Authentic Mexican culture under one roof! Dont expect English or anything fancy. Ive never been to Mexico, but everything in this over-crowded, indoor market, and restaurant made me feel like I could have been. The place is comfortably Mexican including shelved chips, cookies & sodas, chachkies, racked tabloids, even over-sized pinatas hanging overhead. And of course their food. I ordered the carne asada grilled steak and an all beef hard shelled taco. The shell was a little over cooked, but you could taste a hint of ground corn in it. Both were good w lime and their red sauce. This was my first time at La Jolla and really liked the experience.
I can’t believe that I just received my order of plantains and there literally were 7 pieces and I was charged over $6!!!! The container was large so I expected much more. Years ago I ordered plantains and got much more for less. I have it two stars because they were good, but plantains are so inexpensive that there is no reason to charge me $6 for 7 pieces! This is a huge disappointment. There is only one missing in the photo.
If I could give the younger brother who whole heartedly tried his best to serve me the correct food all whilst his bigger sister blocked his blessings in a numerous ways. She not only blatantly gave me the wrong food she proceeded to knock the old beef off the salad and top it with shrimp that I firstly asked for. I wanted so bad to tip however the young boys cash app was in her name and prevented me from further trust. It has been sent to the store number but I doubt little guy ever sees it smh. Thank you and be blessed Kim!
My go-to for authentic tacos and tortas. They also have a little market with essential ingredients, Hispanic candies, and snacks. 🥰
New favorite authentic Mexican restaurant. Found this place randomly and havent been able to stop going. The food is delicious and when youre finished you can buy some Mexican candy on the way out!
Best authentic Mexican food I had during my 6 months in Richmond. Absolutely delicious!
You smell the delicious food from the highway.. inside…fabulous food!I will be back often❤️
Want an authentic latin taste? Then look no further. Its a combined restaurant convenience store, so they were essential during the pandemic. All of the latino staff is super friendly and cater to all nationalities... Everyone loves the menu, and lunch combos are so rewarding. A gem of a place, and always a pleasant dining and takeout experience.
Before the pandemic la milpa was my go to place!!’ During the pandemic I unfortunately got sick this was when they were offering takeout only at the front entrance. I didn’t let that stop me from coming back it just took me a while to return! I decided to give them a try today and its nothing like it was before the pandemic. Food quality has went down hill even the house made salsa seems to taste off. It’s going to be a while before I visit again. Hopefully when I return things will have gotten better
I ordered the shredded beef taco. When I got it the beef was in small pieces and over cooked to the point it was hard. The Empanda wasnt what I expected either. The same meat was used. That was a waste of my money.
Great place to eat and they are great. Very welcoming I loved them.
The employees are all very sweet, the tamales are bigger than your face, hot and fresh. I stop here literally every time Im heading home through Richmond from a road trip, regardless of who is with me or why. I love the food.
Martín and his team are amazing. The homemade empanadas are super tasty and full! Welcoming and kind staff.Martín is also a huge community supporter specifically in youth development.
Always good food, no matter what time of the day youre there. 3 AM, 11 PM, Lunch, whenever. Ive been here a million times and it is the most consistent place Ive ever had food from. The tacos are amazing, huge burritos, some of the best tortas and pupusas Ive ever had. Theres also a free salsa bar with a decent selection of fresh salsas ranging from mild to extra hot. Theres a cool little market on the side too that sells everything you can think of. Always excited to stop by and grab some tacos. Ill be back soon.
We have been this place so many times and not have any issues until today!!!!!I am not sure what happened if it’s the ownership is change or not but food was horrible. Especially the tacos!! One taco $3.75 and it was taste like rotten steak. Chicken quesadilla was horrible as well. You might think how come a simple quesadilla can taste bad but it really was. I am sad and we will not return.
Absolutely delicious authentic Mexican . My brother and I went twice in one day it was so good !
Great food and service definitely going back the lion of 1011thefam approves 👍
Really good carne asada burritos! Reminds me of the Mexican food back where I am from (San Diego, CA) and some of the places I have been to in New Mexico. I got the rice and beans on the side rather than in the burrito. I was a little bummed they didnt have guacamole, but it was still really good with sour cream! They also have a lot of different good hot sauces! I recommend trying this place!
