Wonderful tobacco shop! Was guided and helped by Diane, owner and granddaughter of the founder! She is amazing and you can see why they’ve been in business for so long. Was only in the Houston area a few days and this was on my list. Not many real tobacco shops around these days. Blessings!

In my opinion, this is a close #1 for best cigar lounge & tobbaccoist in the Houston area. Its not because it Houstons oldest cigar shop (54 years), began by a family of women (3 generations now-quality management & attentive knowledgeable employees), an excellent humidor w otherworldly pipe & cigar accessories, an amazing welcoming environment, a cadre of regulars that are just cool men of a certain age, lights out customer service & a prime location (I havent smoked w the group outside due to the brutal summer heat). Its because while others excel in one or two of these. The Briar Shoppe excels in them all, by no accident. Its that they repeatedly deliver on a relaxed, welcoming & inviting experience by providing all the things Ive mentioned & a few I havent. But, again in my opinion, they win by a nose, if not a clear margin. A few cons, parking isnt free (Rice Village) and can be often limited during some hours, they have only one tv (still a great spot to watch sports) and the restroom while nice is small & to the rear of the shop. I strongly & highly recommend them as a cigar lounge must visit: you can check out any time you like, but can never leave once youve experienced what they have to offer.

This is the best tobacco shop in which I have ever set foot. The employees are extremely friendly and courteous, and are absolute experts when it comes to their products. They can develop your tastes in tobacco to that of a true aficionado, and if you go to see friends with their products in hand? You will be able to stand out in the crowd as someone that loves what they do.

I frequented this place a lot when I lived in Rice Village. Their degrees of welcomeness varied and they were often out of stock of the hand rolling tobacco, but it was pretty good stuff with good prices. I had the Norwegian, Danish, Turkish and Amsterdam. All good

Great shop. Friendly and welcoming. Good selection. Indoor (with TV) and outdoor place to sit and smoke. Only issue is parking, gotta pay the meter or those bums will snag you with a ticket, however there is a lot down the block that gives you two hours of free parking.

Being a pipe man myself, I was ASTOUNDED at the selection of quality pipes they carry. Not just machine made but handmade as well. A pipe smokers dream. Also, the cigar selection was diverse. Anytime Im in the mood for a cigar, they always have what Im looking for. The pipe tobacco is also diverse. Everything from pure aromatic to staunch English and everything in between. I personally love the aromatic English tobacco. I live 40 minutes away and let me tell you, its worth the drive.

The best tobacco shop I’ve been to. Not to mention my favorite pipe tobacco is their house blend “White Russian.” I stock up every time in down in Houston. The guys who work here are great, very friendly and knowledgeable. If you’re around the area, definitely stop in!

Have to say 5 stars all around from the shop itself to the customer service. Im not an avid smoker so I went in not knowing anything and with a bunch of questions. I was able to ask the clerk everything from what kind of cigars should I get, how do I cut, how do I light it properly, etc. Each question was met with a genuine willingness to help and I am so appreciative for that. This my favorite place to get some of the best pipe tobacco in Houston. They have a Dr. Pepper blend thats to die for. I recently tried the white Russian as well and its exquisite.

The best selection of cigars, the good ones at a good price. The Briar Shoppe is 40 miles from my house but I find myself there a couple times a month. Great customer service by Jim, Dianne and Russ. They also have pipes, lots of pretty ones ( I dont know much about pipes).

I want to give 4.5 stars because a lot of the new staff is not as knowledgeable about tobacco or pipes. But at least they are nice, polite, and professional. Otherwise the older staff always gives great advice if you ask for it but give you space to browse. The store is also always clean and organized.

Nothing bad to say at all about The Briar Shoppe.... except, I wish it was closer to me. Just recently took up pipe smoking and received phenomenal assistance. The selection of pipes was excellent. At no time did I feel rushed or pressured. Every question was answered. Super friendly. Definitely have a new shop to go to....but still wish it was closer.

I was in town this week for work. I am from a small town in New Mexico and there are no Pipe/Tobacco/Cigar shops near me at all. I visited this shop to buy my first real pipe and get some good tobacco to go with it. A man named Ross helped me out and I tell you, it was the best shopping experience I have ever had in my life. He helped me for an hour. He figured out my taste in tobacco (English) and then picked me out a plethora of pipes to choose from based on my tobacco taste. I bought a pipe, tobacco and some other accessories and then he showed me how to pack and smoke my new purchase. It was a terrific experience. They now have a lifetime customer. Thank you Ross!

Fantastic service and selection. I entered never having smoked a pipe before and Ross walked me through the entire process with incredible insight. I could tell that this was a man that enjoyed smoking and genuinely wanted me to have a great experience. We even had a smoke together and he explained to me about the different types of pipes and tobacco. I definitely recommend and will be going back.

Ive been looking for a place to get high end rolling tobacco near me. After visiting several head shops and other similar establishments I was pleasantly surprised upon entering this gem. I was immediately greeted and shown to the several jars of fresh and delightful varieties of tobacco thats sold by the half ounce. After a short chat, I selected a couple and the owner weighed then out on a vintage scale. Needless to say I was blown away by the atmosphere, customer service, and the over all experience of this place. I look forward to visiting again and expanding my tobacco knowledge.

Stopped by last night right before closing and it was my first time @ The Briar. I love the Gurkha brand cigar and they had plenty to choose from. Without a doubt the finest tobacconist in the Houston area, especially for pipe aficionados. Service has always been top notch, the selections contain top notch standards and new items rotating regularly. Small smoking lounge but packed with friendly conversation. Also, they are dog friendly!

