This is a great place to get an early morning jolt or an afternoon pick me up. My favorite is the London Fog but all their coffees are delicious. Great place to support. If you have not read their story, please do so on the web page. I love it.
This coffee bus was so cute! I could tell it’s well loved by the community, there were a few people hanging out and chatting when I stopped by. Had a delicious oat milk iced chai latte. Will be back!
We had a great visit here - knowledgeable service, comfortable seating and interesting decor to go a long with the wonderful cafe. The spicy mocha selection was not too sweet and just the right amount of heat. Samples were offered for both and hot and cold variety. Closes early so not an option for evening adventures. Also a good source for roasted beans. The roaster is responsive and provides pick-up options as well as subscription based discounts.
Great coffee for a great price. The bus is a really cool setup
I was excited when I google mapped coffee shops and there was a coffee shop not corporate or has not been around for 101 years. Also it was rated very high. In my opinion: the two baristas were not particularly friendly. Seemed to be put out that I wanted an iced drink. Ordered an iced latte and what did I get? Ice, a shot not made in front of me and milk sloshed in to the top. Paid $3.50 for it. It was gross. Only had liquid brown sugar as a sweetener. Super limited choices. wanted a pound of their in-house roasted coffee to try in my espresso machine and they dont even have a grinder to grind it. I poured my drink out and now Im at Dunkin Donuts. Fortunately for others my experience is an outlier of what others report.
Rock star baristas. I’m from out of town, but anytime I am passing through Hickory I always stop by the bus! Worth the 3 hour drive! Great place to find Hickory locals.
Best coffee around! Always enjoy my time on the bus! Great people and good laughs.
Delicious coffee and awesome staff. My go-to specialty coffee in Hickory.
I was so ECSTATIC when I mapquested coffee shops and there was a coffee shop not corporate, or so tyrannical that they crucify me for not using Latin dictation for their coffee sizes. Also, the reviews were so good, SO GOOD. and almost suspiciously so. In my opinion: the two baristas basically treated me like royalty. As soon as I walked in the bus they stopped what they were doing and immediately bowed before me and replied, “how may we serve you.” I ordered a simple ice latte, and what did I get? ICE, but not just any old gas station locker ice, the two baristas proceeded to roll out an immaculate sculpture of ice, chiseled in such a form of artistry that rivaled that of any Roman statuesque fraud that the Smithsonian could conjure. After the baristas chipped off my own section of artisan ice...the espresso, perfect, dark, mysterious. It was as if I was at the circe de sole as I watched them pull my shot for my latte. And finally, at last, as if I didn’t think it could be better. Milk, ice cold, frothy, freshly squeezed from a cow that was being grass fed behind the bus. From my astonishment, I literally paid a measly 3.50$ which I thought was an insult to this establishment. It’s highway robbery. As I drank my coffee in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, I began to wonder what an insult it is to even have the absolute gall to be in the same city as the coffee bus, just give up dunkin’, you’ve lost. Your time has come. All in all. This experience was religious, breathtaking, poetic. Hoziers song “Take me to Church” was written about the TapRoot Coffee Bus. Amen.
Cute place. Great idea
Always extremely friendly staff, great atmosphere, and even better coffee!
Splendid in-house roasted coffee, hosted by knowledgeable staff in a quaint and welcoming converted bus. I thought it was an interesting setup, and was pleased to have stumbled on this gem with my wife.
I ordered the Americano. It was a delicious flavorful cup. Coffee had robust flavor. I had to take my coffee and go but there were chairs outside for people to sit and enjoy.
We came to this little coffee bus last year, and it was so cool, this year we went back and it was a full size bus! I was so happy with the success of the owner being able to make a local business. Everything was amazing, the coffee, the employees, and the atmosphere. Coming back again in 2020!
Love the coffee! I was introduced to TAPROOT through my work place, spent 2 or 3 months trying to find them, and on a whim stopped by the bus and it turned out to be TAPROOT! The coffee is bold and flavorful., and the price is great! This is an awesome group of people who do everything in house.
I was lucky enough to experience Taproot during the Hickory stop of the Cycle NC M2C ride. I thought the bus was creative and the coffee was excellent - and cheaper than I expected. Good luck on your journey!
