A great oasis for vegans, and especially vegan travelers. Being on the road and eating plant-based can get tricky, but MKE has this covered well. We had Tofu Scramble, biscuits and gravy, and French toast. It was a beautiful day, we sat outside and enjoyed conversation and some sunshine. I think the food could be better overall, but judging by the amount of business I also understand that keeping up with high demand can come with slightly less attention to detail. Bonus: picked up items for our hotel kitchen while there from the Co-op. Ill be back next time we are in town!

So lucky to have this In our neighborhood!!! The proper place to dine if your afraid to eat meat 🥩 for whatever reason! Not strictly vegan in the Cafe but almost all plates have the option... Decent enough grocery selection just hope someone someday will talk these folk into carrying some humanly raised antibiotic free meats 🍖 or something besides offering the fresh turkeys 🦃 for Thanksgiving (which are out of this world FYI)...

An excellent choice for vegan or vegetarian! Breakfast, lunch or dinner served inside the cozy cafe oy enjoy the nice weather on their ampl sidewalk cafe! Weekend brunch is not to be missed. The attached grocery/health foos retail store stock all the staples plus supplements. I always enjoy the soups of the day & the various deli salads & vegan sides. This is a co-op, staffed by many volunteers so be sure to tip generously. You cant do better than a meal & a stroll through the historic Riverwest Neighborhood.

I am new to being vegan, my girlfriend has been vegan for awhile and as we are new to the Milwaukee area wanted to try Riverwest Co-op. We loved it. I got the biscuits and gravy with the vegan sour cream. I was amazed. The biscuits are delicious, they and the mushroom gravy are definitely homemade. The gravy is a brown gravy that I feel you would normally see on mashed potatoes or something like that and not a breakfast dish, that said I would still order it again and smile with every bite. My girlfriend got the tofu breakfast scramble with veggies. She couldn’t get enough and finished the plate. She was full but wanted more, it was so good she couldn’t get enough. The grocery store is pretty cool as well. We walked around for a moment and found a couple blue sky sodas to enjoy with our meal. You order in the cafe and pay in the store, bring your ticket back and give that to the cook when they call your name for your meal. We will definitely be back and can’t wait to try other things on the menu.

That aside, the food is absolutely spectacular and the chefs work hard to meet people were they are. I have a food allergy and I feel safe here. I wanted to like this store, and can appreciate a little grit, especially in a co-op, but... The limited produce (what I want to buy the most) was old, wilted, and in dirty containers. Nice to have as a corner market if you live in the area, but I wouldnt seek it as someone who lives elsewhere. I know the grocery market is difficult, and I want to seem them continue, but they should look at other smaller, successful co-ops, such as those in Stevens Point and Eau Claire, for how they can improve.

UPDATE: I was disappointed. Ginger cabbage soup was too spicy to eat. Asked for sourdough bread. I got some of that but also RYE which I hate. Nasty mouthful. Black beans were slightly under cooked. All the food in the case was crusted over. Seems the main agenda of the employees is to play annoying music too loud. Such a let down.Old review: Impossible to find food this good anywhere else. I live in Sheboygan, but frequently work in Milwaukee. After becoming vegan around two years ago, it was hard to find places to accomodate my eating choices...since Wisconsin is basically the meat and dairy capital of the planet. I had been trying vegan options at local restaurants, but nothing stood out. Well, I found Riverwest Co-Op...and decided to try it out. Im thrilled that I did. I started with Coffee and Biscuits and Gravy. Heaven! I cant tell you how awesome it was to find such good food, at a decent price. Im sold. The store is on the small side, not unexpected for a local place. The selection is really very good. It is a little pricy, but not unreasonable for locally grown, organic, and specialty foods. I would still stock up at aldi on basics but hit this place up for some wow factor. The attached cafe is fantastic, vegetarian in a way that allows you to enjoy vegetarian instead of pretending they can fool you into believing its meat. I had the seiten gyro. The seiten was flavored with the gyro spices and it was as good as any gyro i have had. The tabboulih salad was fresh and had a nice bite. Even the hummus was top notch.

Their tofu bbq is great and delicious and tastes great every time i order it. The reason I put a 3 star is for their inconsistency when making their shakes. The jury is still out for me with this place. When I moved away from the MIlwaukee area 5 years ago, this coop was steeped in some unsightly drama. They seem to have taken that whole thing to heart and so its more comfortable for people who are not white and straight and cis to shop here, but its still far too expensive for what it is and they do not offer low-income memberships, which any coop true to its tenants should.

I didnt become vegan until after I moved away from Milwaukee, so I never got the chance to try the deliciousness that is the Riverwest Co-op Cafe. But, when I visited the city again after I had made transistion into veganism, one of the first places I visited was here! I came twice during my stay to enjoy the food here, and I was most smitten by the vegan Phamous Philly. The seitan is made in-house, and you can see everything being prepared in front of you while you sit and wait in the cute dining area. This philly exceeded my expectations. I even tried to recreate it at home, to no avail! Smothered in melted cheese, bun toasted to perfection! Fond memories of my first experience tasting this heavenly food will keep me returning every time I am back in town!

Where do I start... my first time here 2 years ago as a vegan I was treated very badly. We were waiting in line and one of the employees busted through to get back in to the kitchen and was EXTREMELY rude and bossy. We proceeded to leave to go to my good friends restaurant the beerline cafe. I finally went back last week with my newly vegetarian neice with Christmas gift certificates. Not to mention I did call to tell my bad story to a manager named Paula as she said she would send my coupons for the bad behavior I entailed. NEVER RECEIVED ANYTHING. Last week was a redemption as Alex treated me and my niece with respect and dignity. The vegan tempeh reuben and tuno melt were absolutely fantastic. To die for. This is my new favorite place to eat. The man and woman at the front counter were very helpful and friendly. I havent eaten murdered flesh in many many years and have been in the vegan food industry for years its rhe best Reuben in the world. I cant wait for more. Amazing food for us vegans. Im telling everyone. I wish I could afford to eat every meal at the riverwest coop. Just so delicious. If it wasnt for my first bad experience it would have been 5 stars. Just amazing is all I can say. I only wish i could make food like this at home.
