Raising a family and other obligations kept me from making the financial commitment of putting a motor on the Boston Whaler I inherited from my Grandfather. The last time it saw water was 1999. Called for a new used lower unit for my sons 150 johnson. I was told to bring my shaft and shifter in to match the other unit. But I forgot the case in to get an accurate measurement. I got a reconditioned 35hp Johnson for my boat, and it looks and performs beautifully. They also converted my ancient cable/pulley steering system to a modern single cable system with a new helm. Everything was installed, tuned, and boat tested on the river before I picked it up. Top notch work finished a day ahead of schedule and a little under budget. Fantastic. Satisfied beyond expectations! Was looking for an outboard for my heavy 1986 14 Sea Nymph Fishing Machine all last summer and early fall, through market place and Craigslist. Then came across Riverside Outboards and talked to Joel in December about what I wanted boat rated for a 35 HP and wanted electric start, he said no problem took my deposit and said he would let me know went it was ready. He let me know this April and I went he demonstrated it, a real nice early 80’s Johnson and gave great advice! Just took it for its maiden voyage, I had a 20 Hp that just broke wake speed, got her to plane and up to 38 (oops!! 28) no problem!

This was my own personal experience that I had with riverside outboards. I will say firsthand that I have very little experience with boat motors and this is why I thought it would be a good idea to have it looked at and tuned up. And when I had an issue yes I did reach out to the owner.This is what is a copy of the email I sent himI have my motor that was repaired by you 2 years ago. This year is my 1st year ever trying to use it. I got it started, it ran but not long enough to warm up after that it wouldnt start. I have to hold the choke while pulling the cord at the same time. The choke knob doesnt stay out it keeps sliding back.I have tried multiple times to try and get it started but I cant get it to start since that one initial time. Is it possible that something more needs to be tuned up on it?And this is the response I received backTim,The motor was running fine when it left my hands. You didn’t want to spend money on the motor beyond the absolute minimum, so I left the choke knob grommet, which I explained is worn out, as-is. You bought a 45-year old motor in a private sale and dont want to put any money into it, so you get what you pay for.Letting an old motor sit unused is one of the worst things you can do because it makes the ignition systems not work. Without looking at the motor, it is impossible for me to know what is wrong with it, if anything at all, this is common sense.You have no experience with boats or motors, and you bought a 45 year old engine. You didn’t buy a car, you bought a used boat engine and want to spend as little as possible on it, but you want it to run like new engine? Not sure your expectations are realistic?I looked up your service record and see it was on 10/27/18 for $355.00. That tells me you did the bare minimum to the motor, and I specifically remember you calling your wife while standing in my office just to have that work performed.I’m not here to hold your hand, train you on how to use a boat motor, or provide free tech support. Stop contacting me until you have a more realistic expectation of what you’re doing. I deal with folks who come here and spend thousands of dollars on repairs because they know that boating isn’t cheap if you want something that is quality. If you’re frustrated with your 45 year old motor, then go pay $3,500.00 to buy a new engine because that is what they cost new for one the size you have.Hopefully this provides some prescriptive whether or not this is a company that you would like to deal with or not.

Called to make an appointment to fix my 93 Evinrude 48SPL bucking at half throttle. He troubleshot with me over the phone, suggested it was a faulty overtemp sensor. Unplugged sensor and motor ran fine. Went fishing the next day and caught a huge rainbow, nice laker, and a couple smallmouth. Never would have made it out on the lake without his help, and all at no charge. I will recommend Riverside to everyone I know and you can bet that any future service for my boat will be done by them.UPDATE...issue came back and once again Joel helped diagnose the problem. Ended up being the power pack (ignition module). A shop tried to sell me $700 worth of used parts to repair it. Joel talked me out of it and I bought $200 in new parts including the alignment tool and did the job in a couple hours myself... just in time for 2 weeks vacation. Three years ago I bought a used boat and the owner included a 1976 Evinrude 15hp motor at no charge in the sale. The motor hadnt been used in 4-5 years and literally had a squirrels nest under the engine cover. I brought the motor to Joel @ Riverside Outboards for him to look over and see if it was still operable. Joel quickly troubleshot/diagnosed the engine and repaired it to virtually new condition. The motor has run beautifully since and I look forward to getting several more seasons of use from it.I highly recommend Riverside Outboards to anyone who has an Evinrude or Johnson outboard; especially if it is an older/vintage model Joel is incredibly knowledgeable and easy to deal with.

After a not so great experience at a local boat service shop I asked around for recommendations on where to have my boat serviced. A friend recommended me to Joel so that is where I brought my (used) boat for its first service. Since it was my first boat and I bought it at auction I didn’t know much about it so I wanted him to give it a good once over and replace the water pump.Well, Joel took his time let me know what the boat could use and also brought up some items that the trailer would need. Finally put our old Aristocraft Torpedo 14 in the water yesterday. Had been working on it off and on for the last 3 months weather permitting. Had a 1976 40 hp on it that was beyond repair.I found Joel online back in February . Had a great phone conversation about our old boat and the sentimental value (been on family since new). Joel fit me up with a nice 1982 Evinrude 35 hp that runs awesome . Had it ready to go wired up, ignition hooked up .... all I had to do is mount it on boat and fire it up . Our old Torpedo is tricky with pulley steering and Joel set me up with an adapting bracket that will get us through this summer till I have one made that fits a little better . Great experience and I enjoy the passion he has for old motors.

