True craftsmanship and pride in their product. Beautiful, hip place on the old Fort Ben. They deliver a hand crafted, tasty product. Service was slow. And they were hard pressed to offer a refill of ice tea. I had half a Vonnegut with the in-house made chips--very tasty and very awesome. The bread was fresh made and flavorful and also noted the tea was good. The downside is that this somehow turned into a $17 lunch--for haldf a sandwich and a handful of chips. Many of my coworkers had full sandwiches which came to almost $20 including tip. BTW, the half was plenty for lunch. Bottomline: quaint place was great custom crafted food that is a bit pricey in the end.
The coffee was amazing and they have the best gluten-free focaccia bread that they make there for the sandwiches! Highly recommend.
Really cool atmosphere!Like hanging out in a cozy living room, surrounded by books and live music.Ordered the Blackdog Oktoberfest, delicious.
Such a cute local bakery and sandwich shop we discovered through Yelp. Menu is online. Staff is super friendly and helpful. They are also taking precautions to protect their staff and customers from transmitting COVID-19. Fabulous food and great atmosphere. We will be back next time we are traveling through.
This place never disappoints. Great coffee, great food, and ample room to work and read. They also have ample outdoor seating. This is my new go to spot.
Vibes were immaculate. Really cool mix of old and new architecture. Really creative and unique menu. Super friendly, welcoming, and helpful staff. Although a breakfast sandwich and coffee was $15, but understandable for a small business. Will visit here again!!
Great coffee, amazing salad with freshly grated cheese, great dressing served with yummy bread! Amazing atmosphere!
A Portland coffee shop NOT a Seattle one! I love me a grungy coffee shop with delicious food
In my opinion easily the best all around cafe in Indy. Incredible food, coffee (beans also), atmosphere, and service. What more can you ask for? I literally get excited to go here. You won’t be disappointed.
Fantastic breakfast and lunch options. Staff is friendly and every item is friggin delicious
Do you like bread? Coffee? Go here. Stay here, if youd like.
Excellent experience. Fresh bread with an awesome blend of flavors. I definitely Diamond of Indy!!
Stopped by for lunch last weekend. What a cute place and fun to browse the books while eating. I had the Vonnegut sandwich with chips and a biscotti which were both very good! I think they were doing some construction and it is a bit hard to find tucked into a brick building, but worth it! We enjoyed walking around the neighborhood afterwards also. We will be back!
Great food, cozy atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor seating.
Great food good coffee, great atmosphere. I was visiting out of town and the staff were super welcoming and helpful. Place was super clean and they are adhering to COVID guidelines
Cool vibe. Good food. Great music (rock alternative). Expensive for a deli sandwhich and chips.
Very chill atmosphere workers wear masks and are always courteous.
Delicious breakfast! Friendly service. Well be back soon!
Great atmosphere and delicious food
Simple, tasty and very warm and welcoming staff members, I will be back!
The sandwiches and coffee are delicious and the employees are very friendly!
Porter Books & Bread is seriously the best place to eat in all of Indy. Wil and Neil are the best, and they come up with some awesome soups and sandwiches (and they even let us get creative with our create-your-own burgers). Also as weird as it may sound, I dont think Ive ever had a better tasting tomato on a sandwich than here! Simply put, theres no place that compares to PB&Bs atmosphere, service, and quality of food.
Great local cafe
I frequently came here while attending classes at the nearby Ivy Tech campus during fall term, 2019. I love the atmosphere and the folks who run the place. They are very friendly and laidback, play great music and the food and drinks are delicious! This was a great place to sit and study for hours, preparing for my anatomy and physiology exams. I finished my class with an A. Your coffee shop helped me get my good grades, thanks you guys. 😁
The very relaxed vibe, great coffee, and lots of well-spaced, comfortable seating indoors and outdoors made this a fun place for me to visit recently!
Cant imagine giving less than a 5 star. Neat place with some of the best food anywhere, and reasonably priced. We must support places like this to keep them thriving, it is a gem.
Porter has such a welcoming environment and a great staff (and coffee!!!) ! I needed a place to work while in Indy for the day and I couldnt have chosen a better coffee shop.
I love Porters!!! Their coffee is so good! But Ive been told I have very specific tastes in coffee. I prefer when it taste like coffee and not sugary water!! If you have similar tastes youll appreciate their espresso drinks. They also have oat milk as their non dairy milk option (which is, in my humble opinion the superior non dairy milk). Their sandwiches are also bomb!! And they have broad ripple chips for their sides and those are always amazing! Porters is the perfect study place for me and my friends.
