Were on a Minneapolis vacation, and my husband and I have to pause and write a 5-star review for this place. This is exactly what you look for in a bookstore! From the moment you walk in there are books from the floor to ceiling on bookshelves, stacked in piles in the corners, just overflowing with classics and new titles from debuting authors. There are thorough, handwritten Staff Picks notes on all the shelves, there are creaky hardwood floors, there are pothos vines draped over bookshelves, and theres the largest collection of works from Indigenous authors weve ever seen in one place; I think its an unrivalled resource in that way. Theres a loft overhead and a Hobbit Hole underneath for kids to play in while their parents shop. The employees interacted with each other like good friends, and were upbeat and helpful to work with. This was such a cool experience, and were so glad we wandered into this neighborhood bookstore in our time in Minneapolis.

You will always find something...even if you walk in not knowing what youre looking for. Its a very unique space inside and just begs for you to wander and find that special book that is calling your name. Staff are friendly and knowledgable and have made great recommendations; they are a great resource. They pack a lot of subject matter into this space. If you have young readers in your life, make sure you check out the childrens and young adult sections too. Birchbark is also a great shop to find greeting cards and gifts for anyone. Thank you, Birchbark - see you soon!

Recently moved to the neighborhood and adore this bookstore. The staff are SO sweet and they have an incredible curated selection of titles (I pretty much get all my book recommendations from browsing what’s in their windows each week). If they don’t have a particular book you’re looking for they can always order it for you, so with enough advance planning there’s really no need to go anywhere else for your books! Please support this neighborhood native owned business!

After spending a week in awe of the native lands up by the Boundary Waters and northern Minnesota, my partner and I wanted to find some reading material to learn more about what it was like to live up there for native people (before, and during when they were being pushed out). Although we couldn’t go in to this bookstore, the woman working there over the phone suggested some great books. I just finished reading one and I think it might be one of my new favorite books. I will definitely treasure these stories and am so glad we stopped by this bookstore.

This place is amazing, and I hadnt asked how they do their Covid-related protocols,(They do curbside, shop online, purchase ahead online or by phone!), and I had walked there a couple of miles, from home, in the cold, cutting it within 5 minutes of closing time....doh! The staff person I dealt with was supernice, Anthony, and he worked with me very warmly and professionally. We had spoken on the phone the previous day, so he knew exactly where the Solstice-present-for-my-grown-daughter book was, (The Marrow Thieves), and we did a socially distanced transaction. The jewelry and gifty cards in the window bespoke volumes of local and Native artist support, and I know the store,(owned mostly by World renowned author Louise Erdrich and her talented artist and producer sister Heidi), does many amazing traditional classes, readings and booksignings, storytelling and Community artist events when were not in pandemics !Easily 5 Stars out of 5 !🔥

The most amazing bookstore in the city. Native authors and topics, and a great selection of other books as well. Great place for gifts, including cards and small arts and crafts. Childrens books, poetry, indigenous studies, law, climate, history, fiction, nonfiction, baby books, young adult, and much more. Every book feels carefully selected and is in stock for a reason.

Great customer service. Too bad that Google maps said they were open, as they were closed for inperson shopping and only for online pickup and delivery. However, I told the woman who worked in the store what I was looking for and she brought out several books for me to review, apologized that the store was closed even though the door was unlocked, and returned to process my selected purchase. So it ended up being a pretty simple experience.

Cozy little book store with lots of native American books and nature type books. A decent selection of childrens books -especially unique books. I love that Birchbark has titles I wont find at chain bookstores. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The store manages to fit an amazing number and range of books while still seeming roomy. Its a real shame the cafe next door closed - the two locations worked well together (owner was unreasonable on the lease renewal, I hear).Perhaps best of all, theyll order anything they dont have, and remind you when it comes in (rather necessary for me, Im afraid). Highly recommended.

Review №54

Cute, but didnt have the type of books we were looking for. It is definitely a local bookstore. It was very eclectic. We wanted run of the mill books, but they didnt have them. I was looking for the newest girl with the Dragon tattoo or even a Patterson, but we didnt see any. The staff seemed to be carrying on a really ridiculous conversation. One employee thought that hed eaten meat a couple times that week and thought he had iron poisoning then asked if that was even a thing. I wanted to say, yes it is a thing but it doesnt happen in 3 days. They are so engrossed in conversation, I didnt want to ask if they had the books.
