Went there today for Venezuelan food and it was great and super authentic! Their tequeños (Venezuelan cheese sticks) were to die for, the patacón (Venezuelan fried plantain sandwich) was huge and so good! And if you want to try a Venezuelan street style burger, this is your spot.Management at this establishment changed, it’s family owned now and they’re starting out with very few workers and doing their best. People who have been coming here for years need to realize that and chill. I for once find it refreshing to see more diversity on state st. Go and expand your palate :)
I’m sosososo happy this place re-opened — love the vibe & location. Always been fan of Sunroom, so I’m surprised to say I actually like the food better w/ the new owner…the chef is FANTASTIC. Great for a gameday/weekend brunch or casual breakfast. Simple, chill, inexpensive & quick as you want it to be. Really can’t beat this place, 1000% recommend.
Sunroom serves my absolute favorite omelettes. I’ve been waiting for a whole year to come back and order one! Now I’m sitting in the sun room looking out the window over state street, eating my custom made omelette. Order has been restored to my life. Service is amazing as well.
This place seems to be under newer management and is now decidedly terrible (though previously was better!). Went for breakfast foods. Zero percent was edible. Burnt pancakes, overcooked eggs, bad potatoes and bacon. Avoid it!
This place has taken a hard nosedive in quality since reopening, which is a bummer. Their hash browns are the preformed, deep fried McDonalds kind. The over easy eggs came out hard and the toast seemed more microwaved than toasted. Staff was nice but the food was bad all around. You can get more, better food for much less somewhere like The Curve (or Shortstack if youre set on paying the State St. tax).
I hate giving bad reviews but Im hoping that this can be used as constructive criticism. We waited for almost 45 minutes before getting our drinks, my husband just had ice water while I was brought an orange juice, having ordered a mango smoothie. The mistake was corrected and the smoothie was good. Still no food. A few minutes later, the gentleman working the register and taking orders came over to our table and said they forgot what we ordered. Id noticed people arriving after we did were (very slowly) being served while we were still waiting. There was only one server, two people in the kitchen, and the cashier who also served when he could. We told him what we ordered and he apologized. 15 minutes later, my French toast arrived but my husbands order did not. Ten minutes later my husbands order came. He had ordered a ham and cheese omelette with a side of sausage. The omelette arrived and it was inedible. The sliced ham was cold and the shredded cheese was not melted at all. Plus they forgot his sausage. I suggested my husband take the omelette back up. The cashier told him they didnt realize he wanted the cheese melted. By that point, we had been there for an hour and a half. My husband told him to just forget it. He was not even offered a refund for his order. We like to see new places succeed. This place will not be in business long unless they make some serious changes.
Chicken Salad Sandwich is just shredded dry breast meat with mayo? Thats all? Id rather eat Wendys, sorry. Second story restaurants are notoriously hard to fill, and thats what you present? Not worth climbing the stair, Im afraid.
Laughably awful service. The staff were basically nonexistent / on their phones watching YouTube videos. I used to come here all the time for breakfast and lunch and loved the charm and service. I walked in this time and the place was dead quiet. No one there. No music. Only the sound of people chatting in the kitchen, while it took them over 30 minutes to make French toast (I repeat, I was the only customer there). I left honestly depressed at how bad the experience was, It almost felt like the wait staff wanted me to leave so they could go back to having fun in their empty restaurant. Weird weird vibe. Won’t be back.
Hey, I stopped today, for get a lunch 😋, and everything was really good. 👌, Service is getting better everyday, because I know they just open a couple weeks. Guys support them. ❤
Great breakfast scrambler, perfect pancakes, good people
Apparently there is new management at this restaurant due to COVID. This used to be a favorite spot for me and my partner to grab brunch on a weekend. Went today while visiting the city and was very disappointed. The customer service is non-existent, no wait staff or hostess like before. When ordering, it seemed like no one knew the menu. After we ordered, we sat down and waited 30 minutes for a sandwich and an omelette. There were maybe 10 people total in the restaurant while we waited. Someone from the kitchen was bringing 1 plate of food out at a time, almost like they were making one meal at a time. When we finally got our food, the sandwich was iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of lunch meat, and a couple slices of tomato. Unbelievable. The potatoes weren’t cooked, just warm and sopping in oil.We will not be back. Very disappointing that our once favorite brunch spot is gone.
