Love this local gem! The staff are always so knowledgeable, and one woman went out of her way to ask my daughter what her favorite types of books are and showed us some options. They even gift wrapped a set of books for me. Sure there are lower priced books all sorts of places, yet this store is very intentional about its offerings, has author-signed copies, has a diverse and inclusive collection and is just a pleasure to be in.

Visiting this independent book store is like dropping in on old friends. There is a friendly atmosphere, the staff are so very helpful and knowledgeable. I just love the hand written post it notes giving an in site into books staff had read and recommended. What a joyous experience.

Amazing! Ive reached out to them for book recommendations for my nieces (under 5 yrs) and they always hit it out of the park! The kids love the books and the parents love re-reading them. Its fantastic to be able to talk with knowledgeable staff who can give unique book recommendations!

One of my favorite bookstores ever! I am a huge book nut, so I always walk out of there with at least one or two books. I would particularly recommend their fiction section. Dont know what to buy? The employees are super nice and helpful and will give you in-depth summaries of almost every book. Would recommend!

I first went in this store late last year and was quite impressed. As its name suggests, mystery is the largest genre on offer but they have offerings from others as well. I found my new favorite book series here and recently picked up a staff-suggested non-fiction book as well. Everyone Ive interacted with has been responsive and very helpful both before and during the changes forced by the current pandemic.

Mystery to Me is my favorite bookstore in Madison! I’ve attended two of their book signings and they were both wonderfully organized events. Every single person that works there is very helpful and knowledgeable. If they don’t happen to have what you’re looking for, they will get in for you very quickly. Best bookstore in Madison! Not only do they sell more than mysteries, they do it with such knowledge and passion. They handle almost any custom order (as long as they know a person). I love stopping in and almost always end up taking more home than I planned on.

Wonderful selection of curated mysteries with extremely knowledgeable staff. There are many excellent author events. Recently I attended the Cara Black reading, where a cake was served for the sixth anniversary of the shop was celebrated.

Phenomenal bookstore worth a visit on Monroe Street. The staff is helpful, informative, and fun to talk to. Bought a book in person and ordered the sequel that wasnt in stock (with no extra charge for ordering)! Really excited to visit again!

Really well-curated selection of mysteries. Wont have everything, but seems to lean a bit more toward literary mysteries over serials, which worked for me. Helpful staff for making recommendations!Other strong sections include gift books and novelties, interesting non-fiction, youth and childrens lit. Very very small history section, also small but nicely chosen selection of poetry.Due to the heavy emphasis on mystery and youth & childrens lit, this bookshop may not appeal to all, but what they focus on, they do very well and with a lot of passion -- they even have a podcast, a newsletter, and live readings/signings. As a former bookseller it was a lovely experience to walk into a store where staff were so actively engaging with customers and making thoughtful recommendations. Will definitely visit the next time Im in town!

A truly fantastic bookstore that offers more! As a writer its a rich treasure chest of ideas from books and staff, and even their great displays! As a reader, I cant believe the wonderful non-mystery and mystery books theyve introduced me to. They have a great & fun to explore childrens book section. The store hasnt had difficulty ordering books for me and they arrive quickly. I look forward to the unique, well-known and some lesser known authors who have presented here. A classy place that knows how to have fun!

Stopped in for the first time last night (a couple weeks before Christmas) to look for some books for my young nieces. The ladies there took a lot of time and great interest in helping me find a few choices. I ended up getting all three. They had great young readers section.A great little shop!

What a gem in Madison. Great neighborhood and JoAnn, the owner, is knowledgeable and helpful. The kids corner is cozy and well stocked. Great place to meet authors!

In one trip we filled the reading needs of family from 5 to 80. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and friendly. They found a dinosaur book that the 5 year old is more interested in than his tablet, the 80 year old got a book from a local author and 2 best sellers.

I never knew book catalogs could come in human form until I visited this bookstore. I asked for a variety of books for vastly different friends of mine and each book they suggested was a hit with the recipient. For example, I asked for a book for someone who had loved Harry Potter as a child but had recently been on a Stephen King kick, and they suggested a book so perfect I actually got multiple thank you cards. If youre curious, they suggested City of Broken Magic by Mirah Bolender.Additionally, Mystery to Me cultivates an environment of open-mindedness and warmth. All are welcome and it shows. The only drawback is that, like a favorite armchair left in the sun, being in the store can be comfortable to the point that you lose track of time.
