If you an ice cream lover, you must stop by this place to finish up your food tour in the Reading Terminal Market! This ice cream is much better than the Franklin fountain (overrated)! This place take card, must quicker service, and the price is much reasonable than the other place!!We had one scoop of each flavor:- Coffee Fudge Truffle (with Guatemalan Ripple)- Pomegranate & Blueberry CrunchThen, we put them on the “Peanut & Chocolate coated” waffle cone!Highly recommend to try the “Coffee Fudge Truffle” flavor if you love coffee! I really loved it because it was really rich & aromatic in coffee; plus, I want my ice cream to be entertained while eating, so it should be either crunchy or chewy, and the fudge part was really chewy!!
Bassetts Ice cream is the first commercially distributed ice cream shop in the country and is putting out some tasty and creamy ice cream flavors that are sure to delight! Located inside Reading Terminal Market, this is their only storefront where you can buy their ice cream over the counter in cones or pints! Their atmosphere is classic and clean and they have televisions where they display their history of ice cream making and how they got started. This is a special place and a gem in the ice cream capital of America so definitely check them out and see what they have to offer! My wife and I both got cones. She had a cake cone with Butterscotch Vanilla ice cream and I got a specialty chocolate dipped, chocolate sprinkle waffle cone with Salted Caramel Pretzel ice cream. My wifes ice cream was good and the vanilla was rich and smooth. I wish there was more butterscotch swirl like they show in their website because it was mostly vanilla ice cream with thin, light swirls. You could barely taste the butterscotch. My ice cream had a caramel swirl that WAS like the picture online as you can see in my pictures. It was oozing with tasty salted caramel and had bits of chocolate covered pretzel bites throughout. I especially like that their vanilla ice cream base is made with real vanilla as you can see the little black vanilla speckles in the ice cream. The cone was also good and had plenty of chocolate flavor but wasnt anything different than any other dipped sprinkle cone you can get anywhere else. The service was nice and quick. She gave us plenty of ice cream for the price. My only gripe would be that I wish they had a one scoop option as they only have two or three scoop options and they are massive portions and our ice cream was melting all over us by the time we got to eating our second scoop hahaOverall, because of its history, this is definitely a place you should check out. Their ice cream is good and creamy and loaded with mix ins (if you get the right one anyways lol) they have all their flavor options online but Im not sure if they serve all flavors at their brick and mortar location. Check out the Reading Terminal Market while youre there!Food - 4.5 ⭐Atmosphere - 5 ⭐Service - 5 ⭐Overall - 5 ⭐Follow me for more reviews across America 😎🍔🍕🍨🍦🦖🔧
Bassetts makes the greatest ice cream. Period. Unfortunately, the people who work at this counter are not representative of the wonderful product. At 8 months pregnant, I excitedly had the day off and ordered 6 pints of ice cream to pick up. They did not have all the flavors I ordered so they called and told me to come by the next day. I live an hour away and hoped I could get there after work but it didn’t work out. The following week, I finally had time off to make it down. When I arrived, I was rudely informed that a refund has been issued. I asked if I could still get my order and not be refunded and I was told “we can’t hold on to ice cream forever” as if that explains why I was not notified about the refund or why I could not place my order again.I will continue to recommend Bassetts ice cream but I encourage whoever is in charge of staffing to train their employees on how to interact with customers. Notifying customers that their order has been canceled would be helpful too. I cannot believe the terrible impression this has left after being a customer for years.
Very delicious ice cream! They were pretty busy but the service was pretty quick. I got the salted caramel pretzel flavor and it was wonderful! The ice cream held up pretty well for a very hot day walking around the city. Highly recommended!
Delicious ice cream and huge portions! The price is reasonable when you see how much ice cream you get. I got two scoops on a waffle cone and there was so much ice cream on it that we had to put it in a cup, and even then it was still overflowing. Delicious!
