Really nice placeIts open for self guided tours - you get a helmet and prerecorded audio on a phone, and off you go to the mine! Its until the very end of the tunnel - which is rare for all the gold mines Ive had a chance to tour so farA few of the lights didnt work - so you may need to use the flashlight in your phone to look at the spots you are supposed to be looking at (otherwise its very well lit)They also have a full size stamper mill 5 minutes walk away - in the price of the mine ticket - its a bit uphill, but its good enough for a short walk (there is trail which leads directly to the parking in front of the stamper mill)Behind the mill theres blacksmith workshop - its really nice. The blacksmith can teach you real skills if youre interested!
Currently only open on weekends! We followed the open times online but alas the physical sign at the mine says otherwise so plan ahead! The trails are really fun and go into the forested area, there is also a blacksmith on site who is working.Keep your eyes out for turkeys, they like to waddle around this area too.
Took my son w/ disabilities here because I think its the only mine shaft I have ever seen thats wheelchair accessible. The whole family had a blast. With the new COVID restrictions only one group is allowed in the mine at a time so that gave me free reign to take some really cool photos on BW Film posted below. Staff is friendly and very accommodating. Again if you have someone wheelchair bound that would like to do some simple spelunking this is the place to be because its pretty ADA setup compared to any other places we have been. Very happy fun little place. Its good for 1 or two hours with kids and thats about it :)Check out the blacksmiths up the hill, thats also a really cool little setup they have up there.Highly recommended if you;re looking for a low key easy 1 or 2 hour trip with or without the family... :)
The mine tour was perfect. From the history to the cold air, its perfect for a hot day. The gift shop is perfect for rock and gem lovers. The owner is an enthusiast as well. The blacksmith did an awesome job of shaping a horse pin into a salt spoon and the mill attendant was extremely knowledgeable. He ensured we learned a ton in a short amount of time. Overall, this was one of the best parks weve ever been too.
Did mine tour and millsite and blacksmith shop. All employees were great. Ask about history and mining and you will be rewarded with great information. Mine is a short tour. Great material and quartz vein.
Really neat mine. Self guides, parking out front, and Blacksmith shop above. Well worth it
It was a nice drive up. Very interesting place, they have a self walk tour in the mine. You hook up to their app and internet to listen to it. They also have a blacksmith and mill there, they gave a tour and explained how it was all done. The gift shop was very affordable. Very friendly and a great learning experience
Self guided tours with an ipod. Kids like it. They had more fun doing the gem panning. The store has great prices.
Good place to explore and learn about gold and. The way workers worked to find gold.
Staff are very friendly and informative! Was fun to do
A quiet picnic spot.
The most amazing time at the blacksmith shed with Drew and Carter giving us a demo of blacksmith skills and personal talk about the dying art of blacksmithing.
The audio tour of the mine is solid... Lots of details and plenty to see. We even found a little lizard hanging out. The mine is cool even on a hot day and the path is easy to walk. The highlight of the trip was Pat in the stamper mill and blacksmith shop. Great guy with lots of knowledge. I could have stayed and chatted with him all day.
Tried to go on a “first come, first serve tour” but apparently you have to get to the park at 12pm and reserve a spot. Very misleading on the website and the two ladies working there were rude. Was excited to go but maybe I’ll wait a couple of years to see if it is a better experience...
What a fantastic field trip!!! The staff was so organized, helpful, knowledgeable and loved what they did!!! I cant wait to take my family for a day hike!
Neat place to go semi hiking
If I could I would put zero. 9 dollars for the tour, about 15 minutes of explanation on an application that is only in English and we stay about 5 minutes cause its only 150m of visit. They even not put fake gold for fun. AND THEY CALL IT A MINE. A MINE.Dont pay for that! The rest is cool and a little interesting. But it doesnt take more than 1hour and a half but its free. (More if you want to have a long walk on the trail but we didnt test it)
Fun place
Really fun experience! staff was super friendly and told us a lot about the mine and its history. Be sure to walk up the hill to the silver mine, blacksmith and ore professing facilities.
