Not bad for a local art showcase, with semi monthly shows of talented, well known, established local artists. However, this grant funded public organization is poorly run and has alienated volunteers and members of their Artist Network by unceremoniously cancelling the membership of those who disagree with the director on such basic issues as staffing and volunteer opportunities. A former longtime volunteer who was scheduled to teach a class was told several days before that the class would be restaffed (no warning) and when they asked questions as to why the decision was made, was asked to turn in the Studio key and was given a police escort. Poorly managed for a publicly funded project!
Artists are not treated with respect lies are prevalent from the director especially. If you value the artist as much as the art, then you will by pass this place altogether. There are many galleries that treat their artists with common decency. Patronize those galleries and put places like this out of business.
We just attended the opening reception of yet another outstanding exhibition, and I realized how much I look forward to seeing whats new at Studio 1219, and theres always something new. Opening receptions are open to the public, free, often a local whos-who, and almost always the artists are present and available to talk to.Many local fine artists are represented as well as artists from elsewhere in Michigan. Youll find pottery, stained glass, blown glass, sculptures in wood and other materials, paintings, photography, jewelry, mixed media and more. Prices range from remarkably affordable to aspirational. Some pieces will make you wonder, Howd she do that? Others might make you think, WHY did he do that? Whatever the range of possible reactions, almost everyone will be completely engaged during an hour spent at this friendly place on the south side of Port Huron. The studio also offers a wide range of classes and workshops to help people unleash the artist within. As I write this long-overdue review, I can admire a couple of pieces I made in a pottery class there a couple years ago. All my other attempts were disasters, but I learned a lot in my two six-week sessions and look forward to going back.
A nice place to see some of the current art in the area, prices are a bit high but art usually is. The put on a lot of shows especially for the schools art programs, cant thank them enough for that.
They really have some very nice art work from locals and from the local schools
This is the second class Ive taken and I really enjoyed it.
Fun class and helpful instructor!