Update 8/2/20I purchased a 150hp Johnson for a 19ft center console from Joel and this is the second outboard I have purchased from him (the first being a 15hp Johnson). My five star review still stands and I can say that the new motor runs just as well as the 15hp I previously bought. My old 150hp motor died in the peak of summer and Joel did everything he could to get me the new motor on time and within his original quoted date. He walked me through all the details of the motor. You can tell that Joel really cares about each motor he goes through and sells. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who needs repower or outboard service.Joel at Riverside Outboards is great to work with. I was in search of a 15hp outboard for a small skiff and wanted the simplicity and lightweight of a Johnson/Evinrude 2 stroke. He is upfront with his pricing and on time with delivery. After trying to take a 1980’s vintage Johnson to several other shops who wanted nothing to do with it, I called Runners after driving by his shop several times. They work by appointment only, but the owner tries to be flexible for you, and he tries to make the appointments at times so he can devote attention to just one customer at a time. When I dropped my motor off late in the work day, he took the time to pull several key components off while I waited, so he could check several known problem areas that would signal repairs that would be expensive and not worth the repairs. Luckily my motor didn’t have those issues, but it hadn’t been serviced in many years, so several other areas needed attention, which meant a bunch of shop time. But paying shop time and a bit for parts is far better than buying a new motor for a camp Jon boat that only gets used 2-3weeks each summer. We’ll get it back for camp in end of June and July, so then we’ll know exactly how good he did on rehabbing it!

I purchased a 15 HP Johnson engine from Runner Outboards. Great communication during the process. When picking the engine up a great training session on proper use and maintenance was provided. Dont buy a new outboard; save hundreds or thousands and buy an outboard from Runner Outboards!

Update 7/29/20: Joel replaced a whole bunch of damaged parts on my 60HP resulting from a fire that started on a tilt trim relay. It was the first time he serviced the engine as it came with the boat I bought (i.e. I did not buy it from him). He did the work anyway as I was an existing customer on my smaller kicker engines. The 5 star rating remains.Joel turns these work horse engines into gold. This is my 2nd engine. I started with a 4HP which ran great then upgraded to a 9.9HP long shaft as a kicker for my 17 ft center console. I use it for trolling, holding pattern in the rip while fishing & as a safety engine. This 9.9HP is fantastic, it looks brand new & I am thrilled with it. It gives me lots of confidence on the ocean to know I can get out of a jam & get home with it. Ive been recommending Joel to anyone who is in the market for a used engine. He really knows his stuff & will take good care of you.

Another great year at camp with my 9.9 Evinrude that I bought from Runner Outboards two years ago. I went years going from one private sale to another thinking I was getting great deals only to find they wouldn’t get me through a season. So glad I found Runner outboards. I bought a 1998 24’ center console with the original Evinrude 200 2-stroke engine on it. When I started having problems, I called around to find someone local to work on it. I was turned away from all of the bigger shops because they don’t work on motors this big. Thank god I found Joel. This guy is incredibly knowledgeable about these motors and had a very quick turn around rate for a one man shop. Now that I’m selling my boat he has been happy to talk to my potential buyers about the motor and it’s integrity which is a huge help. If you have a Johnson/Evinrude on your boat that needs some attention, don’t give yourself a headache trying to find anyone else. Joel is the best around.

Joel provided me with a 35hp Evinrude for my 1978 Mirrocraft. I could not be happier. The engine runs flawlessly and idles down smooth at slow speeds.Joel took the time to explain all maintenance and operating procedures to me. I bought a 15 horse evinrude from joel this spring and have never had a more trouble free motor than this one.joel is amazing with two stroke engines.i would recommend runner outboards to anyone.

Absolutely awesome, I drove all over southern NH looking for a prop for my Johnson 30HP and came up with nothing but offers to order, I called Joel and I stopped by within 15 minutes and within another 10 he hooked me up with two of what I needed! At a more than fair price, I couldnt recommend him more and I will be back there first for future matters pertaining to my Johnson 30 horse!

We bought a 9.9 horse Johnson from Joel 2 years ago. He also rebuilt our Evinrude 6 horse that has been in the family for over 40 years. Suffice it to say that the 6 horse has worked perfectly ever since the rebuild and the Johnson also a 40 plus year old engine has worked excellent also. Joel delivers a quality product at a good price. Certainly a rarity these days. If you need a motor and dont care if if its new but just works great give him a call. Did exactly what he said he would do. I added a 20 hp johnson with elec start and remote control and a steering system. Everything works as it should.