1st time visit for a sisters lunch. Loved it. We will be going back soon.
Porter Books and Bread is one of my happy places. I love to get a coffee with one of their breakfast sandwiches on gluten free bread. Then I sink into a cozy couch and read or chat with a friend. Highly recommend!
This is a super cozy spot with friendly owners and staff. Great coffee that they roast themselves. Super tasty baked goods. BONUS: They do a lot to support local writers and artists.
The food is good, though the menu is limited. Everything tasted fresh and boasts of being locally sourced. Cozy atmosphere and books for the perusing. Fun way to spend a couple hours.
Great drinks. Friendly staff. Very homey and chill environment. Perfect place to enjoy an afternoon drink and read.
Love this place. Cozy. Indoor and outdoor seating. Owners/staff are passionate about serving great food and even better coffee! The Dumas is my fav sandwich while hubs loves the Twain. Nitro cold brew is kicking. Their Jeckyl and Hyde coffee is seriously my fav.
Loved the vibe! Very mom and pop which I loved! Decently priced. The Twain grilled cheese was beyond awesome! Loved the jalapenos in it. I would definitely get it again and I look forward to trying more of their samdwiches. Also had the sweet tea, it could use a touch more sugar but still really good.
Found this place via Google and the reviews were on point. Great coffee/espresso and solid food menu. Tucked away in Ft. Ben, but definitely worth seeking out. Pretty cool place to hang out as well to grab a good read and chill.
Very cool place for coffee or a sandwich. Relaxing atmosphere surrounded by books, friendly service, very fresh and delicious food. The nitro cold brew coffee is fantastic! The menu is not very big, but their unique sandwiches are totally worth checking out, or build your own to meet you tastes. Go in expecting to spend a bit more than at a typical franchise restaurant.
I live in Broad Ripple (work on the east side) and will come here for lunch on the weekends just because it’s so great. Fresh, delicious food every time and an outstanding environment. Very peaceful! Plus, they always have the best music playing. It’s never the same thing, which I love. A great Eastside gem.
We were driving around and we found this place through Google and decided to try it out. It’s kind of hidden, but it is more like hidden treasure after we tried it! They offer great salads and sandwiches along with coffee and tea. Our food was fantastic and the service was excellent! I would highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a relaxing, casual environment. 😊
This place is so cute! As someone who is particular about the quality of my coffee, I highly recommend stopping by. Retro decor, cozy, corner bookstore feel, with amazing bread baked on site every day and the owner roasts the coffee. As a mom of small kids, the spiral staircase kinda freaks me out a little, but the kids found some games upstairs that they were more interested in than the stairs. (Phew!) The food is delicious and the staff are lovely people!!
Amazing location & ambience. They have a selection of both warm and cold breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. They source as many ingredients as possible locally, and use very unique and high quality meats and cheeses. Their baked goods are soft and delicious; definitely the best scones Ive ever come across! They also roast their own coffee beans. The register is in the lower level, so head there first. It is wheelchair accessible, and its easier to park in the back. A must-see Fort Ben treasure!
Couldnt find this place. Maps kept changing directions, sending me the wrong way down one way streets. I ended up going to Starbucks😭😭
Just recently discovered this place, after looking for a nice study spot... I love it here! Food and coffee is delicious & it’s a great environment for those who want to get some studying done!!
Best place in the city for breakfast or lunch in my opinion. You can tell they take the quality of food very serious. They go above and beyond to make sure everything is fresh and locally sourced. They roast there own coffee on site. How cool is that?! Im not one to buy restaurant t-shirt but they have an awesome selection with very unique designs.
Good food. I recommend the milton
Stopped by Porter Books and Bread on a rainy Friday morning and it turned my entire day around. This place hits the nail on the head for relaxing and cozy while providing great food and coffee. What I was most impressed with was the details in the food, beverages and decor. Every aspect of the place goes above and beyond. The bread is freshly made and we ended up grabbing some on the way out to include in our dinner for the night. After deciding that I would be back because it is the perfect place to grab lunch after a Hike at ft. Ben, I was lucky enough to attend a conference which was catered by Porter, Books and Bread. I would 100% recommend them for a great lunch/breakfast and catering. Super impressed, cannot wait to go back.We have had the Austen, Vonnegut, and Dante sandwiches, would get any of them again.Great owners, great books and the best bread. A must visit, for sure.
