This place is AAAmazzzzing!!!! I love a coffee-shop with delicious pastries, lunch, lattes, and all sorts of goodies!! We need places like this in Virginia Beach!! I indulged in the seasonal vegan pumpkin muffin (no pics because I ate it so quick!) & the crumble bar was to die for! &&& I loved the matcha latte with oat milk for my second buzz of caffeine as a smooth compliment to the pastries!!
Considering a move to Richmond just to be closer to this place...Dirty Chai is divine - best Ive ever had by a long shot. Goat Cheese & Thyme Quiche had the best crust on a quiche that Ive ever experienced (filling was perfect too!). Hazelnut Puff was the perfect balance of buttery pastry, chocolate, and hazelnut - most of it was eaten the next day and it was still incredible.Highly recommend.
Really nice treat-for-breakfast palace. A bit tonigh to judge fully as they are only doing window service right now, but the baked items were excellent. Serve breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches as well and people were ordering those frequently while waited in line. Yes a small line on a Sunday morning, so people obviously like the place!Wide coffee selections and a rishi loose leaf tea for us non coffee drinkers. Local Beer also available in afternoon with lunch bottles and cans)! The cheddar biscuit was great and the brown butter blackberry muffin was de-lish!! Well worth a trip!
Went here for the first time. Ordered a vanilla dirty chai & a turkey BLT on gluten free bread. The sandwich was amazing the bread tasted home-baked and fresh. After I ordered I noticed (and pointed out to my friend) that they had gluten free almond croissants! I wished I had ordered one but the barista must have seen that because when I opened my sandwich box they had included one for free. 10/10 recommend and the croissant was delicious 🤤
LOVE Sugar & Twine. For myself, a chai and euphoreo is the perfect start to a weekend morning. At Gather, we supply members with Sugar & Twine cookies every Wednesday for our weekly cookie hour. They disappear fast! Ive never been disappointed by a single pastry. Highly recommend.
Coffee is superb. If you dont drink coffee, you really should make an exception when you come to Sugar and Twine, itd be so worth it.Pastries here are capable of knocking peoples socks off, be warned. There are some gluten free things that are exquisite by any measure. As far as the gluten-rich things are concerned, even their humble buttermilk biscuit is freaking marvelous.
My favorite coffee shop in Richmond! I work at one of the local hospitals and make it a point to grab some coffee and a muffin on the way in to work when I can! Their thai coffee and lattes are to die for. I’m gluten intolerant, and have sampled both their gluten free sandwiches and baked goods. The gf banana chocolate chip muffin is the bomb! It sells out within a couple hours of opening so get there early. Always a line as soon as they open. Prices are great too, around $4.25 for a large latte with oat milk. Go now!
Conscious of allergies! They use tree nuts in some baked goods but usually do not use peanuts. Just have to ask!Croissants and biscuits are amazing.
Sugar & Twine is the perfect local coffeeshop in RVA with seasonal drink specials (that fall seasonal syrup!), signature pastries (the almond horns are a must!), and the homey aesthetic thats often missing in larger chains. Their menu accommodates different dietary restrictions, including vegan and gluten-free, so I began using S&T for corporate catering events to meet a variety of dietary needs. After a few years of enjoying everything on their menu, I requested S&T cater the brunch after my wedding. As a surprise to no one, the entire brunch was incredible! We had guests spanning the entire east coast who marked S&T as a must visit the next time theyre in RVA! I recommend the cheddar biscuits for savory-lovers and the raspberry bars for sweet-lovers. More so, I recommend saying hi to whoever is behind the counter helping you; theyll give you that right-at-home feeling that makes pastries taste even better!
Had trouble getting an online order to process as I was coming into town as they opened at 7 Sat morning- love that they were open when nobody else was yet till 8- the tomato garlic croissant was amazing like a pizza pastry, and I love their vegan breakfast sandwich to death. Oat milk latte is always on point
Super cute and cozy yet bright with chill decor. Gets very packed inside so I usually get mine to go. Coffee is delicious - the Thai coffee is addicting! Another perk is their baked goods. They are all delicious and they even have vegan and gluten free treats. They also sell typical coffee shop merch including Blanchard’s coffee. I highly recommend this spot. Perfect for grabbing a coffee while walking around Carytown.
Great coffee, great baked goods. Just within the limits of affordability. I just moved to Carytown and couldn’t be happier to discover that I could go here instead of Corporate Bank Cafe. Dankery
If you havent tried Sugar & Twine yet, what are you waiting for? I recommend the large latte and a breakfast sandwich on the cheddar biscuit.
Outstanding pastries, hot and fresh. Coffee was well made.