Took too long to get the 3 meals, quicker to order individually. Several single orders after us got food first. Maybe 25min wait versus 5min single meals. Order single..Good food though.
Best food I had in a long time.
If I could give this place 30 stars, I would. Ive never had a negative experience here. I always go late at night- and no, its not to avoid a line because this place definitely pops off at all hours. Their food is authentic, delicious, well- prepared, and ALWAYS served with a smile. I thought I would never find a Mexican restaurant in Virginia that would remind me of home (Southern California), let alone even come close to it. They have REAL 🌮🌮🌮!🤤I went there last night for the umteenth time, it doesnt matter what Im doing- I can never just drive by this restaurant, I always have to stop and grab a bite even if Ive already eaten. I had a bit of a complicated order... or maybe it was the language barrier...idk🤷🏻♀️. BUT my order was incorrect twice, which was probably my fault for being difficult or extra. Regardless... the girl who fixed my order (twice) was soooo sweet and patient with me and for her to do what she did in the way in which she did it, especially since they were packed with a line going to the door... I am beyond grateful for the continued superb service I receive every time I go to La Milpa. If you havent tried La Milpa, are you even living? You cant beat great food and superior service. Go there NOW! TODAY!.... and theyre open ALL the time 😁
Everything was more expensive than the menu i got 2 weeks ago. The queue for ordering at the counter is a bottleneck. Then waited 25 minutes for the food, with loud music blaring. The pozole came with no garnishes besides lime. Nothing in the broth except the meat and just a few kernels of hominy. The steak on the sope had a stale flavor. Never again!
From the service practices, its great; they are all bilingual and the food is cooked with proper care and they show respect for their heritage. I enjoyed my stay, I recommend this food place.
Its a small place inside of a store. Normally I dont mind this as long as the food makes up for it, but in this case the food took an extreme amount of time, they didnt have many things that were on the menu and the tortillas for the tacos werent fresh.
You want true authentic mexican? La Milpa is the finest real Mexican food in the RVA.
8/20/2018 Updated reviewMuch much better experience after waiting years to try them again.Gone is the Arrogant uncaring service, and in its place are the friendliest staff, with well laid-out and pictured menus now for the non Spanish speaker to feel comfortable ordering anything. The dining area is much nicer and well laid out, and now theres an outdoor patio and several tables, and although traffic buzzes by its pleasant enough if you want to eat outdoorsThe enchiladas, pupusas and gorditas were excellent and nothing close to americanizedThe chicharrones and pork rinds are fresh and huge and amazing and you wont find them anywhere in Richmond other than authentic Mexican restaurants.I look forward to coming back
Im not happy with the past few visits. we usually order ahead but when we dont it takes 30 minutes to 45 minutes wait there. I watched people who ordered after me get there food and eat and finish before we got out order and when I simply just asked to check on it she had an attitude. and then when she did go over there the bag of our food was magically ready. I asked for no cream or cheese on the flautas and even the other cashier told her in Spanish and maybe the cooks got it wrong again but there was cheese and cream all over making it super soggy seeming we had to wait 30 minutes . Also they squished my enchiladas on the bottom of the bag. And tell me why i have, language, carne. chorizo inside my chicken enchilada???? and I had to heat my beans and rice, they were iced cold. check your food still people. not cool at all. especially for the time they take to make the food up. Not so good service all the time, I dont complain or have an attitude and for this kind of service and food, not cool.
Unflavor tacos and they rice also was disgusting and very bland I couldnt believe it plus my order was wrong everything was downright nasty sorry but neveragain
I was there with a co worker really didn’t get nothing I just browsed around
Worst customer service EVER! They dont know how to make a bean and cheese burrito!!! Nor a burrito period!!! I will NEVER EVER step inside this place ever again. Try talking to them in English! U wont get your order right! A simple bean and cheese burrito.
Exactly right. Great food, great atmosphere. Will definitely visit again next time I am in the area!
The weekday combo is a really great deal for the amount of food. Plus, its delicious! So far Ive tried their mini burrito, enchiladas, flautas and tacos, in a variety of meats (chicken, lamb, etc) and veggies. And the horchata. I recommend it all!
My daughter loved the food thanks. Fresh hot and worth the wait. The wait was crazy.
Most authentic Hispanic restraunt in Chesterfield, hands down.
