Amazon has no chance competing with a store like this.Bookstores or not what you expect on Frenchmen Street and this store is definitely unexpected. I felt like I was back in the 1960s bookstore. We’re reading mattered. And customer service was a real thing. I met the owner who was sitting outside interviewing a new employee dressed in a southern beige suit and hat to match. We chatted for a while and then I went inside, and found a diverse mix of books ranging from, about New Orleans to Cajun cooking. I even found an Isaac Asimov novel. The place was immaculate with attention to detail and Covid regulations that made sense including hand sanitizing etc.All in all it was a great bookstore, and the next time I’m in New Orleans we will go back.
Great little neighborhood store tucked into a lively little NOLA neighborhood. Plenty of essentials for quick eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner...and a massive selection of local craft beer, wine, liquor and mixing stuff. No need to pack all your booze for your trip...just buy it here. Friendly staff. This place was a lifesaver on our trip to the Big Easy.
Its a great place! So many cool books. Something for everyone who likes to read. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, and I thought everything was reasonable priced.
Don’t go here. Walked in for a couple seconds and my sister tried to get hand sanitizer using the hand pump (as you would expect with a hand pump, rather than a foot petal) and the lady behind the counter rudely snapped at her. She said she needed to use her foot and sat behind the desk shaking her head, rolling her eyes, like my sister was dumb. Looking at the other reviews it seems like this is a common occurrence. They don’t deserve to have a shop if they don’t even know how to respect paying customers. We left immediately as we didn’t want to give this rude woman our money. Hopefully they take a hint from all the negative reviews.Edit in response to the owner: This is labeled as an art and bookstore. Most people don’t walk into stores expecting to immediately have to look around for instructions. Additionally I would encourage any people with learning disabilities or mental illnesses to avoid this place at all costs. Look how rude and condescending they are to people who may not have been able to efficiently read their directions. What if my sister was blind and your initial reaction was to snap at her and roll your eyes and shake your head? I’m gathering they aren’t inclusive of those with disabilities. It’s not strong in tone, it’s rude and condescending. It’s shocking these people even try to defend their actions when they’re a bookstore that was able to rack up so many bad reviews. Maybe try looking inward for a change!
Honestly, I had a good interaction with the person working in the store. Not trying to discount anyone else’s experience. I found the books I wanted and the young woman who helped me, was very polite. 🤟🏻
What a wonderful bookshop. I felt it had a deep quality variety of books available. As a book worm this was my favorite undiscovered gem in NoLA.
Less than one minute into the store, we left. Consistent with several other reviews, the woman at the counter was rude. She rolled her eyes the minute my daughter used the hand pump and not the very rare foot pump at their sanitation station inside the door. They want to give you vaccination stats, but I just walked in to buy a book, which I didnt. If you are afraid of covid and want to be a fear monger, dont do retail. If you condescendingly shake your head or roll your eyes, most people dont want a book enough to buy from you and can order from Amazon without the eye roll.
Amazing bookstore with an especially kind and caring owner!! Such a special place.
Great selection of books, especially about New Orleans. Ranged from classics and popular books to fun local information and stories. The owner was great to talk to and the art was beautiful. There was also a very cool Oscar Wilde poster.
A chill, unassuming convenience store with a dude in the back who makes a ROCKIN shrimp & oyster po-boy! Off the hook. The roll is so fresh with a lightly crunchy crust. Just a hint of heat on the sauce. Fresh tomatoes and lettuce. Sliced pickles. Perfect 👌
The female employee was rude the second I walked in and snapped at me for looking at a book. I did still look around and didnt find a large variety. Very over priced as well. I found many other books of the local culture at other boutique stores and lower cost. FYI they are also very strict with covid regulations, which did NOT influence my rating one way or the other but I felt people may want to know.
I have never been so offended in a bookstore in my life. I am a New Orleans local who loves the selection of our local authors in this bookstore. I actually work nearby and send people there, but will not again. I was browsing around and an older gentleman, presumably the owner, asked me if I found what I was looking for. I responded that I was just browsing and didnt come in looking for anytjing in particular. He condescendinly explained where the library was and told me I could browse there all I wanted!! Wow! It just makes me angry that he was so rude and judgmental. I bought something I needed amyway, but I am not sure I will go back. I wont ever send anyone there again and will likely tell my friends how horribly I was spoken to in this bookstore. I only give 3 stars because they have a great selection of loval books. Service gets no stars.
