As a student at the Culinary Institute of Michigan, I had to get in touch with a local restaurant or bakery....The Hodgepodge Bakehouse is a little gem hidden in Muskegon. Not many peopleknow where it’s located, but of all the people I have conversed with, they all hear wonderful things about the bakery. Personally, before this project for college, I’d never even heard of the place myself. After the first conversation the Hodgepodge Bakehouse owner and I sharedover email, I decided to go there and try it. I figured it would give me an excuse to scope out the bakery, check out their menu, and meet the owner and employees in person. I did some research by reading some stories from MLive and checked out some reviews on Google Maps and Yelp. When I entered the establishment, I was in awe at how awesome the interior looked and how good the food sounded. I spent fifty dollars that day, and walked home with a dozen donuts, a bag of their jalapeno cheddar buns, and a ham and cheese breakfast “pragel,” also known as apretzel bagel. Each and every one of the donuts looked delicious, so I just had to try them all! Then, the next day I had to try those jalapeno cheddar buns! They were quite good, if you were wondering! The owner is very nice and she seems to have a good heart. Her name is Diana and she bought the Hodgepodge Bakehouse from the previous owners back in 2017. She kept the name of the bakery along with the recipes, however, she is also including her own ideas and recipes into the menu as well! As far as I’ve seen, her employees arereally nice as well. However, like most businesses right now, they are short staffed. The atmosphere of the bakery was excellent. It felt welcoming and I felt that I could sit there for a few hours just sipping on one of their many coffees while finishing some homework. The scents of freshly baked bread and sweets were intoxicating and it felt as if it were a warmsummer day in my grandmother’s kitchen while she made her homemade breads. There were many signs on the walls that had some fun baker puns, my favorite being a donut shaped sign above the counter that reads “Donut worry, be happy!” The interior walls are almost all black, and most of the pastries are out on display. The entire area is lit with low power LED lights, andthey felt very soft, and fit well with the design of the bakery. Overall it was a very cozy little dining area that’s really nice and kept super clean!Foodwise, I quite enjoy the fact that there are multiple things to choose from, and not just donuts or cakes. Theres cookies, sandwiches, freshly baked breads, buns, pumpkin rolls, muffins, and many other things. They had many coffee choices to choose from, and also manysandwiches to try! There are all sorts of flavors of donuts there that I never would have thought of trying- such as the Maple Bacon donut. The bakery uses fresh ingredients such as blueberriesand apples from the Farmers Market to use in their turnovers and muffins. They need to make sure the farms they buy from are certified, otherwise they cannot use that produce in the bakery. They look for the best quality at a decent price. In doing so, their products are amazing, and at a reasonable price. 10/10 would recommend!
Absolutely love this place!! I actually just left there! Great customer service makes you feel welcome!! I definitely recommend this place to everyone all the time!! The lunch menu is amazing also! I love getting my coffee from there and the smores and turtle donuts with the creme brulee coffee..... AMAZING!!!
BEST KEPT SECRET IN MUSKEGON but it shouldn’t be a secret anymore!Hodgepodge is a Hispanic owned and female owned small business bakery. It’s a standalone store with sole ownership belonging to the now current owner. The owner is an amazing culinary expert in both baked goods and food having over 10 years’ experience as a culinary professor at Baker College.Hodgepodge has sandwiches, soups, a variety of lattes and coffee drinks made with local Ferris coffee, breakfast sandwiches that are BOMB, and EVERY baked good you could possibly want including a wide variety of doughnuts, all the breads, turnovers, muffins, scones, cakes, banket, cheesecake, cookies, themed treats around all the holidays, or they can custom make something for you through special order!I also just found out Hodgepodge is the sole provider of breads and desserts to over a dozen local Muskegon area restaurants. Check them out!
Never had a bad experience. Their donuts and breads are baked fresh daily. They offer a good selection of baked goods for a reasonable price. Best is to get there early as they do sell out of some selections. Donuts stay fresh for days.