Very good, cheap and good service
If you like authentic Mexican food, youll love this place.
A very good experience and customer service was excellent. Very knowledgeable of her products and what works for different individuals.
There food is so good and fresh it was still hot when i got it from doordash im only ordering my mexican food from here!!
Fantastic local Mexican place. Really enjoyed the Cocktail de Cameroon.
We ordered too much because portions were decent. Food was good! Will be returning
Very cool and cultured aesthetic. Wide variety
Went for Birria tacos but they ran out . Mexican and American style tacos were great, I would have given 5 stars if they had Birria that day
This place is not open 24/7 I was trying to buy something Tuesday night but no one open the door .It was only one young guy maping the restaurant, but insted answer the phone he was ignored complet.Managers please change the hrs of service is no more 24 /7????.So disappointed never back to thisrestaurant
Food is supper good And prices are reasonable But not only is it a restaurant open 24/7 its also a store where you can buy snacks and more Im most definitely coming back again.
Excellent food. A lot of knick knacks indoors along with a spice shelf that is incredible
Was excited to try this place, even though they’re website says they’re open 24/7 I called asking to place an order and the man who answered the phone said they were closed. I was already at the restaurant and saw they had their open light on and customers inside eating. At first I just accepted it but than I sat there confused and called back asking why he would tell me they’re closed when I’m right outside and can see their open sign on and the man asked for my name, I didn’t give it because I didn’t even know why he needed it at this point and he ended up walking away from the phone and telling someone else to get it for him because he didn’t feel like dealing with me. Glad to know how this place runs now before I actually eat here.
Sabroso! This is AUTHENTIC Mexican food, so some poor reviews are from people who expect authentic Tex-Mex restaurants. The tacos here are expensive because the are large and stuffed! Two are plenty filling. The Pastor tacos are a highlight, subtilty seasoned with cumin and cinnamon, add the green salsa for a bit of kick and layered flavors, perfect! The chicken tinga is milder, but juicy. And the carne asada is also quietly seasoned, not spicy, just delicious. The sopes are also very good; I really liked the choizo. All came complete wth lime slices and various salsas. Cant wait to try the tortas next, and I imagine the huaraches are good as well. Will be a favorite!
The other day my boyfriend & I went & we waited more then 30 minutes to get our food.. I ordered some sopes de carne asada & when I came back home my food was all over the plate.. my boyfriend food was cold ( we only live 5 minutes away from there ).. costumer serves was horrible, never going back there!
Slows place ever, over an 1 1/2 wait to get your food.
I waited 10 minutes for the waitress but she never came to my table. Bad customer service. I’ll never back to this place.
I ordered my main order and came back in to order a hot tamale. I waited 40 min to get home and my tamale wasn’t in there. I figured I’m black and I received my order last between another Hispanic and white person who came well after me.
Okay, So if you know me I have written bad reviews but this is actually my first good one, and may I say they are friendly there flautas (taquitos) or their crunchy tacos are actually wonderful it is just good to go here right now.It is inexpensive so thats good they have so much creativity I love their culture like a Latina I love it they actually keep their mask on when they cook which is good they use gloves every time I go there I have so much love for the mil pa keep the good work
I love that they are open 24/7 with my crazy schedule this is perfect for me. Good prices and solid selection even at night. Most recently we got platanos and carne asada. The platanos included yorgut and cheese on the side and the carne asada included tortillas for your salad, rice, and frioles. It was a filling amount and absolutely worth the value. Ill keep recommending everyone I know here
Didnt expect a place to take so long on our order, spent 35 to 45 minutes to get my order of just 8 tacos...
Good lord these tacos are so flavorful and filling! If you want real tacos look no further! I had 1 chorizo, 1 carne asada, and 1 al pastor. I was skeptical at first but once I ordered and the food came it was a dopamine party! Extremely satisfying!!!! Will come back! Thank you for making great tacos!!!
Great food but slightly overpriced compared to other mexican restaurants. The prices are understandable though because they are open 24/7. Great place to get food in the middle of the night.
Great food, but not worth a 60 minute wait. I was 1 of 3 folks who the Saturday night shift crew forgot about while working through the dinner rush...
