The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is a cozy little culture center with exhibits that come and go. It is very small and it will not take you long to see everything in great detail. You can knock out two in one with the Mariners Museum on the same campus. The highlight of my visit was the Mayan, Pre-Colombian and the Veracruz Culture exhibits. Some of the artifacts were thousands of years old. Truly mind blowing. The exhibits were also very wheelchair friendly but again the center was very small. So you may want to call ahead to see if a large group maybe scheduled on the day of your visit.
$1 dollar admission through the summer!! What’s not to love? But in all seriousness, they had a beautiful walk around with paths, lush greenery, bird watching programs. On the inside, local young aspiring artists work in different medias. Rembrandt’s etchings we’re detailed and the museum provided magnifying glasses which I had no idea I even needed, but it proved useful the entire time!!
We were very fortunate to see the Wyeth Family art display on its last day.Outstanding!Sure are going to miss this wonderful gem at the end of the year, incredibly sad.
The Wyeth exhibit opened today and it was only a dollar per person. I really enjoyed it. Very nice museum.
The hands on toys exhibit was fantastic. The grandchildren had a great time. We had fun creating things in the craft room. Theres also a scavenger hunt but my grandchildren were a little bit young for it to hold their attention for long. The best thing, it only cost a $1 per person for those above 5.
I really enjoyed the museum it was smaller than I expected but art on display showed more quality over quantity
Great art shows. Always intriguing. I am nervous about what will happen when they are absorbed into the Christopher Newport University world. I like the community days and fun events.
If you havent been here youre missing a golden opportunity. Not very big, but plenty of quality and intriguing art exhibits. Great for the kids too.
Awesome art show- great space
Come here often. Always enjoy the exhibits. This time I brought my 4 year old grandson. He enjoyed the interactive activities, and loved the pirate ship play area outside. It was great fun.
Wythe art exhibition going on. Great family of artists.
Nice display of theme... DREAM HOUSE REMIX. Very creative and eye-catching details in all exhibition rooms. The guide for the exhibit was helpful and gave a lot of insight into some of the work I wish it was a bigger place, but a small place that changes exhibitions often is what I like about the PFAC. Only spent about 45 minutes inside and in the sculpture garden. Love the kids art creation studio for young ones to work with everyday things to create.
The museum and gift shop section is very nice but if youre taking a ceramics class there.... Buyer beware! This place used to be great for taking classes & was pretty dependable about getting your works fired but they have had a change of staffing in the last 6 months & the instruction, communication & service has slid tremendously downhill. I would not recommend this place for ceramics classes.I have had pieces broken, while waiting to get fired, pieces have gone missing & I am still waiting for pieces to get fired that have been there, for 5 months, with no explanation on why these pieces havent been fired. (Lack of communication on their part)This review is for their ceramics classes, Im sure other classes they offer such as jewelry making, needle felting, and painting are still fine to take unless they cleared out those instructors too.
Many interesting things to look at from the far corners of the world. Tours given by college students. They had the best of an recent art competition hanging in the hallway. We went on a school field trip.
My son loved the interactive Toys exhibit. Well definitely return. Staff was very kind and helpful
They had a Chagall exhibit that was awesome especially for children it was active where they play and listen. They had a photo exhibit of the bridges in Paris I believe it was from 1967. It was absolutely beautiful they were all black and white and the statues in the lighting it was just great. And it was a dollar to get in up until Labor Day I believe.
It has a nice set of galleries, but it is pretty small. You can walk through the entire place in about 8 minutes if you only glance at the art. The displays are well done, and there is a variety of art to see, including textiles, photography, and sculpture. The real stand out feature is the interactive kids art area, with a lot of neat resources for kids to play and make some at of their own.
Nice place for exhibitions. Clean. The shop is cozy and they sell interesting and original stuff. I didnt like much the light though. It was dark in the exhibition room and couldnt appreciate the art work holding on the walls.
Excellent local destination with the family on the monthly family days on Sunday afternoons. Great kids activities and programming. The art displays are unique and well put together.
The director gave us a tour of the African art. Two other staff guided us throughout the museum. They were very informative. It was great.
Pros:- Well curated- Interesting exhibits- Good kid-friendly areaCons:- Very small collection- High admission fee for what they have available
Great exhibits, currently the toy exhibit is one of the best Ive seen in quite some time.
My children enjoyed the exhibits about toys! There is a scavenger hunt kids can complete for a prize, ask at the front desk.
Adorable and feels like a secondary home!
Their current exhibition (Toys) was great and the kids enjoyed it as well.
Current exhibits are priceless. Love Paris photographs and Marc Chagalls work!
Great art exhibit, helpful and polite staff. One of my favorite places to visit!
Brought my niece to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center to see the Andy Warhol exhibit several years ago. Worker at the front desk was very welcoming.
Great Camps for children as well as wonderful helpful staff.
Not a whole lot to see, buy the exhibits change out every so often, so its a worth a few visits. Perfect for families with small children who may not do well with longer visits to bigger museums.
Really a great place with beautiful handmadeItems sale.
The peninsula fine arts center is a great place to see featured artists and work of local and nation az l srtist. The center slso offers as ry classes focusing on ceramic potter, painting and glsss art forms. There are some difficulties for handicap presons who would dedire taking ceramic pottery classes ss there is an extensive stairway to climb to get to rhe ceranic studio. There is no elevator available thus anyone wh desired taking classes would be restricted to the classroon on the first gloor. The center also offers as rt programs and activities for clidren of all different age groups. Additionally the will accommodate group parties for children. The center hss recently mergef with Christopher Neepory University . The University is currently working on plans for a new facility. The new facility will include access for handicap and will provide all of the current programs available at the current location.
Wonderful place to visit when its a child and then as an adult and plan to take my own children one day
Staff was excellent and quality of art was fantastic, just not a lot to look at as its a small Museum
Beautiful museum, and noland trail is stunning environment to experience
Awesome place to bring kids to the kids art section. Admission is free first weekend of every month
Very small but nice for $1
Nice little gallery to spend an hour or so at. Also inexpensive.
Way to expensive for such a tiny museum! We got in on the Newport News Ambassador Pass for free and it was still not worth it. We did the whole museum in under 20 minites. Also, the classes are in the $200-$300 range! That is ridiculous. If you have a preschooler, they have a cute paint, chalk, Lego, etc. area in the back.
Very small. Easily less than a one hour visit.
Its such an amazing place to bring your kids and family and the art amazing .
Great art and atmosphere. Offers classes also.
Unfortunately this place is tiny. The lack of space equates to a lack of exhibits.
Wonderful show of less seen Chagall prints.
Great hidden hem! The kids live it.
Very nice place to visit the kids enjoyed it very educational.
Best and if I could give it a ten I would
