Very knowledgeable staff. Gave me a great starting point for learning more about fly fishing in the PNW. Great information about area regulations, species to target, and what equipment would be necessary to be successful. Will be looking to them for more knowledge and will definitely be patron of this shop in the future.
John and Mo met us in Maupin for a beginner fly fishing course. They were both very patient, highly knowledgeable and great teachers. My wife and I had great time and both have a ton more confidence to go out and fly fish on our own. We were lucky in that we were their only two clients for the day, which was lovely. These guys are great! We definitely recommend!
My good friend & I took an all women’s introduction to fly fishing class with Mo. Not only was she very knowledgeable about fly fishing, she took her time with each of us & was very hands on. I felt SO much more confident about my fishing skills after the class was over! I’ll definitely be returning for more! Highly recommended 👌
Super informative and helpful. Love supporting the local shops and this place makes it easy to do so. Well worth fighting through downtown traffic
First time shopper there, needed new fly lines, on multiple reels and more. Service was great, they helped me pick the right lines and loaded them while we waited. Loved the vibe, attitude and how we were treated. This is my new go to Fly Shop!
John and Mo took my Dad and I out of Maupin for a beginner fly lesson. They were patient, helpful, funny, and made the experience great. We went from never fishing with a fly rod to several strikes and even landed a wee rainbow! I feel confident in heading out on my own and honing this new craft.Highly recommend for those who want to try out this sport but dont quite know how to start.
I can now post about PFS with two different experiences. I Attended a private tour with Mo(nica) on the Mackenzie River. We have a WONDERFUL DAY. I felt so comfortable with what I had learned, we went in store to buy our first rod and gear. On both occasions, the employees went above and beyond. We felt totally comfortable asking all our questions, and struggling through all the acronyms. The passion they have for fly fishing is palpable.Thank you!!!
Jackson took me as a walk-in and spun up a new line/ backing on my Tilt reel and Im ready to go euro nymphing. Super knowledgeable, helped several guests with targeted tips on several area rivers, and gave great tying advice on a few jig patterns as well. Ill go back.
Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon to pick up some gear as Im getting back into the sport. Spent maybe $100, but really felt like nobody cared much that I was there and will spend a good deal more somewhere else. I like to buy local, but not if this what can be expected.
I was so excited to see they offered womens fly fishing lessons, our guide Mo was soo knowledgeable and personable. I have never fly fished in my life, and i caught fish during my 1st lesson! I had a GREAT time and thats and understatement. You need to take this class!
The intro to fly fishing class with John is a world-class, comfortable environment to learn. We learned two techniques and hooked up with some fish. After the class, I came to the shop and the folks there helped me replicate the nymph rig we used during the class. Took that rig back out to the Deschutes myself and caught a big whitefish!
Really great fly shop. The staff takes their time to answer all our questions, orders gear for us, gives us recs for where to fish and literally whatever else we need or ask. Its also super refreshing, as a woman, to go into the fly shop with my partner and to have them talk to both of us and not just him. Ive had prior experiences in other fly shops where they take one look at me and assume Im just tagging along and leave me out of conversations. Seriously, the whole staff is just awesome and so respectful, we feel so welcome every time we go in and I couldnt recommend this place more.
Amazing day learning the ins and outs of fly fishing with Mo and John. I highly recommend taking a class with both Mo and John if you are just getting started and new to the sport or looking to refine your skills. Both are extremely knowledgeable and very patient. I also recommend swinging by the shop to get everything you need in terms of gear. Great selection and everyone is very friendly
Great customer service and knowledgeable staff! They have an awesome selection of fly tying materials and other top of the line fly fishing gear. One of my go to locations in the Portland area.
Excellent customer service, great shop!
The nicest and most helpful folks. This will forever be my favorite fly shop. The dog is a plus.
Love this place, if you want to have a little fun with them ask lots of questions about euro nymphing lol. There all good people in there.
I highly recommend going to this shop. These are good guys that are super nice and helpful, and they have tons of knowledge to share!I always go here first for all my flyfishing needs, and only if they dont have something specific I will go to another shop.
Was looking to try out fly fishing and was happy to find a class available through The Portland Fly Shop. John and Mo were the instructors for a nice sized class of 3 students. I learned a lot and managed to get my cast pretty much on point (er, most of the time). Didnt manage to catch a fish but had a blast trying out at the river. Considering trying out another class soon.
Excellent, place for knowledgeable fly fishing flies, rod, and everything in between.
Always friendly. If they dont have what you need they will get it ordered for you. Full of info.
Convenient free parking just off the freeway. Impressive inventory, very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Wasn’t able to attend one of their classes for personal reasons and they issued me a full refund no questions asked.
Had a great time with my guide Jackson very informative and patient lol .. The target was big salmon and that is exactly what we found.. thanks again Portland fly shop
Solid fly shop always friendly & has great service/advice!
