If you are standing in line and looking at these reviews, or maybe you saw the line and want to see whats up ... it. is. worth. the. HYPE. I recommend getting there as soon as when they open as you can to ensure you get one of the breakfast biscuits because HOLY COW. Most delectable breakfast sandwich I have ever had. So simple, yet mind blowing. What do you guys put in those biscuits?? Shouldnt even be legal. Anyway, the molasses coffee was rich, earthy, perfectly balanced sweetness. Why not get a little iron and B6 with your caffeine? The pistachio cake was so dense and tasty, took me 2 days to finish it. This spot is a must stop.
Amazing biscuits, pastries, breakfast & drinks. Highly recommend stopping here. It’s housed in an old gas station and has a really cool, hip vibe. It seems to be a favorite of locals and tourists both so you get a great crowd. It was my first time in town so I told to the baristas about what to order and what to do with the rest of my day. They were so kind and helpful. If you’re in the area, you should add this to you list of places to eat while in town!
This is a unique spot and welcoming vibe. Coffee and egg and cheese biscuits are the best breakfast we have had during our stay in Portland. If you add this to your stops you will not be disappointed!
Anyone who reads my reviews knows I do not review in superlatives. However, my breakfast sandwich here was one of the best I have had. Semi sweet bread with some salt and very flavorful bacon was an explosion of flavor. To top it off the coffee I had was the best I have had yet in Portland. This sandwich is unique and worth trying for anyone. I strongly suggest a pre-order because this venue also has lines, but worth the wait.
This place gets busy so get here early! Delicious coffee and chai tea latte and their savory biscuit with goat cheese and honey was absolutely delicious. We got a piece of the coconut almond pie to go which was the part I was most looking forward to and while it was good, it wasnt anything to knock your socks off. Service was friendly and theres covered areas to sit which was great on a drizzly morning.
Okay. This place was crazy busy over the holiday weekend (Labor Day). Because everything was outside and everyone was masked, it still felt safe despite the crowds. The coffee was pretty okay, but not life changing. The pastries were good. Major points for aesthetic and super friendly and kind employees. Pretty decent turnaround time despite the huuuuge lines.
We loved it so much we came back a second time. They have the best biscuit sandwiches ever. We were worried about the line and potential wait, but it went faster than expected. The second time we put in an online order and that was even faster. Truly unique in the quality of breakfast items/pastries!!
AMAZING COFFEE! I’m quite picky when it comes to coffee, and this exceeded all expectations. Ordered the cortado with almond milk (I typically get oat) and it was out of this world. Would recommend ordering pick-up because there is a long line and they often run out of things (such as the cheese jalapeño biscuit). Also got the biscuit mentioned above and chocolate chip cookies. Would highly recommend! I preferred the cookie, but scone was also great (and rich)!
Phenomenal baked goods and delicious coffee, full of flavor. We were so happy to finally be able to stop into Tandem on our way through Portland. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the location is unique.
I’ll be real: Best biscuit I’ve hadDue to COVID, pick up line only. Moved quickly. Need to get the Sweet Savory Biscuit, hello heaven. Also, coffee was hella good! Creamy and sweetened nicely with honey. Wish there were chairs outside..kinda had a after school gas station vibe..that I actually enjoyed?+Quick and kind customer service+Amazing (and SHAREABLE) biscuit+Quality latte
Amazing baked goods. The breakfast sandwiches and scones are particularly good, although I have a feeling everything would be equally as amazing. Coffee was good too but if you order online, they dont start making them until you arrive which kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion
Great spot for breakfast. The savory scone is delicious.
Coffee was not worth $3.25… basically a small cup of hot coffee flavored water. But the egg and cheese biscuit taste like home… in a good way.
Tandem is one of my favorite coffee shops ever! The espresso is bold and delicious & the bakery items are creative and decedent. We have literally driven over an hour just for the egg & cheese biscuit w/ garlicky greens, I’ve been known to get two, one to eat there and one to eat later for lunch. The atmosphere has a hip-modern sophisticated feel. Seriously love this place!!
