I went into the shop today and was absolutely blown away by the atmosphere here. I have never felt so welcome, or been so impressed by how kind and genuinely caring Paul and his team were. The selection of instruments they have is amazing. They deserve more than 5 stars based on the experience that I had today.

This by far the best shop I have been to. I originally went in to have my dad’s fine violin fixed. Andy was very helpful and went out of his way to figure out how to fix it and could even tell us a bit about the violin itself. Although ultimately it was too damaged to be worth fixing, Andy was thorough and spent a few months looking into it before giving us the verdict. When we picked it up, Chris was incredibly sympathetic and spent a long time with my dad to find a replacement. I also went in a few weeks ago to look for a violin myself, and Chris and Sarah spent hours with me going through different violins in my price range. At no point did I feel pressured to buy anything or rushed (other places sure did), and was able to play different violins in a back room away from others. Sarah helped me tremendously and even played several for me in a blind test. I spent several days going all over Northern Utah searching, and no one came close to the quality as this shop. I was even able to get the sister violin to the one my dad purchased, which is pretty special to me. I have nothing but praise for this shop, and (literally) couldn’t find a better violin elsewhere.

This is where my mother purchased my first full-size violin over twenty years ago and I have been coming here ever since. It is the only place I will go for my own instrument. I have never had a bad experience in this shop. I was a little worried that when Peter passed away things might not be the same. But I am still met with the sound of plucked strings when I open the door and honest, knowledgeable, reasonably priced service every time. Love, love this shop.

I honestly have no words to express how great this place is!!! I had recently bought a cello from them, and it sounded pretty good, but it needed a little bit of work on it, and let me tell you, they made that cello sound like a completely different instrument and they made it sound so beautiful. I highly recommend you take your instrument here, and if your looking for a cello, violin, viola, this is the place to go! Thank you Peter Prier & Sons Violins!!

Got a violin as a gift from a family member but needed a string replaced and a bow, called them before going to get informed about pricing and what services they provide. John was very helpful with the information he provided over the phone. Called a few other places as well but saw them as my best option. At the store Paul was very attentive and courteous and gave us great information. They had also quoted me on the phone for a bow that they ended up not having in stock so he gave me a higher quality bow and respected the price quoted to me. Since I am restarting my journey with the violin he encouraged me to continue. Will definitely look to them for further needs!

I decided to get back into regularly playing violin after several years of not playing, so I decided to stop at the Violin shop to get some help getting back on my (music) feet. Not only did the staff at Peter Prier and Sons help me, but they went above and beyond. Chris was so kind to help me pick out the perfect violin. He’s very knowledgeable and so so helpful. I not only found the violin that I love, but he threw music passion back into my bones and left me feeling on top of the world. Thank you so much for your help! I love the people here at Peter Prier! I am a music student at byui, so keeping my musical equipment ship shape is extremely important to me. A while back, I had a repair done on my violin, (I got a huge crack in the face of it- which was devastating) and they were so willing to work with me and my budget. My violin actually sounds much better after all the fixes and tweaks they did on it. More recently, I purchased a bow from them, and I absolutely love it. It enhances the sound of my violin so well, and it looks beautiful. They have kind employees who are accommodating and highly skilled. I would 1000% recommend.

Took my son in to find a bow at the suggestion of his teacher. Chris knew exactly where to start for the type of player my son is based on his teacher. He didn’t try to up-sale, even giving us a less expensive bow as an option. My son was able to play and test the bows with no pressure. We felt very covid safe, having an appointment and the cello room to ourselves. As we left with a beautiful bow that fit him and his cello, My 14 year old said “that was true gamer 11/10.” As the mom it was a special treat to be able to provide my son with an upgrade and reward his practicing and feel confident that it was actually an upgrade.

We had a wonderful experience. The entire process of choosing a violin for my 10yo daughter was amazing. Instruments were presented for my daughter to play within a price range but she was given no indication about the price or which violin was best. It was all about what sounded best to her and her playing style. It was quite impressive watching Mr. Prier walk her through the process. We will absolutely be back when my daughter is ready for a full size!