I usually do not give bad reviews, but our experience here was atrocious. I had to order three times to find a menu item that was actually available and not out of stock in the kitchen. It took 20 minutes to be served our coffee (note, not an espresso beverage -- just black coffee), and an additional 40 mins to be served. Plus, the dishes all came out individually and at an incredibly slow pace. We were a party of three and each dish took so long to come out of the kitchen that the person who was served last had already finished their meal by the time the next persons dish arrived. Would recommend looking elsewhere for brunch.
I stopped in for a quick bite while moving and ended up really sick for my moving days. I have an allergy and asked for no dairy. Was given dairy and they insinuated that I was being picky when I asked for a refund. Do not go if you have an allergy or intolerance. Very unorganized staff. Waitress was very kind and apologetic, however. I really wanted to like this restaurant!
Amazing food and friendly staff! Perfect for breakfast or a low key brunch
I like to see new businesses in Madison succeed and as a Venezuelan I always want Venezuelan businesses to succeed. I hope that this is taken as constructive criticism to make the business better.I went there for dinner and tried an Arepa off their Venezuelan dinner menu. I was expecting the classic Venezuelan sandwich-esque meal, but instead I got a meal that seemed to come more from a classic Venezuelan street food vendor. A thin flat arepa piled up high with beef, lettuce, avocado, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, bacon, ketchup, Mayo, and cheese. My expectations aside, this meal just missed the mark in many aspects. The ingredients piled up high just became a messy mixture of all the ingredients (especially bad if you didn’t want any ketchup or Mayo). This is also frustrating because the taste of the beef was actually quite nice. The portion size was also excessive, a lot of food and varied ingredients that result in a hard to swallow $15 price tag. Overall the experience was really disappointing.I can’t speak to the brunch menu, but the Venezuelan menu left me not really wanting to come back. My suggestion to the new management: simplify the menu, bring the basic Venezuelan staples, bring the classic arepas (reina pepiada, pelua, domino), bring more empanadas, pabellón, etc. Also, make portions smaller and lower your prices accordingly. The new managers are incredibly nice and I’m rooting out for them. I hope to come back to a better restaurant.
One of my favorite spots on State Street especially for breakfast! Always try to stop whenever I get back to Madison.
I love the taste of food, every weekend I go with my family.
Very good they take a while but it is worth the wait the patacón and the tequeños are very good
Excellent service and the Food is amazingly fresh . I advice to try there burger is the best in town . Best venezuelan food in Madison.
The buttermilk pancakes here are absolutely incredible - and the omelettes are generously sized. A change to counter service makes sense for the space - we will be back again!
Venezuelan food is very good 100% recommended
Excellent service, delicious omelettes, what more could you ask for?
The brand new Venezuelan menu is fantastic! Things are a little slow as they have just reopened, but Im sure that will pick up soon.
I am pretty sure this place went under during covid and was bought out and reopened under totally different management, different cooks, etc. so please take that into consideration when reading older reviews (before July 2021).
I was really craving some pancakes, but wanted to be healthy too, so I went in for their whole wheat pancakes after hearing good things about them. Theyre definitely some of the best pancakes Ive ever had. I was skeptical about them at first since theyre not the classic buttermilk and healthy stuff isnt typically known to taste good, but trust me, theyre way better than any buttermilk pancakes out there. Sunroom also has a lower calorie vegetable oil spread instead of butter, so that makes it even better. Will definitely be going there the next time Im in Madison!
Excelent Venezuelan an American Food
Really good food! 👍
Good healthy food
So if its Monday morning in Madison and youre looking for breakfast on State Street, this is one of youre few options with Short Stack being closed. Cute little place, not super easy to find, upstairs overlooking the street. My breakfast sandwich was very good, but just not enough service to justify the price in my opinion.
I came into this Cafe thinking it would only take a few minutes granted the few people here, unfortunately I was mistaken it took over and hour to revive my dish. I think this is outrageous. Seriously
Tasty and quick food. Pleasant staff. Nice atmosphere with art for sale. Downside, 1 refill limit on coffee. Would recommend.
