I was lucky enough to be the only person in the bookstore on the day I visited. Joanne helped me pick out 3-4 books, and I bought them all.A fabulous place for book lovers. Mask up and show your Vax card for entry.
Quaint book shop. If you didnt ask for directions you wouldnt find it.
Really extensive collection of books, for a compact space. Very knowledgeable staff and I had a very pleasant experience.
A very small bookshop but the lady who runs it is very helpful and kind. Worth seeing if you really like books!
If you love to read then this is the store. Its size, dont allow it to fool you, because it is loaded with books for your searching. My name is Roger Browning. I am a writer from a ranch in Texas and enjoy my visits right here. My name is Roger Browning and I am also the author of my new book The Reckoning of Rance, that is out right now on Amazon. It is a story of distaste to some but quite tasty for most. Sort of like the spice in the food I come to this region for. It is labeled as a western, but dont let that fool you, it is a family drama of intrigue to be sure. All of the things made into a modern day ranching family that could have sat a pirates vessel. If you are down this way you owe it to yourself to give this great store a good look. Tell them that Roger Browning sent you. The author of, after you have read it, what you might think is a really good book.
Store was easy to find. Great prices and staff very helpful.
This is cool historic little book store that makes a great brief refuge from the bustle and noise of the French quarter. It’s very well maintained, the staff is kind and knowledgeable and the small selection of books is well chosen and has a nice variety. Pop in to see where Faulkner wrote his first novel and see some of his first editions!
Fantastic book store with a great selection. Staff was very friendly. A great party of Louisiana history.
Youre reading reviews on google, why not read a book?
This place is fantastic, charming and well stocked. The staff is very helpful with both phone and in person orders. If you are looking for something they will go out of their way to find what you need, I have never been disappointed. When I first found out that they do not have any real pirates working at the place I was a little let down, but they do have a kitten who lives upstairs and she is currently at peek cuteness, so drop by soon.
I am a resident of the Quarter and have been here now three times. Every time the woman who runs the shop has been rude and blunt. The first time, pre-Covid, and this time, after regulations have been lifted, my friend and I were chastised immediately at the door because there are already 4 people in the shop. THEN MAKE A PLAN AND TELL US KINDLY WHEN WE CAN RETURN. This couple doesnt need the money and theyve created a mausoleum of expensive books they want to sanction off to the general public. I dont know who they dream their clientele will be, but Im a graduate student in the realm of English literature so it seems shortsighted even Im turned away rudely at the door. I have to believe Faulkner himself would not approve. Id give this zero stars if I could.
The one time I went in this place I asked the woman behind the counter if they had anything by Christopher Moore she looked at me and said “the books we have are probably more expensive than you can afford.”I responded with “I make more than 250k a year and collect rare first editions but I don’t buy from morons” and I left and will never go back. That was in 2015 and I will pain a house with a Q-tip before I ever give that place a dime.
A book house with rich history. Would recommend to all book lovers. Its small but very cute.
Small but had a good selection of new and older books. Greeted when I entered. Clean and organized.
Had such a lovely time chatting it up about books and the history of the building with the wonderful person working (1/2/21) and felt very safe the whole time thanks to the limited capacity. We walked out with a classic as well as a Faulkner title, of course. Definitely a stop worth bragging about!
Cozy, tall, with an excellently curated collection for such a small place!
Loved this little book shop stop!
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Love the history and the book selection! Even have pictures displayed with historical facts and souvenirs.
Great customer service.
Great little place. One of those shops where you end up taking home something unexpected that ends up being a favorite. Lots of poetry to discover, new literary fiction in hardback, and plenty of classics. The lady there knows it all and has great suggestions and recommendations.
The staff was so incredibly helpful.
This is an attractive and well-organized bookstore, housed in a rather small space that was once an apartment rented by William Faulkner. It’s a lovely place, like a bookstore you might find in some quirky but well-made independent film. There are rare, signed (and therefore expensive) editions... as well as more affordable (but just as unique) volumes for sale. The members of the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I found several interesting books... more than I intended to buy when I entered! I look forward to a return visit.
A lovely little bookstore with floor to ceiling shelves crammed full of great literature.
An excellent selection of books all in a place of history.
Amazing! The owner was so sweet and clearly very passionate/knowledgeable about books and the history of the place. She had lots of anecdotes and recommendations that were very much appreciated!
Nice bookstore. Too small for my like but not bad. Nicely organize, good and diverse selection. The person in charge was really attentive. A must if you are a book lover.
Very nice bookstore to visit...
Very friendly and good place of you want fun
Beautiful historical bookstore with an astounding collection, but pretty cramped and hard to see anything. Ended up just perusing because it’s hard to tell what’s what. Definitely worth a visit, but if you’re looking to actually find a book, best to visit another places.
Neat little place. A must see for book lovers.
If you enjoy reading some books and want to get your hands on novels we all gre up with, head here. It was a nice little shop and very clean. The lady working that evening was nice and let us stay longer than the store was open. Its a neat little shop just to stop in even if you dont buy a book.
Cutest book store ever
I have been to Faulkner Books twice. It is a gem. The place is small, but the selection is choice. You can, of course, find Faulkner. For a tourist like me, it was a pleasure to find innumerable volumes of fiction and nonfiction from and about New Orleans, most of which I had not known about. But you will find literary treasures of many kinds. Whoever is at the desk will be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. If you like literature and find yourself in New Orleans, you owe it to yourself to stop in.
Beautiful historical site. Great poetry collection and set of Faulkner originals, but far too small to include much of a selection of titles.
Friendly staff. Quality selection of good reads packaged inside an important piece of an American Literary historical landmark. Stop in, browse, purchase.