I highly recommend this shop! My daughter recently began taking violin lessons and we had the opportunity to use a hand me down violin from a family member. We were hesitant to try and fix up the old instrument because we knew how much it could potentially cost. When we called other music stores, we were given a quote of around $35 for just a consultation. But Priers said they would consult for free, so we headed in. After speaking with one of the owners, who was incredibly kind and enthusiastic about my daughter learning the violin, we were very comfortable leaving the violin for a little work that might cost around $45. He said if they needed to do more, they would call first. They called exactly when they said they would. To our utter amazement, they had done several things beyond what they said they would do, but only charged us the $45 that was originally quoted! They did this because they love seeing new students and are passionate about helping them get started. They understand how intimidating it is to step into a music store and not know whether it will be hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you need help getting an instrument fit to play or are looking to obtain a new one, and you are scared about cost, please call Peter Prier and Sons. Chris was who helped us, but weve spoken with his co-owners and employees and everyone was incredibly helpful and kind! We are beyond thankful!!

From the second we walked through the door we felt like family! My 7 year old daughter was ready to size up to a 1/4 size violin. Bree (spelling?) Took us into her care, and treated my daughter as if she were picking her dream full size violin. With an array of multiple tiny violins spread out on a velvet table she patiently waited as my daughter tried each one to select the one with her favorite sound. Paul and Chris made their way in and out of the room clearly passionate, and excited to see a young violinist finding her love of the instrument. In the end her new violin was given all the care and attention a high dollar full size would have been given. And my daughter had one more beautifully positive building block in her violin journey.

Not only did they roll out the red carpet and let me (and my teacher) try more than two dozen bows, I never once felt like they were criticizing my choosing an electric instrument. Had the most amazing experience at Peter Paul Prier! My daughter decided that her next project at school should be the rebuilding of a decades old violin found in a dusty corner of the school and teach herself how to play. She took this relic to the aforementioned store this afternoon and they could not have been nicer. Chris offered to get the violin in working order free of charge and showed us all around their very cool shop. They have made a fan for life...I am sure all my friends across the globe that play know this family, and it was just so cool that they took the time and interest in a young girl and her project! Following visits to many violin stores in and out of state, I visited Peter Prier & Sons Violins this past month, hoping to find what I couldnt find at the other stores. A young lady spent several hours with me, trying out violins and bows. Then, into the room entered Daniel Prier; the most knowledgeable and friendly guy I have ever met. He knew the history of every violin and was very instrumental in assisting me in choosing the perfect one I drove home with. The next week, my music instructor was so impressed playing this violin that she had a hard time putting it down. Her words . . . I love it.May I recommend to those searching for the perfect violin, to visit with Daniel Prier. He will treat you like a golden nugget and provide you with the most wonderful violin shopping experience you could ever hope for.In closing, when you enter the front door of the shop, look up and you’ll see the violin on the ceiling playing a sweet welcome tune for you. Years ago we were traveling to Salt Lake and decided to stop by the store. My son had recently started playing violin and while he was quite a beginner he was very passionate about it. Chris came over and showed us a number of instruments and encouraged Jacob to play as much as he wanted. We thought this was quite nice as he knew we were just passing thru and would not be buying anything. After about 15 minutes another gentleman came over and told Jacob that he could tell that he “understood music” by listening to him. He then said “young man I have a surprise for you” and asked us all to come into another room. He took out three instruments, all Stradivarius and started playing them for us. It was of course Peter. It was a magical moment, beyond description and became family lore. We went back to Peter’s store a number of times until we moved from the area. Thank you for being so generous to a young boy, we miss you.

I traveled a long distance to Utah for a family reunion during the summer. I brought my violin bow with me in hopes of having it re-haired by Peter Prier and Sons Violins while I was there. I had heard good things about this company so I wanted to give them a try. I called them about getting my bow re-haired before heading home and they went out of their way to have it done for me in a very timely manner. In fact, one of their staff members met me half way to give me my bow when it was finished so I wouldnt have to drive all the way back into Salt Lake again since I was staying in Lehi. So, let me tell you here and now... customer service and quality of work is outstanding. And, if you live quite a distance from their business, they have staff that may very well be able to work out an arrangement with you to deliver your instrument to you when its finished. Needless to say, this company comes highly recommended!

I have very little musical experience, so when my daughter told me she wanted to join orchestra, I didn’t know where to start. I googled “violin shops” and this one game up, it looked like it would be very interesting, like a museum, but propbably expensive and more suited to the experienced connoisseur, not us, but I couldn’t help but think we’d be inspired there...and then look elsewhere to spend our money. It was magical from the moment we saw the establishment, through the windows, we saw craftsman building violins, and when we opened the door, the strings of a violin overhead were engaged, then I heard the customer in the store say he was in the symphony, and I thought, this place definitely isn’t going to accommodate needs like ours, but how can we not at least take this experience in? To our surprise, out experience was even more inspiring than we thought and they were extremely generous and helpful, we ended up getting everything we needed, and I’m confident the prices and attention we received could not have been better anywhere else. Our experience was amazing, we both shed tears of gratitude, joy and wonder as we left. I feel blessed that went to Peter Prier and Sons.