Great bookstore! Friendly and knowledgeable staff! Will definitely be going back!
Best Banh mi sandwich I ever had. At first we had a sandwich because it was quick and easy, but we end up having the same sandwich from them 4 times on our 3-day trip. Its awesome please go try their sandwich!
Great bookstore, with diverse books, history, New Orleans, Local authors.Wonderful staff, very friendly.
My partner and I sampled banh mi sandwiches from multiple convenience stores throughout new Orleans and this place had the best value for sure. Only $3.99 for pork, chicken, or tofu banh mi. And their aioli sauce is great!!
Great selection of books — especially loved the books promoting our freedoms and human rights. The owner was great to chat with — very friendly, and open to questioning the narrative.
Very rude woman! Don’t visit this place. Buy from Amazon.
As I sit here at the restaurant sipping my ice cold beer I just can’t help and ponder on how vividly warm i felt while at Frenchman book store!David and Gretchen welcomed me and my friend with open arms and helped me with the most perfect book I knew I was likely to fine! Please don’t look past this amazing shop that is owned by such big hearts!Thank you guys! -A new friend (:
Have enjoyed being able to peruse the shelves in here since I was a teenager. I havent been able to stop in as often as Id have liked though. The eclectic/random find shelves in here are less numerous than they used to be, but are still a joy to pick through and an old favorite way to spend some free time.
The owner us a con artist, thief, Chronic Pathological, hibitual lier, not a good, decent, trusting person.
Great book store! I luv my hat!
Marvelous bookstore specializing in local and radical literature. The owners are lovely people with long and deep roots in the NOLA community. Ill always order from them before resorting to the world-eating monster Amazon.
WONDERFUL little bookstore on Frenchmen St. Theyve got some real gems! We ran into a little SNAFU with delivery to the hotel...no fault of the owners, all fault to the hotel. When I called the bookstore from home (which is quite far from NOLA), the owner was so helpful! He conference called the hotel with me, was very direct in finding out what happened to my books, and made certain that the hotel would be shipping my books to me and that I would be able to get a tracking number. I would absolutely come back to visit next time Im in NOLA.
I love this little nook in NOLA! My partner brought me here after they had first visited the bookstore back in 2011, which was before F.A.B’s renovations. My partner had such an amazing experience and found such a life enhancing book from here, which is the reason they had to bring me here today! Truly a gem. Great independent book store! The owners and the book seller here are so kind, and I loved hearing their storing. I really appreciated how involved and caring these individuals were.✔️LGBQT positive✔️Supports local artist and writers
After I purchased a book here from a personable employee, my wife looked at a photography book. A second employee said, Thats an expensive book. Hold it with two hands. We need indie bookstores, but this is the attitude that drives customers to chains and Amazon.
What a great bookstore and they are open late so I can actually go. Prices are good, the owner is nice and knowledgeable. Lot of local topic books. And great artwork.
This is used to be one of my favorite places to get food. Their customer service was awful the last time I went there. The older guy with the long hair really should not be allowed to work the register. He was literally making rude comments about me having questions about the menu right in front of me. Normally the people here are really nice and the food is really good but the customer service was so bad I was afraid to order from there anymore.
Visited as an out-of-towner. Owner was super helpful and had a great chat with him about some of the prints/records/books. Selection was so interesting I came back and bought more. I would highly recommend for those with interests in NOLA or current issues.
Go for the great music outside... can get better value on Amazon without the condescension and judgement.
Super cute little book store with interesting titles and specialty books regarding New Orleans history. Its open till.midnight on Saturday too.
Proud to see this business in my neighborhood, the marigny. Bookstores are an asset to any neighborhood and this one is no exception. I love stopping in here to just browse the shelves- a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.
Great sandwiches and service, as well as handy items in shop
Neat bookstore filled with local books and culturally rich topics for kids and adults.