This place is worth the wait! I got there 5 minutes before it opened and there was already a line. The line moved quickly. The man who took my order at the counter was so personable. He knew the regular customers by name. I highly recommend the savory loaded biscuit!
Some of the best coffee in Portland, and their biscuits are amazing. Be quick, biscuits run out fast. Lines start early, so certainly order ahead online if you dont want to wait.
Loved our Cinnamon Rolls - wow! Ordered ahead of time, walked up to the window and was out of there in less than 2 minutes. Wonderful experience!
I have been ordering their beans by mail for a long time and love it. But this review is about a different product.I recently visited the store in person and got a sticky bun. I sat down a couple of blocks away on Congress street on a park bench to eat. Shortly after someone pulled over their car to ask where I got that sticky bun. And two bites later a group of guys walked by, one of them turned around to inspect that sticky bun as I was eating it. TL;DR: the coffee is great, but don’t forget about the sticky buns.
Long as fudge wait. I waited so long to get 2 drinks. This is not the common cafe stop. This is a lets spend 10 minutes waiting in line for online pickup and then getting your coffee and food even though the pickup time was 30 minutes ago. The service is nice but I regretted ordering online because it honestly does not save you time. Go somewhere else if you just want good coffee with half the wait. I can only imagine ordering in the main line that is already an hour wait and waiting another hour for your food. The hot chocolate and tea tasted fresh and hot. But not enough to wait so long. Even Holy Donut isnt this long of a wait.
Aromatic coffee, cute setting and the best breakfast sandwiches!
This is a very memorable bakery and coffee shop. Located in an old gas station that dates back to the 1960s, the gas station has been completely renovated into a space to enjoy coffee and homemade pastries inside or at the long wooden tables underneath the old gas station canopy. What to order: Tandems flaky yummy biscuits, slathered with butter and jam. Not only are they amazing, but they are also quite photogenic. For a repeat visit, try their egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches with bacon and grilled onions. You will love them!Honestly, you can pretty much get anything here and itll all taste great!!!
Beware this place is super busy and there are 20+ person lines. We ordered online for just drinks and was quoted 10 min, got there 15 min later, and still waited 30 more minutes. Also only one size for certain drinks like hot tea and it was super small, maybe the smallest size Ive ever seen for a cafe.
Best food place in Portland! We had both the sweet and savory biscuits - the sweet blueberry butter fillings was amazing, the butter was creamy and fluffy! And the chocolate sesame horchata cake was so creative and delicious - these are flavors that I rarely see paired together, but they work so well! And the banana bread with cream cheese and olive oil is a revelation - who knew banana bread can be not boring? Highly recommended!
Love the coffee, but the real star is the food menu! I’m not typically a big fan of breakfast sandwiches, but Tandem’s breakfast biscuit is life changing. If you can get there early enough to enjoy one with local ham/sausage, it is such a treat.Jalapeño cheddar & everything bagel scones are worth a detour for as well.Amazing place and the kindest people.
Amazing. Point blank period. best bfast sandwich ever. I appreciate the effort making these delicious menu items for us to enjoy.
Tandem has some amazing pastries and coffee. Evidence of how good they are is in the long lines to place an order. Well worth the wait!
The egg and cheese biscuit sandwich was hands down the best breakfast sandwich I’ve had in my entire life. 12/10 highly recommend. to top it off, the gentleman who took our order was incredibly kind and personable!
While visiting the area we are so happy we stopped by this cafe; it had great reviews and it did not disappoint!! The area where the cafe is located is also a beautiful neighborhood that I am glad we walked through because of this cafe. The food was delicious and they obviously know what they are doing flavor-wise; it is a higher end quality for breakfast and pastries. The coffee was good, and I loved that they made their own almond milk in house. The prices were a little high though, and we had to wait a bit in line to order so expect there to be a wait. After eating there though it makes sense why there was a long wait; delicious food and quality ingredients!!
I am so glad I don’t live near this place. I would be there every day. First time we drove by, the line was 50 people long. We just had to try it after we saw the line. We went after lunch on Wednesday and there was no line. Everything we tried was awesome. My favorite was blueberry scone and loaded biscuit. I tried their latte. It was beautifully presented but I wouldn’t go there for latte.