Delicious handmade coffees at non-ridiculous prices smack in the middle of funky, vibrant Carytown. The scones are particularly scrumptious. Nice to grab and go on a beautiful walk up Arthur Ashe Ave. toward the fine arts museum, if thats your bag.
Ordered a latte with seasonal syrup and a blackberry biscuit — both were delicious! They’ve perfected the right amount of sweetness for both the latte and the biscuit. I’m always worried the syrup will make the latte too sweet, especially with seasonal flavors, but it was PERFECT. The biscuit was also the perfect balance of sweetness, and the texture was just right. A delightful place that works like a well-oiled machine even with long lines.
I love this place! The coffee, pastries and staff are always very friendly.I will say the clientele is not kid friendly. I have experienced some sad things here as a new mom. As a childless person, I had a great experience all around! 5 stars, because obviously they cant control their clientele. Love this place a ton. Thank you for all the allergy sensitive options!
This place is very chic and delicious. I loved everything I got and they have vegan options! I got the vegan blueberry muffin, chai latte with almond milk and vegan breakfast sandwich. Everything was good. Limited seating! The only complaint I really have was that the vegan breakfast sandwich was only about a quarter of a full sandwich and it was $5! Everything else I thought a good price but that sandwich was a rip off. Not even a half. At least it was delicious.
Excellent cafe and drinks but the pastries are the real attraction.
Best coffee in Carytown - possibly near west end. All of the staff are amazing and nice. Their turkey blt is the best. They always have fresh pastries - jam biscuits are delicious.
Wonderful pastries. Food is made in house. A crowd pleaser. The next BEST THING on Cary St. in Carytown
Amazing selection of bakery treats, the breakfast sandwich was superb and it was worth waiting in the rain for! I am looking forward to returning!
Great service and great food! The staff member who served me was very friendly.
The biscuits are cheesy and flakey. Lots of great summer tea/lemonades
Awesome coffee drinks and somehow even better pastries. Sugar and twine put together a bunch of pastries for our little outdoor brunch time wedding and it was perfect. Almost always busy but service is usually quick and friendly. Don’t forget to tip!
I always love stopping in here when Im in Carytown and love a local place! Super cute shop and good drinks, staff has always been friendly. A decent amount of seating but also gets busy so it still fills up.
I go to Sugar and Twine regularly to get their Turkey BLT, which is my favorite sandwich in the area and also super convenient because I work in Carytown. Went there today and got said sandwich; took a bite and noticed a funny color. Opened the sandwich and there were these red brown and purple spots all over the turkey meat. I ordered it without the bacon so I ended up having a veggie sandwich today. Not sure what these spots are and I don’t want to make any assumptions but I was a little disappointed. Two stars instead of one because I really do love this place and go there all the time with friends and coworkers.
Sugar + Twine is definitely a favorite spot of mine in Richmond. I love walking through The Fan on a Sunday morning to go snag a warm cup of coffee and some of the best pastries around. Their staff has never been anything short of friendly and they seemed to have adapted well to 2020 with their COVID-friendly structure. Their pastries are definitely where they shine; theyre blueberry scone, fontina and thyme croissant, and sea salt chocolate cookie are among my favorite. Although I think their strengths definitely lie with their baked goods, the coffee is pretty tasty as well.Definitely worth standing in the line that traces down the sidewalk just for some of their tasty treats. (On that note: if youve never been to Sugar + Twine before, look out for the sidewalk markings for an indication of where to stand if youre in line).
I always try to hit up this place whenever Im in Richmond. Great coffee and every baked good Ive tried has been delicious 😋
So grateful this excellent coffee shop pivoted during Covid. Excellent staff. Great breakfast croissant. We get them every Sundaynwith coffee and head to the river. Very nice staff. Excellent pastries too.
THE SWEETEST STAFF and a real pleasant shop to stop by where you can get both a satisfying breakfast sando or pastry AND good single origin coffee. Another thoughtful, strong, local business.
Their Vegan Banana Chocolate Chip muffins are THE best muffins Ive ever had!!!! No exaggeration!! They are soooo good!!!!!
I love Sugar & Twine! Great coffee and lattes and delicious pastries (Vegan and GF options)!
Neat little spot. Great coffee, good lookin pastries. I had an everything bagel, the begal itself was tasty but I really appreciated the fact that they went ahead and smeared the cream cheese on it instead of handing me a packet. Its the little things.
New to the area and was on a morning walk with the kids... I had seen a huge line the day before so I figured it was good, and boy was it! Also staff is handling covid regulations like a champ. Two thumbs up!