As a professional violinist who plays in the Utah Symphony, I take tremendous care of my violin and I am also meticulous about regular maintenance. I had an open seam that I needed to fix within the same day. Despite warnings from my colleagues in the Utah Symphony, I went to Peter Priers shop because it is close to where I live. The glue job itself is average, and there were a couple of scratch marks on my violin that werent there when I brought it indicating poor workmanship or simply a lack of care for the instrument during the repair process. The most insulting part is they tried to charge me $90 for glue job. Ive been to plenty of instrument shops in NYC, Chicago and Robertsons in Albuquerque and Ive never paid more than $30 for an open seam. Not even the most expensive shop in NYC (Rene Morel when he was alive) would dare charge anywhere close to $90 for gluing an open seam. I think their clientele are generally clueless parents and local music students that gets hustled because they dont know any better. In the words of my colleagues, Dont go there as this is a scam shop that will actively overcharge you for shoddy work. I will be doing all my repair works at JP Lucas instead, who is someone that everyone of my colleagues recommended in the first place.

I could not afford to buy a new instrument at the time, I chose to take my violin to a well known local violin shop. The luthier did the basic set up on my instrument (new sound post, new bridge, fitting both, after length on fingerboard, restrung the bow). When I got the violin back, he did not have me test it. He just had me pay and leave. I am not a professional so I didnt question this. A week later, I brought the violin back as it still had the problems. He seemed very annoyed with me for bringing it back. It was very obvious. He made some slight adjustments to the sound post while I was standing there. When I was still not completely satisfied his exact words were I cant make it what its not. I was very frustrated. I know he cant. I was asking him to try and help me find whatever was wrong, because I knew it didnt sound that way when I bought it. He acted as though, because I had not bought the instrument from him, it was beneath his notice to look at it. I left the shop feeling hurt, discouraged, and embarrassed. I paid almost $500 for this basic set up, and had the same issues. From this I decided I needed to just deal with my violin until I could purchase another one. Fast forward to a month ago...My violin had gotten worse. I play with a symphony, and I study with an amazing doctor of violin performance. I only say this to emphasize how often I use my instrument. It is a lot. I needed to have an instrument that was playable. In a fit of frustration I posted my violin/bow on KSL with an as is status for 1/2 the price I paid for the combo. I started contacting every local luthier about purchasing a new violin. When I contacted Peter Prier, I was hesitant, because I had been told they had gone down hill. They were so genuine and concerned. They said to bring my violin in and they would love to look at it. I brought it in that day. They told me what was most important was for me to be happy with my instrument, and if they could fix it so I didnt have to buy a new one, they wanted to! Already so much of a different as attitude than I had recieved before! I felt hopeful for the first time. I told them, this was my last hope with the violin. If it couldnt be fixed to just tell me, and I would buy a new one.The luthier Andy was amazing. He took 2 days to look over my instrument and thoroughly diagnose it. They did not charge me any extra for the diagnosis. He called, and sent videos to me to explain what he had found. They explained everything to me before doing the work. The lining inside the violin had come unglued, and one of the ribs had come undone as well. The fingerboard had knots, divots, and the afterlength was off. The bow was curved the wrong direction, and had a twist in it! Andy had to take the top off. He reglued the inside. Even checking and gluing parts that hadnt come undone yet. Replaned the fingerboard, redid the after length. The John Paul bow makers untwisted and restrung my bow. When I picked up my violin they had me test it. I noticed there was still a slight muffled sound on the G string in very high positions. Andy took it back and lowered my bridge, and brought it back for me to test again! He also helped me find the best strings for my instrument. He made sure I was completely satisfied before I left. I was charge so much less than I thought Id as well. They completely maximized my instrument. Its better than when I bought it! I am so grateful. They knew I was going buy a new one if needed, and still took the time to fix it! I have no doubt, their #1 concern is for people to be happy! Even if they did not sell me the instrument!

