I felt really taken care of at Cousins. Their communication is top notch and transparent. They send videos of the work they’ve done and if they find any other work they could potentially do, they send a link for you to approve or deny services with a breakdown of price. That hasn’t always been the case with mechanics I’ve had in the past that go ahead and do the extra work without consent and I’ve ended up with a bigger bill than expected or budgeted, so it was really refreshing having this experience with Cousins. And since most communication is done through text, the process was smooth and efficient. Very happy with the service.

After visiting family for a week in Massachusetts I saw the “check engine light” go on when I was about to make a 5 hour drive back to New York on a Sunday. I stayed an extra night instead and arranged to come in to Cousins first thing Monday morning. This was the first time I ever saw this warning on my car and I didn’t want to take the risk of driving. Luckily it was something minor and was diagnosed and fixed easily and quickly. Service was professional, friendly and fast. It was such a relief. I highly recommend. Thanks to AAA I discovered this wonderful mechanic shop and received a 10% discount. No wonder they have perfect five star reviews!!

Im new to Ipswich and, as folks know, finding a trusted auto mechanic/garage is a crucial transition issue! I believe Ive found my Ipswich mechanics! I was very pleased with the transparent approach to work that needed to be done (sending a video that detailed and explained the issues), the good communication before, during, and after work, the ease of scheduling an appointment, and their overall friendly and courteous behavior. They even protect the inside of your car from dirt, grease, etc. My car felt great after the work!

A/C died in the middle of a heat wave! I was amazed that I was able to get an appointment in a few days. Online appointment was fairly easy and got a confirmation the next morning.I generally like to walk around the car with the service tech. But I’m pretty busy these days. So the video of the vehicle health check was the next best thing. Maybe even better sine I could replay it if I missed something.Quick and friendly text messages and online estimate were really convenient. I was able to do research on the recommended service and then choose to accept or decline. No stressful phone call where I felt like I had to make a decision on the spot.The recommended services were explained clearly in the video and on the estimate. The prices were also reasonable.Nate (in person), Analise (on the phone and text), and Andrew (on video) all made it a very friendly and personable experience.When I picked up the car the a/c was working great and I had piece of mind that everything else was running smoothly. Inside all the touch points were wrapped and clean.I certainly did not expect the superb digital customer experience from a neighborhood shop. Replaced an engine mount and performed an oil change as requested. Perfect work on the engine mount - went from a lot of cabin noise and jerky shifting to no noise at all and smooth shifts. I brought my car in for an oil change and had a check engine light on I wanted taken care of. I got a full detailed video of what Anthony was checking and I was very impressed. I already knew the code error for the service engine light had to do with an EVap leak because I had a fellow mechanic check it out for FREE. I don’t normally return to places that charge A fee to hook their code reading device up to the car that takes 30 seconds. I spoke with Anthony and he recommended I had a smoke test done to try to find the leak. Unfortunately Anthony was unable to find the leak but that still cost $150. I had a few old Belts repaired and all together it was around $500. For an oil change, a few new Belts And then not being able to find the leak but still charging me 150 was troubling but hey it was my first time here. (2nd experience) I recently needed a new high beam light and back plate light to pass my inspection. A mechanic I’ve known for years quoted me $200 for a bracket and lights for the back plate.Crazy! So I went over to cousins again and this time I dealt with Nate who just like Anthony was very professional, friendly and informative. I explained what I wanted him to look at and fix and for $40 he was able to get my back plate light up to code and also Had the car back to me the next day. He gave me quotes on a few other issues I needed checked out that a fellow had mechanic pointed out to me as well. This reassured me that at Cousins they care and arent just looking for add on sales, especially after Anthony said if it was his own vehicle he would hold off for now. A professional atmosphere with a friendly, knowledgeable staff who care about your needs is how I would describe COUSINS. I will be using Cousins for my next auto repair needs. Thank you Nate!

My 2009 Subaru Legacy was leaking more oil than I could put in it. Cousins quickly diagnosed it as a leaking head gasket.Nate recommended I do my timing belt and water pump as they needed to come off to do the gaskets. My first time at Cousins this morning and I must say that my experience there was absolutely wonderful! I needed help replacing a headlight bulb, which I tried replacing myself and was unsuccessful. I googled an auto repair shop near me and fortunately for me I discovered Cousins. Britney answered the phone when I called and she was very pleasant and helpful. I explained to her my issue and she said, “Come on down I’ll have someone take a look at it.” When I arrived she was there in the office with a welcoming smile. Anthony (mechanic) came out fairly quickly and got right to the matter at hand and solved my headlight bulb problem. Yeah!!! Very honest and trust worthy mechanic

Cousins automotive was amazing! They were friendly, professional, and honest. This will be where i take my car for any major work from now on. I was very impressed by the customer service. They treat the customers with respect and courtesy.