This place was great! Authentic Mexican food and environment! The staff is super friendly and helpful. I was shocked to find this place open 24/7. I was hurting for food at about 1 a.m. and looked at options on google and saw this place open 24/7. I had to call to make sure it was in fact true. Once I arrived, the food I ordered was awesome and very tasteful! The salsa was a very good spicy but you can get the mild version. They also have outside seating with covering. Check it out, you wont be disappointed.
Food is good.... when it’s made right. Unfortunately though, the absolutely deplorable level of customer service at this place has finally completely overridden that fact. This is not the first time my order has not been carried out correctly here, but the most recent time has driven me to feel the need to warn others. I visited this restaurant with a group of six people who all ordered burritos with their individual modifications. We ordered the burritos to go and when we arrived home, we started eating only to realize none of the orders were done correctly. We called the restaurant to inform them of their mistakes and they kept me on the phone for ten minutes only to argue with each other about who messed up the food and then tell us to come back and return the food so they could remake it. We arrived, spoke to the female manager and gave back our food and waited for thirty minutes, after which we inquired about our food again only to find out that the food had not even been started and they had placed our remake at the end of the list. At that point, the female manager whose directions had been ignored by the other girls spoke to the head manager. He proceeded to dump all our food in the trash, yelling angrily about how he was not replacing any of it, and then came to us. He told us to talk to him about our issue, but refused to even listen to what our issue was and instead yelled at us and ended up responding with “You can just get your money back because we obviously can’t meet your standards. Everybody else seems to like it” (gesturing towards the rest of the people in the restaurant, who I’m sure know now who not to speak to if they have a complaint about their food). I and the rest of my party are extremely disappointed at the lack of professionalism, insane level of disrespect and absolute disregard for even base level customer service which is evident at this establishment. Judging by the way that the manager of the store absolutely dismissed us and mocked our complaints, I suspect that if it were a group of men instead of women who had ordered from this place, our complaints would have been taken more seriously. (Initial order wait: 30 mins, Time arguing on the phone and then driving back to restaurant: 15 mins, Reorder wait: 30 mins. Total time wasted just to still be hungry: 1 hr 15 mins). DONT COME HERE IF YOU EXPECT SOMEONE TO CARE ABOUT YOUR FOOD.
Not open 24 hours as its advertised
Very good tacos. Little pricey. Not good at handling special requests.
Food is DELISH!! CUSTOMER SERVICE 💯💯💯
Good food, nice patio, fast service
Very disappointed with the servings this time around. We’ve order from here before and were happy with the servings and the food. Everything was thrown inside our boxes with dry crusted beans on the outside of all the boxes. We ordered over $40 worth of food. The taco salad had no avocados a sprinkle of lettuce and 2 slivers of thinly transparent tomatoe slices. Our beans were very dry. I also ordered veggie meals and they barely had enough vegetables to put eat on one tortilla, which we had to go back and get the tortillas because they werent in the box. I only wished I had checked everything before we left.
Cool place to get some Mexican ingredients if you are cooking. Also great selection of other Mexican products. Food was good. Wish tacos would of had warm tortillas. Aside from that. Worth checking out.
Truly authentic Mexican cuisine. Simple menu and they are open 24/7. Ive had the tacos, burritos, and papusas. You really cant go wrong. I recommend them all. I really like the Al pastor if you cant decide on a meat. The salsa bar has a plethora of choices. I usually go for the hot ones and I dont like my food super spicy. Dont be afraid to try the salsas. If you venture into the little dessert/bake shop area, I recommend the chocolate flan cake. Yum!
I like pretty muchIts a food store and restaurant 😋 ☺ delicious
I love la milpa! Open 24/7 decent prices and I have never been disappointed. The green avacado salsa is spicy but so good!
You should try carnitas once an a wile. Theyr good..
Good restaurant establishment good service and very comely tone.
First experience was great. Second experience not so much. Ordered take out via Toastab, restaurant said they never received the order. Went home to call my bank to dispute the charge only to have the restaurant call back and say the order was sitting in the kitchen the entire time. 2 round trips and 45 mins later, 1 of the 3 items was correct, everything was cold. Very dissatisfied.
God, do I love this place! There is nowhere else in Richmond that I can get my Hispanic fix at any hour of the day. The food here is beyond decadent with a pretty decent variety of choices. Honestly, I heavily recommend giving this place a try if you havent.
