Love this shop! Their chocolates are delicious, and you can also see their equipment that they have been using since the 1800s to make their candies. It is a great visit and fun.
No signage on the exterior of the building to even know that this was a business. The only sign was one indicating that a mask was required. The windows had a dark tint which I understand is helpful so nothing melts but there are posters set in front windows that obscure the view so you cant see in and identify the business. Upon entering there is a very pleasant aroma and a wide variety of chocolates and funds. A few novelty candies are also there.
Cute store- line went pretty quick. I was disappointed the selection wasnt greater. Id have expected salt water taffy and other goods but the Gibralters and the BlackJack were good finds.
Beautiful historical neighborhood, shop owners are friendly and helpful, delicious old-fashioned candy options.
The candies are so good! We loved the fudge and truffles. I definitely recommend going to this candy shop if your visiting or just want a good treat.
The place is not the same smaller less organized ask for 1 pound of fudge an ended up paying for 2 pounds do they not know how to weigh better place 1980 1990. Not the same
Great and delicious confectionary treats, that are never a disappointment.
PROS: One thing i liked about this place was that everything was made in store. Their variety was large when it came to chocolate and fudge and since they made it I know itll taste better than store bought. The prices were also reasonable considering its made in house.CONS: When I went in I expected to see more than just chocolate. Also nobody greeted us, asked us to try samples or if we needed help looking for anything, and just had their backs turned towards us. It felt like they didnt want to deal with us.OVERALL: Definitely a place Id go to if I was with someone with a uncontrollable chocolate or fudge obsession but for someone like me, who likes chewy candy more, Ill have to pass next time
If youre a chocolate fiend like me, I highly recommend stocking up. The pre-boxed chocolates and truffles are so good. If youve ever had a chocolate and been disappointed in the vaguely flavored grainy sugar filling, these chocolates will be your salvation. They really taste freshly made with fillings made from real ingredients. We already devoured all the ones we brought home and Im mourning the loss. Id buy a dozen boxes if I went back. Such nice proprietors.
Such a cool little piece of history and we were blown away by how cheap our total came to be for our chocolates and fudge!
We went here today while on a visit to Salem. The women who own the store were so pleasant and helpful. Great people to talk to and they gave us awesome suggestions about what to see in Salem! The fudge we bought was so delicious!
Amazing candies. Totally bummed out they were out of chocolate covered cherries. They make the best Ive ever had
Cool spot with lots of old fashioned candies. The staff was very nice and helpful. The candy was so good.
Received my order the other day and it was completely wrong. I emailed and they have promised to send the correct order. Well see how it goes. **Update: the correct order arrived and I have to say: these are the best turtles you can get *anywhere*! OMG, YUM!!!!!
The cutest shop-the sea salt caramel fudge is my favorite and the prices are just right. They also feature some historical candies from when the shop first opened
When we go to Salem we always do here. The molasses puff candy makes it worth the trip in itself but since I am a chocoholic this place just makes me smile.
Still the most adorable and awesome candy store!
The first place I have found rocky road fudge. There is so much there that you never want to leave. Great customer service as well
Staff was great but the chocolates tasted stale and of poor quality, despite the $$$!Very disappointing!
Candy is ok. Very rich and sugary. Lady there was nice and cute store.
Beautiful selection of handmade candies! Wonderful history of the shop and family. Great place to visit, especially for seasonal treats!
Great selection of chocolates is a understatement. I saw a filling coming in two different chocolates and three types of chocolate covered cherries.
Very nice place and great chocolate! Unfortunately not Ada accessible
Mean people work there. Not very nice.
First time visit on 10/17/2020 for me and my son. The owner was very nice and so were the staff. Greeted by a hello and welcome and they even answer questions. Hard to choose what to get. The fudge is amazing. Cutest place ever. Candy is out of this world.
Great candy shop with a charming and knowledgeable clerk!
Heard about this place for its homemade fudge & candy, product tastes fine. However as I was picking my order there was a camera man behind the counter filming, and he definitely pointed the lens right on my face for at least a minute. There were no signs informing customers that we might be filmed, not a single staff member or film crew asked for my consent - even though due to covid customers were instructed to line up outside and wait several minutes to enter so there was plenty of opportunity. Not to mention, while I was waiting in line outside, a local walking by with his kid in a stroller made the effort to tell all of us in line that this place was overrated and not worth it. I say listen to that local
Its a very small shop and it didnt have the Black Jack candy that are so famous for. I was very disappointed.