After being royally disappointed in two food vendors, one at Sansom street and the other at the Reading Food Terminal, we decided to drown all our sorrows in ice cream.Staff at Bassetts Reading Terminal ice cream shop were super friendly and the scoops were decent but not generous. Two scoops each of strawberry and irish mint flavored ice cream came up to $12. The ice cream itself was not overwhelmingly loaded with sugar, it was very moderate on the sweetness scale which was good. Flavors were pretty good as well... you could actually taste the mint and strawberries which were on point. It was almost closing time and experience felt a bit rushed but definitely looking forward to a second trip to Bassetts Ice Cream in the near future if all the stars align.
Really great ice cream! Some of the best we’ve ever had!
Tried the mint chip And Raspberry truffle years back when i was in the US with fam. Utterly, utterly scrumptious. Im waiting on you guys to open up shop in India. Any idea when that days coming, Bassetts?
Placed an in line order for pick up on Saturday 5/15 because my son requested Bassetts mint chip for his graduation party from LaSalle. Pick up was a breeze at the market. Of course we ordered some Guatemalan Ripple, Vanilla, and Raspberry Truffle, too! DELICIOUS! Perfection!
First time at this historic Ice cream shop. Basset’s is supposively the very first ice cream parlor in the USA and the milk shake was anything short from amazing! I had the toffe milkshake it had Heath bar crunches with English vanilla toffee and caramel drizzles. My date had the peanut butter dream I tasted it that as well it was YUMMY! The customer service was on point and their pretty fast the wait was not that long. The milkshake was definitely the highlight of my day! I’ll definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fulfilling delightful desert! I plan on coming back her very soon!!
The ice cream was really good. The only downside was that they were missing a lot of things on the menu (no shakes, no oreo ice cream, no heath bar topping, etc)
One of the oldest ice cream jawns in America and it was awesome. Tasty flavors and the ice cream is delicious. Great City Center spot
Got a mint chocolate chip cone and holy cow, one scoop was more than generous! Friendly staff, fast service and delicious ice cream. Ate the cone so fast I forgot to take a picture!
The ice cream is delicious, never dissapoints. If you are near the Reading Terminal Market, make sure you stop here for some icecream
Bassetts ice cream is rare location wise and taste wise. If you love ice cream, you will be addicted to the creamy flavors. I had the butterscotch vanilla and the salted caramel, chocolate pretzel ice cream 😍. The double scoop on a sugar cone costs $5.50. Its in the Reading Terminal. If you dont like to wait, the line isnt bad tho, order online for a quick pickup of the pints.
Absolutely delicious! Staff is very nice too!!
I was hoping they had the Matcha ice cream but they didnt have any. :(. But I tried the vanilla and it was okay.
The people working there are incredibly rude. I got in line at least 15 minutes before they closed and there were only 3-4 other families in line. I was standing in line for a few minutes and then this rude woman told me there was no more after the family in front of me. There was no sign or anyone telling people not to get in line and I don’t get how hard it would have been to take by order when I was by myself.
I have worked in the restaurant industry my entire life and have enjoyed my share of excellent ice creams over the years, Bassetts consistently delivers the highest quality, best tasting ice cream I have ever had! Its extra creamy and always delicious. I have several pints in my fridge at all times. Their dark chocolate chip is perfection!
Staff rude and not helpful. Signs should reflect sold out items. Love your ice cream, walked away not purchasing because of staff and lack of product.
Overpriced milkshake and for what? Lack of taste
Phenomenal quality and great flavors. Glad to see they have the staples of the ice cream world. Quick, friendly service and multiple shade trees were the bonus after a warm NCR trail ride, highly recommend Bassetts Ice Cream.
Amazing ice cream and so classically Philly.
Great homemade ice cream and good service
Smooth and creamy, but thick where the spoon holds the whole cup up. A little on the pricey side at 5$ for a kids. But its delicious.
Five stars for the ice cream - a butter scotch ribbon courses that particular flavor like gold vein in a Nevada mine - but three stars for the paucity of outlets stocking Philadelphias premier all-weather treat.According to cityhallistas who take taxpayer fam-trips for the Department of Commerce, Bassetts is sold in China yet no longer shelved in Shop Rite freezer-cases.Shouldnt loyal local generations get first bite over developing markets far afield?Even the most poorly-run households let children get their licks in ahead of strangers.
