Really cute shop. A little pricey, but I havent really done price comparisons... so for all I know the prices could be standard. Lots of neat kits, tools, and books to make your own bread, pasta, kombucha, pickles, butter, cheese, etc.

Visiting the SF/Oakland area, and stopped in to bring a live starter back home. Staff was very friendly and helpful. And my starter is doing great!

Really well curated selection of products and books to make jams, kombucha, vinegar, butter, tinctures, cheese, and other fermented and homemade products. The staff is really knowledgeable and they have a lot of courses you can pay for. While not necessarily the best prices, its nice to not have to buy a dozen jars or lids at once and support a local shop instead of Amazon.

Ordered online from their website - good selection of kombucha supplies, accessories, and unique flavorings. Not the cheapest prices, but overall excellent quality. My order shipped same day and came with a handwritten thank you note! Hope to visit the store in person someday.

What a great little shop. I’ve been pickling home grown peppers and pickles for a couple years and heard about this place only recently. I was on the mission to do some sauerkraut to cap off some home made pastrami I was working on, and decided to check out this shop. What a gem. I wish I went earlier. So many great things and it’s local. Julia was a pleasant and knowledgeable person and helped me get a few things along with some advice. I will surely go back and am pretty pumped on getting into a couple classes there. It’s places like this that make a community and I hope they will be here a long time!

So much of our food culture has its origins in preserving the harvest. Humans have invented so many ways to preserve food and this store carries everything you need to get started. Korean kimchi classes, mason jars, lactic acid bacteria, cheese cloth, salt, etc. Worth the stop.

Owner violates the health order by letting people in their store without wearing masks and talking to them for 20 minutes without a mask on even after I told them that they should make the person wear a mask for everyone elses safety. In their small store their droplets would linger in the air for half an hour exposing everyone that comes to shop there.Ive taken classes here and shopped here in the past but never again. We have a spike in cases and people are dying because of selfish people like the owner. Support a business that cares about your health and the health of our community.

I love this shop and its classes. The first time I went for a Camembert class which was super fun and informative—I especially liked that they sent us home with a wheel to age on our own. The second time was for the kombucha class — they also sent us home with a SCOBY so we could start our own brew right away. The store itself is very well curated—they don’t have a lot of stuff but it’s all stuff you want! It’s an excellent store with a side of experience and I can’t wait to learn more from it 🙂

Where to start?! I went here on a Sunday searching for a few odds and ends for brewing beer and was delightfully surprised at the gem that is Preserved. Although there isnt a super comprehensive collection of actual beer related stuff, she had just what I needed and I left with much more. I want to start doing ALL of the things you can do with the stuff here...Plus, Elizabeth is super knowledgable, helpful, and passionate!Highlights:- Items for people of ALL price ranges. She had super-schnazzy-mega jars and just general use masons and everything in between. Something for everyone.- Elizabeth knows a TON about this stuff. I felt bad picking her brain as she offers classes often which take place at the shop, but shes passionate and super friendly so it was natural.- Tastings. She let me taste some of the booch she was making and some water that used a filter offered there.Heres a little rundown of what was available:- Specialty jars: All very functional and very pretty. Some were for pickling, some were just cool all glass sealing for general use, some for Kombucha. Within each type there were many to choose from.- Kits: Full setups to make beer/wine/mead/cider/vinegar/etc, incl the jugs, airlocks, racking canes, cultures, flavors, grains, seeds, funnels, mothers, etc. etc. etc.- Sprouting- Kefir (water & otherwise)- Yogurt & cheese (vegan options too)- Books and more books- Bone broth (so hip)I am missing so much but check out the website or give them a call! Actually yeah, just go in.If it is a style of DIY food making, they probably have it, and they probably have literally everything you need as a beginner or advanced maker of things.Absolutely worth a visit.

Elizabeth has a passion for all things pickled and preserved, and she shares that passion with all who enter her lovely little shop. Preserved is the only place around to both learn how to make your own kombucha/kimchee/kefir and get all the supplies youll need to make it at home. With all the foodies in Oakland, Im sure you will find something for yourself or a gift for a friend. Check out their class list, most Thursday nights and Sunday mornings. Its always something fun you didnt know you could make at home!

Wonderful local resource for all things fermentation. Conveniently, that overlaps with all sorts of more generally culinarily useful things – canning jars, crocks, microplanes, mortars + pestles, seeds, seasonings, and of course preserves both savoury and sweet. Oh yeah, and some great cookbooks too.Though they take up only a small portion of the store, their food offerings are surprisingly diverse, with misos, krauts, sauces, kombucha, kefir, and flour. Some of these are of exceptional quality (South River miso, Capay Mills flour), while others are not (namely, House kombucha).Pricing here is about average, and the staff is very knowledgable and helpful.Looking forward to a return trip.