Jason and John were extremely helpful in getting me updated for a trip to central Oregon. In addition to equipment and flies they gave me some great tips. Great shop!
The Portland Fly Shop has been there since day 1 of my fly fishing life. They’ve all helped me become a better angler and have never been anything more then open and helpful with every single question over the last 2 years. An amazing place with an amazing staff.
Jason hooked me up with a perfect boat rod. Didn’t break the bank and does just what I need it to. They are good dudes at the shop and are happy to let me pick their brains when I stop through!
My fiancé is an avid fly fisherman and wanted to introduce me the right way. It couldnt have gone better - as a fishing guide, Monicas professional comportment, patience, and personality is extraordinary. I actually caught my first trout on a fly! Along with watching my fiancé catch and release stunning brown and rainbow trout, Im so thankful to Monica for sharing her passion and instinctive knowledge with us.
Really nice shop and I always leave feeling like the owner cares more about making sure my next day fishing is a good one than selling me stuff I dont need.
John and Mo are fantastic teachers. Took a beginners class with my son. We both enjoyed and learned a lot from the in store seminar and the on the lake and stream fly fishing day. They went over basic instruction such as how to put your rod together, (there is an incorrect way), to reading water, entomology, to tying three basic knots that get you fishing right away. Their willingness to work with everyone no matter their skill level is impressive. Do not shy away from the beauty of fly fishing. John and Mo take the anxiety away with their knowledge and patience. An extremely good value. They are a wealth of knowledge.
Staff and owner very helpful and friendly. Prices fair and happy to help you with warranty work on your gear.
I recently had a fly fishing lesson from Mo which was completely awesome. Fly fishing has always seemed really complicated and Mo was able to make it seem easy. She took care of everything and all we had to do was show up ready to fish. I can’t wait to hit the water with my new skill thanks to Mo and the Portland Fly Shop!
Mo is hands down an awesome teacher! Had her for a women’s class and she’s so enthusiastic, positive and so patient! She will help you whether you are a beginner or have been fly fishing for awhile. Definitely will be coming back for more classes.
I had a great day learning to fly fish with Mo on the Deschutes! Mo was really patient, very informative, & generous with her time, experience & supplies. It was my first time fly fishing, & I never felt embarrassed or nervous - Mo put me instantly at ease. I heartily recommend The Portland Fly Shop, & will definitely return for more opportunities to learn from Mo!
Took a beginners fly fishing lesson from Mo and it was the best! We spent a couple of hours in the shop learning the basics, then went out to a glacial lake near Mt. Hood the following Sunday and had a blast. Mo makes you feel very comfortable and gets you excited about fishing, even if youve had zero prior experience like I did.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff! They set me up with my new rod, a sage x. I rocked the salmon fly hatch on the deschutes this past weekend and looking forward to buying more gear from them.
Best selection of flies in town. The owner is really nice and helpful.
Pretentious Dbags who dont know anything. Most unhelpful and worthless shop I have seem over priced garbage. Honestly can do better anywhere else. Do these people even fish?
I enjoy fishing, but have never fly fished a day in my life. I knew next to nothing heading into the shop, which can be a bit intimidating.I walked in and the owner was inviting, friendly and knowledgable. Took the time to explain everything from rod/reel choice to how to set everything up. He even threw in some flies and gave tips on some of the best rivers/spots to learn on. Would 100% recommend the shop to any level angler.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience with Mo and John! They were exceptionally patient and kind with our group of 8 novice fly fishermen and women. They made our day so memorable! I would highly recommend!!!
I had such a great experience at The Portland Fly Shop that I have to share it. I give them 10⭐️s. From the moment I walked in, they provided me with exceptional customer service and my personal canine tour guide sweet Duchess.Perfect location too!: Next door to Pearl Hardware!Thank you for all of your help finding challenging alternative craftwork options and friendliness! Priceless experience🥳🥰🤩😇(Canine tour guide optional..haha)
My husband and I did a lesson with Mo and John on the Deschutes. We had a great time. They were patient and experienced. They answered all of our questions. We would highly recommend them for those new to fly fishing!
Hands down best fly shop in portland!
I recently went out on the water with Mo, from the Portland Fly Shop, and had an incredible time. Mo is the perfect guide! She is an expert fisherwoman, and easy going and mellow. She took care of all the details, and my friend and I had an amazing day. The Portland Fly Shop also has a cool selection of gear and classes for women (and men), and welcomes beginners! Ive already told several friends about the shop and Im looking forward to my next outing with Mo.
A very nice shop! The owner was super chill and is extremely helpful. Great selection of fly tying materials and tools on hand. They spend the time to dye materials, which I have never seen in another shop before. I buy all my tying supplies here.