Great coffee (love the seasonal options) and pastries! Because of COVID, they have set up a sidewalk window where you can order and pick up to-go. Pastry selection seemed more limited, but that may be why. Love that they have half off baked goods on certain weekday afternoons from 2-3 pm.
The perfect local coffee shop. Cheerful staff, top-notch baristas, clever seasonal drinks, handmade pastries — and the best gluten-free bread in town. Pre-COVID, a place for serendipitous encounters and a taste of Richmond community. Now, a friendly take-out window that somehow maintains a taste of togetherness while waiting in the sidewalk line.
Best croissants and almonds horns! The almond horns are grain free and the only thing I can eat safely!!
This is definitely a spot to check it out if you’re in Carytown. The coffee and food is on point, staff really friendly. During COVID-19 they’re open just to takeout, but is still worth it!
The asparagus and ricotta crossisant 👌🏼👌🏼. The flavoring in the latte was very light
Super appetizing. i had a cousin come into town and asked me to take him back here. the place has a nice atmosphere.
Absolutely love this place! Great environment and great menu. They have a wonderful tea selection and the baked goods are delicious! The coffee smells really good, but not being a coffee drinker, I cannot vouch for the taste. The sandwiches they offer are also very tasty. The prices are great, especially being on Cary. I highly recommend this place and will certainly continue to go back.
Was just accosted outside demanding I wear a mask though I stated I didn’t have one due to a medical exemption. There was not only a plexiglass barrier I’m front of me as I stood outside, but also the cashier was wearing a mask. The executive order clearly states that even INDOORS, much less outdoors, those that are medically exempt are not required to wear face coverings. Masks are not required outdoors in the crisp, clean air in any situation and especially not in VA. The cashier asked me to pull up the executive order which I did and then brushed it aside, “allowing” me to order. It was an uncomfortable, discriminatory situation, one that I feel the ADA should know about if I chose to pursue this further, and I will certainly not be frequenting this local establishment (that I have spent plenty of cash on before) anymore.
Their iced dirty chai is great, and most of their pastries as well- cant miss the ricotta and butternut squash tart.
Superb coffee!
I liked their breakfast sandwich building option. Their tea selection is limited, but the choices were new to me. Id go back just to try their different unique teas. The location is great, the food good, the service quick. Its too bad that it is so small. But that is part of its charm.
Great employees, delicious treats and drinks.
This is a good spot for breakfast if you are not a coffee drinker. The breakfast sandwiches are salty and good. The decoration reminds me of a perfectly planned Pinterest board. The iced and brewed coffee leave a lot to be desired. They need some additional direction on their brewing but the whole bean lineup is pretty solid.
Good coffee shop with great baked goods. Its always super packed though, so be prepared to wait in line for a while. Their sandwiches are great, too!
This place has great coffee. Also they have tons of great looking pastries!! The only negative thing I have to say about this place is that it is ALWAYS packed. I’ve been so many times and sometimes I’ve left because it’s so crowded inside. But if you’re looking for a quick coffee to go, this is your place!
Great coffee and pastries.
One of the best breakfast sandwiches in the city.
They are currently doing pre-orders of a week. As if I will know what I want to eat for breakfast a week from now. Ill remove my review when they come up with a better take out system.
Nice service and a variety of options. handmade breakfast foods and beverages. I like the atmosphere of the Cafe. Staff is always nice and polite. Actual store is really clean. Hidden gem for sure.
Like it a lot, especially the cheese biscuit. They always have some good interesting pastries and sweets. Good selection of specialty hot/cold drinks. The place is always packed and it would be great to be a little bigger.
I frequent this place (like pretty much every day). The coffee is always good, the staff is inviting, and the cookies are to die for! They do get busy, so plan your trip accordingly (especially if you’re like me and want a seat to study in).
Sugar & Twine is a bakery and coffee shop in Carytown. We stopped in on a Sunday morning and it was rightfully packed. Despite that, we didn’t have to wait long for our drinks. My latte with homemade hazelnut syrup was good!
Honestly the perfect place for day dates. Good coffee, never terribly crowded, nice atmosphere, late hours, and great location in Carytown.
This is one of the unique spots that has both really good coffee and pastries. Their coffee is nutty and delicious! It is often crowded here with tables close together in the small space. However, definitely a cozy environment. Emily Herrs murals on the wall are beautiful and pull the whole place together.
Cool atmosphere. Not crowded and easy to get work done in a peaceful but interesting space. And gluten free treats. And staff is so friendly.
Nice coffee shop, the iced coffee was really delicious. It seemed to be a nice place to work or just stop while walking around Cary Street.