Quaint little sandwich/cafe/bistro. I had the dante, very good. Hint: half is probably enough. The coffee is fabulous. Who ever is behind the buying and roasting knows what theyre doing. I give this little shop with an old look and feel my highest rating: IMPRESSIVE!
This is definitely one of my all time favorite coffee shops, great atmosphere, amazing coffee, delectable food. All around a good place to hang out, do work, drink coffee.
My son and I enjoyed our 1st visit to Porter Books and Bread. Our coffee was absolutely delicious and served in metal mugs. The ambiance and surroundings were cozy and inviting in the historic former barracks of Ft Ben. The staff were friendly, upbeat, welcoming, & knowlegeable. We liked our delicious fruit scone and coffee cake muffin, too! We will definitely become regulars!Open Sundays until 6 PM!!
Really cool place to go for coffee lunch and books. The menu looks fantastic. I will definitely go back again.
Great sandwiches and coffee!
Absolutely fantastic coffees in a great atmosphere. Dont let the location fool you: Google maps will correctly show you the way. We got to have the ends of their fresh biscotti while still warm, and I have to say it may be the best Ive ever had. The breads are made in house and the coffee is roasted in 5lb batches so everything is fresh. Also, as a result, the whole place smells like coffee and baking bread-- how can you go wrong? Ill definitely be back when Im in the area.
I love this place. The food and coffee is delicious. They play great music and I really enjoy the vibe.
Old books and fresh sandwiches! This is a bibliophiles dream cafe.
I always like independent local businesses. Visited Porters this afternoon and could not have been more pleased. Loved the atmosphere (it reminded me very much of places I used to hang out in at college). The staff was friendly and efficient. The food was very good and reasonably priced. If supporting local business, great service, and tasty food is important to you, be sure to stop by!
Had one of the best cups of coffee I have had in a long time. Great comfortable atmosphere. The staff made you feel at home. Highly recommend!
If its atmosphere that draws you to a coffee shop, this is the place to go. This dual level cafe/lounge was just a breath of fresh air compared to the crowded and annoying chain coffee shops. I was impressed that their default coffee is French pressed. Nice touch.
Brilliant little hidden gem. Wonderful coffee and service. The cinnamon brioche is outstanding. When in Lawrence, this is a must!
Great atmosphere. great food, great place to need for quiet time to either read a book what to put in work if you on a deadline. I like that the owner has a listening ear to the customers and is willing to try something new for the taste buds of the customers.
This place is amazing; dont even think about... you have to stop here. Delicious local coffees (I love the french press and cold brew), the sandwiches are to die for (doesnt even matter which one, they are all good), and the bread and scones are worth a trip all by themselves. And they have used books!!! Im pretty sure this is what heaven looks like :-)Everything they use to package a to-go order is either compostable or recyclable, which is awesome! I really appreciate that my to-go order doesnt generate a bunch of foam and plastic waste.
Cutest coffee shop ever. Books & art everywhere.I do have a question for the owner. On my last visit i was getting a glass of water and I saw your This is Water sign. Is this a nod to David Foster Wallace? Because if so thank you! You reminded me that this is water, this is water.
I love the atmosphere and sandwiches at this place. Perfect for breakfast or lunch, probably not dinner. The owners are super nice. The coffee and freshly made pastries are delicious. Its great for the neighborhood and a good place to hang out if you work from home or study at Ivy Tech. Its definitely the best place in this area where you can have the NY coffee shop experience.
Porter is such a gem in Lawrence - absolutely delicious food (crumbled bacon on a bagel? Why yes, please!) and the perfect place to work or simply talk with friends. Highly recommend anyone popping by and seeing what theyre about. The macaroons alone will have you coming back.
Cozy, welcoming atmosphere and books on the shelves. Perfection. I had everything bagel, cream cheese and macaroon. My husband had a cinnamon roll. We both had coffee. Everything was fresh and delicious!! Thank you for a relaxing place.
THIS PLACE MAKES ME SO HAPPY. Im sad that I no longer work close enough to walk there many too many times a week. Its a great environment to study or work in, and the staff is quick and friendly. My favorite sandwich is the Dante, with the Austen a close second. Their macaroons and biscotti are to die for.
Great food & atmosphere. We got our food quickly which is a huge plus during lunch!
I love this hidden gem! I always get iced tea when Im here. I really like the atmosphere and the location is really great. I love supporting little locally owned shops.
