.Stay away. Stay far, far away.

Oldest guitar store in town, maybe even around the surrounding towns, this place has so much old/vintage,even antique instruments and hardware/pedals ect. that it should be classified as the danbury instrument and musicians museum, Russ himself is a jazz player from way back,he started the store in the late 60s i think.he knows many of the old blues and jazz greats, and has been around the block many many times.if you go to the music guild, TAKE NOTES!. a wealth of knowledge stands behind the cluttered but somehow organized counter. in short. the guild is the definition of old school music stores. and if its vintage classic old school your looking for. this is the place! new stuff as well.cash is king, but the guild still remains the old school walk in deal/ barter/ trade guitar store of the 60s,70s and 80s. existing in the 21st century.