My friends and I got some chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes in addition to the lox scrambler. The pancakes were delicious and the lox scrambler was pretty good as well. Atmosphere is nice and cozy with a great view overlooking State St
A delicious and diverse menu. Tasty breakfast choices until 2. Salads, quiche, scones, desserts, and plenty of veggie/vegan choices as well. An excellent choice when going with a group - something for everyone. I dont hesitate to recommend... Will worth the walk up the stairs!
Fine for breakfast. quick. medium quality food. no music made me sad, i prefer something to help down out the crowd
Service fast and friendly. Food was great. I had the Thai stir fry with shrimp and my husband the chicken parmesan. Would recommend this restaurant.
I love Sunroom Cafe. The food is so inexpensive and so tasty. I work at a hotel and recommend this place to everyone. The huevos rancheros are so good here but you can’t go wrong with anything.
This place looks and feels divey, but it is fairly reasonable. I ordered a diet soda that was never refilled and the grilled chicken dinner. The mashed potatoes tasted like they from a box, but the curry sauce and chicken were well worth it.
Sunroom Cafe will always be one of my favorites. Great food, awesome atmosphere. My go-to is the tofu scramble. My only complaint is that they still use Styrofoam to-go boxes and I figured somewhere as hip as Sunroom wouldve phased something so polluting out and gone to a much better alternative. Same goes for the plastic bags they use for their to-gos. Otherwise, I love it there!
One of my favorites for breakfast!! They have awesome scones and muffins! Fresh!!
Always excellent food. Great variety. Hard working kitchen staff. Weekends are packed, but worth the wait!
Have been here about five times now, and it’s always the same experience. Overpriced food with small portions and rude staff. Not sure how they can get away with the serving very sub par food at premium prices. The owner is also very passive aggressive and will try and persuade you to leave when you’re barley finishing up your food!
Fair prices and good food! Never super busy so it’s easy to get a table. Service can be a bit slow but overall a nice place to eat. I recommend the french toast, they use homemade bread!
Food, drink and service is always amazing. Have been coming here over 10 years. Never a bad experience.
I love this place! We always grab brunch here when were in Madison. Great food and great options. Its usually crowded, so seating can take a few minutes but Ive never waited more than 10 and its worth it.
The counter service does not get the proper amount of training from the management and when its busy they’re pushed to the side by more experienced workers and not able to get practice. The owners (management) are grumpy and known to make fun of the customers. The food is okay but way overpriced, go to the grocery store and make what they make for half the cost.
Went there to eat brunch and was met with very good food and a wait staff that was handling the amount of customers well.I ordered banana pancakes -- which were delicious -- and a coffee. I noticed they sell all kinds of breakfast-like foods. They had dishes that are mexican-like to french. Their coffee was good and the place itself was quite nice.Only reason I did not give this place five stars was because I was expecting a more calm environment. The place is so lovely that it was packed to the brim with people making it hard to find a seat and get the morning ambience I look for in a brunch cafe.I Recommend a visit.
This quaint little cafe was exactly what I was looking for. Staff was very nice and there were many options including breakfast which seemed to be available all day! If I lived near here at all, I would certainly frequent this place.
Super Good! Amazingly Efficient getting the order in. Breakfast Burrito add sausage 💥💥💥
Always busy on the weekend (i.e. have to wait in line on the stairs up to the restaurant) but this place has excellent food. Only had breakfast or brunch here but decent-looking dinner menu. The avocado turkey omelet is delicious, the breakfast potatoes are bomb, great pancakes and the fruit and yogurt parfait is very good as well. Good coffee, fair prices. I like to think of this place as a hidden gem but it’s not really, it is however, a must-try.
Quality and flavorful foods. Options for people with most dietary restrictions and still tasty. Good place to study or just hang out with friends.
Very affordable, nice and casual, tasty and fresh. What more could you ask for? Had the Nova Lox, husband had the goat cheese and sun dried tomato omelet, and two Bloody Marys. Did not disappoint! Service was friendly and quick. Highly recommend!
Came here for breakfast.Very tasty food. Cozy environment.