The turtles are amazing!!! Lovely shop & great, friendly service!!
Super crowded and stuffy. There’s no structure so it’s just mayhem trying to get a place in line and keep it. I got cut three times trying to buy chocolates but it all worked out in the end and the chocolates were delicious. The salted caramel is the best!! We tried about 14 flavors and the salted caramel blew the rest away.
Love your puffs but now cant eat them your making them to dark hard to eat when your older that way.
A must visit for Fudge, Turtle and Gibraltar Candy
Nice lil candy shop. Prices are a bit steep on somethings but you can tell they put their love into making the candy.
Awesome chocolate will be back
Awesome candy store I was surprised how great the fruit slices were. this place is great for chocolates and jelly candies. I am going to stop by there for Christmas for presents come December. very friendly lady behind the counter helped me they are awesome! This is worth the stop.
Great history, great chocolates, great staff
Such a cute chocolate shop! My dads favorite sweets are here and i make sure to stop every time i visit.
Excellent candy, the only thing sweeter were the ladies working.
Amazing candy and friendly people. The candy pizza was yummy, and the peanut butter cups were probably the best Ive ever had.
Omg.. their candy is so delicious 😋👍🤩🍬🍫
Very wide variety of candy and chocolates. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Next time I come to Salem, Ill certainly be making a stop!
What a caring bunch of employees, i visted from the great south where we pride ourselves in the words of kindness and respect. I have been through yankee cities past week and have been sadly exsposed to animals running the law. Just absolutely no LAW AND ORDER,, rather it reminded me of 3rd world countries. I made my to this village and saw how true, YANKEE AMERICANS LIVE., everyone should visit and cherish this REAL AMERICANS MATTER ATTITUDE. WONDERFUL CONFECTIONS, AND FABOLOUS DOWN HOME CUSTOMER SRRVICE. Thank you for reminding me that there are lovely folks in liberal, freakish, criminal, filthy statesOnce again excellent American folks
Very cool historic candy company with lots of yummy treats!
Great variety of hand made candies amd the fudge was excellent.
These candies have become an anticipated Christmas treat for the family. Having them local is a treat of fantastic windfall. They absolutely know their business. Worth a quick peak if only for the smells and aesthetics!
Nice candy store. Nothing spectacular just good candy.
Way over rated and priced. Not worth the 1 hour I stood in line to get it.
My friend Gary aka Gigi Gill took us to the Ye Olde Pepper Companie, where we spend about an hour shopping for a variety of chocolate treats. We purchased Taffy, and the famous turtles that made Ophra’s 10 best things list. We purchase chocolate and candies for everyone we know, including ourselves. We have enough chocolate to get us through any apocalyptic event. This is a MUST place to go when visiting Salem.
I feel if I had enough money that I didnt mind spending I could buy enough until i get sick. Everything here is amazing. Forsure my eyes are bigger then my stomach when I come here.
Theres not much better than getting fresh and homemade candy!
Very cute quaint candy shop in Salem. Saw all their confections in little shops in Boston and thought it be great to stop by the actual candy store. Great variety of vintage items, as well as traditional chocolate items! I’d highly recommend stopping in and seeing the historical shop.
The candy is delicious and appealing. Staff is friendly and attentive. Love stopping by for a chocolate treat.
The candy is amazing, but the supervisor, Jude, is so rude I will NEVER go back. She was saying the most horrible, demeaning things to her employees. I cant believe anyone so unprofessional is still employed at such a wonderful place. Ive been coming here for years and the sweet, caring staff has always made me feel right at home until now. I am sorry to say they will be losing a long-time customer until they learn how to treat their staff better.
I love this little place. Its just like any other candy shop but it has the sentimental touch of being the oldest shop in the US. The candy is always super tasty and they have a reall good variety of homemade treats. Definitely recommend the visit! Parking can be a little rough given the streets in Salem are primarily for residents but I have gotten lucky and found street parking right by it every time.
The oldest candy company in America. Across from the House of Seven Gables so easy to find. I bought candy that would have been sold during Hawthorns time. Cool
Nice little family owned candy shop. They are known for their Gibralters, which are just large versions of the pillow mints you get in a restaurant. The chocolate is delicious.
