I went this afternoon to get my first pair of climbing shoes after getting a membership at a bouldering gym in town. The guy that helped me was super friendly and knowledgeable and we were able to find a pair that fit and was a good price in no time!

Prices are comparable to the big outdoor stores, I always give local the first shot at earning my business before trying elsewhere. Good store quality products.

Salem Summit is a wonderful store and I want to share a recent shopping experience. I purchased a few down-like blankets to give as gifts for Christmas. When opening one of these gifts, the tape on the box was cut with a knife, and the blanket inside was also slit. We were so sad about this mishap! When I contacted the store to ask if they would consider giving us a small discount to replace the damaged blanket, was I ever delighted and surprised when the owner Al Tandy, said yes! When I brought the damaged blanket in (on the off chance it might be discounted and resold) we were not only offered the chance to keep it, but the manager Tory, was kind enough to show me how to repair it with nifty clear patches, available for purchase. So I was able to get a new blanket for a small discount and in addition, keep the one that was damaged and newly repaired by Tory. I was very touched by their kindness. There are other outdoor stores in our area to choose from but Salem Summit is special and we will remember them for this exceptional and thoughtful service. (As a side note, they are following Covid precautions well and I felt very safe while shopping there.)

Local, helpful staff, but dont expect REI or Amazon level selection. They have brands they like and curate. Unfortunately also dont expect your size to in on the off season. You can make it a stop if you have 2 weeks to wait, but not if you need it now.

Great local outdoor shop. All the staff are friendly and knowledge. On top of that, you can see they are enthusiastic about the outdoors and helping you find what you will need.They have a large selection for the size of their store, and what they dont have, they are happy to order for you. Ive ordered climbing shoes, mountaineering boots, glacier glasses, and much more, and every time it was exactly what i needed.

Great local store for outdoor gear. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Sure you could probably get some things a little cheaper online, but when you need that peronal touch to pick out the right backpack, for instance, this is where you need to go.

In a new location now with much more space and inventory. Great service and a selection of items that are hard to find elsewhere. You can also rent a variety of equipment here including backpacks, snowshoes, skis and SUP boards.

This is a great place to go for outdoor gear. They usually have a sale rack or two for out-of-season clothing. The building isnt quite large enough to be a replacement for REI but you can definitely get your Essentials here and the staff are very knowledgeable about what selection they do have. They have absolutely done the best they can with the room that they have got, and I would love to see them expand or open another location someday.

In this day of instant internet gratification local establishments like SSC are a beacon of old school customer service. They also have a killer selection of gear that is second to none in the valley. Be sure to stop in if you are downtown Salem.

Ive always had a good experience at Salem Summit. I have rented snow shoes from them on multiple occasions and the staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable. Ive also purchased some hiking pants (Prana) from this location. Im really hoping this store will get into snowboarding equipment also so that I dont have to purchase things in Portland.

My 4 adult kids have been coming regularly to buy climbing gear here. I had heard the owner was from the same area I grew up in the Midwest. I happened to notice the store so I went in to introduce myself. The gal at the counter made me feel as though I was imposing on the owner, but she went to see if he would come so I could introduce myself. She came back and it was clear he did not want to be bothered.My husband and I are both business owners here in Salem. We take pride in Customer service and how we treat others. I was absolutely dumbfounded that he would treat someone that way and he has certainly lost our business.

This new-ish store in downtown Salem has some familiar outdoor brands mixed with others not normally found here, like Outdoor Research and ArcTeryx . The inventory featured a good selection of coats, shoes, sandals, gloves and camping and climbing necessities. The clearance rack had good values.