This is a small convenient store thats opened late and where you can find inexpensive beer and snacks. Since you can drink on the street on New Orleans, its a great place to stop by for some street libation. Theres also a deli that serves sandwiches and other food items.
Pretty much just another convenience store, except they make fresh po boys that are quite good.
Coolest place on the planet you can have a cosmopolitan served from their eclectic style bottles of lavish cocktails while you wait for your overstuffed delicious po-boy man after a day of digging this totally made my day love it love it love it love it you guys have got to check out Frenchman Street Deli
Cute little shop. The owner is very kind and knowledgeable about the area
Very interesting. The local talent is amazing.
OMG! I got the chicken Vietnamese poboy and my husband got the shrimp poboy and sweet potato fries. Mama Mia they were delicious! $6 and $12.99 respectively for the sandwiches. So yuuuum
Everyone was so nice! Great place to buy a drink. Not a huge selection of snacks. No vegan options.
Been going here for years. Very courteous service.
Charm of the vieux carre mixed with great books and stimulating art.
Great hidden jewel. Very reasonable on their food. We ate there every day after we discovered it.
Fun space, unique items, good book selection
Sells books topical of NO but doesn’t respect the culture of New Orleans. I’m stunned with the handling of the local musicians by the bookstore owner. Kinda seems hypocritical
Amazing curation to immerse yourself in NOLA culture.
Small but interesting selection. Very friendly, too!
I love these guys. Great food!
Chicken bahn mi was awesome!
The only store in the area and they dont open till 10ish. But everything thing else on the street doesnt start till later
The cashier was extremely rude to me. The prices are affordable but they need to step up their customer service!!
Laughable bookstore. I had high hopes too.
This place has the best people and the best food. You wouldnt know it walking in, as its like a convenience store sort of, but we went back here over and over and over!!! Best PHO! Best crawfish! Tons of different foods that are alllll good! Gotta make this place one of your stops for sure.
Empty store. Rude owners. Not worth a visit.
Very friendly service.
Cute little place that has great options for take out!
I think the other review is confused. This is a local LGBT bookstore. Its lovely.
FRENCHMAN D&G has always been my regular stop when working or partying in the French Quarter since I discovered the place after moving to New Orleans 14 years ago. The interior has changed over the years, but the stores approach to business has been consistent. Their prices are higher than convenience stores in other areas, but in comparison to the rates available in other shops in the French Quarter, they are in the lowest range. They provide a partial selection of convenience items like cigarettes, beer/water/soda/juice, candy, and snacks. The deli offers a good range of sandwiches in bun and po boy form as well as a few other items like fries (with or without cheese). The deli style sandwiches like those with sliced meats are the best, especially when dressed. The stuff that they offer as a new orleans deli, like seafood poboys are good, but not overly full or remarkable. But the quality is consistent, the staff are each great people with different personalities though all are professional with a friendly demeanor. The deli doesnt function it seems on Sunday, is the one somewhat understandable issue. Great go-to place in the French Quarter.
Mmmmm the food here is great! and pretty fast.
Terrible owners that don’t respect the neighborhood. Shop somewhere else.
Local gem. The owner is usually on site and great for recommendations.
Great cheap street food.
Good Food but its pricey
Amazing selection and beautiful store!
New Orleans best kept secret when it comes to food ...! Can go wrong with anything on the menu from the kitchen!
Best used bookstore Ive even been too! Great selection of gay literature and erotica.
Quaint store in a great location
Great food cold beer friendly service
Do not spend your money here if you came to New Orleans for music.
Dont give them your money.
Great people running it, good prices, good food.
Good food... Period
The owner is a racist for for what he did to those young musicians.
Authentic corner store grocery and deli. The shrimp po boy sandwich is 💯
Waitress charged me $20 for 2 drinks after quoting $13 upon serving. (one with a single slot & one with a dbl shot in it). What out for this & ask for the mgr
Bought a book. Friendly proprietor
Creepy owner. Made me feel uncomfortable looking for books.
Great store
Cool thanks
Nola charm
Not so friendly service...
The Ban mi is lit!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great wings
A great selection of books and goodies. It doesnt replace Maple Street Books but the selection of New Orleans-related books is pretty great.
