EDIT: Outdoors Unlimited must be looking up a different William Taylor as I have rented in the last year. Also, I have sent them tens of thousands of dollars worth of business over the years due to my large club following and renting a lot of stuff from them for the club and sending people to them. AND IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO WORK FOR YOU, PAY THEM MORE!Sadly they know they have a monopoly on the outdoor rental market, and they act like it. The customer service and staff knowledge has really plummeted the past 2 years. Been going here for 20 years now, and I am going to avoid using them in the future because it has gotten so bad. They wont answer their phone, ever. They wont acknowledge your existence until it is your turn, and they wont help you carry large things anymore. They just say, if you need a hand with that 200lb item, let me know, not professional at all.

Waited for hours to get gear and their rental policy isn’t clear. Are not flexible on rental periods.Hire more workers, make a more reasonable rental schedule and you’re golden my friends!Update after response from manager:For context, we were trying to rent equipment for night skiing. Last week we came to get equipment and all the bindings for snowboards were taken. We were told by employees to come earlier next time which we felt was reasonable. Rather than allowing us to rent our gear for the duration of the day (allowing us to night ski) and return it right when they open the next day we were told it was in no way possible. As a note...most other shops don’t care if you return rentals this way.If you’re looking for a great place to rent from with easily competitive prices and much better costumer service, try-Level nine Sports in Orem-UVU outdoor adventure center.Business is earned not inherited.Disappointed BYU.

Waited in line outside in the freezing rain for close to 30 minutes (because of Covid capacity limits) while I watched employees allow 15+ returns customers inside but only 1 individual make it inside for rentals before getting told it was time to close and getting turned away. Employee would not budge nor listen to my pleas. Sure looked like the whole shop was more worried about snatching up all their return gear and closing their doors than they were about serving people who were waiting in line to give them business. I will take my business to Nymans ski shop from now on.

I had a bike Ive owned for 3 years which I finally brought in for some maintenance. They had the pro tune up done in 3 days (cheaper than other surrounding locations). Just like brand new. Two weeks later, I hit a curb and a metal brace guiding the chain got thrown off, grinding against every chain section as I pedaled. I brought it in, and they immediately fixed it - free of charge.

Very hit or miss. The good: great selection of everything you could want to have a good time outdoors and very good prices. The bad: if you decide to come here, dont do it when youre on a tight schedule. The employees have no sense of urgency and their processes arent very efficient. Ive rented from them multiple times and I dont think Ive ever been in and out in less than 30 minutes, even just to drop off a rental. The employees work incredibly slow, rentals are usually not ready to go (referring mainly to bikes) and youll have to rent, pick up, and pay with different employees at different registers for each step. Ive also had to walk out with something other than what you rented twice since they double booked something or are too lax with their return time policy and people dont return gear on time (I realize thats out of their control).

I was in a bind and my normal rental place was booked. The equipment was clean and ready to go, but it required an online reservation and then three phone calls to confirm the reservation- just seemed like a complex system. Not super great customer service, I had to deflate the rafts before I took them out, on my own and when I asked about payment one worker said oh, sorry, I forgot you were here. Pretty understaffed for a busy Saturday but the two workers in the shop were doing the best they could, which was just okay. We had requested a rental the day before and when we arrived everything was fine and good. When it came to the bike trailer for our son, they brought it out disgusting and dirty with bits of food all in it and a strong odor. I asked for something to clean it with and began wiping it down as best I could. Then we come to find out they didn’t have the piece to have it actually connect to the bike. So after I cleaned it for them we didn’t even leave with anything because we couldn’t go anymore without our son. Very bad customer service. How could you not check everything properly to know in fact you could say to your customer yes, we can rent this to you. Now it is too late to even go out and find a replacement very upset.

The worst customer service. I asked for an inflatable paddle board (to fit in my car) and they brought out an already inflated one. Which is no big deal, but they just stood around and watched me deflate it and roll it up even though I was in a short white dress. And I was in a rush. And then no one helped me carry the board, pump, fins, life jackets, or paddle to my car. Also kind of expensive. Other renters charge $20-25 and they charged me $30 and then $7 for an extra life jacket.

Employees were not really friendly, but still got your needs taken care of. I would highly encourage their policies to be put up on visible places. Unfortunately, I had a terrible near-death experience with this place’s lifesavers. I rented a lifesaver from them before going tubing at the Provo Canyon. I had an accident in the river that threw me off my floating tube. As I entered the river I thought the life saver would pull me up in the water (since the current made it hard to stand on the rocks after falling off). The life saver did not even slightly pull me up from underwater and was drowning in the river. Because my life saver was big it limited my ability to swim. In the desperate moment of being dragged by the currents, I took the life saver off and was better off swimming by myself, although I did get very injured because of the lack of a FUNCTIONAL life saver. This place’s rentals are really old and I will never trust this place again. My life was put on jeopardy by trusting the BYU Outdoors Unlimited rentals. Management will be contacted.