Yummy iced cream, local institution! Love that they are so involved with the community. Could probably make the seating more pleasant and welcoming... its kinda lost its charm. Still we come back when the craving hits, we just dont stick around.Bassetts Ice Cream.
Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. I look forward to going back again. Prices are appropriate for the quality.
The sprinkles. Damn I could eat them straight. I need more of their sprinkles. ‘nuff said
Closed too early, you need later hours please
Great first visit. Huge line, for good reason, but very efficiently managed. Service was very friendly. Prices werent bad considering the location. We had the birthday cake and mint chip. Would recommend going with the fresh waffle cone as a splurge. Next time would love to try a shake too. Must stop if you are at Reading Terminal Market.
The best ice cream I have had in a long time, not overpriced. Good quality
One of the oldest ice cream places around (supposedly the first ice cream parlor in the U.S.). Known for a vast variety of creamy flavors. I only give them 4 stars because I have a personal preference for Franklins Fountain and was slightly underwhelmed by the amount of flavor in their ice cream. Was a little overwhelmed by the creaminess of their ice cream and was looking for more flavor.
Best ice cream ever. My first five star rating on Google, that must help you understand how highly I rate this place. They serve one of the best ice creams. Staff are professional since they are super busy, please dont expect small talk from them. Staff are clear and crisp with their conversations. Prices are decent and quality of the ice cream is very goodHighly recommended
Bassetts lce Cream is the best
Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. had a friend come into town and she asked me to take her here again. the prices are good for what you get. food is similar to a cafe in portland i liked.
Awesome staff and exceptional ice cream! Will be back. If you ever have a chance to try one of the specialty shakes please do! Amazing 👌.Would highly recommend!
Service is excellent even when they are busy. Staff treated us so kindly. Feeling here is like a restaurant in Fort Worth I liked.
What an amazing place .Actually i have visited here many time and tried almost every flour of ice cream all were superb. The price was good for that much yummy ice cream. So i would like to recommend this to all the ice cream lovers who would like to taste varieties of flavor.
Sure its inside Reading Terminal, which if youve been in Reading Terminal youll know that this place is packed no matter what time of day. The service here is quick and they have free water pitchers which is nice. The ice cream tastes amazing. Thick and creamy and full of flavor. Give it a try. You wont be disappointed.
Had seen this place on travel channel, so I had been waiting to go for years. My sis and I went to Reading last Wednesday afternoon and i must say the ice cream was THE BOMB. I had the pistachio, which had pecans in it,(so good) and the birthday cake which is prbly one of the best ice creams Ive ever had. The pricing was very reasonable and we hit the market on a day when it wasnt very crowded. Will definitely return!
This was our final dessert stop at the market when we were in town traveling for work.Their flavors looked unique and interesting. The line was really long when we first got there, but it died down by the time we were ready to get some. They have a section of vanilla flavors which I thought was nice since I dont like chocolate. Unfortunately this led me to believe they were non chocolate flavors and that was not the case.We got salted caramel pretzel and peanut butter swirl. They dont tell you the pretzels are chocolate covered so I didnt eat any of that flavor. The peanut butter swirl was ok but it just wasnt my favorite base ice cream. The service was very rushed and you couldnt really see the ice cream you were ordering.Overall, not a bad place just not really my cup of tea.
Quite simply, the best ice cream in the world. The pleasant service is an added bonus. Ive been a regular for 40 years. Yummy!
Service was friendly and fast, and the scoops were big and tasty. There are many unusual flavors to choose from. I had two scoops, one peach and one cinnamon, and both were great.
This place caught our attention as soon as we walked by while exploring the market. We had it on our way out and luckily just walked right up to order with no line! I had the cinnamon & mint and chip my husband had all cinnamon. The cinnamon flavor was perfect, not overpowering and not too sweet. We would definitely return to Bassetts. The only down side of our experience here was the service, the 3 young men working were so unfriendly and were getting irritated when we asked questions about the flavors and ice cream cones. Other than that we enjoyed this shop!
THE best pistachio ice cream Ive ever had with fantastic fast service! I had never rated on google which says how good it was. It isnt cheap but it was absolutely worth it!
