What a difference a year and a half makes! After being stuck in a guitar playing rut for a while, I started taking weekly 1h lessons with Phil. His thoughtful and intelligent teaching style helped me take my playing to the next level, keeping me accountable in the process. After 10 years of playing, Phil taught me a whole new approach and showed me that learning never stops on the guitar. I cant recommend him enough!

I have had such an incredible two years taking guitar lessons with Phil. Beyond being extremely knowledgeable and an overall lovely person, he is the kind of instructor who will teach you what you want to learn. Our lessons ranged from jazz theory to basics to composition. Each week I would leave our lessons feeling more excited about music. Strongly recommend!

As a 30 year old, learning guitar from step one is not easy, but Phil is a phenomenal teacher. He is super patient, extremely knowledgeable on different genres of music relating to guitar and not related to guitar. He finds ways to make you want to play and get better in areas you are interested in. Hes a great guy and great teacher, so I highly recommend him!

Ive been taking guitar lessons from Phil at the Providence Guitar Academy for over a year. I used to take guitar lessons as a kid and hadnt really been close to the guitar in the last 20 years. Starting lessons with Phil was like picking up from where you left. Hes very knowledgeable about various styles - from rock to classical to everything in between. Hes a fantastic and very personable teacher and will help you with all aspects of music -- technique to theory. Phil is also very adaptable in that hell teach you things you want to know/play. My playing, knowledge of guitars / equipment and interest in exploring new music has increased manifold since I started with Phil and I cant recommend him enough.

Ive only attended a few classes here so far, but in that short time Phil has been able to show me things that have escaped other instructors. He is enthusiastic, patient and extremely adept at explaining what he is teaching. After many attempts to learn guitar I am feeling engaged and hopeful that I will stick with it this time. I have Phil to thank for that.

Ive gotten a lot out of my lessons at the Providence Guitar Academy. Phil tailors lessons to students musical interests, while providing a really solid grounding in technique. He also available to answer questions over e-mail between lessons if something comes up in your practice that you need guidance on. Also, hes a really nice guy!

I highly recommend lessons with Providence Guitar Academy. Phil is a rare teacher. Not only is he an exceptional musician, he is also an exceptional teacher. He is calm, compassionate, and skilled at his craft. It is clear that he enjoys teaching and the guitar, and this enjoyment is infectious. I have been in lessons with a variety of instruments and teachers for close to three decades. I can honestly say that Phil is one of the best teachers I have ever had. If you have ever wanted to try guitar, do yourself a favor and call up Phil!

I began studying with Phil at the Providence Guitar Academy the first week of October. I’ve been playing nylon string guitar most of my adult life with a background in some classical studies. I wanted to move towards jazz theory and jazz repertoire, sight-reading and other more advanced aspects of guitar playing. Phil is a pro and I’m excited that as a teacher he has elevated my musical consciousness, knowledge and professionalism — an outstanding teacher in my opinion.

Phil’s classes have helped to increase my guitar skills tenfold. He adapts to your knowledge and understanding of guitar, provides a customized curriculum, and is never short on answers when asked about music theory or its application to the guitar.I came to the Providence Guitar Academy after mostly self-teaching myself for six years. Phil helped to correct many of my bad habits while helping me to better understand my instrument. If you’re reading this and on the fence about signing up – don’t hesitate; call set up your first lesson now. He is a professional in every sense of the word.

It has been such a pleasure taking lessons with Phil!! I have been taking weekly 30 minute private lessons with Phil for almost a year now, and I have progressed so much! When I first started taking lessons with Phil, I had absolutely no prior experience with guitar. During my first lesson, he asked me to write out my goals and expectations and then based on what I had written, Phil made an individualized plan for me that would help me reach my goals. For example, I had written down that I wanted to eventually learn jazz guitar, and so Phil had an individualized plan in mind that would help me reach my goal.Even though I only take 30 minute lessons weekly, the lessons feel like hour-long lessons because we always get so much done. During the thirty minute lessons, Phil makes learning guitar a lot of fun and teaches me about riffs, chord progressions, classical solo pieces, sight reading, music theory, and so much more. Phil is clearly passionate about music and is energetic, patient, and professional! He easily simplifies my questions about harder music theory concepts and motivates me to practice guitar even when I’m feeling frustrated. For example, for a few months I was struggling with Barr chords, but Phil recommended that I try some finger strengthening exercises to help remedy this problem! Phil ultimately helped me to enjoy the process of learning guitar! His fun lessons and teaching style also have motivated me to take more music courses outside of these lessons and to just learn more about music in general!!Phil is also very easy to reach via email and is very responsive to emails. Sometimes after lessons, Phil also sends over a long, detailed email that basically recaps what had been covered during that lesson since sometimes we just cover so much ground!!I’m currently a college student, and I think Phil’s 30 minute lessons has been been perfect for me, especially since I also have to juggle homework, extra-curriculars, exams, clubs, and so on. I learn a lot every week, but I don’t get too overwhelmed with things to practice. Phil is also very accommodating during my very busy weeks (ie. study-week before finals) and is understanding when I sometimes do not get to practice as much as I would have liked due to other commitments.I unfortunately only take lessons with Phil during the school year because I am home in Boston during the summer. But for this summer, Phil took time the time to create a summer plan for me so that I can continue to improve my skills this summer! In fact, Phil even encouraged me to email him throughout the summer to keep him updated on my progress! I’m actually learning my first jazz piece this summer, and I am really excited! I know that I would not have been able to progress so much without Phil’s help!!! All in all, Phil really cares about his students, and I give my highest recommendation to anybody interested in taking lessons with Phil!!! Thanks so much Phil!!!