I noticed in some other reviews people were dissatisfied with the service that Outdoors Unlimited provides. Unlike them, I love this store. The rental and shop labor prices are VERY low. I wouldnt be surprised if they actually dont make money on their repairs. This place is definitely not out to make a profit. They are owned by BYU, after all.The employees are very fun-loving and helpful. Theyll let you use their tools, and maybe even help you do small repairs for free, depending on what it is or if you are nice to them.Yes, the bicycle maintenance can seem bad, but what do you expect when you bring in a Low-quality bike and expect it to run like a high-quality racing machine?Yes, the shop may not seem that professional. But honestly, the employees are young college students. Give them a break. For what it is (a bike/ski/sports rental, repair, and retail shop) and for the great prices (200 dollars for a used fiberglass canoe? Heck yeah!) I give this establishment 5/5 stars.

Dont go there for quality bike work. They messed up on all three different things I asked for (brake bleed, new derailleur cable, and hub rebuild).1. On the brake bleed, after they did it, the brakes were filled with bubbles and were completely gone with any uphill riding on the bike. The worst part about that was that when I went back in to ask them to re-bleed them, they argued with me and tried to tell me that that was normal. They finally did it correctly (they had to do it THREE TIMES!) and now my brakes are working 100%. But to convince me that its okay not to have brakes after I go up any hill was extremely dangerous. Had I crashed, they could have been liable.2. They also redid the shifter cable on my XX1 derailleur and didnt even thread the cable through correctly, I left the shop without checking their work and when I got to the trailhead, realized that it didnt work and I had to buy another cable.3. The rear hub - they said they cleaned it and fixed it, but it rode exactly the same or a bit worse as before. I just had a friend look at it and he said it has a bent axle. He was shocked that bike mechanics werent able to catch that.Ill never go there again, unless its to rent a tent or something else like that. Definitely wont go there for bike stuff.

On a vacation, visiting Utah, I needed to rent three Mountain bikes. This was the only store nearby that was able to get me three on short notice. But, I shouldve read the reviews first. When reserving, the guy seemed nervous that he would be able to get one of the possible rentals fixed in time. The next morning when I picked them up, I waited for one of them to be returned by another customer. They did no mechanical inspection of the recently returned bike. Five hours into my mountain biking day with my sons, the rear axle of one of the bikes had come unscrewed, locking up the rear tire as my son descended the trail. This shop does not use a quick release axle, so even if I found the missing nut, it would have required allen-head tools (which of course I have a full set of on the mountain with me for my rental bikes). So, five hours into our Saturday/Sunday rental, we were walking down the mountain with a useless bike. They had informed me that normal wear and tear was covered, but any unusual damage to components would have to pay for the cost of repair. Monday morning, some young mechanic trying to be front-line warrior for the corporation paying him an hourly wage made me argue with him about whether getting my rental fee refunded as a result of their faulty rear hub was justified, saying to me, Well, you used the bike. Are you serious right now, lad? After much back and forth, he left me waiting forever and eventually and apparently talked to a decision-maker and reluctantly helped me with my refund. But, after a frustrating and wasted weekend walking down the mountain because of your quality control and equipment failure, making me argue with you about the axle and a small plastic handlebar bracket that definitely is not going to cost you $30 to replace, on a Monday morning, was very very very poor service.

After a poor experience at another local bike store (exceptionally poor customer service, and $75 bill for a bike that was still un-ride-able), Outdoors Unlimited was a breath of fresh air. Unlike the previous shop where I was ignored by all employees on the floor, I had prompt service (and an employee who had been on the phone with another customer even apologized for not getting to me quickly), a 20 min discussion with a tech about my bikes problem and what had already been done to fix the problem, 3 follow up phone conversations with techs and--as the coup de gras--at least 2 techs and THE BOSS rode my bike to diagnose the issue. The previous bike shop techs didnt even bother to ride my bike to see if it was fixed. I rode my bike for the first time today, and it felt like flying! The customer service at BYU Outdoors Unlimited left much to be desired. I had to approach the employees many times and ask for their help as I had never visited the store before and they acted as if I should have known what I was doing and were not friendly. When the time came to check out, the two employees at the computer continued socializing for about one minute until they decided to help us. We had planned to use our starving student card to get a discount and when I tried to use it I was told that it was not valid and the deal with the starving student card hadnt been valid for about two years (even though my card is from 2017). If there is a discrepancy between the Starving Student card company and BYU outdoors unlimited, it should be handled between these two entities and not with the customer. I also have a friend who got a starving student card just to use it a BYU outdoors unlimited and subsequently was told on the same day that I went that she could not use it either. In my opinion, this card should be honored as long as it is printed on the starving student card as it is not the fault of the customer. I hope that these issues can be resolved soon, as the equipment worked great and the price is reasonable. I will give this store another chance only because it fills my needs, not because of the customer service I received.