Loaded biscuits! All day, everyday! Perfect savory and fluffy biscuit, delicate sweet cream and yummy jam. That’s it!
Wonderful stop at Tandem on our way into Portland. We had a slice of potato & leek quiche and a carrot & zaatar scone. The scone was wild in the best possible way, I wasnt sure the flavors would work, but they pulled it off perfectly. Our coffee order was slightly off, but they fixed it right away and told us to keep the extra latte; and the drinks were great. Go early because they were out of a few things by the time we arrived near noon on a Sunday and there was a line. But definitely go!
We wne there twice and their food was immaculate. Their biscuits were both moist and fluffy and they had a crunch on the outside. Their Herby limeade was also a hit in my family. Would definitely go back
Best Latte with art, aromatics and ambience! The coffee has a unique toasted flavor. It brings back old memories. They don’t ask if I want skim milk because you don’t. Good location and nice open area to hangout and decompress. The Banana cake looks very interesting. The music is not too loud. I kind of like this place!
The breakfast sandwich is in my Top 3 in the city. I think it’s largely due to the quality of the biscuit, but everything about it is amazing. Always grab a sticky bun if you can get one, too! Plus, everyone here is incredibly nice and welcoming.
The Granola is excellent! Really really fantastic cookies too 😉 also my fave is the breakfast sandwiches that are brought home... not often enough unfortunately. But Im still happy with once a week... i bet their fam meals are amazing also!
I’ve been a barista in specialty coffee for the last 5 years and this is by far the best cafe experience I’ve had at any other establishment besides my own.The service was exceptional—friendly and knowledgeable staff. The espresso was dialed in perfectly and was very bright, clean, and well balanced.Unique feature drinks and the baked goods were out of this world. Easily the best biscuits I’ve ever had. We will be trying to get there early enough in the morning on our way home from Maine to try their infamous breakfast sandwich.Other things to note that set them apart:•they make their own alt milk in house•every single item was compostable (cups, straws, carry trays, etc)There is parking as well.I never leave reviews but you must go here if you’re in Portland.
Top of the heap for coffee shops in Portland, and that’s saying a lot since the competition is fierce. Tandem’s coffee is second to none, the baked goods are uniquely incredible and the atmosphere is cool and chic. Their awesomeness causes Tandem to be crowded during peak hours (especially weekend mornings) so plan your visit accordingly. But even if you find yourself standing in line, know that it’ll be worth the wait.
DELICIOUS bakery items. We tried and quiche and sticky bun and both were out of this world. Ample outdoor seating and really friendly employees as well.
We were in town for 4 days and visited this place 4 times. What. A. Gem. We tried every biscuit offering available, some sesame banana cake, and lots of espresso. Everything was incredible. We waited in line on the weekend mornings, but were always able to grab a seat at the bar or little corner nook. If you are getting a biscuit sandwich - PLEASE add the garlicky greens and chorizo. So good.
What an experience! Most amazing biscuits, but the staff make it special and went the extra mile for my sausage biscuit. Thanks so much.
We love this place. Everytime we visit Portland we have to make a trip to Tandem and get a sticky bun. The picture is the best I could take before everyone devoured their bun. They dont last long. They are so good! My kids always ask to us to make another trip back to tandem before we leave for home. They make great breakfast sandwiches and fruit pies as well. They have outdoor seating to eat your treats too.
Great service and unique pastries (tried the grapefruit ginger scone but they also had a savory kimchi one). Only complaint is the drink sizes - feels overpriced for the tiny cup you’re getting. However tea was properly brewed and had to wait a few minutes, appreciate them for this instead of using tea bags! Maybe offering larger cup sizes could make the prices more appealing.
Line was long but it was worth it. This some of the best coffee Ive ever had. The food was also amazing. Clearly perfectly extracted fresh espresso good in both milk drinks or regular double espresso.