I had forgotten about the bakery being there! The sandwich was WONDERFUL, and better than fast food! Although it was made to order VERY quickly 🙂👍😋
I enjoy their 16oz mocha, italian sandwich, chili (ground beef, carrots, and celery in a tomato sauce) with a big baguette roll, and especially their bacon donuts. 😍 I got some of their white bread to make my own italian sandwiches 😄
Best German chocolate cake I’ve ever had! Purchased twice from the Station and both times, it was outstanding
Love this place. Great bread, perfect sandwiches and amazing staff.
Just stopped in to get my son a donut for his 4th birthday and the case was almost completely wiped out at 9 in the morning. When I asked if they could please add frosting and sprinkles for him to one of the only ones they had left I was told no, with an attitude. Seriously? I could see the frosting and sprinkles on the shelf from where I was standing... what awful customer service. Were from Muskegon and are back in town for the week visiting family and will NOT be recommending Hodgepodge to anyone else ever again.
Worst doughnuts I’ve tried. I don’t understand how they have such great reviews, I was there at 7am today and was treated terribly, but maybe she was annoyed I was there so early. The fresh vanilla and strawberry sprinkle were alright, but I asked for vanilla cereal and got the wrong one, and I got an apple fritter, and the apple fritter was so gross and stale. The donuts where thrown in a paper bag, and got stuck to the sides. $4.50 for 2 sub-par doughnuts with the frosting ruined and a stale fritter. Gave a $5 and I’m mad that I even tipped the $0.50. Will never return. I know there’s not many bakeries near by, but either just eat Tim Horton’s or try the Meijer or Walmart bakery, cheaper and 10 times as good.
Another local gem here in Muskegon. Excellent baked fresh breads, buns, donuts and other pastries. They also have delicious sandwiches! Make sure to stop in and try a pragel for breakfast 👍...I would highly recommend stopping by to anyone visiting the Muskegon area!
First time I had ever been there very nice place good service food was quite good
Love their whole grain breads - especially the 9 grain. Love their muffins & scones, too I drive from Fremont (45 minutes) just to get their bread. Friendly owner & staff. Clean.
Cases are empty. I can only order cookies and cakes-nothing available for samples to try. Asked for menus for future take-out orders, but none available. Asked if the menu was available online-SOME items are listed online, but not everything and some things online are no longer available, and online prices are not correct as prices have increased Asked for a brochure for cakes and desserts-they dont have a menu for that. Asked about the sandwich menu-same response. Really sorry I went in.
Great coffee and a unique selection of donuts and baked goods including oreo and reeses donuts. Very good and staff is great!
The first fruit donut I have ever thought was worth eating is the Hodgepodge strawberries with cream filled paczki!
An exemplary small bakery - the breakfast sandwiches are to die for, and every donut Ive tried so far has been fantastic!!! Skip the big names, support your small business friends in town!
Good variety but you often get there and they are picked over
Omg I went for a on the open except so much work to be done and the pay was a joke 😂 $11.00 but McDonalds pays $15.. a hr
Stopped in to pick up bread and left with a loaf of sourdough (which made the most delicious grilled cheese ever), six doughnuts (a mix of old fashioned and cake- the latter of which I popped in the air fryer the next day to freshen and ended up with a s’mores doughnut that was more religious experience than pastry), and a hot chocolate bomb that I haven’t yet tried but HIGHLY doubt is anything less than phenomenal. What a wonderful bakery- I don’t think I’ll be able to pass through the area without stopping ever again.
Love their bread and cookies!
I gave it a three star because this was my first time being in there and I order2 doughnutswith cereal and the cereal was soggy and it was captain crunch so it shouldnt be soggy and the doughnut was dry and my other doughnut was the strawberry cheesecake and it was dry also I was looking forward to it because it does smell amazing in there but dispointed in the doughnuts 🍩...
This bakery has awesome cinnamon rolls, their cinnamon raisin bread 🍞 was also good, I would like a little more cinnamon in it, but thats just me, I like a lot of cinnamon. Lol. I will go back to try more things for sure. 👍
Very yummy food and love the staff 🥰
I wanted scones; they have scones! Great taste and wide selection. Definetly a gem of a bakery.
Pleasantly surprised. Been awhile since I visited. Great German Chocolate cake and bread. Ill be back.