By far the most friendly cigar shop Ive been to. I entered with just the intention of looking around the store as it has always interested me when walking by. The owner, I assume, was incredibly welcoming and helpful. Ive been thinking about spending the money on a nicer cutter and when I saw something that appealed to me I asked him for his opinion about the product. He said that he didnt know much about the particular cutter, since they were the first time hes had them in his shop but heard great things. To ensure the quality of the cutter the owner grabbed a cigar and cut one for me! I was immediately sold. I dont run across that kind of customer service much anymore. Great place!

Ive been coming here for the past 6 years, and I absolutely love this place. The atmosphere is super friendly, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly as well, and all in all, it feels less like just another store, and more like going to an old relatives house that just so happens to sell tobacco. Im there 4 days a week, so youll see me quite often.Word to the wise: they no longer sell wine, despite what the search results tell you. They do have events every now and then where they serve beer and wine (Jim & Diane have connections to a few breweries) but they do not sell it. They have their Moderation Lounge which allows you to rent a humidified locker, and BYOB, plus you can buy a day pass for $5 and bring in your own booze.Theres a wide variety of people that shop here, so youre also bound to make make a few friends when you drop by.

Such an awesome experience for me as a tobacco pipe newbie. Received a great, warm welcome, and got a 20 minute education on tobaccos, and how to enjoy them. Kudos to the gentleman that spent the time to educate me.

The tobacco shop I was searching for! I always see these amazing tobacconists in tourist videos from other countries or major cities like New York or Chicago, and Ive always had this twinge of jealousy. That went away the moment I set foot in the Briar Shoppe. I was greeted by a glass case filled with ornate Meerschaum pipes, a solid wall of beautiful briars, an enormous collection of jarred, bulk tobaccos, and a glorious wall of tins. Yes, tins! My eyes fell on Balkan Sobranie, Maltese Falcon, Vintage Syrian, many other even rarer delights. Most tobacco shops I visit seem to think a few pouches of Captain Black constitute a pipe section, so this was like finding an oasis. Ross helped me out at the pipe counter and was very informative and friendly. Dont expect to pay online prices, but do expect to have an easier time locating some very interesting and rare blends to take home and smoke immediately. Cant do THAT online! Im looking forward to trying a few of their house blends and possibly even picking up one of those gorgeous Meerschaums! Thanks, Briar Shoppe!

Briar Shop is my go to for all my Pipe needs. The selection and variety are second to none. I moved to Houston from Memphis and have struggled to find my old pipe shop. Not anymore! Thanks to them I have grown my pipe collection a little more than I care to admit. Savinelli, Peterson, Ser Jacopo, and a variety of local carvers. Totally worth the look. A real gem…A place that can only be described by one word….Pleasurable… From the moment you walk through the door, to full service from the accommodating staff in the humidor (walk in), to expert knowledge on all things stogie related. This shoppe has been family run for over 4 decades and is the quintessential stopping point to get lost in a smokey haze of your favorite cigar. The front of the store has a dedicated smoking lounge with nice seating and a filter system. Midpoint in the store is another smoking lounge with another set of chairs and is a bit more secluded. The humidor is well stocked with smokes from around the world, ranging in price from a few dollars (5-7) to the higher end smokes for the discerning customer.

This place has been around for over 50 years. after meeting the staff, I understand why.

Came here once looking for snus because my usual shop was out and was not disappointed, they always have it in stock and not only that but the selection of cigars pipes and tobacco is amazing. I know it says in the description its a mom and pop and thats so true especially on the service end theyre engaging and actually try to get to know you and what you like and its extremely pleasant to do business here, as long as theyre open theyll have my business permanently

I really enjoyed the smoking lounge and Tanner was very friendly, helping me pick out a Briarworks pipe suggesting their house blend “Detective.” This is a real tobacconist with both pipes and cigars - no vapes. It was well worth me going out of my way to spend some money here.

Pretty good selection of cigars as well and the discount ones tend to have hidden gems. I found 4 Eiora robustos marked down to $5.

This is the best place in Houston for pipes. Jim and Terry are some of the nicest and most informative people. Large selection of pipes, inexpensive ($50 Savinelli) to extremely expensive ($700-$1000 Dunhill). Yeah, you can find some of their pipes cheaper ($15-$20) on the net, but I would gladly pay a little extra to have this store stay open in Houston for a long time to come. This is the only shop in Houston or anywhere I have ever seen over 50% dedicated to the enjoyment of pipe smoking. While we have 4 or 5 stores in Houston with a rack of basket pipes and maybe a small rack of pipe tobacco, this place is pipe heaven! While there is a small rack of basket pipes and Missouri Meerschaum cobs for smokers of all price ranges there is a selection of hundreds of petes, savs, nording, bc, dunhill and more. There is no equal even online in size. The selection of bulk tobacco is astounding and there are nearly 70 tins to choose from for a tin only buyer like myself. The employees if you can call them that are not cashiers interested in talking to each other instead of you, but enjoying a pipe when greeting you! They have an average but well rounded walk in humidor of cigars to choose from not saturated with any single brand. If you would like to sit out front and enjoy the rice village atmosphere they are quick to offer to bring out a table. If you are hungry, you can call an order in next door to torchys tacos and walk 20 feet to pick up when its ready. Cold canned soft drinks are already ready in store. If you dont know what you want, you can buy a bowl and enjoy it in front of the tv in the lounge. While a few other stores offer to let you sample a bowl, I havent found another with bulk versions of tinned tobacco available nor anywhere near the selection to try. If youve never tried a pipe and feel overwhelmed by the idea, stop by and let them know. They will help you get started. The world is a lot bigger than just a cigar if you want to enjoy a great smoke.