My new favorite place in Indy! The first thing you notice when you walk in is how cool the place looks - exposed brick, spiral staircase, and bookshelves galore. The atmosphere is super chill, and the sandwiches are top notch. Im so glad we discovered this place! Cant wait to go back.
Wonderful coffee, food, atmosphere and a lovely, friendly staff. I love coming here to study.
Food is great. It is fresh and good sized meals. Love the cafe laid back environment. Great customer service!
Lots of parking in the back. Very tasty sandwiches. Nice experience.
Amazing sandwiches. Great coffee. Very cool place!
I like the food and atmosphere at Porter Books and Bread. It is great that we still have little coffee shops like this one here in town. The Hummus is absolutely incredible too. The only thing that keeps me from coming in more is that the staff doesnt seem overly friendly or engaging. I always feel like maybe I bother them by coming in. Otherwise, Id go more often for sure. It is also a very clean place. They sell some local art, have tons of book, plenty of seating and its a great historic building. Bathrooms are clean.
This place is awesome. Great coffee, cozy seating, super cool vibe inside. Feels like a hidden gem of the area, definitely check it out!
Great space and massice sandwiches. Love the feel. Treatment for my Pacific Northwest homesickness. Love the vibes.
Industrial, warm interior with eclectic decor and art for sale. Good coffee and food. Used books, loads of James Patterson. $10 for a used JP book and $4 and $6 for used, older print general pbacks seemed a little on the high side. I read the reviews of friendly service, so maybe today was an off day. Though the couple kissed a few times, to the customers, the entire staff seemed generally dismissive, disinterested and disengaged. Will visit again as it is a lovely atmosphere with good food and locally owned, Ill just prepare myself to feel as though we are being a bother to the staff.
Porter is my favorite coffee shop in Indy. Warm cozy atmosphere paired with some of the best coffee and food in town. Local local local.
Freshly roasted-in-house coffee! Freshly baked bread and other baked goods! Quality meats and cheeses combined with said breads for a unique & delicious breakfast/lunch menu! SPIRAL STAIRCASE! Need I say more?
Food was good and quick. Perfect for a 1 hour only lunch spot.
Quaint library bookstore type feel with tables and comfy couches for sipping a cup or a business meeting. A little tricky to find for first timers.
Great coffee shop. They recently started roasting their own coffee which is really good. Alongside this their food is really good and they constantly keep expanding their menu. Everyone who works there is supper friendly which makes it a great place to stay and relax and work or just hangout and enjoy their coffee and food.
Porter is by far my favorite coffeeshop in Indianapolis. Their attention to detail and creative literary theme is spot on. And their products are fresh and locally sourced from Indiana. Their fresh coffee roasted in house is delicious and their service is always phenomenal and personable. And of course their fresh-baked goods are fantastic, especially their scones!
Neat little place with interesting concept. Good coffee and snack foods. Only place I have ever been to that offered coffee on nitro pour...that is a great offering. Not the best place to take kids (we stopped in after a picnic and walk) as there are lots of things for them to get into and the spiral staircase is a bit of a scare. Overall, cool place.
Love this place! Its very unique and has great coffee!
The coffee is top class. Add to that excellent service and atmosphere together with great chips and sandwiches. Relaxing and comfortable interior.
Tried the “Dumas sandwich” for the first time today - loved it !! I will be going back ... oh the chips are very delicious 🤗 .., they were inhaled first!! A very neat / clean location.
What a gem! No espresso yet, but 3 brews from local roaster, plus 2 cold brews with one on NITRO (which makes it creamy) awesome decor, polished cement, exposed brick and stone, reclaimed wood floor, found object furniture... Im from Seattle, and this place would be welcomed into our coffee community. Excited to come back some day, and try espresso.
Great place, food and people! Check them out if you get a chance!
Fresh ingredients. Homemade breads. Good friendly service. Great lunch spot
Love this place, just discovered them a few months ago. Great food, coffee and customer service.
Great ambiance! Had a latte, cinnamon roll muffin, and sandwich. Was not disappointed.
A gem of a find on the Indy Northeast side. I have spent hours and days here getting work done away from a very chatty toddler. Excellent food, (which they are alway trying to hone and improve on), great coffee, friendly (but not overbearing) staff, fun atmosphere, and really awesome music selection! Come to work independently, grab lunch with friends, or just enjoy a good cup of coffee!