While a little pricey for my taste, the biggest draw for the sunroom cafe is the atmosphere. The name couldnt be more accurate, sitting above State Street with the sun pouring through the windows creates an amazing atmosphere that always lifts my spirits. The food is good, with great selections for those with specific dietary needs. The the only issue I had was with a somewhat rude staff member, but that was a one time occurrence.
This is a great little hole-in-the-wall sort of cafe. The food and coffee are great. The breakfast burrito I had was cheap for its size and quality, and the roasted potatoes that came with it were done perfectly. If youre looking for a good, quick breakfast on State Street, check this place out.
This restaurant is a treasure!! Great food, relaxing atmosphere and wonderful service. I had the Turkey avocado omelette which was delicious! Definitely recommend!!
The coffee was bitter but the food and service were very good. Simple spot for a good breakfast.
Walked in and there was an obvious scent of marijuana as its part of a residential building. Seating was fairly good considering our group of 8. Ordered the garden salad which took a while, but I didnt mind since I had friends to visit with and it was pretty good. The bathroom was dark but other that was fine. The thing that got me a little mad was the automatic tip that was put on my receipt because of the party size. It wasnt the end of the world but I wish I was informed before getting the receipt. Atmosphere is a little cramped with staff sneaking behind you, but your not moving that much, so not an issue.
Great vegetarian options. Order at the counter and find a seat in the bright, cozy dining area. A really good value for breakfast, especially in Madison.
I have eaten here at least a dozen times. Excellent ticket times (consistently under 15min), decent service, good bloody Mary, top 10 best french toast Ive ever had. The one drawback would be the consistency on some of the food. Some times excellent sometimes not quite hitting the mark. But for a college town restaurant overall they more than meet the standard.
Great, cozy little brunch place. Overlooking State Street, the artwork and furniture definitely make you feel the sunroom vibe. The food was delicious and reasonably sized. Friendly service and good music.
Nice place, sunny and cozy. Can be a bit overcrowded around noon, but has quick service and great brunch and lunch options. Food is really good.
Was there midmorning and it was not busy so there was no wait for my tomato salsa and guacamole omelet. Happy with service, price, selection and the view. My breakfast date was happy with his black bean breakfast burrito. We were lucky to snag a table by the window which proved great for people watching 😀 Will go again.
Been coming here for 6 years; great food for an affordable price. I dont think theres anything on the menu over $9. Good for dates, family, and vegans!
Ive enjoyed Sunroom Cafe at least two dozen times over the past 5 years. It is by far the best breakfast restaurant on or near State Street, and excellent for lunch as well. Sunroom serves European-style local food menu including a wide range of excellent pancake, omelette, french toast, waffle plates, along with fruit and many delicious bakery and pastry items. For lunch there is many great salads, mediterranean plates, cold and hot sandwiches, and always two or three specials.Perhaps one place that Sunroom stands out most is its vegan, veggie, and gluten-free menu items, as they were out front of those movements and menu offers many excellent selections. As reference, one of my favorite lunch selections is the Tuna Melt with Avocado, and all of the scramblers are top-shelf.
Awesome! Very inclusa-Terian(I just made this up), you’ll find good food for all kinds of eaters. If you’re an introvert like me I’d suggest visiting right before noon or after 115 as this place is very popular, because it’s so awesome. Great prices healthy food, happy staff!
Very very very bad.
A favorite lunch spot tucked away above State Street. Yummy food and a good selection of beverages. Sunny, cheerful atmosphere.
Driving through Madison for the 1st time, we were looking for a place for breakfast/brunch. I had a spinach and bacon omlette which was served with spicy potatoes and greens and it was all delicious! The kids had pancakes and bacon which they ate every bite of, and one had a cheeseburger which was also said to be delicious.
Great food and fast service, different experience without a server (for a cafe). Nice setting.
Great ambiance, friendly staff. The spicy tofu scramble and hot chocolate were fantastic!