This place is located inside the reading market. Its an old ice cream brand thats been around the times of president lincoln. I had a good experience...the staff was nice. My only concern would be the limited ice cream flavors. Most of the flavors here are basic flavors that you can literally get anywhere. But this shop is a cute place to go with friends and children. I would come again here.
Very delicious. Next time Ill be back with my coworkers. It has a good atmosphere.
Food was so delicious. It has a good interior. Feels similar to a restaurant in New York I loved.
Ill return with my friends. prices are appropriate for the quality. they have a lot of good reviews for a reason.
Ordered coconut and basil chocolate chip flavors. They just felt typical, nothing special. We found them slightly too sweet for us too, but then I guess that was typical American.
Got 2 scoops of butter pecan. my favorite
Great selection of ice cream flavors, small portions for what they charge. We had the cookies & cream and the vanilla flavors, both were very good, creamy not too sweet with no freezer burn. The staff is super friendly and helpful and theyll let you sample the flavors.
Fast service and great flavours. Ice cream felt a little bit icy, but all in all a great experience. ℹ️ Fifth generation family business thats been around from 1861.
We stopped at the location in the Reading Terminal Market during a visit to Philly. Have seen this place on those food channels before, so we had to try some. We were not disappointing. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes ice cream!!
Bassetts is arguably not only the oldest ice cream maker in America it is the very best ice cream in the USA and perhaps the Worlds Best. It is without a doubt the creamiest, richest ice cream I ever have eaten and I have had ice cream in many places on at least 5 continents.
Delicious creamy ice cream with relatively wide selection of flavors. They let you sample whichever flavors you want first so that was nice!Fast and friendly service.Relatively high priced.
Ice cream was very good and the price is reasonable but I would not go back there ever again. We went 10 min. prior to close. My son wanted a shake. The guy said they ran out of milk. While waiting for our order, a couple people ordered shakes at the next register. When they made them i saw the fridge had at least 10 gallons of milk. The guy lied because he was too lazy to make the shakes. I will never order Bassetts again.
Very good, but not as good as Franklin Creamery...even on a hot day go for a walk.
Food with real quality ingredients. the place has a great atmosphere. food is like a restaurant in jacksonville i liked.
I usually am a custard fan but this ice cream was as smooth as butter. I was so surprised, easily the best ice cream I have eaten. It is not about the gourmet toppings or mix-ins(they are average here) as it is more about the wonderful traditional underlying ice cream recipe.
I had an ice cream social for my 30th birthday party and the staff was so friendly, they let me sample an obnoxious amount of flavors so I could chose the perfect ones for my party. Every single flavor was exemplary. Bassets is the best ice cream in Philly!
I mean, it’s ice cream. Of course it’s delicious!
Better than I thought it was going to be. I tried the salted caramel pretzel. It was petty darn good. After eating a cheesesteak, the two scoops (that’s a small) was a little too much for me. But you should go for it!
Really great! Come hungry, theres lots to try. Also, you have to go inside the terminal to find it.
A favorite evening place of mine. Really nothing but enjoyable experiences here, Ill be back. Menu is like a cafe in Indianapolis I liked.
Poor service!! Me and my sister-in-law stood there for five minutes before walking away WITH NOTHING..... all four employees were just standing talking not even realizing that we were waiting to have our order taken ....A short heavy set female was using Profanity addressing another female in the conversation!!This is totally unacceptable for a “family” run place
Not sure why this place had a long line. Maybe it’s the only ice cream shop in reading terminal market? I thought it was so so. It’s just simple ice cream. Nothing really special.
This is hands down my favorite place to get ice cream in Philly. The butterscotch vanilla and macadamia nut are to die for and I like the bar-style seating. You might have to wait in line for a few minutes but it is definitely worth it.
I have read so many comments about this ice cream and was looking forward to trying them out but I was deeply disappointed at every level.First of the guys working there are not customer oriented and should not be given a job in customer service. A janitor is much more friendly than these idiots. No respect to any of the customers and they are EXTREMELY RUDE. The customers pay to buy these ice creams and they forget that customers pay for their pay. If customers dont come, they will not be working there. I will never hire people in this shop to even clean my floors. Absolutely pieces of trash. The ice creams are not to good either. I have tasted ice cream far far better at a side shops on the street that was better than this. In my opinion they should stop selling these ice creams as the best. THEY ARE NOT THE BEST. TRUST ME ON THIS. Poor example for ice cream.Save your money and go to somewhere you are considered a valuable customer. Even DQ ice creams are better and the customer service is far better than this place. You will thank me for not going to Bassett Ice cream Shop. They have lost their focus. I WILL NOT BE GOING THERE AGAIN.