Great way to calm down a hyper child: mine, hike, panning, blacksmith!
Thanks to Cindy and all the team for looking after us during our visit (gosh I hope I have her name right). The mighty John up at the Blacksmith was a brilliant gentleman showing us his craft. Keep up the great work everyone, we had a great time.
I adore this small & very historical park. Very nice to visit on a hot summer day & have a picnic. Filled with different varieties of indigenous birds & wildlife, which will visit you, if you sit very still & notice them!! The docents are well informed. Most California residents do not know that El Dorado County is referred to as The County that made California Great due to the discovery of GOLD! A happy place!
Nice small gold rush mine. Great volunteers. Be sure to tour the stamp mill and blacksmiths shop.
Charlie Basham was our tour guide and I dont think Ive ever enjoyed a guided tour more. Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable that it made time fly by. I STRONGLY recommend this stop over for all parents, junior geologists, and history buffs
Historical fun for the kiddos! Gold panning was inexpensive and super fun! The mine was cool too! Just make sure that you bring a jacket for inside! Make sure to take a look in the gift shop and to visit the blacksmith!
A little short but when we went to the blacksmith building, thats when the experience started to shine. The workers there loved talking about the old times and it was a treat hearing about all the stories back then.Oh, when the guy talks about the rock crushing rig and shows you the little demo, point to the wanted poster titled, Black Bart he loves talking about him lol
This place is amazing. The mine tour will make you feel like its 1849. If you ever wanted to learn something about the gold rush in a fun way, this is it. Try to arrange a tour as going self guided wont give you nearly as much cool information and you will miss out on a ton of hidden things. I could easily see how self guided would be a huge letdown.
Mellow small park that if you walk the trails and visit the museum and blacksmith house you can enjoy a few hours there. The bathroom is closed during winter hours but they have port-o-potties available. The one mine you can tour has a small fee ($4 for kids and $7 for adults) and takes about 10-15 to tour. The main gate says it closes at 5 and the one up the hill closes at 4.
If youve never been to a mine this is a fun way to spend a couple of hours. The kids loved panning for gems. Its also pretty inexpensive so thats a plus!
Gold Bug park is a gorgeous expanse. It is much larger than it appears when you park. There are some fun activities for small kids, and plenty of places to explore. I love stopping here whenever I pass through Placerville.
Nice place to do some light walking. Shady walkways. Lots of butterflies and other wildlife. Plenty of area history to explore. We ran across a baby skunk on our walk. It was only a week or two weeks old. Cutest little thing you ever saw. Too bad its a skunk.
A nice place to visit. Theres a short unguided mine tour with earphones. An old mine process. A picnic area and gift store. Fun to do at least once.
Interesting and great to be able to go in mine. Easy walk in the mine, its not going down much. Watch your head though... The volenteers in the park were very nice and gave a lot of info.
An amazing piece of Gold Rush history, this small park offers a self-guided tour of the former gold mine, and has a small mining museum. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. A must see!
Gold mine itself just OK but 5 stars for Richard at Stamp Mill building and Jocelyn at Blacksmith Shop. Those 2 people are extremely knowledgeable, funny and friendly, very interesting for kids and adults.
Pure calif history. Its not a huge place but full of gold mining history. Great little gift shop too
It was a great place to learn about the gold and pioneer times. A nice hike up a hill and you can see a black smith and look at gems found around Basecamp
Really great place to stop. Wish we had the whole day. Definitely take mine tour which is self guided.
Charming old town still has much to admire over 100 yrs since people were bustling through in a gold rush economy.Today had alot of fun down at Greenwood Creek with the family and would definitely do it again.
Beautiful park with stamp mill and blacksmith shop. Unfortunately the hours listed here were wrong and we couldnt visit the mines. The mines are currently only open during the weekends.
Had a great time! Loved pat! Very informative, learning about black bart was fun
Very friendly staff. The last at the stamping mill was extremely information and interesting to learn from. Nicely done.