Absolutely horrible I live a half of mile from there and every time I’m there they always screw something up I will no longer be giving them my business…I would just recommend going to Brooklyn bagels
Great homemade pastries and breads. Ferris Coffee. A gem in an unexpected neighborhood.
Such a cute little bake shop, with a wide variety of pastries, donuts, coffee drinks — as well as breakfast + lunch sandwiches. i had the most perfect chai tea latte, paired with a hot ham, cheese + egg croissant. they were delicious, the donuts were amazing as well.
These guys! Their breads are wonderful. Their donuts are creative and fun. They have great sandwiches, real fill-you-uppers. Their coffee is fantastic. This place has some of the best pastries in town, all fresh made. I love it here.
Best breakfast Croissants in town ;)
Everything I get here is SO good! My favorite are the maple bacon donuts. I always enjoy walking in to see some new type of donut and it s a relaxed atmosphere that feel inviting to sit and read a book while enjoying a pastry and cup of coffee. Diana, the owner, is so friendly and personable. Always recommending Hodgepodge!
Best doughnuts in Muskegon
Great place, love it
I went by today to get some donuts and check the place out because Ive been meaning to for a while since its in my local area. The donuts look good, so I got a few of them: mint, pumpkin, and chocolate with Boston cream filling. I got an americano. The woman behind the counter was very pleasant, and everything went well at the store.I noted that I could probably never order lunch here because there are no vegetarian options on the sandwich menu, but this looks more like a take and go breakfast place. It bothered me a little bit, but oh well I thought. The donuts tasted good, and I thought everything was fine for the next half an hour. Im not sure what they use to make their donuts (do they fry them in animal lard or something?) because after a while my stomach was extremely upset and had to run to the bathroom. Maybe it wasnt the only thing that wasnt vegetarian friendly, I thought, as I was on the toilet.I only had one and a half donuts, and a 12 oz americano. It was the first and only thing I ate this morning. I dont know what could have caused this otherwise.I gave it 2 stars because the service was still good.
Great quality breads, doughnuts, artisan sandwiches, and coffees as well as service
Had their sourdough bread at a local restaurant and it was awesome. Checked out the bakery. Small place with amazing baked goods. Wonderful employees. Will keep going back.
Great selection of donuts and coffee and cakes
Want a quick cup of coffee and an egg and cheese slider for breakfast? How about glazed or plain donuts for dunking? Hodgepodge has what youre hankering for and a friendly staff to deliver it up to your satisfaction!
Nice local bakery. Friendly staff and delicious baked goods. I get all my bread there
Support Hodgepodge, best bread youve had in a long time!
Drove 30 minutes based on Yelp and Google reviews of this place. Yes, the staff is nice, yes, there are a variety of donuts...However...They dont make them fresh. I showed up at 6:55am (5min before store opening) and when I came in they were just losing in the unsold donuts from the day before and charging the same price. Its shocking to me what passes as a good donut experience in western Michigan. There are very few, if any, dedicated donut shops. Theyre all bakeries that claim to sell donuts too.The idea that you can show up at 7am and be sold day old donuts exclusively is absurd.
Had to pick up paczkis for Fat Tuesday...they were very good!!😀
I just rang up the Hodgepodge Bakehouse to make certain the house remained open and baking. The Bakehouse has an interesting history because it occupies the space once known as the Dutch Bakery. A baker who once had a quaint space in Fremont moved his ovens and his display cases to Norton Shores because he lost his parking in Fremont. He said to me, They took my parking, in a moment of exasperation as I asked him pesky questions. But he got busy, visiting all the local restaurants, offering to deliver fresh rolls and breads impossibly early in the morning. Harris Hospitality took him up on this offer, as far as I could tell. Maybe the Harris family looked at the Dutch bakers invoices and thought, Thats a ton of money, maybe we should buy him out.For whatever reason, Harris Hospitality did buy out the Dutch baker and his wife and the couple went into a merry retirement, I am hoping. It took a while for the concept to come together, but I attended the grand opening, admired the two small cars the business bought to make deliveries. I dont think the delivery bit every came together. Hodgepodge even had plans to deliver beer! I like the sandwiches and I loved the soup. I stopped in mornings for a cappuccino made with a little crema art work, posting pictures of the art as the art grew more and more ambitious. The prices couldnt have been better. One of my famously frugal friends stopped in once a week for lunch when the deal included a half sandwich and a serving of soup for a pittance. Whats a pittance? If my friend showed up and actually paid for lunch, what he was willing to pay was a pittance. I believe, like the Harris family, my friend came from a family with roots in Scotland, practicing the famous frugality of that island.