I had a fantastic experience at Prier & Sons this weekend. My Husband and I drove down from ID to SLC almost entirely so I could swing by and check out the shop.Initially, I had planned on trying out some bows to replace my student-grade Coda and inquiring about re-hairing and repairs. Much to my surprise (not to mention that of the gentleman who was helping me), I ended up leaving with an absolutely beautiful bow that I could not be happier with. It was the first one that was pulled out for me to try and made my instrument sing in a way I did not know was possible. (Bonus: I was able to try out a bow worth about $30k, which was an experience in and of itself). The only thing I wish that I had done beforehand was to call and speak with someone about what I was looking for and my price range. I didnt really bother to research what I was getting myself into before formulating a budget (and subsequently blowing it out of the water), which was my bad, but I left so very excited with my purchase that I cant really be upset. I will definitely be returning to Prier for all of my future needs and to drop off my instrument for a spa day sometime soon.

The shops ok and great service but pretty pricey almost spend $20.00 some dollars for an A string so if your not planning on spending a lot you might want to try somewhere else dont get me wrong its good but its personal preference.

Took my violin in last week after owning it for 24 years. I had been thinking about buying a new instrument as I had not been happy with the sound or performance for years. Without me saying a thing, Daniel took one and identified 3 specific issues I had been having trouble with for quite some time. Since he guessed right on the money, I took all his recommendations and when I got it back the sound and playability was up to par with instruments I had tried out costing many thousands of dollars more. Its simply amazing what I can do on my instrument now! He was fair and honest in his business practices and also allowed me to play on his finest instruments as long as I wanted. Friendly, professional, negotiable, family Prier has my business and that of my students for life.

Went in to ask about selling a violin I had. Person working there looked at it for a second, basically insulted us for what we paid for it and refused to give any more information. When we asked for a recommendation of another place to go, he said no one would want it. I dont think Ive ever met anyone so rude.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE!!! My family and I have been customers of Peter Prier & Sons for 20 years, until today. I will NEVER go back to Prier Violins, EVER and I will never recommend them to anyone ever again, either. Daniel Prier demonstrated the most blatant examples of arrogance, poor customer service, and self-righteousness I have ever seen. Such a shame. I am saddened that I was treated this way by the shop owner, nonetheless. I am more saddened by the fact that I can no longer even stomach the thought of walking through the doors of the shop, or looking into the old schools windows, which is something that I have always enjoyed since I was small. What an unfortunate way to treat people, especially from a long-standing local business. I am so disheartened.I had a phone call with Daniel Prier today (Saturday) in an attempt to discuss how my violins appraisal was completed. Let me be clear, I was NOT unhappy with the monetary value of my instrument, but the fact that my appraisal literally was WORD-FOR-WORD the same as my old one from 20 years ago when I had my instrument completely restored by Prier Violins (its a 1711 Strad-type model made around 1920). The market value did not change much, which I expected, and when I called to talk to someone about it and that I felt that $100 for an appraisal that was nearly identical to my old one was a bit steep, Daniel Prier proceeded to interrupt me repeatedly, yell at me on the phone and patronize me by saying he could re-do my appraisal with more adjectives if I wanted. When I repeatedly tried to explain my position and that I was NOT upset with the value it came back at, he continued to accuse me of not being happy with the current market value and that he put a lot of time and research into my appraisal and that he was a very busy man. He said I could bring it back on Monday for a refund of my money and then continued to yell at me that he has 20 years of luthier experience and that its not his fault the value isnt what I was expecting. I AGAIN explained the value wasnt what I was talking about and that I called so I could have a conversation with someone about my perception of the appraisal and talk with them about what went into it and see if we could come up with a resolution. He continued to speak aggressively and loudly and accused me of yelling at him for 15 minutes with customers in front of him. I said it had only actually been 7 minutes and that I wasnt yelling. I kept trying to de-escalate him, but he WOULD NOT let me speak even when I was trying to say that his shop did the original restoration and that my family and I have been to his shop many many times since then and that I have always been happy with their service and products, which is why I brought it back for the updated appraisal. I had to keep asking him to let me speak and he yelled When YOU have 20 years of luthier experience, then YOU can tell me how to run my shop!. I was STUNNED. I have NEVER been treated like this before. Finally, he screamed into the phone You know WHAT? Im taking that offer BACK. Your $100 is MINE and I dont need your business ANYWAY! Then he promptly hung up on me. Appalling.

I wish I would have read the reviews before contacting Dan Prier the owner. This was one of the worst experiences I have had. He was condescending, rude, not to mention completely unprofessional. Do yourself a favor and avoid this shop at all costs.
