When I was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, TX back in 2000, I would visit El Vasquero for my boots, hat, etc.. As I recall, the owners are a husband and wife Team.When I was getting boots, the husband worked with me for at least an hour to break them in. He rubbed the inside of the boot with a wet washcloth, had me but the boots back on and walk around the store for a bit, then checked the fit. Though I currently have boots that are much more expensive than that pair, I cant say that I have ever had a pair that fit as nicely.I ordered a duster from him. When it came in a few weeks later, he sent it back because the quality wasnt up to his standard. He ordered a more expensive one and didnt charge me the difference.Though I live in South Carolina now, I still recommend El Vasquero to anyone that will be in the area.

As local as you can get with quality and service! Our experience there was like visiting an old friend. Mike has been running his business for over 30 years. He works hard and gives honest products. We traveled to Texas to get an authentic cowboy hat, and got what we wanted here! Mike had a great selection for us to choose from. He adjusted the hat so it fit perfectly on my boyfriend and educated us on caring for the hat. My boyfriend loves his hat and wears it all the time...almost too much time for me to handle!Support local business owners like this one. We highly recommend him! Lovely little shop to visit while near the Alamo. Owner is extremely helpful, checked our feet for areas of concern, gave wonderful advice. My husband got insoles which have made a big difference so far. I bought beautiful, high quality boots which fit perfectly. The owner Mike, is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I went there looking to get a new pair of boots, and custom insoles. He listened to me, and examined my feet to ensure proper fit and comfort for my boots. Then he went above and beyond, he refused to just sell me any pair of boots he told me that he would ensure that they match my price range, and comfort above all else. Dont go to just any boot shop, spend a little more effort and seek out the master whom will bend over backwards to help.

I stopped by after reading the other reviews - and was not disappointed! Mike was knowledgeable and laid back. Got me in a pair of boots that fit perfectly! Wore them pretty much non-stop for the next 3 days without a hitch! Id definitely recommend Mike and his store. 😊

I am originally from Canada and now live in California. I wanted a real Texan cowboy hat that would fit both drastic weather. The owner Mike is a real old-school gentleman that guided me through the different styles and materials until I picked a beaver 5X black Rodeo King that looked awesome. He took the time to measure my head, steam the hat and morph it until it would look perfect for ME. Thats what impressed me the most, not only that I got a great hat but I ended up with a custom fit hat!Furthermore I told him about my Boulet boots (a French Canadian brand I was surprised he knew very well) that were hurting me. At no charge he measured my feet with his machines and gave me free advices on how to fix my boots. You can see that this man cares about his job, this is his life and he only aims to help people have a great hat and boot experience.The selection is a bit limited but if you are in town for a bit, he can order pretty much anything for you, custom it for you and ship it to your home.Next time Im in San Antonio Im going back to see my pal Mike so he can custom me some boots. You can trust this man, hes the original boots and hats tailor.

My husband and I were very impressed with the quality of the products and the service. Mike isn’t interested in selling you the most expensive boots; he is interested in selling you the best boots for your feet. The boots are high quality and if you don’t like the selection in the store, you can order with free shipping to your home.

Nothing but great things to say about Mike. Great customer skills and very competitive prices. Mike was able to custom fit our boots with the help of his computerized foot analyzer. Went to a couple of other places to compare but none treated us as good as El Vaquero!!

My friend and I went there to check out the boots. The owner analyzed our feet on a machine and told us what was good for our feet. That was kind of impressive. BUT, he had only ONE type of boot for each one of us. We didn’t like much the ones he showed us. Before we leave my friend asked his name just to thank him and say bye while he was talking to other costumer. His answer? “It is not of your interest”. Too bad.

Best boot buying experience. The owner, Michael, is a very accommodating and knowledgeable cobbler. Prepare to spend some time in his shop, as he will not let you leave with a boot that doesnt fit perfectly on your feet or your budget.

I ordered a pair of $300 boots in person at the shop and never received them upon returning home. Tried calling multiple times but couldnt communicate with owner, they said they would call back and never did. Calling it a loss at this point.

I bought boots today. My first, I am from Australia. The owner took the time to examine and measure my feet and recommend boots that fitted perfectly. He doesn’t have the biggest range but his service was excellent.

The owner works behind the counter and is super friendly and knowledgeable. Great hats, boots, belts and buckles, and other unique souvenirs. Tourists should definitely try to pop in.

El Vaquero didnt have exactly what we were looking for but we were shown exactly where to find it elsewhere. Amazing shop!

We found this place thru google maps and we were near the Alamo, some of the previous messages allowed us to feel comfortable in knowing that this wasnt just a shoe story. We walked in and the owner was there, you can tell very quickly that he is not about making a sale. He is about ensuring that you are happy with the boot you select, and he guides you thru the fitting process. Ensuring that comfort is first. Once comfort and fitting is made. He will ensure that your budget needs if any are respected and maintained. There is no up selling, there is no pressure. It was a great experience for my gf and she walked away with exactly what she wanted out of her first real boot.He was also able to help me with custom insoles which completely easy my knee and back problem. We came back the next day so that my gf could have some insoles made for her shoes.We can not recommend this place enough to anyone looking to make a purchase in any western gear, especially boots.
