This store is unique in every way, the prices are super high but it’s 24 hour giving you an option to get that one thing you’re missing when you decide to bake brownies or make spaghetti at 4 in the morning. It’s huge and there’s a large selection of oddities, I’ve found many random things I didn’t know I needed and discovered favorites that I haven’t found anywhere else. The staff are often not the friendliest but they’re working overnight so I’m not too critical. It’s great to have a late night option and it’s a fun store to shop.

I thought about giving three because all of the stuff is overwhelming, but the employee did offer to help me find anything on my way in the door. This place also gets points for being “one of a kind” and, obviously a supported member of the neighborhood. I like having this as my store for the next few months, although i doubt I’ll really see EVERYTHING that they have stuffed into this space.

This place is a lot of things. Theres an entire upstairs with all kinds of fun costume supplies for sale. Just be very cautious buying any groceries -- checking expiration dates, etc...but even that isnt a guarantee of product quality and this has been the experience of myself and several friends. They are really cool about returns and refunds though! I just stopped thinking of this place as a supermarket years ago.

One of the BEST Hood Marts in Nola.. This place was a big part of post Katrina rebuild, they fed us while we cleaned the Bywater. Slices of pizza were great 7 years ago. Currently still a ton of coolers full of hundreds of drink items, groceries. Also full of random housewares and food you might need in a pinch.

This is a great place! But what kind of place is it, really? Its listed as a supermarket, but its much, much more. It’s a combination of places, a new-wave fusion kind of place. Its a grocery store/coffee shop/deli/pizza place/dry goods store/costume shop/artisans center/tourist trap ... and also a major local landmark in a neighborhood of local landmarks. Favorites include: wood-fired pizza, large and with thin crusts, made until about 4 am. Deli case entries include lasagna, jambalaya, shepherds pie, mac-and-cheese, beef stroganoff, vegetable curry… and lots of lovely dessert choices, too. There’s a lovely write-up online that tells the story: “Whats in Store: Mardi Gras Zone” by Sarah Ravits (in The Advocate, Mar. 6, 2017)

I used to shop in this store regularly when I lived in the marigny shortly after it opened. Without being in the direct vicinity anymore, I had forgotten the place existed until my ride stopped there when I needed to buy something to drink. For a moment, despite instantly recalling the place, the specifics of the arrangement of the place escaped me completely. A pleasant engaging young guy named Kevin who was manning the register laughed and immediately reacquainted me with the surprising tangenital path of the aisle I needed. No way id have gravitated in the right direction without him! Thanks so much again Kevin, I was glad to stop by a old neighborhood haunt and even more so not to blunder around. :)

Pretty good grocery store to get supplies if you’re staying local. We got most of our vacation snacks here: water, chips, cookies etc. They have a pretty huge selection of drinks, some microwaveables, chips and whatnot. I did grab a bag of expired chips and they were gross and stale, but I didn’t realize it until I got back to where I was staying, so be cautious of that... and I’m sure they wouldn’t taken care of it but it wasn’t worth it to trip back for a bag of chips (lol). They also have a hot deli area with a small selection of sandwiches and whatnot.

I like the products that they offer and its a very unique store. But the prices are so high...the employees dont seem to be very happy and when I found out from a friend how much they get paid I see why. The only discounts I saw were on a shelf full of random expired products. So expensive products but the staff and customers are treated cheaply. For a community that desperately needs an affordable grocery this one unfortunately isnt it but I have a feeling it could be if the wealth was spread around better. The Co-op is also expensive but at least their employees are happy, paid well and have much better people skills and personal hygiene!

Say what you will about this places quality, but Ive seen a marked improvement over the year Ive been patronizing it regularly. The produce selection has expanded in recent months - the owner is making a concerted effort to use primarily local produce and bring in more products from small local farms. So far he has (very pricey) free-range eggs, a good seasonal veggie selection, and some local sausages. The prices vary between cheaper than chains on some commonly-found items and higher than Whole Foods on rarities. Overall, the store is well-stocked with a HUGE organic and growing gluten-free selection, and though the owner can be a bit gruff, I can tell that hes trying to make this a truly local business, which I fully support. When he gets local meats in stock and lowers the price of eggs, Ill give him 5 stars!

I truly wish that zero stars was possible. I have lived in the area for three years now and have given this place multiple chances due to it being very close to where I live. After seeing how expensive everything is (almost insultingly expensive for same things found elsewhere), being chastised by the ignorant gutter-punk employees, and being pursued around the store as I shop as if I was a criminal (after visiting frequently for three years) I have decided to boycott this place and recommend it to no one.

No one should miss a chance to visit Mardi Gras Zone. Look past the non-descript exterior and come inside for vegan meat substitutes, Cajun eggs and sausage, huge bottles of Topo Chico and whatever else you either knew or didn’t know you needed. Before you leave go upstairs. Don’t forget to go upstairs. It’s very important. Only closed on high holy days I believe. 5 stars for selection, culture, character and contribution to the community. No wine to speak of, but beer and liquor can be had.

Review №89

If you know what youre going for and dont mind the frequent issues such as finding bug infestations in the dry food you purchase or brain dead staff members, this place is as OK as any gas station for a last minute pick up. If it wasnt for the owner being so cool (and strangely nonchalant) about returns for the buggy food, I would give less stars. On the bright side, if your kid needs an ant farm for a science project, grab a bag of weevil infested pasta instead. Clear packaging to watch the weevils work and a bargain at $2.59! Kosher? No problem, beetle infested Matzo is also on hand! Im sure there are vegan options as well but is it really vegan if weevils are crawling around your gluten free quinoa rotini? Also, the rules seem to shift here like our coastline. Some days you can buy a beer to take home, other days you have to let them pour it there. The other days seem to fall on holidays... 😏 mm hmm.

The best place to get anything organic, fair-trade or eco-friendly east of Canal street - and at any time of day or night! I would be in love with this store except they are pricey. An earlier reviewer was right - theyre expensive like NYC bodegas, but have a really intriguing large selection of imports and hard-to-find things like Ezekiel Bread or PG Tips (best British tea ever). Very little produce to speak of (some local, none organic), but good enough to pick up the odd bunch of kale or ginger root at 3am. They have cleaning supplies, kitchenware (biodegradable plastic bags!), a small beauty/soap/shampoo section, a tiny pet area, and just odd, useful stuff like incense holders and lamp oil. The first two times I was there I missed the Mardi Gras and camping sections upstairs entirely.I moved from San Francisco and Im having to adjust from the splendid selections of Rainbow and Trader Joes. This place helps fill the gaps. Whole Foods is actually (slightly) cheaper, but too far away and not a local business to boot.

Ok. The stuff in Mardi Zone is expensive. And its not organic or super healthy its just overpriced. The produce looks and tastes old . I ended up buying buttermilk drops that came from another place (2 for $1.00). There was one plain and one red velvet. They tasted decent and were actually cheap. But they were the size of donut holes. Not the nice size drops from a place like Winks or the one on St. Bernard and Broad behind the Churchs near St. Augustine School.
