This unique ukulele store in downtown Hilo has a broad selection of Hawaiian and other stringed instruments. The shop owner was as knowledgeable about his inventory as he was charismatic. Worth a visit for any musician finding themselves on the windward side of the Big Island.
If you want the REAL Hawaii feel when and not fall for the touristy shops along Kamehameha avenue, shop this place! HILO Uke store.Rick is a very knowledgeable and good uke player. He has a lot of local players (including famous ones) that come to either play there or give lessons. The tricks that I learned from taking lessons with Rick has been great. The Aloha that is shared is priceless.Best to come in with an open mind and talk to Rick. He knows so much and can really help you chose the right instrument.
Brought my guitar in for some new strings on my electric guitar after calling in with some questions and talked to a guy named rick. He was super helpful and friendly over the phone. I went to his shop and was 3 times as awesome in person. Brought my guitar in only needing some strings which was really well priced and even strung it for free.Highly recommend this shop for the professionalism that I received when I went in to any one looking for ukuleles or help with guitars. Rick knows his stuff and will definitely have you leave with a smile on your face for sure.
I left my grandfathers ukulele here MONTHS ago to have the bridge repaired. I have never received a call telling me its finished and to come pick it up. Its been nearly 5 or 6 months. Ive physically been to the shop several times trying to get it back and was told it was almost finished and that I would get a call back. I have never received a call. There is no email to get in touch and they never seem to answer their phone. All I want is my grandfathers ukulele back. So I am desperately trying to get the owners attention this way.
Great little shop. Came in and bought exactly what I was looking for. More valuable to me however was the advice I was given. I was amazed and humbled by Rick on his approach to ukelele playing and how amazingly versatile it is! Hope I have the chance to visit here again!
This is a really cool guitar shop. The staff here are friendly. It is also a good place to get instruction. One thing that sets this place apart from many guitar shops on the island is that there are actually practice rooms here. On the mainland this is pretty common but most guitar shops in Hawaii do not have these.
Amazing staff that makes you feel at home. Great selection of Ukuleles and guitars. Couldn’t ask for a better local music store.
I am in utter disgust and shocked by the way we were treated by the store owner.First off- when we went into the store, (door was open with people inside during a Wednesday afternoon) the owner told us he was Not Open.He then proceeded to asking my what my business is there. Wtf? Im prospectively looking at giving you my business... Is that really how you greet your customers? He then continued to belittle us in a degrading manner, basically telling us that we know nothing about music and guitars/ukeleles.On the contrary, I am a musician and have played guitar for over 20 years. I have never in my entire life engaged with such a problematic know-it-all.I kept my mouth shut and thanked him for his time.He even said sorry as we left. Heres a suggestion: how about lets refrain from treating customers in such a way that warrants an APOLOGY. If you have to apologize to a potential customer in your store, youre doing it wrong. One star only because 0 stars is not an option .
Thanks Rick for selling me an awesome ukulele! My family and I enjoyed meeting you! You have such a great passion for music education!🎶
I stopped by on my vacation recently and met Rick, the owner. Rick and I talked guitar and ukulele and various techniques and music disciplines for some time. I thoroughly enjoyed his mana and his expertise and his (typical Hawaiian) laid-back professionalism. Hes got a great store and a wonderful selection. Thanks for making my Hilo day, Rick.Brian from Seattle
Stopped in the shop to check out ukes. Rick was so great, showing my sisters and I how to strum. His lessons were so simple and practical that we understood and put it to practice right away. He also helped with my golf swing! Unfortunately, we live in Washington State, or we would be at his shop every week taking lessons. Great teacher and great guy! Thanks Rick!
Absolutely wonderful! On our trip to Hawaii, my grandmother took me into this shop, and i was hoping to just see some cool ukuleles and maybe play a few. I picked up the first one that caught my eye and started strumming, and immediately rick started talking up a storm about music, ukuleles, his life, and his joy of meeting young people like me. I entered the store looking to play some instruments, and leave with nothing. Instead, I left with a life lesson and a whole new perspective on life, and even the concept of music itself. So thank you so much to rick, the amazing owner of this great shop. Mahalo!
Rick, seemed like a friendly and knowledge guy and I bought a 5 string uke which I asked him to put a pickup in. he told me no problem it will take a week or two well it is now 2 months later ! and he made no attempt to communicate with me at all. Every time I called he had some excuse and said a couple more days. Finally today I asked him to return my money. Very disappointing and completely unproffessional! I cannot recommend him at all. beware!
I bought a tenor ukulele and Rick strung it to my need of a lower G string as well as the others...he is willing to make adjustments anytime you need them as part of his service, no extra charge. He also generous with Kamaaina and senior discounts.I got a great ukulele at a good price with excellent personal service, Mahlon nui loa,Pua Conley