Coffee on a bus, super unique coffee drinking experience here in Hickory, so thankful to finally have high level coffee!I met Malachi last summer when he was serving his home-roasted coffee at the Farmer’s Market on weekends and his talent has only continued to grow! He makes awesome coffee, picking great beans, and his roasting is consistently awesome. He’s a hard worker and a nice guy so it’s great to see him open his own unique business and serve really excellent product!

Best coffee you can get. Friendly staff. Small town feel.
Delicious fresh coffee with a rich, smooth flavor! We loved the Honduran Dark Roast as we like dark coffee. We also tried the Peru which was smooth tasting as well. We ordered by mail and our order was received promptly and well packaged.
Was shopping the Hickory Tree Consignment today and met Malachi. What a great guy and excellent coffee! Always enjoy local entrepreneurs. We definitely will buy his coffee again!
Great coffee! My wife and I have been looking for a coffee roaster and fresh coffee since closing our own roasting business and this guy is on point! Awesome job!
We have been wanting to stop here for a while and finally got the chance today. Great deal for amazing coffee and a funky fresh atmosphere. In case you’re wondering, any form of payment will work (that’s what took us so long to try it we figured it was cash only but it’s definitly not!) We ordered an espresso shot and a latte and both were better than anywhere else we have tried. We will be regulars! Thanks!
Best coffee in town!
Nice atmos and not your run of the mill cup oJoe here! Nice to watch your coffee made fresh in front of you and not squirted in a cup from a container thats how many hours old?Sit there and enjoy it and you can pick up on some different taste notes!
Its a unique setup that makes a fantastic cappuccino. By far the best experience Ive had when entering a school bus.
I didnt know I was a coffee snob until I tried Malachis Costa Rican dark roast. Having fresh coffee in the morning makes for such a great start to the day! You can always find the Taproot booth at the Hickory Farmers Market, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Stop by for a cup of hot or iced coffee, some friendly and informative coffee conversation, AND grab a bag of freshly roasted coffee beans. There is also a small stand in Thistle Dew Nicely gift shop downtown. Definitely worth a stop!
This is where professional coffee drinkers go to enjoy outstanding locally roasted coffee call. If you are not drinking this coffee and you live in Hickory then you probably like Sanka.
Super cool place, super nice owner (he stayed open late for us), and great coffee (and non-dairy milks!)
By far the BEST coffee in Hickory and surrounding areas. There is really no comparison and youre truly missing out if you havent stopped by. The atmosphere is definitely cozy and their new bus is awesome with plenty of space. Its nice and toasty inside and theres even a cute pac-man game. Its so important to support local, and as my husband and I own a small business in hickory as well, I will gladly support them over any corporate coffee shop hands down - you can not even begin to compare the quality of ingredients that go into your cuppa Joe.That said, the only improvement I can see them making would be in respect to customer service. Maybe its me and I expect a bit too much on that end... and its not that anyone has been blatantly rude or anything. There has just been a couple experiences where I have felt a level of apathy amongst the staff. Such that, i dont feel like a valued customer. However, I will say I have had wonderful experiences with the blonde female staff memeber (sorry i dont know her name).Either way, youre silly not to support these young adults trying to stand out in a city, that quite frankly, has one too many starbucks and other basic coffee houses. SUPPORT LOCAL. Hickory wont change until we support local businesses like these, that put their heart and soul on the line to offer superior and crafted products for the end-consumer.
Great coffee. The owner, Malachi, is dedicated to his craft. I highly recommend the medium roast.
Coffee roasted to perfection ! I could identify and distinguish all the flavors, body all the elements from the beans ! Highly recommend to taste this amazing fresh roasted coffee beans ! Good luck !
Friendly, delicious atmosphere! Highly recommend the orange mocha
I’m used to a good European coffee, I hesitate to try new coffee houses in the USA because almost all the time they are burnt and bitter. Finally I have found a place where the coffee is not just good ... is perfect !! Smooth and bold.
Excellent iced vanilla latte! A favorite stop in Hickory, NC.
Absolutely delicious coffee and such a wonderful set up.