I am incredibly grateful to Nate for squeezing my car into a busy schedule. My brake fluid was leaking out through a bad caliper. I left the car on Sunday and it was ready Tuesday. You can hardly expect better turnaround for an unexpected repair. So why three stars?$150 AN HOUR! for labor. A 2020 survey by Car MD of car repair labor rates in Massachusetts lists an average of $130. Thats still higher than the prevailing rate in Ipswich. The exceptionally superb mechanic I usually take my three VW diesels to charges $100. And he is the best Ive ever seen.Nate said his rate is $150 AN HOUR! because his is a high end shop and his crews knowledge and training are worth it. Of the other area mechanics, there are just two Id trust: New Meadows Service and Johns Auto and Tire.Are they high end? I dont know how to define that. But the numerous repairs Ive had done at both always fixed the problem for good and I was satisfied. And their rates are not $150 AN HOUR!I also had two loose metal hangers on the muffler welded on. Invoice said it took one hour at $150 AN HOUR! Ive done welding and it likely took about half that. But there was no reduction on the rate.Like many shops do, Cousins charges an unexplained “Fee” on the invoice. This is often said to be for supplies and materials used. Ripoff! Nickel and diming! A restaurant doesn’t charge extra for the gas its stove uses. They roll it into the menu prices. Why do mechanics think this fraudulent practice is acceptable? It’s not. It’s dishonest. If they’re really losing money they need to raise their prices. Except here, where $150 AN HOUR! ought to include this.Parts markups are part of having a car fixed and I recognize that this is how mechanics earn a living. Fair enough. But Nate charged me $175 for a new NAPA caliper, where it sells retail for $93. Lets say wholesale price is 20 percent less, that means it cost him around $72. So is $103 a fair markup? Definitely not. I can see marking it up by 60 percent or so but not this much.Again, Im very thankful for the quick and quality service I got here. But Im not going back. Nate simply has a higher estimation of what his shop time is worth vs: reality. And definitely compared with other area shops.Addendum: I strongly admire Nate for giving such a detailed response. Well reasoned. But ultimately misguided.Every good auto mechanic invests in expensive tools, keeps current with changing technology and hires competent staff. Not all local mechanics know what they’re doing. I know one who couldn’t change a light bulb properly in my car.Most customers could easily get by without a video of their vehicle’s issues and without Lyft rides. If you gave customers a choice between using those services or paying a lower rate, most would choose to pay less. To actually justify $150/hour you’d need to serve customers filet mignon and fine wine during their full body massage.Consider these points:- This isn’t Beverly Hills, it’s Ipswich.- There are other local shops whose work quality equals yours but charge less.- Just as you don’t need to be a chef to know what a poor meal is, you don’t need be an auto mechanic to know when you’re being overcharged.- There’s a deadly pandemic happening and many have lost their jobs and exhausted their savings. But they still may need to get their cars fixed.The labor rate at Cousins is still exorbitantly high given the local demographics and going rate. Nate has every right to place high value on his services, unrealistic as it may be.

I had him do the work and I am Glad he found the problem and called me on it. Great experience all the way around. and came in less than the quoted price. Butch certainly knew what he was doing when he asked Nate to take over Butchs Auto when he retired. As a wheelchair driver, my conversion van is a lifeline to independence and Nate is already providing me the type of excellent service and accommodation I depended on. My first visit with Nate was to repair the arm control to my wheelchair which had me stuck not being to lock in directly behind the steering wheel. He and Anthony had it repaired in just a short time and I was on my way after Stephanie scheduled a date for an oil change and tire rotation. I will continue to have Cousins do all my future van work and to pass his name onto friends and acquaintances. Great team!!

Great service, took my hylander in for leaking lines on power steering. They had to replace the power steering box and the lines due to our old vehicle. They also did a four wheel alignment to ensure everything was good. They did a great job and completed the job ahead of schedule. Great service! Excellent communications. Our 2008 Honda Odyssey seemed at deaths door during Crane Beach visit with our family from Boston. Flashing warning lights on the dash and halting stuttering concerning engine sounds and concerning feel. Found Cousins via Google Maps and limped the car there. Filled out a form and dropped it with a key in the box. Fearing the worst. Walked back to commuter rail stop and took train home to Boston. Got updates Monday morning via text and online. I found Cousins Automotive when I posted a query on Facebook looking for a good mechanic in the Ipswich area to fix my cars A/C. Not only did a number of people recommend Nate at Cousins, but I heard from Nate himself offering to take a look at it. Nate came to my home, diagnosed the problem, and after I agreed to the work he ordered the part I needed and it was done the next morning. The entire experience was great, and I would not hesitate to recommend Nate, or use him again for future work!

Great work by Cousins Auto! They found the source of my shaking car (incorrectly balanced tires from a source in Beverly that should have known better), fixed my muffler. Nate lets me know what to worry about, and what can wait.He has a muffler machine - muffler pipes can be widened, or can be bent to the appropriate angle. Keep it in mind!Friendly and knowledgeable, too!