Very small and unique candy shop, located across the House of Seven Gables. Its a must see if youre in the area. They offer plenty of home made authentic chocolates, fudge, taffy and more. There was a line to get in when I walked up to the store. The associate hands out samples of black jacks, which I picked up afterwards. Try the black jacks, you wont regret it. Service at the register is fast, even though there was a long line.
The owners and candy are as sweet as can be. Everything we purchased was fantastic! Definitely pick up a bag of old fashioned vanilla caramels.
Absolutely love this place! They are famous for their chocolate frogs but my favorite is the fudge! Yummy! They are very friendly and I love the vintage ambient. It really looks like if you were traveling on time.
Visiting from Virginia Beach and made it a point to stop by because I had heard great things about this place. It was a busy weekend for them, so we waited in line for over 30 minutes just to get in the door and was then treated like dirt once inside. The lady that seemed to be running things was embarrassingly rude to her employees, which was awkward and uncomfortable, but when she turned her anger on me and told me to leave if I didnt like what I saw and heard... I couldnt believe it! I have never been treated like that by any business that I was trying to give money to before. So if you do stop by and Asia is working, turn around and walk out. No one should have to be treated like that!On the up side, the chocolate was delicious!
Service: OutstandingLocation: PerfectCrowd: There was a line that wrapped around the small building.Chocolate: FANTASTICWe bought a small assortment of candies but I was most pleased with their fudge. There were other places around the area that I tried as well but their fudge was the best.
This place is the oldest candy store in America and they know what they are doing. The candy is delicious. I recommend trying the black jacks if you have never had them before. Super good.
Disappointed that they do not make their candy. Prepacked products with own lable is not what I remember as a kid. Tourist trap.
Their chocolate is amazing!! Great selection. Even the kids found plenty to buy. We plan to order from them and have it shipped to Iowa. The 2 female employees were very friendly and helpful. Great place.
Very nice candy shop with amazing chocolate. The chocolate rocks are a must. 3 stars because the young lady at the register should be a lot kinder and more patient with her elder co-worker, since she was very helpful and gave me a map of Salem when she saw the one I had in my hand wasnt very good.
Very small but everything they make is wonderful. Totally worth the possible short wait to enter. Staff is delightful
This quaint little shop is right across the street from the House of Seven Gables exhibit in Salem and takes you back to a time when confectioneries were less mass produced. Its a little on the small side so it is not easy to maneuver around the shop when theres a dozen or more people in there, but it does give you time to look closely over everything. I picked up some assorted chocolates and a licorice pipe, while my kids purchased root beer barrels, string licorice, and some chocolates shaped like seashells. You are going to pay a premium for these delights but its worth it when you take that first bite.
The oldest candy store, you got to go! Prices surprising reasonable. Lots of gummies and great chocolate 😋 check it out when in Salem.
Black Jacks were awesome
The chocolate here is amazing! Cute shop right near the water
Really delicious candies and fun old timey treats. Ive never seen cranberry popcorn anywhere else!
The very best chocolate in Salem! One of my favorite shops on Derby St,bring shopping money.
How blessed I am to live so near to the best confectionery in America.
I love the candies! Like the idea of this shop being small, it gave it that old time feeling.. People were nice. I just wish I would have bought more candy to bring home...
Fun store, and great tasting candy too!
This place has everything you could ever want. Todays visit was for a special birthday present. So lucky to have this in my city.
What a grand selection of homemade candies from Americas oldest candy store! The smell once you walk in the door hearkens back to a much simpler time when you would run down to the corner with a dime for a treat. The prices, unfortunately, have increased, but their selection is second to none.Try the Gibralters, the classic candy confection that made Ye Olde Pepper Company famous.
Great candy
Candy terrific...always fresh. Great service!
Absolutely delicious. ..we sampled a bunch of different chocolates(including the cranberry turtles) and everything was amazing! The lemon drops were also fantastic we will definitely be coming back soon :-)
If you have a sweet tooth, this place will exceed every expectation, the truefulls (thats how they spell them) are life changing.
Loved their selection of chocolates. Something for everyone, definitely recommend!
Great candy shop with a ton of history. Great selection of milk and dark chocolates as well as fudge. Well worth the stop if youre in town.
Like others have said, its a small, quaint shop that can only fit perhaps ten people. But, they offer quite a nice variety of sweets. They no longer make their candy on premises. They make their candy at a larger location on another town.