Shared lunch with 5 others in our group. Walk up, place order, pay for order, take receipt and number, wait for number, pick up order, take to condiments area, get fork - sauces - napkins, take food to table of friends, sit and enjoy.Delicious food. Great prices. They also have a deli area where they sell the meats they use for the food they serve. Fantastic option.
Delicious 😋
Good food, excellent service. Very pleasant atmosphere
Excellent Tacos!
I walked into La Milpa and I immediately knew I was going to love the place. This is a no frills Mexican Restaurant. If your wife wants a fancy appetizer you’re in the wrong place, if your kids are going to ask for chicken fingers you should probably find someplace with a ball pit because this is definitely not the place for you. However, if you want to know what tacos want to grow up to be then you’ve come to the right place. The tacos are absolutely life changing, I had a tamale and immediately felt like my entire life was one big lie, and the pupusa.... An earlier reviewer mentioned leaving because they looked at them weird, I’ve been in 3 times now and the only time they look at me weird is when I dance around the plate and give praises to the taco gods that reached down and blessed La Milpa. If you don’t want to ruin Taco Bell trips for the rest of your life stay away, enjoy your sad life of fake tacos.
Food is surprisingly bland and overpriced. Ive tried twice and I cant. Sorry, not very good
It doesnt matter if you ask for something specific like no onions they will pile them on anyway, we went there to get Tacos the other day and we waited almost an hour and a half we were told 20 minuets they still got three order wrong
Excellent food, but wait was too long. (40 min)
Excellent food. We enjoyed the soft tacos, salsa bar, and tamales. Horchata is very good. Wide range of proteins available. And they are a 24/7 shop! Well be back.
Amazing! Best Mexican food since I left SoCal. The tamales are huge.
Fresh authentic food!
The wait as always long
Nice atmosphere, very friendly service. Nice change from Taco Bell, (although I DO love Taco Bell still). Ordered a burrito, ground beef. It was good. My husband got a tongue taco which he said was ok, but he was a bit disappointed with it. Hes from Mexico and its hard to find a GOOD tongue taco in the area. Variety of meat choices including lamb along with beef, chicken etc.
Its just ok but doesnt compare to other mexican cuisine nearby. Its way overpriced and they got my order wrong twice in a row. Food was stale tasting and the bar for condiments was very unclean. The only plus is the gift section which has some very creative day of the dead dolls and gifts. The atmosphere was not packed but everyone I encountered there except 1 guy did not speak English. Thats a huge issue for me especially when you are trying to order food. I ordered simple tacos and they gave me some steak ones instead and overcharged me on them based on the menu I saw there. The wait was long and they were rushing you out the door. I will go a half a block away and get better food and service.
Amazing place! The food and dessert are delicious! The amount of food is good too. The Carne Asada is my favorite. Service is quick and the staff are really really nice. We mentioned a food allergy once in passing as a general comment, three weeks later a staff member made a recommendation based on that. Best Mexican place in town and also open 24/7. As medical workers its the best place we can grab a bite after finishing work with our schedules. Really happy to have La Milpa near us! Highly recommended!! Definately give them a try the food is amazing.
I have no doubts about the authenticity of the cuisine here. The menu, the staff, the decor, and the food are all as authentic as can be.That said, the food I had was just ok. It wasnt bad, but it wasnt good, either. My steak was a stringy, chewy thing. The chicken was paper thin and so salty that it might as well have come from the sea. The sausage was terrific, and the rice was perfect. No complaints there. My wife ordered a chicken burrito which was dry and bland. A few squeezes of lime livened it up a good deal. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. You should try it if authenticity is your goal, but authentic doesnt always equate with great.
Theyre open 24/7they always have great customer service every time I visit with a wide variety of items other than food they also have very delightful desserts as well. This establishment didnt deviate from its original culture as well which is also a great feeling to have while eating there.
They didnt understand nothing I was saying. I just pointed an ordered what the lady pointed at. The food was nicely seasoned, but they should have someone on staff that speaks English so they can cater to their non-speaking Spanish customers. Other than that, friendly service!
Service was friendly. Food was good, but slow coming out. Very clean. Fairly steady stream of customers considering it was 10/1100 on a Mon or Tues night. Authentic