I went in for breakfast alone. I was seated right away, which was nice. They had about 2/3 of the dining room filled. I waited about 10 minutes to have my waitress come to my table. I ordered a drink and the two eggs, toast, and potatoes meal (one of the most basic items on the menu). It took about 25 minutes for the food to arrive to my table. The potatoes were DELICIOUS and the sour dough toast was toasted/buttered perfectly. The eggs, however, were lacking. I ordered my eggs medium and they came cooked to my liking, but they were covered in the black gunk from an overly dirty grill. The black stuff made the eggs taste awful. I waited awhile to tell my waitress and see about different eggs, but she was nowhere to be seen. I was in a hurry, so I ate and waited for my bill. I finished eating and waited almost 10 minutes before the waitress came back for the first time (with bill in hand). The prices were average. The waitress was friendly, but inattentive and basically left me alone with my less than satisfactory meal. The waiting times were horrendous, especially being a slower time.I really loved the potatoes, though!
Good food. Fair prices. Classic dinner atmosphere. Cheery.
The food and atmosphere is really nice and welcoming. The cafe is also pretty crowded even though its tucked away. The wait for your food is a little while because of the long line, but its worth it.
I asked for green tea, was given barely steeped tea. Every time I come here I am more disappointed, the servers are always kind though. Madison needs a better mom and pop near campus.
Great for a healthy, casual sit-down meal close to campus. Reasonably priced!
Wonderful food and great atmosphere in downtown Madison! Had a great time!
Walked into the cafe around 11:30a.m. and a Hostess will seat you sign was positioned upright on the left. Waited for about 10 minutes until we were told we were supposed to order at the counter. But, our food was great. I ordered the blueberry buttermilk pancakes (which I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend) and my boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito which he enjoyed very much. Our total was under $20...affordable!Overall great experience with the exception of the staff (who, may have just been too busy to direct us to the counter). We will be back!
Breakfast was awesome, service was great. Absolutely would go again!!!
Good food, well made, reasonable prices. Not five stars, because it was crazy busy on a Saturday.
Good food, reasonable prices and lots of vegetarian options
Funky second story cafe. Great lox. College atmosphere.
Great place, if you like 3 day old potatoes.
A very busy place! I got here around noon and there was a line to the door. Prices where a little expensive, $5 for pankcakes and $8 for most lunch sandwiches. They had a ton of options, which is great, but also stalled the line. Place was clean and well cared for.
Food was ok, I would expect more for the high price. Service was abysmal. The hostess doesnt use any system for keeping track of people waiting and seats people out order. She doesnt have any formal system and doesnt have a way to take down names.Be prepare for a long wait standing in a cold stairwell as she wasts time recounting groups multiple times. She turned people away for wanting to-go because they were busy (even though to-go is a faster options for guests).
Breakfast was really good! Had the breakfast burrito and hubby had the breakfast sandwich, big portions! But if you order the Bloody Mary they make it with beet juice! So if you dont like beets dont order. I found that out after they brought it to the table!
I did not enjoy the service at Sunroom today. My friend was served cold potatoes and Karen mocked me when I ordered a chai chiller with almond milk. In addition, when Karen dropped a fork from a table she was cleaning, she kicked it off to the side of the room. The blonde operating the cash register also had an attitude when I asked for alternatives to their notoriously dry potatoes.
The service was incredibly slow and the food was below average for the price. It would have been faster and 25% of the cost if I would have went to the grocery store and made the same food myself. I will not be returning.
The food is quality, fresh, healthy ingredients, reasonably priced and delicious . I would definitely go back
Wheat pancakes with strawberry were very good. Had a local bottled root beer. Staff were friendly. Great view of state Street. Wifi
I took two planes all the way from South Carolina so I could eat this amazing food. It was totally worth the trip. I would advise that you guys keep up the good work. Ill be sure to visit again!
The review about nothing on the menu over $9 is wrong, although this is a relatively inexpensive place to go, my bill is normally around $15. Good food, wait staff could be improved a little!
Small portion for the price, dry breakfast potatoes, omelette wasnt good. Used to come here a lot in undergrad. Atmosphere is still nice and nostalgic.
Always a great spot if you can beat the rush. Great people watching too!
The food is good for the price, but all of the dining ware was not very clean.
Well kept secret for a absolutely fantastic breakfast!
Great taste but portions are a bit small for the price. good vegetarian options as well.