Whether you are brand new to fly fishing and are curious about getting into the sport or a seasoned veteran looking to stock up before the next trip, the Portland Fly Shop is the place to go for friendly service and excellent gear.
Jason has put together a great shop in an awesome location. Easy to access with free parking. More importantly, it has everything and carries SA lines which are often hard to come by out here. The class schedule is also looking great. This will become my local go to shop.
Good selection and great information when you need it.....need a whisky bar, then Id visit weekly.....
Wow, this place is great. Jackson helped me with a new spey rod setup and was super helpful, knowledgeable and patient. He really went out of his way to make sure I got what I needed. Above and beyond service. Thanks!
Amazing selection, great location and most importantly...friendly. Thank you for not being condescending and rude like every other shop I’ve ever been to. Please take the time to support your local businesses like this one.
Duchess, the German Shepherd pup there is so cute... Dope playlist music while you shop. And the owner kindly took the time to handwrite a note for the next three fly fishing classes/trips on the back of the biz card!
Popped in for some fly tying supplies today, fantastic range of materials including some I’d never seen elsewhere. The staff are really friendly and gave me some tips for my first time swinging a fly for Chinook. This is my goto shop from now on
Very nice shop and Jason, the owner, is great. He was very knowledgeable and friendly, providing advice and technique for waters I plan to fish. Definitely will be back!
Ive been going here for years and have always felt more than taken care. Excellent shop.
Great shop. The owner is very knowledgeable and has a great attitude. He was eager to answer even beginner level questions and provide suggestions.
An awesome shop In the heart of downtown Portland (with free parking!). The selection is great and growing. And Jason is really helpful and knowledgeable about all things related to flyfishing.
John and Mo are awesome, I took the intro class and they were super patient explaining all the information. I would recommend the class to anyone looking for a good starting point to get into fly fishing.
Great new-ish local fly shop in NW Portland. Selection on gear isnt diverse but everything they do have are reputable brands and models. Selection of flies are more geared toward the deschutes, but thats also all I focused on.Friendly staff that is eager to help you out as well as let you peruse on your own. Plus every time Ive been there, there has been a friendly pup to greet you at the door.
The shop owners, staff, and dogs are all super helpful and willing to help newer casters find the right stuff and right places. They sell quality gear and have some intro level stuff as well.
Best selection of tying materials in the area. Quality gear at reasonable prices. Definitely check them out.
Fun shop....local funky and they have a cute dog too!
Excellent service and great time at the tying demonstration. Superb instructions for all intrested in the pursuit of cutthroat trout.
This place is great, and everyone on staff is super nice. The products are similar to what you will find in any other fly shop but I like the people here more than anywhere else in the area.
Excited to get back out on the river! Knowledgeable professional and friendly, what more could you need.
Great fly shop in the middle of Portland.Jason is very knowledgeable and happy to help answer questions about everything from where and when to catch a steelhead, to what fly to use and how to tie it.
Jason and the team are very knowledgeable and friendly. Best selection of tying materials in the pdx metro area:
I just took the beginner steelheading class with John and Mo, and I seriously can’t recommend it enough. It was my first day using a two handed rod, and with the tips shown to me by both Jon and Mo helped improve my casting immensely. By the end of the float I was feeling very confident with it.Not only did it help my casting, but I was also taught how to read steelhead water, and know which runs will likely hold fish. All the necessary tools to improve your odds at catching one. I will definitely be taking the winter steelheading class again, and if they do a summer steelheading class, I’ll be signing up for that too!
Awesome store! Great owner! Has my support 100%!
Glad to see a fly shop in Portland again. Good place to grab flies and most other needs.
Great shop. Love the on site parking
Great shop, fully and wisely stocked; shop owner Jason is very informative and friendly. This is just the fly shop downtown PDX needed.
Good selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Open Sunday is a plus!
Very friendly, nice place.
This place does sell fly fishing gear. They do not sell food for humans.
Professional and friendly. Shop The Portland Fly Shop for an excellent selection of Fly Fishing gear.
Finally, a shop in Portland. Jason and the crew at the Portland fly shop have been nothing short of phenomenal. They carry some of the products that are hardest to come by and also cater to all types of angling styles. Support your local fly shop. This is my new “go to” shop for all of my fly fishing needs.
Great brands help and the place!
Didnt know it was in downtown Portland. So glad it is
I guess I was a bit disappointed I couldn’t buy a fishing license because they don’t sell them. If you are going the be a fishing store, you should sell everything someone would need to go fishing.....
The best fly shop in Portland hands down
Pretentious and over priced. Not even an acknowledgement for the 15 minutes that I was there. Tourists and OHCU doctors go here.
Awesome
It’s about time!
I was visited by an acquaintance. Materials, gears, etc. are fulfilling and exciting. Real fly fishing pro shop