Great little spot to visit or to take out-of-towners! Dont know why bug is in the name, there are no insects on display here, but lots of information on the gold rush and an actual mine you can walk into. I am slightly claustrophobic, but I did not have a problem with this mine, its not too deep and fairly spacious! You take the residential streets and end up here. I dont recall the exact price for the mine entrance, but everything is very reasonable. In fact, to rent a pan and sift through for gold and gems (theyre planted), it only costs $2 an hour. You sift through a wooden trough with other prospectors hoping to strike it rich.I didnt find any gold, but found some quartz, calcite and some other stuff. There is a large picnic area for groups and flushing toilets. Yay! The surrounding forest area is beautiful and its just nice to be in nature. The gift shop is reasonably priced. You can purchase different rocks, glass eggs ($3), rock candy ($1.25), postcards, books on rocks, maps, etc. I was chatting to the woman in the store and she said last year they had visitors from all 50 states and all over the world! She didnt know how people found out about it...
The Gold Bug Park is a really good place to go to. You can access a mine and go into the gift shop. Really, its awesome!
Its a great slice of California History. I wish I could have spent more time here on my trip. I plan on coming back.
They have closed all but one mine. And the seasonal Creek is completely filled with cattails. Not as good as it once was.
Small site but with several really interesting historical artifacts to see. Staff are exceptionally helpful and informative, we learned a ton about mining for gold.
Great self-guided tour of a gold mine. Staff will advise guests to download an app on their smartphones using Goldbugs wifi to play the audio for the tour. The temperature in the mine is stable and will feel quite cool in a summer day.
It only open Saturday and sunday clearly marked on a hand carved sign.
Went for a field trip. Amazing!!
Kids love this place, grownups love this place.Rocks, gold, mines & blacksmithing, what more does a field trip for 4th graders need? Wonderful tour guides? Nope because they have those!
Scam. Paid $20 for the tour and then after the old guy took my money, I realized the tour was closed when we got in the mines and there was nowhere to go, everything was blocked off and all I discovered was a straight 20-ft tunnel with a dead-end. I got SCAMMED! Thanks for stealing my money! Next time tell paying customers you cannot provide a tour BEFORE YOU TAKE THEIR MONEY
Very interesting. Make sure to visit the blacksmith shop too!
Super awesome experience! I need to go back and check out the rest of the park!
Fascinating place, so worth going to! It is a real abandoned gold mine, that you can go into.
Fun out in nature and cool mines!
Kids loved panning for gold and jewels and the docents were welcoming
Neat little gift store. Ate lunch at the picnic area.
Boring, short, uninteresting. Not worth the money. The self guided tour narrator was also pretty bad.
3 Hour round trip for a 10 minute walk only to be kicked out because of a kids on tour. The guide was rude and very disrespectful to other adults besides me. To be in character is 1 thing but flat out rude was a huge waste of time and money would not even rate this as 1 star.Very poor control of how to operate a park. Thanks for showing how to be rude in front of all those kids.It is no wonder kids grow up now a days and act the way they do. Good example!
Had such a great time! Loved the trails!
Its great for the kids and family.
A great place to learn about the history of the Gold Rush.
This is a nice tourist experience.
Excellent tour friendly knowledgeable docents
Really cool place to visit.
Fun adventure with great and knowledgeable workers
Drove thru will definitely be back
Have you heard of LED light bulbs? Its way too dark in your mine.
Awesome historical site for families.
The mine is so tiny, it would take you literally 2 minutes to go one way and back, and $7 entrance is just way too much. I came here with my husband and were really disappointed.
Cool history, nice trails.
Its was a great time
Nice though strenuous hiking.
Wonderful place to wander around
Worth it. Kill an hour or two here.
Pretty cool for a quick visit
Very interesting and informative.
Its mineing. Ways back in the days
I went there and its awsome
Go see it a lot of history
Grumpy people who worked there put a damper on the outing.
Pat, the docent was awesome
I love it!!
No crowds and great hospitality