Nice place, could deal without being insulted for sitting down and doin work while waiting for the line to be less than 20 people deep before making my purchase. Biscuits are good.
Im addicted to GF banana chocolate chip muffin.
I LOVE the atmosphere and that they have outdoor seating with a water bowl for dogs. There are even dog treats inside! The bakery items are always delicious. I use to come here several times a week over a year ago but I think their coffee supplier or beans changed. I think the coffee quality has gone down a bit but it’s still pretty good. I really love their iced peppermint tea.
Decent coffee, but the baked goods are too expensive. Also, theres only one bathroom in the whole place, and the place tends to get extremely crowded.Line can be long, and sandwiches can take a WHILE. Not necessarily a quick bite kind of place, but a sit and relax type (if youre lucky enough to find a seat)
Great atmosphere to spend some time in, by yourself or with friends. Drinks are on par with most other coffee places. This place is a step above as far as having the option to use glass/ceramic dining-ware (including metal straws), rather than paper/plastic. Ditch the paper straws, they just dont work. Its an environmental awareness fad that isnt solving anything.
Have lived in Richmond for 6 years, and this is my favorite coffee place! Try their blackberry biscuits - sweet, savory, and unique. S & T is always a pleasant spot to check out :)
Great atmosphere and is very popular. Has a good variety of coffee drinks and other beverages. Good pastry and dessert selection. Got hot chocolate and didnt like it, but have had coffee there before and it was good!
Yes! 100%! Its a busy Saturday afternoon in Carytown and even with the hustle and bustle I still have piping hot coffee, a delicious snack, and bar stool to sit on. The food reminds me of Denver, Co. It is beautifully made for a great price. My new fave spot.
Uber hipster, impossible to find anywhere to sit because its tiny and people sit there for hours. The food and coffee were good. But had to eat in my car.
Busy, but laid back. Nice to get good coffee in an oversized stoneware mug instead of a cardboard cup. Tasty bakery goods made on premises daily. Not cheap, but worth it.
A small but wonderful coffee shoppe and bakery in Carytown, nearly always packed, always delightful. You must try their quiche. Everything is baked on the premises and is wonderfully fresh and delicious. The coffee is amazing.
Perfect breakfast! Delicious! The place is small but just wait a little bit and there will be a seat. Nice ambiance inside. Busy but great staff!
Toasted croissant with egg, bacon and cheese. So freaking good! It looked so good and smelled so tasty I forgot to take a picture.
They have some amazing food to offer, and theyre coffee is pretty good too! I like that its a small hole in the wall coffee shop!
Love the mom & pop shops. Food was amazing, coffee is delicious. Alot of seats inside and out. A couch if you want to relax. Staff is very nice. And even though they were super busy when I was there, the wait was not very long.
Always enjoyed the coffee and service. They use Blanchards so no complaints there! Breakfast sandwiches are good but a bit overpriced for what you get.Overall I have no problem coming back here. A favorite coffee shop on mine
Good coffee
The pastry are amazing. I love the rotating new fun pastry. Nice people. Great location.
Great local coffee shop. I highly recommend checking them out while in Carytown!
Lovely, quaint coffee shop in Carytown. Fresh, handmade breakfast foods and beverages. I tried a dirty iced chai and was pleasantly surprised when it was made with actual spices as opposed to typical flavored syrups. The cheddar biscuit and maple scone were great handheld items to eat on my commute to DC. I foresee regularly visiting Sugar & Twine!
One of my favorite coffee shops! The coffee is always just right, the staff are always friendly and the space is lovely. It can be hard to navigate into during peak hours but being busy is good!
Quaint little place that has become a mainstay in Richmond. Great coffee, great sandwiches, great baked goods; its always busy and for a good reason.
I have been there twice -- the first time on my birthday and then today before I began work. On both occasions I got a box of delicious pastries. Today I shared the pastries with my law firm colleagues and they were delighted. This bakery is a welcome addition to Richmond.
This place is adorable! It’s a small shop and seating isn’t extensive inside, but there are a couple of tables right outside - perfect on a nice spring day in RVA. The coffee menu featured the standard beverages you’d expect, and their pastry display was impressive. I had a dirty chai and a small lemon tart - both were excellent. Despite the number of people in the shop, service was quick. I’m happy I was able to visit and look forward to returning!
Delicious pastries to accompany your hot beverage of choice. Cute spot to catch up with a friend. I highly recommend the cheddar biscuits.
Everytime I visit this place I have a good experience. I always just miss the right time to actually get a table though. They can make pretty good latte and the treats selection is nice. Didnt enjoy the breakfast croissant as much.