Quite a unique place. Interesting history, a great book selection and a place worth taking a picture at. Recommend it fully.
Amazing. Amazing amazing. Go here. Love books? Go here. Like books? Go on. Like the smell of books? Well go on in, silly! Intended to look around, left with two books. Beautiful space even if youre only browsing.
Excellent absinthe and other drinks. Fun, old pirate atmosphere. Did not actually go to the bookstore, just the bar
Classic. Found a beautiful edition of some Tennessee Williams plays. Like an old friend.
Well-organized, small but doesnt feel cramped (though they packed a lot of titles in there). The first editions/collectible case is definitely worth checking out, & they have some cool ephemera on the walls. There was something a little off-putting for me -- I think it was because there was no music playing? To be fair I was with my mom who is super loud so background noise helps mask her silliness. :D worth a stop, even if youre not a Faulkner fan (I am not).
Fun bookstore off Jackson Square
Best bookstore Ive ever been to, right in the very heart of the French Quarter. I buy a Faulkner book every time I visit, and I like to imagine where in the house he was sitting when he wrote a few of his books. Its fairly small, but you will find exactly what youre looking for here (unless youre into the vampire romance genre. This aint your spot.)If you want to read what was written in the house, the following books are usually stored front and center:1. Soldiers Pay (His first major work)2. Mosquitoes (set in NOLA)If youre a fan of poetry, the back hallway is your spot. There are 2 full bookshelves packed with all the poetry you could ever want. Then go next door and get some absinthe 😬
I never caught the owners name but she was very friendly and made some great recommendations to my wife on what to get based off of her likes. Really cool store and tucked away in an alley off Royal. Highly recommend stopping in here whether on vacation or local.
Nestled in the French Quarters Pirate Alley, this shop served as home to Ernest Hemingway when he wrote his first novel. He went on to complete several others in the small home. It is now an amazing rare book store. Highly highly recommended.
Cool book store. Good selection of classic literature and literary fiction. Definitely worth spending a little time exploring!
This is probably my favorite bookstore of all time! The woman who runs it ( Suzanne?-please forgive me-I always forget names) is a devoted reader. Every so often I go in the store and ask her to recommend her favorite reads. She loads me up with as many as I desire. I am NEVER disappointed. The bookstore is gorgeous, with handpicked books that appeal to many different tastes. It is the Magic Emporium of books for me-always something unique, captivating and beautiful waiting to be discovered. Ask the blonde woman-she knows her books!
Always a lovely spot to get local author books. The shop is quaint and the lady who runs it is a joy :)
Excellent little book store, tucked away tho. You can walk right by it if your not looking.
It was the apartment area that William Falkner had lived in while in New Orleans. It is small but very interesting. The owner was very helpful finding what I wanted.
Most bonkers bookstore Ive ever been in. SOOOOO many books all over. I was able to find a great takeaway. You could too, but it may take some digging
The best bookstore in the country! Joanns recommendations are always perfect.
Primarily retail, Faulkners offers a healthy selection of rare and first edition volumes (mostly of local literati). On display are letters and photographs from many of these same local authors, and the staff is professional yet warm. Excellent poetry selections.
Great place, beautiful interior, and friendly staff. Has lots of classics and aesthetically pleasing collection. Its clean and cozy, but just a little too pricey for me.
Amazing book store, the lady who helps us was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Those who work here at the shop are extremely well- informed, as well as being both interested AND interesting New Orleanians. This shop has a vast selection of the very best reading material in the subject of New Orleans, which is an uncommonly rare find for those who seek the thrills of truth!
What an adorable book store. Worth a stop just to see Faulkners house, but the bookseller has curated a fabulous collection for you to peruse made up of classics, new, and interesting titles. Didnt buy anything this time, but I had to restrain myself.
Very well-organized and beautiful books. Selection was fairly small and books were a bit pricey, but definitely was worth a visit.
Tiny bookstore in the apartment where faulkner lived. only 12 people can fit in but is a must see. get one faulkner book while there.
Books are list price so a little more expensive if youre used to Amazon or B&N but the place is absolutely beautiful and the bookcase is the most gorgeous Ive ever seen. Beautiful place to visit and shop.
Quaint, clean, and beautiful. The owner of the shop is a sweet woman and ready to help.
Wow - great bookstore. The best.
Charming and historical! The woman working marked her favorite passage in the book I bought with a bookmark too!
Enchanting little book shop with a brilliant selection personally picked up by the owner.
A quiet place where you can just read and think.
Cool, small family owned book store. Support local!
Faulkner and southern writers in general. Heavy on the twentieth century. Dont be intimidated, the first editions are behind glass, everything else you can touch.
I fell in love with this place
Neat! Had to stop in and buy a copy of New Orleans Sketches, even though I already owned one, just because.
I always stop in when visiting and always leave with several books I end up thoroughly enjoying! Such a cool, authentic spot.
Pretty store rude staff
We had apersonal guided tour of Faillners home as well. And lots of books.
Not worth going to if youre a racial minority or do not fit the white, thin and able-bodied persona. A places bookseller does not have to be explicitly racist to tell you you arent welcome in their store. I saw the old white woman go out of her way to help my white friend and another white lady that walked into the store but did not say a word to me or an overweight white woman who walked in. This detail to service had that much of an effect that I decided not to buy a book that I had actually wanted to read and decided that Id find the book elsewhere to not give to a low key subtly racist seller. Its quite odd given that Southern Gothic literature often provides a scathing critique on old Southern racism and yet this store is run by a seller whonis racist, which makes this establishment even more ironic. POC - this place is definitely not for you. Spend your money elsewhere with people that will actually give a damn.
Love the smell. If you love books you know what I mean.