This place is Amazing! A hidden gem with friendly people and GREAT food! I love giving their donuts as gifts, they look great and taste better. I recommend them to everyone! Go here! Yummmm!
Amazing baked goodies and donuts. Super friendly people.
We used Hodgepodge for our wedding donuts. The donuts tasted amazing and the display was perfect! Highly recommend.
Go for lunch! Or breakfast. The baked goods are impeccable. Coffee is strong. Only downside, the vegetarian options are not as well advertised as they could be.
This place is fantastic. My kids love it and there is a wide variety for everyone. They even do lunch and cakes!
Hodgepodge is such a delightful, and ever-expanding bakehouse.
Today we feasted on Paczkis. I ordered 7 flavors and they are all magnificent. The house favorites were Raspberry and Blueberry!
Absolutely divine!! The jalapeño and cheese bagels made great breakfast sandwiches. My kids loved the doughnuts, big and fresh! Not your run of the mill place and the service was friendly. We love to support small local businesses and this is one worth supporting.
Picked up some great bread for sandwiches. People were great!
A very cute spot with good donuts at a great price. They have the classics but also fun varieties like smore, cereal topped, and reeses.
What a gem! Visiting Muskegon on vacation and always on the lookout for a charming local business to visit. Hodgepodge is just that..charming, welcoming and just a short drive from Pere Marquette Beach. The new owner proudly introduced herself to me and my kids and she was every bit as friendly as a small business owner should be. The donuts were fresh and tasty and several unique varieties. I especially enjoyed the maple bacon donut. We chose a selection of 6 different donuts and they all look amazing. My only regret was not requesting a real coffee cup for my cappuccino. It was served in a to-go cup, which I generally despise. Next visit I will definitely ask! Thank you!
Marie was very nice and friendly great customer service
I love that they have vegan options here. The donuts are so good!
Great service & selection
My daughter and I have a special tradition on Sunday to enjoy fresh, homemade all varieties of donuts made with love and family with every bite. We love speciality donuts with fun decorations!! We love the thought of Hodge Podge being close by, so please stay with our community.
The donuts are some of the best Ive had. And, the sandwiches were great too! Great service too!
Disappointed today. Checked website and saw it was open all day.Arrived just before 1:00pm on a Sunday. The door sign said open Sunday8:00am-2:00pm. Lights were off and door was locked. Really wantedto purchase baked goods. Please update website
Hodgepodge is an excellent bakery and has delicious muffins. Bagels, soups, breads, donuts service and do on. Sandwiches, etc, etc. I highly recommend it.
Omg they re bake goods are so yumy. And they are so nice
They had everything we wanted and great customer service and always taste great
Very good yeast donut.
Jalapeno Cheddar Pragels are the best! Ferris coffee and excellent pastries. Try the Dirty South Sammy, yummy!!
Fun local bakery. Great selection and fresh items.
Great service, friendly, always good baked goods
My son and I have a Sunday morning tradition to walk down and have a donut. Some of the specialty donuts are excellent. The new layout of the counter creates a backup right at the door that is a bit annoying,
Their pragels (pretzels + bagels) were amazing for a great, filling breakfast sandwich.
Second best sandwich shop on Lakeshore. Best bakery. Doughnuts are awesome
Great bake goods.
Delicious and awesome atmosphere.
Good prices, tasty food. Asiago pragel (pretzel bagel) was fantastic, looking forward to the jalapeno cheddar.
My favorite sandwich shop in Muskegon.Their recently expanded menu is awesome, and theyre a very affordable place to get a great sandwich. Theres zero reason to eat at a Subway in Muskegon with places like this available.
Great place to get coffee and antique shop.
Great donuts and many other baked goods! If you havent been to this local gem, you are missing out.
The BEST sourdough bread!
Bought bread and a praegel. Theyre great!