Good ice cream and a nice selection of flavors. The ice cream is very smooth and creamy. The prices are about average for quality ice cream in a big city. The location had limited hours due to its location inside the Reading Terminal Market.
I arrived at Reading Terminal with a stomach ache and left with two scoops of ice cream. If anything, this is a testament to Bassetts hold on my heart. I have early memories of sitting at the counter with a cone of peanut butter swirl in hand, utterly content. The eggnog was creamy, smooth and delicious, and I ate it happily despite the cold weather and a long walk. I will always buy an ice cream cone from Bassetts when Im in the vicinity. No matter how intense the wind chill is or how far I have to walk. -Kiley BenseGreen tea ice cream, one of the most popular ice cream flavors in Asia, can not be too sweet... which sort of goes against the American concept of ice cream. I was therefore skeptical about trying the green tea ice cream at Bassetts, an all-American ice cream maker dating back to 1861. I realized my skepticism had been for naught after first lick. The perfectly creamy ice cream had the unmistakable taste of green tea with, lo and behold, just a hint of sweetness! The ideal pick-me-up when you want something decadent, without the typical sugar rush. -Elliott Brooks
Ice cream was good but Id suggest to stay away from the lemon sorbet. Had a weird flavor and an artificial aftertaste
Best icecream ever! It is very rich and I havent had a bad one yet. I go every time Im in the city.
I have to admit every single flavor is great but the ULTIMATE best flavors areButterscotch VanillaSalted Caramel PretzelPomegranate BlueberryBanana!!!!The ice cream is so creamy nd smooth an just delicious!! I promise you will N.O.T be disappointed at ALL.Not to mention the chocolate that is used to dip the cones ( in which they dip them their selves nd decorate in yummy jimmies,, crushed Butterfingers,, crushed oreos,, nd peanuts ) yes that chocolate it is SUPER breath taking no word of lie.Oh nd guess what,,You can sample ANY nd EVERY flavor you want. Iam telling you its totally amazing nd definitely well worth it.I would recommend Bassetts any day even in a winter blizzard which FYI they are open all year round! So stop what ur doing now that ur done reading this nd get yourself over to Bassetts.
On-par with Brusters and Blue Bell. Ok, I think Blue Bell is better. Its really good iced cream. I had Rum Raisen, Pralines and cream, and Salty Caramel Pretzel. Skip the Rum raisin (hardly had any rum or raisin). Is it the best Ive ever had? Well, not quite in my subjective opinion. Does it belong among other great food options in the Reading Terminal? Absolutely. If youre in the mood for legit iced cream and eating at the Terminal then you wont regret it.
Good ice cream, varied cone/cup/float selection and fast service. Ice cream is a tasty creamier than standard, but not VERY noticeable until you try the chocolates, then it is like a a dream!
Great ice cream, but service is horrible. I was at the Reading Terminal location on 6/29/18 around 3pm with out-of-towners and was embarrassed by the way the guys serving the ice cream were acting (throwing boxes down the stairs from the stock room, being rude to customers, and acting like silly elementary kids...especially the 2 Latino guys....I am Latino so its not a racial issue). I was given the wrong order and when I told the guy he gave me attitude; much less ice cream in the second cup of ice cream with much more negative attitude. Lucky I do not manage that store as they would be gone. Never again!
Best icecream ever !
Bassetts Ice Cream in the Reading Terminal is life! The lines are long, but worth the wait. My favorites are the banana and dark chocolate.
The staff is rude. The girl that took my order was very impolite and had a major attitude.Pants hanging below the waist of a rude latino. When I pointed out he broke my waffle cone and only filled it halfway up he said, its really isnt a big deal, its really not. And he stuck the waffle cone inside of another cone, then into a cup.Visited 9/2 @430 pm