One of the best coffee joints in Portland. The staff clearly know their coffee and care about making a decent cup. Even a basic Americano was expertly pulled and carefully poured over. The building looks like an old gas station, but its been converted really well to allow outdoor seating and plenty of parking.Stylish interior and fair pricing make this a must visit for coffee lovers in this part of Maine.
You need to order right at 8am or the stuff will sell out - with good reason! The egg and cheese breakfast sandwich is deliciously mouth watering and the cinnamon rolls are huge!
The coffee was good but the baked goods were even better. My iced coffee was probably one of my favorites Ive had. I also had a biscuit with jam and butter. In my opinion it was a little heavy on the butter but I think thats just my preference. My husband had a jalapeno cheddar biscuit which was great and just the right amount of spicy. The atmosphere is fun and there was a line out the door when we got there so we knew we were in store for some good stuff!
We enjoyed a mocha, an iced coffee, a blueberry scone, and a savory biscuit. YOU MUST TRY THE BISCUIT.
Great baked goods. Coffee stellar. Helpful staff. Order online to beat the line!
Just do it. Go.Order a breakfast sandwich. Buy more pastries than you think you’ll eat, because they’re all super yummy & chances are even still you’ll want more.Oh my goodness, The staff! The wonderful and beautiful people of Tandem coffee make the experience! Even during covid and window service only - they treat everyone like their next door neighbor. As an out of towner - They even remembered me and my dog from a few days previous the second time I visited on my trip.Good coffee. Good pastries. Good people.Thank you Tandem Coffee & Thank you Tandem Coffee Team!
Yay! What a lovely visit to this very intentional and friendly coffee shop. The local vibe is strong and the service was great! Can’t wait to visit again :)
Breakfast biscuit sandwiches are outstanding. Definitely add sausage! Definitely has a line on nice days so prepare to wait or order online.
One of the largest ordeals to get coffee I ever did have. Tried showing up Friday morning before mem day weekend and by 10:30 they were out of sandwiches and most of their menu. Got up early on Sunday and ordered over an hour ahead of time to get my sandwich at 9:40. They brand as sustainable but only offer almond milk for an alt, which uses way to much water in the process to make, please get oat milk. When I arrived to pick up at my assigned time, 9:25, I had to further wait more in a line wrapping around the building.I would not recommend coming here if you’re on vacation and don’t deeply appreciate coffee. There is simply way to much negotiation around logistics of even getting a product from this establishment, it is NOT a quick ordeal by any means, this is an hour or more affair. Especially on a holiday weekend.I do deeply appreciate coffee and was delighted by their mocha, although the almond milk was quite sweet, I wish I could have ordered oat milk, which I find more neutral in flavor. The sandwich was INCREDIBLE! The biscuit it was on was a buttery delight, and I don’t normally like a fluffy egg, but it had a nice crisp edge to it.Ordering online and picking up offered no way to give a tip to the employees. I can NOT imagine they get paid enough to deal with the clear nonsense the owners have decided to bring to the order and pick up line. I only recommend going if there is no line and bring a cash tip. Employees were as gracious as possible in this situation, which was crafted to offer no small talk time and keep them clearly over taxed. Really appreciated all the masks and covid precautions. Not worth the hype or these employees sanity, you can find a better run coffee shop in this city.
Love this place! Love everything about it — from their absolutely scrumptious baked goods and perfect coffee to their wonderful, kind staff. Wish I could come by more often, but am always so glad to get a treat whenever I am in the area.
Great locally owned coffee. Delicious
The cutest cafe with homemade biscuits, breads, and breakfast sandwiches. This is just one of those places you want to instagram because its so cute and authentic (the staff goes on a retreat, you dont hear of many cafes doing that). Everything is clearly scratch made. I am currently dreaming of those biscuits. I dont even drink coffee but it made me want to.
Website was a little difficult to navigate, but the coffee and food was worth the effort. I absolutely loved the banana bread and savory oatmeal. I wish this place was in my hometown, so I could go every week!
Meh. Good coffee, blueberry spread was great. Staff taking orders were pretty rude and the egg sandwich was clearly made hours before I ordered. Could have gotten similar food at McDonald’s.
Excellent coffee and incredible savory biscuit. Had to wait in a short line (arrived about 5 min before opening) but it moved fast and the staff couldn’t have been nicer.
It’s just amazing place to get tasty eats!!!What can I tell about Tandem, as a newbie to the city 2 years back was looking to get some good and strong coffee in the morning as I live on caffeine rush..;)One fine morning after my regular morning Crossfit class visited Tandem and had their famous egg & cheese biscuit and a 3 shots latte, simply hooked on it to it!!Pistachio cake, jalapeño cheddar biscuit egg & cheese biscuit and special baked cakes are always a treat to the hungry stomach..:)Try anything over there and you will not be disappointed at all, great delicious food and beverages.Staff is super friendly and this place has got some amazing seating, you will love the atmosphere. Thank you Tandem for everything you do!!!
Best breakfast sandwich Ive ever had. Their biscuits are incredible, almost croissant like. Not crumbly like southern style biscuits. Get the chorizo if they have it but the ham is a close 2nd!!
Good coffee and food. Trendy AF. Long waits, but worth it!
Take out coffee and breakfast. Premade breakfast sandwiches and biscuits with butter and jelly. No way to customize anything, so if you have any allergies or sensitivities you are SOL. Biscuit with butter and strawberry jelly (again, no choice) was ok. There was WAY too much butter (like over half a stick) and barely any jelly on the biscuit (mostly spilling out one side) and I ended up throwing most of the filling away.Biting into a biscuit that was mostly cold butter is kind of gross. That said, the biscuit, once I got rid of the glob of cold butter, was decent. Obviously made recently, and well made. Not the best Ive ever had, but not the worst. I just wish it had had less butter and more jelly. It was super pretty and photographed well though. My partner got the breakfast sandwich with cheese, chorizo, and egg (no choice again). She said it was good for a premade sandwich, but greasy. For the hype I was kind of disappointed. My guess is theyve had trouble adapting to the pandemic situations, so I will definitely try again in the future.
Malt coffee and blueberry pie were good.
Coffee is nothing special but the sweet and savory biscuits were probably the best weve had. Would definitely come back.
This place should be called Tan-DAAAAMMMN bakery because it’s that good.
Super nice service, great treats, and awesome coffee!
The best for unique flavorful ingredients.Scones and buns are a wow.
So glad Tandem’s re-opened! Figured it’s about time I left a review. I’m not a coffee drinker but I take my coffee-drinkers here and they’re always thrilled.I go for the egg and cheese biscuits, and you should too! You’ll have to wait in a line, but it’s worth the wait. Go early while they’re still warm - also because they usually sell out. They’re huge and flaky and buttery and melt-in-your-mouth and just incredible. There’s this unique lemony sauce and they’re topped with a flaky sea salt. This shop has super friendly staff, is doing a great job in terms of Covid safety, and is very environmentally conscientious. My advice to management: please consider keeping the kim chi scones forever! Also, it would be wonderful if there was a higher quality jam on the butter and jam biscuit to complement the delicious biscuit.
I live in Boston, but I am obsessed with Tandem! I get a biweekly shipment of coffee and every time I am in Portland I stop in at least once! Most recently I tried their breakfast sandwich and savory scone and, wow, everything was amazing (as expected).
This is the best coffee in Portland don’t @ me. I do their coffee subscription and it’s the only thing that has brightened up this year is that I have the best coffee every day at home. my spouse and I frequently get their baked goods which are always phenomenal, especially their biscuits. there’s always a line even in a pandemic (everyone still social distancing) and they have done a great job filtering people in to pick up orders safely.
Worth the line to indulge in one of the unique baked goods or egg sandwiches. Coffee is also wonderful. Love love this place - give them your money.
Breakfast Biscuit sandwich was awesome! This time around they had brisket instead of the chorizo
Super well organized. Thought it was going to be a long wait with all the people standing around but it was super efficient! Only waited about 2 min for the cappuccino and everything else was handed to us as we ordered! The quiche was great. And the sour cherry dark chocolate scone was super tasty. Would definitely go back!
